Fractons, symmetric gauge fields and geometry

Gapless fracton phases are characterized by the conservation of certain charges and their higher moments. These charges generically couple to higher rank gauge fields. In this paper we study systems conserving charge and dipole moment, and construct the corresponding gauge fields propagating in arbitrary curved backgrounds. The relation between the symmetries of these class of systems and spacetime transformations is discussed. In fact, we argue that higher rank symmetric gauge theories are closer to gravitational fields than to a standard gauge theory.

Space-dependent symmetries and fractons

There has been a surge of interest in effective non-Lorentzian theories of excitations with restricted mobility, known as fractons. Examples include defects in elastic materials, vortex lattices or spin liquids. In the effective theory novel coordinate-dependent symmetries emerge that shape the properties of fractons. In this review we will discuss these symmetries, cover the effective description of gapless fractons via elastic duality, and discuss their hydrodynamics.

Super-resonant transport of topological surface states subjected to in-plane magnetic fields

Magnetic oscillations of Dirac surface states of topological insulators are expected to be associated with the formation of Landau levels or the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We instead study the conductance of Dirac surface states subjected to an in-plane magnetic field in presence of a barrier potential. Strikingly, we find that, in the case of large barrier potentials, the surface states exhibit pronounced oscillations in the conductance when varying the magnetic field, in the \textit{absence} of Landau levels or the Aharonov-Bohm effect. These novel magnetic oscillations are attributed to the emergence of \textit{super-resonant regimes} by tuning the magnetic field, in which almost all propagating electrons cross the barrier with perfect transmission. In the case of small and moderate barrier potentials, we also identify a positive magnetoconductance which is due to the increase of the Fermi surface by tilting the surface Dirac cone. Moreover, we show that for weak magnetic fields, the conductance displays a shifted sinusoidal dependence on the field direction with period $π$ and phase shift determined by the tilting direction with respect to the field direction. Our predictions can be applied to many topological insulators, such as HgTe and Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, and provide important insights into exploring and understanding exotic magnetotransport properties of topological surface states.

Quantum Hall effective action for anisotropic Dirac semi-metal

We present a study of Hall transport in semi-Dirac critical phases. The construction is based on a covariant formulation of relativistic systems with spatial anisotropy. Geometric data together with external electromagnetic fields is used to devise an expansion procedure that leads to a low-energy effective action consistent with the discrete $PT$ symmetry that we impose. We use the action to discuss terms contributing to the Hall transport and extract the coefficients. We also discuss the associated scaling symmetry.

Non-Abelian anomalies in multi-Weyl semimetals

We construct the effective field theory for time-reversal symmetry breaking multi-Weyl semimetals (mWSMs), composed of a single pair of Weyl nodes of (anti-)monopole charge $n$, with $n=1,2,3$ in crystalline environment. From both the continuum and lattice models, we show that a mWSM with $n>1$ can be constructed by placing $n$ flavors of linearly dispersing simple Weyl fermions (with $n=1$) in a bath of an $SU(2)$ non-Abelian static background gauge field. Such an $SU(2)$ field preserves certain crystalline symmetry (four-fold rotational or $C_4$ in our construction), but breaks the Lorentz symmetry, resulting in nonlinear band spectra (namely, $E \sim (p^2_x + p^2_y)^{n/2}$, but $E \sim |p_z|$, for example, where momenta ${\bf p}$ is measured from the Weyl nodes). Consequently, the effective field theory displays $U(1) \times SU(2)$ non-Abelian anomaly, yielding anomalous Hall effect, its non-Abelian generalization, and various chiral conductivities. The anomalous violation of conservation laws is determined by the monopole charge $n$ and a specific algebraic property of the $SU(2)$ Lie group, which we further substantiate by numerically computing the regular and "isospin" densities from the lattice models of mWSMs. These predictions are also supported from a strongly coupled (holographic) description of mWSMs. Altogether our findings unify the field theoretic descriptions of mWSMs of arbitrary monopole charge $n$ (featuring $n$ copies of the Fermi arc surface states), predict signatures of non-Abelian anomaly in table-top experiments, and pave the route to explore anomaly structures for multi-fold fermions, transforming under arbitrary half-integer or integer spin representations.

Hall Viscosity in a Strongly Coupled Magnetized Plasma

We show how a Hall viscosity induced by a magnetic field can be generated in strongly coupled theories with a holographic dual. This is achieved by considering parity-breaking higher derivative terms in the gravity dual. These terms couple the Riemann curvature tensor to the field strength of a gauge field dual to the charge current, and have an analog in the field theory side as a coupling between the "Euler current" and the electromagnetic field. As a concrete example, we study the effect of the new terms in the thermodynamic and transport properties of a strongly coupled magnetized plasma dual to a dyonic black hole in $AdS_4$. As a new property of the holographic model, we find that for a state that is initially neutral at zero magnetic field, a charge density and non-dissipative Hall transport are present when the magnetic field is turned on. Remarkably, we also observe that the results from the holographic model are consistent with hydrodynamics even at magnetic fields much larger than temperature.

Magnetotransport in multi-Weyl semimetals: A kinetic theory approach

We study the longitudinal magnetotransport in three-dimensional multi-Weyl semimetals, constituted by a pair of (anti)-monopole of arbitrary integer charge ($n$), with $n=1,2$ and $3$ in a crystalline environment. For any $n>1$, even though the distribution of the underlying Berry curvature is anisotropic, the corresponding intrinsic component of the longitudinal magnetoconductivity (LMC), bearing the signature of the chiral anomaly, is insensitive to the direction of the external magnetic field ($B$) and increases as $B^2$, at least when it is sufficiently weak (the semi-classical regime). In addition, the LMC scales as $n^3$ with the monopole charge. We demonstrate these outcomes for two distinct scenarios, namely when inter-particle collisions in the Weyl medium are effectively described by (a) a single and (b) two (corresponding to inter- and intra-valley) scattering times. While in the former situation the contribution to LMC from chiral anomaly is inseparable from the non-anomalous ones, these two contributions are characterized by different time scales in the later construction. Specifically for sufficiently large inter-valley scattering time the LMC is dominated by the anomalous contribution, arising from the chiral anomaly. The predicted scaling of LMC and the signature of chiral anomaly can be observed in recently proposed candidate materials, accommodating multi-Weyl semimetals in various solid state compounds.

Scaling of the Holographic AC conductivity for non-Fermi liquids at criticality

The frequency dependence of the AC conductivity is studied in a holographic model of a non-fermi liquid that is amenable to both analytical and numerical computation. In the regime that dissipation dominates the DC conductivity, the AC conductivity is described well in the IR by a Drude peak despite the absence of quasiparticles. In the regime where pair-production-like processes dominate the conductivity there is no Drude peak. A scaling tail is found for the AC conductivity that is independent of the charge density and momentum dissipation. Evidence is given that this scaling tail $σ_{AC}\sim ω^m$ appears generically in quantum critical holographic systems and the associated scaling exponent $m$ is calculated in terms of the Lifshitz and conduction critical exponents.
