Temperature-insensitive tunable and stable Fabry-Perot cavity for atomic physics

Optical Fabry-Perot cavities are crucial tools for metrology experiments, where they achieve extreme length stability, and for some atomic physics experiments, where tunability to atomic transitions enables atom-light interactions. However, achieving both frequency stability and tunability in a single cavity has remained a challenge, forcing metrology experiments exploiting atom-cavity interactions to rely on external active feedback systems to stabilize the length of the cavity. Here, we describe a piezoelectrically-tunable cavity with a cancellation of the coefficient of thermal expansion at around $5^\circ\mathrm{C}$, achieving fractional frequency instabilities at the $4\times 10^{-13}$ level for 1~s integration time. This advance eliminates the need for external stabilization in many atom-cavity experiments, making this design ideal for applications such as ultra-stable superradiant lasers and other cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments.

Absorption spectroscopy and Stokes polarimetry in a $^{87}$Rb vapour in the Voigt geometry with a 1.5 T external magnetic field

We present a detailed spectroscopic investigation of a thermal $^{87}$Rb atomic vapour in a magnetic field of 1.5~T in the Voigt geometry. We fit experimental spectra for all Stokes parameters with our theoretical model \textit{ElecSus} and find very good quantitative agreement, with RMS errors of $\sim 1.5$\% in all cases. We extract the magnetic field strength and the angle between the polarisation of the light and the magnetic field from the atomic signal, and we measure the birefringence effects of the cell windows on the optical rotation signals. This allows us to carry out precise measurements at a high field strength and arbitrary geometries, allowing further development of possible areas of application for atomic magnetometers.

Use of an electric-dipole forbidden transition to optically probe the Autler Townes effect

We study the Autler Townes (AT) effect derived from a strong electric dipole transition stimulated by a resonant laser beam and probing it by means of a weak electric quadrupole transition with a controlled frequency detuning in a ladder configuration. The experiment was carried out for a $^{87}$Rb atomic gas at room temperature in a velocity-selective scheme. The AT effect was monitored via the splitting of the fluorescence spectra associated with the spontaneous decay to the ground state. The theoretical description incorporates the modification of standard few-level schemes introduced by forbidden electric-dipole transitions selection rules. We develop an analytic ladder three-level scheme to approximate the cyclic $5\mathrm{S}_{1/2} \mathrm{F}=2\rightarrow 5\mathrm{P}_{3/2} F=3 \rightarrow 6\mathrm{P}_{3/2} \mathrm{F}=1,2,3\rightarrow 5 \mathrm{S}_{1/2}\mathrm{F}=2$ path. Other levels that could have effects on the fluorescence are included via a fourth level with effective parameters. Doppler effects and finite bandwidths of the laser beams are included in the theoretical model to closely reproduce the experimental results.
