Rheological properties of a granular impurity in the Couette flow

We discuss in this work the validity of the theoretical solution of the nonlinear Couette flow for a granular impurity obtained in a recent work [preprint arXiv:0802.0526], in the range of large inelasticity and shear rate. We show there is a good agreement between the theoretical solution and Monte Carlo simulation data, even under these extreme conditions. We also discuss an extended theoretical solution that would work for large inelasticities in ranges of shear rate $a$ not covered by our previous work (i.e., below the threshold value $a_{th}$ for which uniform shear flow may be obtained) and compare also with simulation data. Preliminary results in the simulations give useful insight in order to obtain an exact and general solution of the nonlinear Couette flow (both for $a\ge a_{th}$ and $a<a_{th}$).

Granular mixtures modeled as elastic hard spheres subject to a drag force

Granular gaseous mixtures under rapid flow conditions are usually modeled by a multicomponent system of smooth inelastic hard spheres with constant coefficients of normal restitution. In the low density regime an adequate framework is provided by the set of coupled inelastic Boltzmann equations. Due to the intricacy of the inelastic Boltzmann collision operator, in this paper we propose a simpler model of elastic hard spheres subject to the action of an effective drag force, which mimics the effect of dissipation present in the original granular gas. The Navier--Stokes transport coefficients for a binary mixture are obtained from the model by application of the Chapman--Enskog method. The three coefficients associated with the mass flux are the same as those obtained from the inelastic Boltzmann equation, while the remaining four transport coefficients show a general good agreement, especially in the case of the thermal conductivity. Finally, the approximate decomposition of the inelastic Boltzmann collision operator is exploited to construct a model kinetic equation for granular mixtures as a direct extension of a known kinetic model for elastic collisions.

Non-linear plane perturbation in a non-ohmic/ohmic fluid interface in a vertical electric field

The stability of a non-ohmic/ohmic fluid interface in the presence of a constant gravitational field and stressed by a vertical stationary electric field with unipolar injection is studied, focusing on the destabilizing action of the electric pressure when charge relaxation effects can be ignored. We use a hydraulic model, whose static equilibrium condition is written and analysed as a function of the ohmic fluid conductivity when subjected to a non-linear perturbation. The combined action of the polarization and free interfacial charges on the pressure instability mechanism is also analysed. The results show some important peculiarities of the fluid interface behaviour in the presence of a stationary space charge distribution generated by unipolar injection in the non-ohmic fluid.
