Bayesian analysis of $α$-Starobinsky model with Planck, ACT and DESI data

We present a joint Bayesian analysis to impose constraints on the generalized $α$-Starobinsky inflationary model using the high-precision cosmological datasets: Planck, CMB lensing from ACT DR6, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from DESI DR2. For the parameter inference, we introduce an alternative sampling approach. Rather than imposing priors on the cosmological parameters of the inflationary potential $(V_0, \, α, \, N_*)$, we place priors directly on the primordial physical observables $(A_s,\, n_s,\, r)$ through analytical slow-roll consistency relations. Our pipeline internally maps these sampled observables to the corresponding $α$-Starobinsky parameters. These values are then passed to a modified version of $\tt{CLASS}$, which solves the exact inflationary dynamics numerically. This pipeline ensures that the final reported posteriors for the observables are computed exactly, completely free from the slow-roll approximation. Applying this methodology, we explore the viability of the $α$-Starobinsky model. We show that, when the full combined dataset is considered, the pure Starobinsky model (i.e., the canonical limit $α= 1$) shows signs of breaking down, since it requires a large number of $e$-folds of inflation after horizon crossing ($N_* > 60$) due to the shift in the scalar spectral index, $n_s$. In contrast, allowing the deformation parameter $α$ as a free parameter yields a clear $1σ$ preference for $\log_{10} α> 0$, present across all datasets. Notably, we also show that the addition of ACT DR6 lensing data introduces no significant impact on these primordial constraints, confirming that our robust posteriors are primarily driven by Planck and DESI measurements.

Cosmological evolution of collisionless relativistic gases as dark matter

We study a phenomenological dark matter model described as a collisionless relativistic kinetic gas in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe. After normalization to the observed present-day dark matter abundance, the model is fully specified by a single dimensionless parameter $β$, interpreted as the present particle velocity in units of the speed of light. The resulting energy density, pressure, and sound speed admit closed analytic expressions, interpolating between a radiation-like regime at early times and cold dark matter at late times. We implement the model in a modified version of the Boltzmann code CLASS and confront it with Planck 2018 CMB data. We find that sufficiently small values of $β$ are observationally indistinguishable from $Λ$CDM, while larger values inducing relativistic effects at early times are constrained. These results establish the consistency of the relativistic kinetic gas scenario with current cosmological observations.

Bayesian Analysis of a Generalized Starobinsky Model with Reheating Constraints

We study a generalization of the the Starobinsky model adding a term of the form $R^{2p}$ to the Einstien-Hilbert action. We take the power $p$ as a parameter of the model and explore the constraints from CMB plus BAO data through a Bayesian analysis, thus exploring a range of values for the exponent parameter. We incorporate a reheating phase to the model through the background matter content (equation of state) and the duration of this period (number of $e$-foldings of reheating). We find that incorporating information from reheating imposes constraints on cosmological quantities, more stringent than the case of no reheating when tested with the Planck+BAO data. The inferred value of the exponent parameter is statistically consistent with $p=1$, favoring the original Starobinsky potential. Moreover, we report tighter constraints on $p$ and the number of $e$-folds in comparison with previous works. The obtained values for other inflationary observational parameters, such as the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the scalar amplitude of perturbations $A_s$, are consistent with prior measurements. Finally we present the alternative use of consistency relations in order to simplify the parameter space and test the generalized Starobinsky potential even more efficiently.

Gauge fixing in cosmological perturbations of Unimodular Gravity

With focus on the cosmological evolution of linear perturbations of matter and geometry, we calculate the equivalent expressions to that of the Newtonian and Synchronous gauges within the framework of Unimodular Gravity, being these two gauges commonly used and implemented in Boltzmann codes. An important aspect of our analysis is the inclusion of the energy-momentum current violation, as well as its perturbations. Moreover, for the first time we demonstrate that it is possible to fix both gauges consistently, although as it has been already noticed in previous literature, neither of them is recovered in the sense of the dynamics given in General Relativity for matter and metric fluctuations. Specifically, we show that since the unimodular constraint at the level of linear perturbations lead to only one degree of freedom of scalar modes of metric fluctuations, the dynamics in Unimodular Gravity forces to keep the anisotropic stress in the Newtonian gauge, whereas the cold dark matter comoving frame can not be set in the Synchronous gauge. The physical implications on the density contrast of cold dark matter is reviewed, and the Sachs-Wolfe effect is obtained and compared with previous results in the literature of cosmological perturbations in Unimodular Gravity.

On the cosmological evolution of Scalar Field Dark Matter in the $\texttt{CLASS}$ code: accuracy and precision of numerical solutions

We present a numerical analysis of the cosmological evolution of scalar field dark matter (SFDM) in the Boltzmann code $\texttt{CLASS}$, based on a dynamical system analysis of previous works. We show a detailed study of the evolution of the different dynamical variables, and in particular of the energy density and its corresponding linear perturbations. The numerical results are in good agreement with those of the original SFDM equations of motion, and have better accuracy than other approaches. In addition, we calculate the temperature and matter power spectra and discuss the reliability of their numerical results. We also give simple examples in which we can put constraints on the field mass using recent likelihoods incorporated in the Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler $\texttt{MontePython}$.

Bayesian analysis for a class of $α$-attractor inflationary models

We perform a Bayesian study of a generalization of the basic $α$-attractor T model given by the potential $V(ϕ)=V_0\left[1-\text{sech}^{p}\left(ϕ/\sqrt{6α}M_{pl}\right)\right]$ where $ϕ$ is the inflaton field and the parameter $α$ corresponds to the inverse curvature of the scalar manifold in the conformal or superconformal realizations of the attractor models. Such generalization is characterized by the power $p$ which includes the basic or base model for $p=2$. Once the priors for the parameters of the $α$-attractor potential are set by numerical exploration, we perform the corresponding statistical analysis for the cases $p=1\, , 2\, , 3\, ,4$, and derive posteriors. Considering the original $α$-attractor potential as the base model, we calculate the evidence for our generalization, and conclude that the $p=4$ model is preferred by the CMB data. We also present constraints for the parameter $α$. Interestingly, all the cases studied prefer a specific value for the tensor-to-scalar ratio given by $r\simeq 0.0025$.

Tracker phantom field and a cosmological constant: dynamics of a composite dark energy model

In this work, we study tracker phantom dark energy models with a general parameterization of the scalar potentials. Our analysis also considers the scenario of having both phantom field and the cosmological constant as the dark energy components. A detailed statistical analysis with current cosmological observations shows an increase in the value of the Hubble parameter due to the presence of phantom dark energy but it can not alleviate the Hubble tension completely. Our results using Bayesian methods suggests a decisive evidence in favor of a phantom field over a positive cosmological constant, although the possibility of a negative cosmological constant cannot be ruled out hidden in the dark sector.

Revisiting cosmological diffusion models in Unimodular Gravity and the $H_0$ tension

Within the framework of Unimodular Gravity, we consider non-gravitational interactions between dark matter and dark energy. Particularly, we describe such interactions in the dark sector by considering diffusion models that couple the cold dark matter fluid with the dark energy component, where the latter has the form of a variable cosmological "constant". For the first time, we solve the cosmological evolution of these models from the radiation dominated era to the present day. We show how the diffusion processes take place by analyzing the cosmological evolution of the energy density parameters $Ω_{cdm}$ and $Ω_Λ$, as well as that of the Hubble parameter. Finally, we perform the statistical analysis, imposing constraints on the diffusion parameters, by using data from Planck 2018, SH0ES, Pantheon, and H0LICOW collaborations. We found that cosmological diffusion models in the framework of Unimodular Gravity can ease the current tension in the value of $H_0$. We also show that the very far future cosmological evolution for all diffusion models is eternally accelerating without future singularities.

One-parametric description for scalar field dark matter potentials

We study the cosmological evolution for a scalar field dark matter model, by considering a parameterization of the evolution equations that allow us to unify in a single parameter a family of potentials: quadratic (free case), trigonometric (Axion-like case), and hyperbolic. After exploring the cosmological dynamics of this model, we perform a statistical analysis to study the viability of such model in comparison with the standard Cold Dark Matter model. We found that the free case is preferred over the other scalar field potentials, but in any case all of them are disfavored by the cosmological observations with respect to the standard model.

Ultralight DM bosons with an Axion-like potential: scale-dependent constraints revisited

A scalar field $ϕ$ endowed with a trigonometric potential has been proposed to play the role of Dark Matter. A deep study of the cosmological evolution of linear perturbations, and its comparison to the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) cases (scalar field with quadratic potential), reveals an enhancement in the amplitude of the mass power spectrum for large wave numbers due to the non-linearity of the axion-like potential. For the first time, we study the scale-dependence on physical quantities such as the growth factor $D_k$, the velocity growth factor $f_k$, and $f_k σ_8$. We found that for $z<10$, all these quantities recover the CDM evolution, whereas for high redshift there is a clear distinction between each model (FDM case, and axion-like potential) depending on the wavenumber $k$ and on the decay parameter of the axion-like potential as well. A semi-analytical Halo Mass Function is also revisited, finding a suppression of the number of low mass halos, as in the FDM case, but with a small increment in the amplitude of the variance and halo mass function due to the non-linearity of the axion-like potential. Finally, we present constraints on the axion mass and the axion decay parameter by using data of the Planck Collaboration 2018 and Lyman-$α$ forest.

On the quantum origin of inflation in the geometric inflation model

In this paper we investigate the cosmological dynamics of geometric inflation by means of the tools of the dynamical systems theory. We focus in the study of two explicit models where it is possible to sum the infinite series of higher curvature corrections that arises in the formalism. These would be very interesting possibilities since, if regard gravity as a quantum effective theory, a key feature is that higher powers of the curvature invariants are involved at higher loops. Hence, naively, consideration of the whole infinite tower of curvature invariants amounts to consideration of all of the higher order loops. The global dynamics of these toy models in the phase space is discussed and the quantum origin of primordial inflation is exposed.

Gravitational Decoupling in Cosmology

Whereas the nature of dark components in the Universe remains unknown, alternative models of gravity have been developed to offer a geometric explanation to the origin of such components. In this work we use the Minimal Geometric Deformation approach to study extensions of the theory of General Relativity in a cosmological context. This is possible since such approach allows the decoupling of gravitational sources, and the Einstein field equations can be analytically solved with the presence of a new gravitational sector once a known GR solution is considered. In particular, we implement such approach in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and Kantowski-Sachs universes. We demonstrate that the gravitational decoupling leads to modifications of well known cosmological solutions. For instance, we show that an effective spatial curvature in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, as well as several kind of matter components in the Kantowski-Sachs case, are obtained. Thus, we found that it is possible to obtain spatial curvature and new matter terms from geometry, which in cosmology they could be useful in addressing problems such as the spatial flatness of the Universe, dark matter and dark energy.

A simple supergravity model of inflation constrained with Planck 2018 data

We study a model of inflation based on $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity essentially depending on one effective parameter. Under a field transformation we show that this model turns out to be equivalent to a previously studied supergravity model known to be ruled out with the original choice of the parameter. Such parameter measures the slope of the potential at observable scales. Through a Bayesian parameter estimation, it is shown how this model is compatible with recent CMB temperature measurements by {\it Planck 2018} giving rise to a simple, viable, single field model of inflation. The tensor to scalar ratio constraint is found to be $r_{0.002}<0.065$ with negative running. We discuss how observables are invariant under the field transformation which leaves unaltered the slow-roll parameters. As a consequence the use of one presentation of the model or its field-transformed version is purely a matter of convenience.

Bayesian evidence for $α$-attractor dark energy models

Dark energy models with tracker properties have gained attention due to the large range of initial conditions leading to the current value of the dark energy density parameter. A well-motivated family of these models are the so-called $α$-attractors, which show the late time behavior of a cosmological constant. In the present paper we perform a model-selection analysis of a variety of $α$-attractor potentials in comparison with a non-flat $Λ$CDM model. Specifically, we compute the Bayes Factor for the L-Model, the Oscillatory Tracker Model, the Recliner Model, and the Starobinsky Model, while considering the non-flat $Λ$CDM as the base model. Each model is tested through a Bayesian analysis using observations relevant to the current accelerated expansion: we employ the latest SNe Ia data, combined with cosmic clocks, the latest BOSS release of BAO data, and the Planck Compressed 2018 data. The produced Markov Chains for each model are further compared through a Bayesian evidence analysis. From the latter we conclude that the Oscillatory Tracker Model is preferred by data (even if weakly) over the non-flat $Λ$CDM model. Our results also suggest at the L-model is the least favoured version of the $α$-attractor models considered.

Cosmological signatures of ultralight dark matter with an axionlike potential

Nonlinearities in a realistic axion field potential may play an important role in the cosmological dynamics. In this paper we use the Boltzmann code CLASS to solve the background and linear perturbations evolution of an axion field and contrast our results with those of CDM and the free axion case. We conclude that there is a slight delay in the onset of the axion field oscillations when nonlinearities in the axion potential are taken into account. Besides, we identify a tachyonic instability of linear modes resulting in the presence of a bump in the power spectrum at small scales. Some comments are in turn about the true source of the tachyonic instability, how the parameters of the axionlike potential can be constrained by Ly-$α$ observations, and the consequences in the stability of self-gravitating objects made of axions.
