Volumes of subset Minkowski sums and the Lyusternik region

We begin a systematic study of the region of possible values of the volumes of Minkowski subset sums of a collection of $M$ compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, which we call the Lyusternik region, and make some first steps towards describing it. Our main result is that a fractional generalization of the Brunn-Minkowski-Lyusternik inequality conjectured by Bobkov et al. (2011) holds in dimension 1. Even though Fradelizi et al. (2016) showed that it fails in general dimension, we show that a variant does hold in any dimension.

Volume properties of high-dimensional Orlicz balls

We prove asymptotic estimates for the volume of families of Orlicz balls in high dimensions. As an application, we describe a large family of Orlicz balls which verify a famous conjecture of Kannan, Lov{á}sz and Simonovits about spectral gaps. We also study the asymptotic independence of coordinates on uniform random vectors on Orlicz balls, as well as integrability properties of their linear functionals.

A Gaussian correlation inequality for plurisubharmonic functions

A positive correlation inequality is established for circular-invariant plurisubharmonic functions, with respect to complex Gaussian measures. The main ingredients of the proofs are the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup, and another natural semigroup associated to the Gaussian $\partial$-Laplacian.

Functional inequalities for two-level concentration

Probability measures satisfying a Poincar{é} inequality are known to enjoy a dimension free concentration inequality with exponential rate. A celebrated result of Bobkov and Ledoux shows that a Poincar{é} inequality automatically implies a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality. As a consequence the Poincar{é} inequality ensures a stronger dimension free concentration property , known as two-level concentration. We show that a similar phenomenon occurs for the Latala-Oleszkiewicz inequalities, which were devised to uncover dimension free concentration with rate between exponential and Gaussian. Motivated by the search for counterexamples to related questions, we also develop analytic techniques to study functional inequalities for probability measures on the line with wild potentials.

Spectral gaps, symmetries and log-concave perturbations

We discuss situations where perturbing a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ does not deteriorate its Poincaré constant by much. A particular example is the symmetric exponential measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$, even log-concave perturbations of which have Poincaré constants that grow at most logarithmically with the dimension. This leads to estimates for the Poincaré constants of $(n/2)$-dimensional sections of the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$ for $1 \leq p \leq 2$, which are optimal up to logarithmic factors. We also consider symmetry properties of the eigenspace of the Laplace-type operator associated with a log-concave measure. Under symmetry assumptions we show that the dimension of this space is exactly $n$, and we exhibit a certain interlacing between the "odd" and "even" parts of the spectrum.

Positive Gaussian kernels also have Gaussian minimizers

We study lower bounds on multilinear operators with Gaussian kernels acting on Lebesgue spaces, with exponents below one. We put forward natural conditions when the optimal constant can be computed by inspecting centered Gaussian functions only, and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for this constant to be positive. Our work provides a counterpart to Lieb's results on maximizers of multilinear operators with real Gaussian kernels, also known as the multidimensional Brascamp-Lieb inequality. It unifies and extends several inverse inequalities.

Poincaré inequalities on intervals -- application to sensitivity analysis

The development of global sensitivity analysis of numerical model outputs has recently raised new issues on 1-dimensional Poincaré inequalities. Typically two kind of sensitivity indices are linked by a Poincaré type inequality, which provide upper bounds of the most interpretable index by using the other one, cheaper to compute. This allows performing a low-cost screening of unessential variables. The efficiency of this screening then highly depends on the accuracy of the upper bounds in Poincaré inequalities. The novelty in the questions concern the wide range of probability distributions involved, which are often truncated on intervals. After providing an overview of the existing knowledge and techniques, we add some theory about Poincaré constants on intervals, with improvements for symmetric intervals. Then we exploit the spectral interpretation for computing exact value of Poincaré constants of any admissible distribution on a given interval. We give semi-analytical results for some frequent distributions (truncated exponential, triangular, truncated normal), and present a numerical method in the general case. Finally, an application is made to a hydrological problem, showing the benefits of the new results in Poincaré inequalities to sensitivity analysis.

Perimeters, uniform enlargement and high dimensions

We study the isoperimetric problem in product spaces equipped with the uniform distance. Our main result is a characterization of isoperimetric inequalities which, when satisfied on a space, are still valid for the product spaces, up a to a constant which does not depend on the number of factors. Such dimension free bounds have applications to the study of influences of variables.

Transference Principles for Log-Sobolev and Spectral-Gap with Applications to Conservative Spin Systems

We obtain new principles for transferring log-Sobolev and Spectral-Gap inequalities from a source metric-measure space to a target one, when the curvature of the target space is bounded from below. As our main application, we obtain explicit estimates for the log-Sobolev and Spectral-Gap constants of various conservative spin system models, consisting of non-interacting and weakly-interacting particles, constrained to conserve the mean-spin. When the self-interaction is a perturbation of a strongly convex potential, this partially recovers and partially extends previous results of Caputo, Chafa\"ı, Grunewald, Landim, Lu, Menz, Otto, Panizo, Villani, Westdickenberg and Yau. When the self-interaction is only assumed to be (non-strongly) convex, as in the case of the two-sided exponential measure, we obtain sharp estimates on the system's spectral-gap as a function of the mean-spin, independently of the size of the system.

Combinatorial optimization over two random point sets

We analyze combinatorial optimization problems over a pair of random point sets of equal cardinal. Typical examples include the matching of minimal length, the traveling salesperson tour constrained to alternate between points of each set, or the connected bipartite r-regular graph of minimal length. As the cardinal of the sets goes to infinity, we investigate the convergence of such bipartite functionals.

Isoperimetry and Stability of Hyperplanes for Product Probability Measures

We investigate stationarity and stability of half-spaces as isoperimetric sets for product probability measures, considering the cases of coordinate and non-coordinate half-spaces. Moreover, we present several examples to which our results can be applied, with a particular emphasis on the logistic measure.

Generalized Dirichlet distributions on the ball and moments

The geometry of unit $N$-dimensional $\ell_{p}$ balls has been intensively investigated in the past decades. A particular topic of interest has been the study of the asymptotics of their projections. Apart from their intrinsic interest, such questions have applications in several probabilistic and geometric contexts (Barthe et al. 2005). In this paper, our aim is to revisit some known results of this flavour with a new point of view. Roughly speaking, we will endow the ball with some kind of Dirichlet distribution that generalizes the uniform one and will follow the method developed in Skibinsky (1967), Chang et al. (1993) in the context of the randomized moment space. The main idea is to build a suitable coordinate change involving independent random variables. Moreover, we will shed light on a nice connection between the randomized balls and the randomized moment space.

On Gaussian Brunn-Minkowski inequalities

In this paper, we are interested in Gaussian versions of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality. We prove in a streamlined way a semigroup version of the Ehrard inequality for $m$ Borel or convex sets based on a previous work by Borell. Our method also allows us to have semigroup proofs of the geometric Brascamp-Lieb inequality and of the reverse one which follow exactly the same lines.

Mass transport and variants of the logarithmic Sobolev inequality

We develop the optimal transportation approach to modified log-Sobolev inequalities and to isoperimetric inequalities. Various sufficient conditions for such inequalities are given. Some of them are new even in the classical log-Sobolev case. The idea behind many of these conditions is that measures with a non-convex potential may enjoy such functional inequalities provided they have a strong integrability property that balances the lack of convexity. In addition, several known criteria are recovered in a simple unified way by transportation methods and generalized to the Riemannian setting.

Isoperimetry between exponential and Gaussian

We study in details the isoperimetric profile of product probability measures with tails between the exponential and the Gaussian regime. In particular we exhibit many examples where coordinate half-spaces are approximate solutions of the isoperimetric problem.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities on R

We provide a sufficient condition for a measure on the real line to satisfy a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, thus extending the criterion of Bobkov and Götze. Under mild assumptions the condition is also necessary. Concentration inequalities are derived. This completes the picture given in recent contributions by Gentil, Guillin and Miclo.
