Appraisal Dimensions Generalise Better than Emotion Labels for Cross-Age Affect Recognition in AI-Assisted Healthcare

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare has advanced significantly, yet affect recognition remains a major challenge, particularly in AI-assisted interventions such as Computerized Cognitive Training (CCT). The THERADIA-WoZ corpus was developed to enable multimodal affect recognition in the context of AI-driven CCT, focusing on an older adult population. This study extends the corpus by introducing a dataset collected from young adults, allowing direct comparison of affect recognition models across age groups. Our objective was to assess whether multimodal models based on dimensions borrowed from appraisal theories outperform those based on categorical labels and to evaluate their generalisation power across age corpora. After comparing both corpora, models were trained and tested using within-corpus, cross-corpus, and mixed-corpus evaluation. Results revealed that appraisal dimensions consistently outperformed categorical labels across all conditions, demonstrating greater predictive accuracy and stability. Notably, categorical labels failed to generalise across age corpora, as performance dropped to chance levels in cross-corpus evaluation. In contrast, appraisal dimensions maintained predictive performance above chance, reinforcing their robustness for cross-age affect recognition. Furthermore, training on both corpora did not improve generalisation beyond within-corpus training. The findings support the theoretical and practical advantages of appraisal dimensions over categorical labels in affective computing. They also highlight the importance of multimodal fusion and deep learning representations for emotion modeling. To facilitate future research, we provide an API for researchers interested in time-continuous emotion prediction, offering valuable tools for behavioral sciences to enhance the measurement of emotional states in various experimental settings.

THERADIA WoZ: An Ecological Corpus for Appraisal-based Affect Research in Healthcare

We present THERADIA WoZ, an ecological corpus designed for audiovisual research on affect in healthcare. Two groups of senior individuals, consisting of 52 healthy participants and 9 individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), performed Computerised Cognitive Training (CCT) exercises while receiving support from a virtual assistant, tele-operated by a human in the role of a Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ). The audiovisual expressions produced by the participants were fully transcribed, and partially annotated based on dimensions derived from recent models of the appraisal theories, including novelty, intrinsic pleasantness, goal conduciveness, and coping. Additionally, the annotations included 23 affective labels drew from the literature of achievement affects. We present the protocols used for the data collection, transcription, and annotation, along with a detailed analysis of the annotated dimensions and labels. Baseline methods and results for their automatic prediction are also presented. The corpus aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers in affective computing, and is made available to both industry and academia.

Evaluating Learning Games during their Conception

Learning Games (LGs) are educational environments based on a playful approach to learning. Their use has proven to be promising in many domains, but is at present restricted by the time consuming and costly nature of the developing process. In this paper, we propose a set of quality indicators that can help the conception team to evaluate the quality of their LG during the designing process, and before it is developed. By doing so, the designers can identify and repair problems in the early phases of the conception and therefore reduce the alteration phases, that occur after testing the LG's prototype. These quality indicators have been validated by 6 LG experts that used them to assess the quality of 24 LGs in the process of being designed. They have also proven to be useful as design guidelines for novice LG designers.

Towards Industrialized Conception and Production of Serious Games

Serious Games (SGs) have experienced a tremendous outburst these last years. Video game companies have been producing fun, user-friendly SGs, but their educational value has yet to be proven. Meanwhile, cognition research scientist have been developing SGs in such a way as to guarantee an educational gain, but the fun and attractive characteristics featured often would not meet the public's expectations. The ideal SG must combine these two aspects while still being economically viable. In this article, we propose a production chain model to efficiently conceive and produce SGs that are certified for their educational gain and fun qualities. Each step of this chain will be described along with the human actors, the tools and the documents that intervene.

Démarche d'évaluation de l'usage et des répercussions psychosociales d'un environnement STIC sur une population de personnes âgées en résidence médicalisée

The MNESIS Project aims to see whether the use of computerized environment by elderly people in medicalized residences stimulates their cognitive capacities and contributes to a better integration, recognition or acceptance within their social environment (friends, family, medical staff). In this paper we present the protocol of evaluation that is defined to check this assumption. This protocol is between users' centred traditional protocols (built on investigations and indirect observation) and studies of Web Usage Mining (where knowledge databases about the uses are built from traces of use). It allows collecting direct and indirect information on a large scale and over long periods.

Fracture numérique chez les seniors du 4eme age. Observation d'une acculturation technique

Very old people accumulate the "handicaps": social, physical, psychological or cognitive. Various research thus developed to determine there waiting and needs and also to see the benefit possibly produced by technologies (called ?gerontechnology?) on their living conditions. The object of this article is to present the numerical service offer to very old perople and to see how it takes part in a social justice according to the definition of Rawls (principle of equal freedom, principle of equal opportunity in the access). The adoption, the use and the benefit of technology are analyzed in a theoretical way through a state of the art and in an experimental way through a qualitative and quantitative investigation carried out with a population of very old people. We propose to identify dynamic technological acceptance of old people according to the TAM'S (Technology Acceptance Model) of Davis adapted by (Hamner and Qazi, 2008).
