A Graph Theory Approach for Regional Controllability of Boolean Cellular Automata

Controllability is one of the central concepts of modern control theory that allows a good understanding of a system's behaviour. It consists in constraining a system to reach the desired state from an initial state within a given time interval. When the desired objective affects only a sub-region of the domain, the control is said to be regional. The purpose of this paper is to study a particular case of regional control using cellular automata models since they are spatially extended systems where spatial properties can be easily defined thanks to their intrinsic locality. We investigate the case of boundary controls on the target region using an original approach based on graph theory. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given based on the Hamiltonian Circuit and strongly connected component. The controls are obtained using a preimage approach.

Humans make best use of social heuristics when confronting hard problems in large groups

We report the results of a game-theoretic experiment with human players who solve the problems of increasing complexity by cooperating in groups of increasing size. Our experimental environment is set up to make it complicated for players to use rational calculation for making the cooperative decisions. This environment is directly translated into a computer simulation, from which we extract the collaboration strategy that leads to the maximal attainable score. Based on this, we measure the error that players make when estimating the benefits of collaboration, and find that humans massively underestimate these benefits when facing easy problems or working alone or in small groups. In contrast, when confronting hard problems or collaborating in large groups, humans accurately judge the best level of collaboration and easily achieve the maximal score. Our findings are independent on groups' composition and players' personal traits. We interpret them as varying degrees of usefulness of social heuristics, which seems to depend on the size of the involved group and the complexity of the situation.

A Self-Organized Method for Computing the Epidemic Threshold in Computer Networks

In many cases, tainted information in a computer network can spread in a way similar to an epidemics in the human world. On the other had, information processing paths are often redundant, so a single infection occurrence can be easily "reabsorbed". Randomly checking the information with a central server is equivalent to lowering the infection probability but with a certain cost (for instance processing time), so it is important to quickly evaluate the epidemic threshold for each node. We present a method for getting such information without resorting to repeated simulations. As for human epidemics, the local information about the infection level (risk perception) can be an important factor, and we show that our method can be applied to this case, too. Finally, when the process to be monitored is more complex and includes "disruptive interference", one has to use actual simulations, which however can be carried out "in parallel" for many possible infection probabilities.

Regional Control of Probabilistic Cellular Automata

Probabilistic Cellular Automata are extended stochastic systems, widely used for modelling phenomena in many disciplines. The possibility of controlling their behaviour is therefore an important topic. We shall present here an approach to the problem of controlling such systems by acting only on the boundary of a target region.

Spectral control for ecological stability

A system made up of N interacting species is considered. Self-reaction terms are assumed of the logistic type. Pairwise interactions take place among species according to different modalities, thus yielding a complex asymmetric disordered graph. A mathematical procedure is introduced and tested to stabilise the ecosystem via an {\it ad hoc} rewiring of the underlying couplings. The method implements minimal modifications to the spectrum of the Jacobian matrix which sets the stability of the fixed point and traces these changes back to species-species interactions. Resilience of the equilibrium state appear to be favoured by predator-prey interactions.

Toward a Boundary Regional Control Problem for Boolean Cellular Automata

An important question to be addressed regarding system control on a time interval $[0, T]$ is whether some particular target state in the configuration space is reachable from a given initial state. When the target of interest refers only to a portion of the spatial domain, we speak about regional analysis. Cellular Automata (CA) approach have been recently promoted for the study of control problems on spatially extended systems for which the classical approaches cannot be used. An interesting problem concerns the situation where the subregion of interest is not interior to the domain but a portion of its boundary. In this paper we address the problem of regional controllability of cellular automata via boundary actions, i.e., we investigate the characteristics of a cellular automaton so that it can be controlled inside a given region only acting on the value of sites at its boundaries.

The Peace Mediator effect: Heterogeneous agents can foster consensus in continuous opinion models

Statistical mechanics has proven to be able to capture the fundamental rules underlying phenomena of social aggregation and opinion dynamics, well studied in disciplines like sociology and psychology. This approach is based on the underlying paradigm that the interesting dynamics of multi-agent systems emerge from the correct definition of few parameters governing the evolution of each individual. Into this context, we propose a particular model of opinion dynamics based on the psychological construct named "cognitive dissonance". Our system is made of interacting individuals, the agents, each bearing only two dynamical variables (respectively "opinion" and "affinity") self-consistently adjusted during time evolution. We also define two special classes of interacting entities, both acting for a peace mediation process but via different course of action: "diplomats" and "auctoritates". The behavior of the system with and without peace mediators (PMs) is investigated and discussed with reference to corresponding psychological and social implications.

Control of multidimensional systems on complex network

Multidimensional systems coupled via complex networks are widespread in nature and thus frequently invoked for a large plethora of interesting applications. From ecology to physics, individual entities in mutual interactions are grouped in families, homogeneous in kind. These latter interact selectively, through a sequence of self-consistently regulated steps, whose deeply rooted architecture is stored in the assigned matrix of connections. The asymptotic equilibrium eventually attained by the system, and its associated stability, can be assessed by employing standard nonlinear dynamics tools. For many practical applications, it is however important to externally drive the system towards a desired equilibrium, which is resilient, hence stable, to external perturbations. To this end we here consider a system made up of $N$ interacting populations which evolve according to general rate equations, bearing attributes of universality. One species is added to the pool of interacting families and used as a dynamical controller to induce novel stable equilibria. Use can be made of the root locus method to shape the needed control, in terms of intrinsic reactivity and adopted protocol of injection. The proposed method is tested on both synthetic and real data, thus enabling to demonstrate its robustness and versatility.

Stochastic Agent-Based Models of Intimate Partner Violence

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health problem and social issue that involves couples from all socioeconomic and cultural contexts. IPV may affect women and men, but these latter are the most common perpetrators of IPV. We developed stochastic Agent-Based models of IPV focused on the couple dynamics, determined by the parallel, individual behaviour of partners. Based on the psychological theory of the Cycle of Violence, we have developed a model based on four discrete states: passivity, normal situation, upset and physical assault. The individual transition probability depends on the previous state of the subject and that of the partner, and on a control parameter, the aggressiveness. We then let this parameter evolve depending on the perceived violence from past experiences (polarisation) or from the support received from the environment (social influence). From the analysis of the phase diagrams we observe the emergence of characteristic patterns, in agreement with the observations of IPV in the literature.

A rain induced landslide 3D model based on molecular dynamics with fractal and fractional water diffusion

We present a three-dimensional model, based on cohesive spherical particles, of rain-induced landslides. The rainwater infiltration into the soil follow the either the fractional or the fractal diffusion equations. We solve analytically the fractal diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) with particular boundary conditions to simulate a rainfall event. Then, for the PDE, we developed a numerical integration scheme that we integrate with MD (Molecular Dynamics) algorithm for the triggering and propagation of the simulated landslide. Therefore we test the numerical integration scheme of fractal diffusion equation with the analytical solution. We adopt the fractal diffusion equation in term of gravimetric water content that we use as input of triggering scheme based on Mohr-Coulomb limit-equilibrium criterion, adapted to particle level. Moreover, taking into account an interacting force Lennard-Jones inspired, we use a standard MD algorithm to update particle positions and velocities. Then we present results for homogeneous and heterogeneous systems (i.e. composed by particles with same or different radius respectively). Interestingly, in the heterogeneous case, we observe segregation effects due to the different volume of the particles. Finally we show the parameter sensibility analysis both for triggering and propagation phase. Our simulations confirm the results of our previous two-dimensional model and therefore the feasible applicability to real cases.

Thermodynamics, entropy and waterwheels

In this paper the analogy between a thermal engine and a waterwheel is developed in details, showing that the analogous of the flow of water in an hydraulic engine is the flow of entropy in a thermal one. This analogy mat serve to analyse in details the aspects of a thermal engine that are quite distant from pupils' intuition. The discussion is complemented by an illustration of the working of thermal and hydraulic engines at the microscopic level, thus furnishing a view of what heat and work are at this level, and introducing the statistical and information aspects of entropy. Both hydraulic and thermal non-ideal engines are also discussed.

Stochastic Bifurcations in the Nonlinear Parallel Ising Model

We investigate the phase transitions of a nonlinear, parallel version of the Ising model, characterized by an antiferromagnetic linear coupling and ferromagnetic nonlinear one. This model arises in problems of opinion formation. The mean-field approximation shows chaotic oscillations, by changing the couplings or the connectivity. The spatial model shows bifurcations in the average magnetization, similar to what seen in the mean-field approximation, induced by the change of the topology, after rewiring short-range to long-range connection, as predicted by the small-world effect. These coherent periodic and chaotic oscillations of the magnetization reflect a certain degree of synchronization of the spins, induced by long-range couplings. Similar bifurcations may be induced in the randomly connected model by changing the couplings or the connectivity and also the dilution (degree of asynchronism) of the updating. We also examined the effects of inhomogeneity, mixing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling, which induces an unexpected bifurcation diagram with a "bubbling" behaviour, as also happens for dilution.

Collective Intelligence Heuristic: An Experimental Evidence

The main intreest of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of collective intelligence in an anonymous virtual environment developed for this purpose. In particular, we were interested in studiyng how dividing a fixed community in different group size, which, in different phases of the experiment, works to solve tasks of different complexity, influences the social problem solving process. The experiments, which have involved 216 university students, showed that the cooperative behaviour is stronger in small groups facing complex tasks: the cooperation probability negatively correlated with both the group size and easiness of task. Individuals seem to activate a collective intelligence heuristics when the problem is too complex. Some psychosocial variables were considered in order to check how they affect the cooperative behaviour of participants, but they do not seem to have a significant impact on individual cooperation probability, supporting the idea that a partial de-individualization operates in virtual environments.

Non-trivial reputation effects on social decision making in virtual environment

Reputation systems are currently used, often with success, to ensure the functioning of online services as well as of e-commerce sites. Despite the relationship between reputation and material cooperative behaviours is quite supported, less obvious appears the relationship with informative behaviours, which are crucial for the transmission of reputational information and therefore for the maintenance of cooperation among individuals. The purpose of this study was to verify how reputation affects cooperation dynamics in virtual environment, within a social dilemma situation (i.e., where there are incentives to act selfishly). The results confirm that reputation can activate prosocial conducts, however it highlights also the limitations and distortions that reputation can create.

Conformity in virtual environments: a hybrid neurophysiological and psychosocial approach

The main aim of our study was to analyse the effects of a virtual environment on social conformity, with particular attention to the effects of different types of task and psychological variables on social influence, on one side, and to the neural correlates related to conformity, measured by means of an Emotiv EPOC device on the other. For our purpose, we replicated the famous Asch's visual task and created two new tasks of increasing ambiguity, assessed through the calculation of the item's entropy. We also administered five scales in order to assess different psychological traits. From the experiment, conducted on 181 university students, emerged that conformity grows according to the ambiguity of the task, but normative influence is significantly weaker in virtual environments, if compared to face-to-face experiments. The analysed psycho-logical traits, however, result not to be relatable to conformity, and they only affect the subjects' response times. From the ERP (Event-related potentials) analysis, we detected N200 and P300 components comparing the plots of conformist and non-conformist subjects, alongside with the detection of their Late Positive Potential, Readiness Potential, and Error-Related Negativity, which appear consistently different for the two typologies.

Results of a Collective Awareness Platforms Investigation

In this paper we provide two introductory analyses of CAPs, based exclusively on the analysis of documents found on the Internet. The first analysis allowed us to investigate the world of CAPs, in particular for what concerned their status (dead or alive), the scope of those platforms and the typology of users. In order to develop a more accurate model of CAPs, and to understand more deeply the motivation of the users and the type of expected payoff, we analysed those CAPs from the above list that are still alive and we used two models developed for what concerned the virtual community and the collective intelligence.

Global topological control for synchronized dynamics on networks

A general scheme is proposed and tested to control the symmetry breaking instability of a homogeneous solution of a spatially extended multispecies model, defined on a network. The inherent discreteness of the space makes it possible to act on the topology of the inter-nodes contacts to achieve the desired degree of stabilization, without altering the dynamical parameters of the model. Both symmetric and asymmetric couplings are considered. In this latter setting the web of contacts is assumed to be balanced, for the homogeneous equilibrium to exist. The performance of the proposed method are assessed, assuming the Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation as a reference model. In this case, the implemented control allows one to stabilize the synchronous limit cycle, hence time-dependent, uniform solution. A system of coupled real Ginzburg-Landau equations is also investigated to obtain the topological stabilization of a homogeneous and constant fixed point.
