The Kowalewski's top revisited

The paper is a commentary of one section of the celebrated paper by Sophie Kowalewski on the motion of a rigid body with a fixed point. Its purpose is to show that the results of Kowalewski may be recovered by using the separability conditions obtained by Tullio Levi Civita in 1904.

Haantjes manifolds with symmetry

This paper has two purposes. The first is to introduce the definition of Haantjes manifolds with symmetry. The second is to explain why these manifolds appear in the theory of integrable systems of hydrodynamic type and in topological field theories.

The Clebsch System

The Clebsch system is one of the few classical examples of rigid bodies whose equations of motion are known to be integrable in the sense of Liouville. The explicit solution of its equations of motion, however, is particularly hard, and it has defeated many attempts in the past. In this paper we present a novel and rather detailed study of these equations of motion. Our approach is based on an improved version of the method originally used, in 1889, by Sophia Kowalewski to solve the equations of motion of the top bearing her name. We improve her method in two important points, and we clarify that it concerns a class of dynamical systems which is wider than the class of Hamiltonian systems which are integrable in the sense of Liouville. We use the improved version of the method by Kowalewski to prove two results. First, without using the Hamiltonian structure of the Clebsch system, we show that the integration of the equations of motion may be achieved by computing four Abelian integrals. Next, taking into account its Hamiltonian structure, we show that two quadratures are sufficient to compute a complete integral of its Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In this way, the process of solution of the equations of motion of the Clebsch system is clarified both from the standpoint of Abel and from the standpoint of Jacobi.

WDVV Equations

The paper aims to point out a novel geometric characterisation of the WDVV equations of 2D topological field theory.

Recursion Operators and Frobenius Manifolds

In this note I exhibit a "discrete homotopy" which joins the category of F-manifolds to the category of Poisson-Nijenhuis manifolds, passing through the category of Frobenius manifolds.

A Gentle (without Chopping) Approach to the Full Kostant-Toda Lattice

In this paper we propose a new algorithm for obtaining the rational integrals of the full Kostant-Toda lattice. This new approach is based on a reduction of a bi-Hamiltonian system on gl(n,R). This system was obtained by reducing the space of maps from Z_n to GL(n,R) endowed with a structure of a pair of Lie-algebroids.

On deformation of Poisson manifolds of hydrodynamic type

We study a class of deformations of infinite-dimensional Poisson manifolds of hydrodynamic type which are of interest in the theory of Frobenius manifolds. We prove two results. First, we show that the second cohomology group of these manifolds, in the Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology, is ``essentially'' trivial. Then, we prove a conjecture of B. Dubrovin about the triviality of homogeneous formal deformations of the above manifolds.

A Bi-Hamiltonian Theory for Stationary KdV Flows and their Separability

We present a fairly new and comprehensive approach to the study of stationary flows of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. They are obtained by means of a double restriction process from a dynamical system in an infinite number of variables. This process naturally provides us with a Lax representation of the flows, which is used to find their bi-Hamiltonian formulation. Then we prove the separability of these flows making use of their bi-Hamiltonian structure, and we show that the variables of separation are supplied by the Poisson pair.

Bihamiltonian Geometry, Darboux Coverings, and Linearization of the KP Hierarchy

We use ideas of the geometry of bihamiltonian manifolds, developed by Gel'fand and Zakharevich, to study the KP equations. In this approach they have the form of local conservation laws, and can be traded for a system of ordinary differential equations of Riccati type, which we call the Central System. We show that the latter can be linearized by means of a Darboux covering, and we use this procedure as an alternative technique to construct rational solutions of the KP equations.

Bihamiltonian Reductions and W_n Algebras

We discuss the geometry of the Marsden-Ratiu reduction theorem for a bihamiltonian manifold. We consider the case of the manifolds associated with the Gel'fand-Dickey theory, i.e., loop algebras over sl(n+1). We provide an explicit identification, tailored on the MR reduction, of the Adler-Gel'fand-Dickey brackets with the Poisson brackets on the MR-reduced bihamiltonian manifold N. Such an identification relies on a suitable immersion of the space of sections of the cotangent bundle of N into the algebra of pseudo differential operators connected to geometrical features of the theory of (classical) W_n algebras.

A Note on Fractional KdV Hierarchies

We introduce a hierarchy of mutually commuting dynamical systems on a finite number of Laurent series. This hierarchy can be seen as a prolongation of the KP hierarchy, or a ``reduction'' in which the space coordinate is identified with an arbitrarily chosen time of a bigger dynamical system. Fractional KdV hierarchies are gotten by means of further reductions, obtained by constraining the Laurent series. The case of sl(3)^2 and its bihamiltonian structure are discussed in detail.

Darboux Coverings and Rational Reductions of the KP Hierarchy

We use the method of Darboux coverings to discuss the invariant submanifolds of the KP equations, presented as conservation laws in the space of monic Laurent series in the spectral parameter (the space of the Hamiltonian densities). We identify a special class of these submanifolds with the rational invariant submanifolds entering matrix models of $2D$--gravity, recently characterized by Dickey and Krichever. Four examples of the general procedure are provided.
