Experimental Investigation of 5G Base Station functionalities in Reverberation Chamber at Millimeter-Wave

The performance and functionalities of a commercial fifth generation base station are evaluated inside the reverberation chamber at the mmWave frequency range. The base station capability to operates in different propagation environment conditions reproduced by the reverberation chamber is investigated. Throughput, modulation code scheme and beamforming are analyzed for different real life scenarios both in uplink and downlink. Experimental results inform network operators in their evaluation of the base station operation: i) in many scenarios within a laboratory; ii) in the assessment of whether expected benefit justifies the additional costs in an operating actual network.

FDTD Full Wave Simulations of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

This paper presents the analysis of metasurfaces, here called reconfigurable intelligent surface. The analysis is performed by numerical simulations that implement the finite-difference time-domain method. The metasurface has been modeled by metallic patches interconnected by varactor diodes. The electromagnetic source consists of randomly generated plane wave. This kind of analysis allows us to investigate the response of the metasurface when it is hit by a random source.

Near Field Optimization Algorithm for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a type of wireless communication technology that uses a reconfigurable surface, such as a wall or building that is able to adjust its properties by an integrated optimization algorithm in order to optimize the signal propagation for a given communication scenario. As a reconfiguration algorithm the multidimensional optimization of the GNU scientific library was analyzed to evaluate the performance of the smart surface in the quality of signal reception. This analysis took place by means of electrodynamic simulations based on the finite difference time domain method. Through these simulations it was possible to observe the efficiency of the algorithm in the reconfiguration of the RIS, managing to focus the electromagnetic waves in a remarkable way towards the point of interest.

Test of 5G System in the Reverberation Chamber at mm-wave

The performance of a real fifth generation base station was studied by using a reverberation chamber as a real life propagating environment. Preliminary tests were conducted in order to define 5G base station operation conditions at mm-wave and emulated scenarios where reconfigurable intelligent surface(s) (RISs) will successively be tested. Measurements campaign was carried out under the H2020 European project RISE-6G and a collaboration program between TIM S.p.A., Nokia and Universita` Politecnica delle Marche.

On the Estimate Measurement Uncertainty of the Insertion Loss in a Reverberation Chamber Including Frequency Stirring

In this paper, it is shown an enhancement of a previous model on the measurement standard uncertainty (MU) of the insertion loss (IL) in a reverberation chamber (RC) including frequency stirring (FS). Differently from the previous model, the enhanced does not require specific conditions on the parameter to be measured. Such an enhancement is applicable for all usable measurement conditions in RCs. Moreover, a useful majorant is also shown; it is obtained under a weak condition on the coefficient of variation (CV) of the parameter to be measured. Results by measurements support the validity of the proposed enhancement and of the majorant.

A mechanical mode-stirred reverberation chamber with chaotic geometry

A previous research on multivariate approach to the calculation of reverberation chamber correlation matrices is used to calculate the number of independent positions in a mode-stirred reverberation chamber. Anomalies and counterintuitive behavior are observed in terms of number of correlated matrix elements with respect to increasing frequency. This is ascribed to the regular geometry forming the baseline cavity (screened room) of a reverberation chamber, responsible for localizing energy and preserving regular modes (bouncing ball modes). Smooth wall deformations are introduced in order to create underlying Lyapunov instability of rays and then destroy survived regular modes. Numerical full-wave simulations are performed for a reverberation chamber with corner hemispheres and (off-)center wall spherical caps. Field sampling is performed by moving a mechanical carousel stirrer. It is found that wave-chaos inspired baseline geometries improve chamber performances in terms of lowest usable frequencies and number of independent cavity realizations of mechanical stirrers.

Use of Correlation Matrix to Assess the Stirring Performance of a Reverberation Chamber: a Comparative Study

The use of correlation matrices to evaluate the number of uncorrelated stirrer positions of reverberation chamber has widespread applications in electromagnetic compatibility. We present a comparative study of recent techniques based on multivariate correlation functions aimed at relating space-frequency inhomogeneities/anisotropies to the reduction of uncorrelated positions. Full wave finite-difference time domain simulations of an actual reverberation chamber are performed through an in-house parallel code. The efficiency of this code enables for capturing extensive inhomogeneous/anisotropic spatial volumes (frequency ranges). The concept of threshold crossing is revised under the light of random field sampling, which is important to the performance of arbitrary reverberation chambers.

Quantifying Volume Changing Perturbations in a Wave Chaotic System

A sensor was developed to quantitatively measure perturbations which change the volume of a wave chaotic cavity while leaving its shape intact. The sensors work in the time domain by using either scattering fidelity of the transmitted signals or time reversal mirrors. The sensors were tested experimentally by inducing volume changing perturbations to a one cubic meter mixed chaotic and regular billiard system. Perturbations which caused a volume change that is as small as 54 parts in a million were quantitatively measured. These results were obtained by using electromagnetic waves with a wavelength of about 5cm, therefore, the sensor is sensitive to extreme sub-wavelength changes of the boundaries of a cavity. The experimental results were compared with Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation results, and good agreement was found. Furthermore, the sensor was tested using a frequency domain approach on a numerical model of the star graph, which is a representative wave chaotic system. These results open up interesting applications such as: monitoring the spatial uniformity of the temperature of a homogeneous cavity during heating up / cooling down procedures, verifying the uniform displacement of a fluid inside a wave chaotic cavity by another fluid, etc.
