Delocalized single-photon Dicke states and the Leggett- Garg inequality in solid state systems

We show how to realize a single-photon Dicke state in a large one-dimensional array of two- level systems, and discuss how to test its quantum properties. Realization of single-photon Dicke states relies on the cooperative nature of the interaction between a field reservoir and an array of two-level-emitters. The resulting dynamics of the delocalized state can display Rabi-like oscillations when the number of two-level emitters exceeds several hundred. In this case the large array of emitters is essentially behaving like a mirror-less cavity. We outline how this might be realized using a multiple-quantum-well structure and discuss how the quantum nature of these oscillations could be tested with the Leggett-Garg inequality and its extensions.

Spatio-temporal vortex beams and angular momentum

We present a space-time generalization of the known spatial (monochromatic) wave vortex beams carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) along the propagation direction. Generic spatio-temporal vortex beams are polychromatic and can carry intrinsic OAM at an arbitrary angle to the mean momentum. Applying either (i) a transverse wave-vector shift or (ii) a Lorentz boost to a monochromatic Bessel beam, we construct a family of either (i) time-diffracting or (ii) non-diffracting spatio-temporal Bessel beams, which are exact solutions of the Klein-Gordon wave equations. The proposed spatio-temporal OAM states are able to describe either photon or electron vortex states (both relativistic and nonrelativistic), and can find applications in particle collisions, optics of moving media, quantum communications, and astrophysics.

Strong coupling of a spin qubit to a superconducting stripline cavity

We study electron-spin-photon coupling in a single-spin double quantum dot embedded in a superconducting stripline cavity. With an external magnetic field, we show that either a spin-orbit interaction (for InAs) or an inhomogeneous magnetic field (for Si and GaAs) could produce a strong spin-photon coupling, with a coupling strength of the order of 1 MHz. With an isotopically purified Si double dot, which has a very long spin coherence time for the electron, it is possible to reach the strong-coupling limit between the spin and the cavity photon, as in cavity quantum electrodynamics. The coupling strength and relaxation rates are calculated based on parameters of existing devices, making this proposal experimentally feasible.

Non-Markovian quantum input-output networks

Quantum input-output response analysis is a useful method for modeling the dynamics of complex quantum networks, such as those for communication or quantum control via cascade connections. Non-Markovian effects have not yet been studied in such networks. Here we extend the Markovian input-output network formalism developed in optical systems to non-Markovian cascaded networks which can be used, e.g., to analyze the input-output response of mesoscopic quantum networks. We use this formalism to explore the behavior of superconducting qubit networks, where we examine the effect of finite cavity bandwidths. We also discuss its application to open- and closed-loop control networks, and show how these networks create effective Hamiltonians for the controlled system.

Two-qubit gate operations in superconducting circuits with strong coupling and weak anharmonicity

We investigate theoretically the implementation of two-qubit gates in a system of two coupled superconducting qubits. In particular, we analyze two-qubit gate operations under the condition that the coupling strength is comparable to or even larger than the anharmonicity of the qubits. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we obtain the dependence of the two-qubit gate fidelity on the system parameters in the case of direct and indirect qubit-qubit coupling. Our numerical results can be used to identify the "safe" parameter regime for experimentally implementing two-qubit gates with high fidelity in these systems.

A proposal for factorization using Kerr nonlinearities between three harmonic oscillators

We propose an alternative method to factorize an integer by using three harmonic oscillators. These oscillators are coupled together via specific Kerr nonlinear interactions. This method can be applied even if two harmonic oscillators are prepared in mixed states. As simple examples, we show how to factorize N=15 and 35 using this approach. The effect of dissipation of the harmonic oscillators on the performance of this method is studied. We also study the realization of nonlinear interactions between the coupled oscillators. However, the probability of finding the factors of a number is inversely proportional to its input size. The probability becomes low when this number is large. We discuss the limitations of this approach.

An iterative approach for amplitude amplification with nonorthogonal measurements

Using three coupled harmonic oscillators, we present an amplitude-amplification method for factorization of an integer. We generalize the method in [arXiv:1007.4338] by employing non-orthogonal measurements on the harmonic oscillator. This method can increase the probability of obtaining the factors by repeatedly using the nonlinear interactions between the oscillators and non-orthogonal measurements. However, this approach requires an exponential amount of resources for implementation. Thus, this method cannot provide a speed-up over classical algorithms unless its limitations are resolved.

Selective darkening of degenerate transitions for implementing quantum controlled-NOT gates

We present a theoretical analysis of the selective darkening method for implementing quantum controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates. This method, which we recently proposed and demonstrated, consists of driving two transversely-coupled quantum bits (qubits) with a driving field that is resonant with one of the two qubits. For specific relative amplitudes and phases of the driving field felt by the two qubits, one of the two transitions in the degenerate pair is darkened, or in other words, becomes forbidden by effective selection rules. At these driving conditions, the evolution of the two-qubit state realizes a CNOT gate. The gate speed is found to be limited only by the coupling energy J, which is the fundamental speed limit for any entangling gate. Numerical simulations show that at gate speeds corresponding to 0.48J and 0.07J, the gate fidelity is 99% and 99.99%, respectively, and increases further for lower gate speeds. In addition, the effect of higher-lying energy levels and weak anharmonicity is studied, as well as the scalability of the method to systems of multiple qubits. We conclude that in all these respects this method is competitive with existing schemes for creating entanglement, with the added advantages of being applicable for qubits operating at fixed frequencies (either by design or for exploitation of coherence sweet-spots) and having the simplicity of microwave-only operation.

Photon-assisted Landau-Zener transition: Role of coherent superposition states

We investigate a Landau-Zener (LZ) transition process modeled by a quantum two-level system (TLS) coupled to a photon mode when the bias energy is varied linearly in time. The initial state of the photon field is assumed to be a superposition of coherent states, leading to a more intricate LZ transition. Applying the rotating-wave approximation (RWA), analytical results are obtained revealing the enhancement of the LZ probability by increasing the average photon number. We also consider the creation of entanglement and the change of photon statistics during the LZ process. Without the RWA, we find some qualitative differences of the LZ dynamics from the RWA results, e.g., the average photon number no longer monotonically enhances the LZ probability. The ramifications and implications of these results are explored.

Tunable quantum dots in monolayer graphene

We examine a graphene quantum dot formed by combining an electric and a uniform magnetic field. The electric field creates a smooth quantum well potential while the magnetic field induces an exponential tail to the dot states. The states peak in the well and the electrostatic barrier region as a result of the Klein tunneling effect. Coupling between dot states which peak in different regions can be achieved with the electric and magnetic fields. The tunability of this dot with moderate external fields could be used for designing quantum devices in monolayer graphene.

Entanglement Dynamics of Two Qubits in a Common Bath

We derive a set of hierarchical equations for qubits interacting with a Lorentz-broadened cavity mode at zero temperature, without using the rotating-wave, Born, and Markovian approximations. We use this exact method to reexamine the entanglement dynamics of two qubits interacting with a common bath, which was previously solved only under the rotating-wave and single-excitation approximations. With the exact hierarchy equation method used here, we observe significant differences in the resulting physics, compared to the previous results with various approximations. Double excitations due to counter-rotating-wave terms are also found to have remarkable effects on the dynamics of entanglement.

Quantum algorithm for obtaining the energy spectrum of a physical system

We present a polynomial-time quantum algorithm for obtaining the energy spectrum of a physical system, i.e. the differences between the eigenvalues of the system's Hamiltonian, provided that the spectrum of interest contains at most a polynomially increasing number of energy levels. A probe qubit is coupled to a quantum register that represents the system of interest such that the probe exhibits a dynamical response only when it is resonant with a transition in the system. By varying the probe's frequency and the system-probe coupling operator, any desired part of the energy spectrum can be obtained. The algorithm can also be used to deterministically prepare any energy eigenstate. As an example, we have simulated running the algorithm and obtained the energy spectrum of the water molecule.

General non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems

We present a general theory of non-Markovian dynamics for open quantum systems. We explore the non-Markovian dynamics by connecting the exact master equations with the non-equilibirum Green functions. Environmental back-actions are fully taken into account. The non-Markovian dynamics consists of non-exponential decays and dissipationless oscillations. Non-exponential decays are induced by the discontinuity in the imaginary part of the self-energy corrections. Dissipationless oscillations arise from band gaps or the finite band structure of spectral densities. The exact analytic solutions for various non-Markovian environments show that the non-Markovian dynamics can be largely understood from the environmental-modified spectra of the open systems.

Geometric Stochastic Resonance

A Brownian particle moving across a porous membrane subject to an oscillating force exhibits stochastic resonance with properties which strongly depend on the geometry of the confining cavities on the two sides of the membrane. Such a manifestation of stochastic resonance requires neither energetic nor entropic barriers, and can thus be regarded as a purely geometric effect. The magnitude of this effect is sensitive to the geometry of both the cavities and the pores, thus leading to distinctive optimal synchronization conditions.

Coherent emission from disordered arrays of driven Josephson vortices

We propose a mechanism of coherent emission from driven vortices in stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions. In contrast to super-radiance, which occurs only for highly ordered vortex lattices, we predict resonant radiation emission from weakly correlated vortex arrays. Our analytical results for the THz wave intensity, resonance frequencies, and the dependence of THz emission power on dissipation are in good agreement with the ones obtained by recent simulations.

Speed limits for quantum gates in multi-qubit systems

We use analytical and numerical calculations to obtain speed limits for various unitary quantum operations in multiqubit systems under typical experimental conditions. The operations that we consider include single-, two-, and three-qubit gates, as well as quantum-state transfer in a chain of qubits. We find in particular that simple methods for implementing two-qubit gates generally provide the fastest possible implementations of these gates. We also find that the three-qubit Toffoli gate time varies greatly depending on the type of interactions and the system's geometry, taking only slightly longer than a two-qubit controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate for a triangle geometry. The speed limit for quantum-state transfer across a qubit chain is set by the maximum spin-wave speed in the chain.

Geometric stochastic resonance in a double cavity

Geometric stochastic resonance of particles diffusing across a porous membrane subject to oscillating forces is characterized as a synchronization process. Noninteracting particle currents through a symmetric membrane pore are driven either perpendicular or parallel to the membrane, whereas harmonic-mixing spectral current components are generated by the combined action of perpendicular and parallel drives. In view of potential applications to the transport of colloids and biological molecules through narrow pores, we also consider the role of particle repulsion as a controlling factor.

Two-qubit parametric amplifier: large amplification of weak signals

Using numerical simulations, we show that two coupled qubits can amplify a weak signal about hundredfold. This can be achieved if the two qubits are biased simultaneously by this weak signal and a strong pump signal, both of which having frequencies close to the inter-level transitions in the system. The weak signal strongly affects the spectrum generated by the strong pumping drive by producing and controlling mixed harmonics with amplitudes of the order of the main harmonic of the strong drive. We show that the amplification is robust with respect to noise, with an intensity of the order of the weak signal. When deviating from the optimal regime (corresponding to strong qubit coupling and a weak-signal frequency equal to the inter-level transition frequency) the proposed amplifier becomes less efficient, but it can still considerably enhance a weak signal (by several tens). We therefore propose to use coupled qubits as a combined parametric amplifier and frequency shifter.
