Microscopic Derivation of Magnetic Flux Density Profiles, Magnetization Hysteresis Loops, and Critical Currents in Strongly Pinned Superconductors

We present a microscopic derivation, without electrodynamical assumptions, of $B(x,y,H(t))$, $M(H(t))$, and $J_c(H(t))$, in agreement with experiments on strongly pinned superconductors, for a range of values of the density and strength of the pinning sites. We numerically solve the overdamped equations of motion % dynamics of these flux-gradient-driven vortices which can be temporarily trapped at pinning centers. The field is increased (decreased) by the addition (removal) of flux lines at the sample boundary, and complete hysteresis loops can be achieved by using flux lines with opposite orientation. The pinning force per unit volume we obtain for strongly-pinned vortices, $J_c B \sim n_p f_p^{1.6}$, interpolates between the following two extreme situations: very strongly-pinned independent vortices, where $J_c B \sim n_p f_p$, and the 2D Larkin-Ovchinikov collective-pinning theory for weakly-pinned straight vortices, where $J_c B \sim n_p f_p^{2}$. Here, $n_p$ and $f_p$ are the density and maximum force of the pinning sites.

Magnetic Raman Scattering in Two-Dimensional Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnets: Spectral Shape Anomaly and Magnetostrictive Effects

We calculate the Raman spectrum of the two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet by exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo techniques on clusters of up to 144 sites and, on a 16-site cluster, by considering the phonon-magnon interaction which leads to random fluctuations of the exchange integral. Results are in good agreement with experiments on various high-T_c precursors, such as La_2CuO_4 and YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.2}. In particular, our calculations reproduce the broad lineshape of the two-magnon peak, the asymmetry about its maximum, the existence of spectral weight at high energies, and the observation of nominally forbidden A_{1g} scattering.

Quantum Interference on the Kagomé Lattice

We study quantum interference effects due to electron motion on the Kagomé lattice in a perpendicular magnetic field. These effects arise from the interference between phase factors associated with different electron closed-paths. From these we compute, analytically and numerically, the superconducting-normal phase boundary for Kagomé superconducting wire networks and Josephson junction arrays. We use an analytical approach to analyze the relationship between the interference and the complex structure present in the phase boundary, including the origin of the overall and fine structure. Our results are obtained by exactly summing over one thousand billion billions ($\sim 10^{21}$) closed paths, each one weighted by its corresponding phase factor representing the net flux enclosed by each path. We expect our computed mean-field phase diagrams to compare well with several proposed experiments.

Effective Carrier Mean-Free Path in Confined Geometries

The concept of exchange length is used to determine the effects of boundary scattering on transport in samples of circular and rectangular cross section. Analytical expressions are presented for an effective mean-free path for transport in the axial direction. The relationship to the phonon thermal conductivity is discussed. (This letter outlines the results presented in detail in the longer version, available as cond-mat/9402081)

Phonon Universal Transmission Fluctuations and Localization in Semiconductor Superlattices with a Controlled Degree of Order

We study both analytically and numerically phonon transmission fluctuations and localization in partially ordered superlattices with correlations among neighboring layers. In order to generate a sequence of layers with a varying degree of order we employ a model proposed by Hendricks and Teller as well as partially ordered versions of deterministic aperiodic superlattices. By changing a parameter measuring the correlation among adjacent layers, the Hendricks- Teller superlattice exhibits a transition from periodic ordering, with alterna- ting layers, to the phase separated opposite limit; including many intermediate arrangements and the completely random case. In the partially ordered versions of deterministic superlattices, there is short-range order (among any $N$ conse- cutive layers) and long range disorder, as in the N-state Markov chains. The average and fluctuations in the transmission, the backscattering rate, and the localization length in these multilayered systems are calculated based on the superlattice structure factors we derive analytically. The standard deviation of the transmission versus the average transmission lies on a {\it universal\/} curve irrespective of the specific type of disorder of the SL. We illustrate these general results by applying them to several GaAs-AlAs superlattices for the proposed experimental observation of phonon universal transmission fluctuations.

Transport and Boundary Scattering in Confined Geometries: Analytical Results

We utilize a geometric argument to determine the effects of boundary scattering on the carrier mean-free path in samples of various cross sections. Analytic expressions for samples with rectangular and circular cross sections are obtained. We also outline a method for incorporating these results into calculations of the thermal conductivity.

Phonon Transmission Rate, Fluctuations, and Localization in Random Semiconductor Superlattices: Green's Function Approach

We analytically study phonon transmission and localization in random superlattices by using a Green's function approach. We derive expressions for the average transmission rate and localization length, or Lyapunov exponent, in terms of the superlattice structure factor. This is done by considering the backscattering of phonons, due to the complex mass density fluctuations, which incorporates all of the forward scattering processes. These analytical results are applied to two types of random superlattices and compared with numerical simulations based on the transfer matrix method. Our analytical results show excellent agreement with the numerical data. A universal relation for the transmission fluctuations versus the average transmission is derived explicitly, and independently confirmed by numerical simulations. The transient of the distribution of transmission to the log-normal distribution for the localized phonons is also studied.

Water Droplet Avalanches

We analyze the statistics of water droplet avalanches in a continuously driven system. Distributions are obtained for avalanche size, lifetime, and time between successive avalanches, along with power spectra and return maps. For low flow rates and different water viscosities, we observe a power-law scaling in the size and lifetime distributions of water droplet avalanches, indicating that a state with no characteristic time and length scales was reached. Higher flow rates resulted in an exponential behavior with characteristic scales.

Confirmation of the Modified Bean Model from Simulations of Superconducting Vortices

From a very simple description of vortices and pinning centers and without using any electrodynamical assumptions, we obtain nonlinear density profiles of vortices in type-II dirty superconductors that result from raising or lowering an external magnetic field. The results confirm a modified Bean model description of these systems, and in particular, follow the Kim empirical form that relates the current inside the material to the local magnetic field. We also obtain realistic magnetization hysteresis loops and examine the discrete evolution of the density profiles in our systems. This evolution is not continuous, but takes place by the occurrence of avalanches of vortices promoted by the addition or extraction of vortices from the edges of the system.

Electronic Structure of Single- and Multiple-shell Carbon Fullerenes

We study the electronic states of giant single-shell and the recently discovered nested multi-shell carbon fullerenes within the tight-binding approximation. We use two different approaches, one based on iterations and the other on symmetry, to obtain the $π$-state energy spectra of large fullerene cages: $C_{240}$, $C_{540}$, $C_{960}$, $C_{1500}$, $C_{2160}$ and $C_{2940}$. Our iteration technique reduces the dimensionality of the problem by more than one order of magnitude (factors of $\sim 12$ and $20$), while the symmetry-based approach reduces it by a factor of $10$. We also find formulae for the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO and LUMO) energies of $C_{60{\cdot}n^{2}}$ fullerenes as a function of $n$, demonstrating a tendency towards metallic regime for increasing $n$. For multi-shell fullerenes, we analytically obtain the eigenvalues of the intershell interaction.

Recursion and Path-Integral Approaches to the Analytic Study of the Electronic Properties of $C_{60}$

The recursion and path-integral methods are applied to analytically study the electronic structure of a neutral $C_{60}$ molecule. We employ a tight-binding Hamiltonian which considers both the $s$ and $p$ valence electrons of carbon. From the recursion method, we obtain closed-form {\it analytic} expressions for the $π$ and $σ$ eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, including the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) states, and the Green's functions. We also present the local densities of states around several ring clusters, which can be probed experimentally by using, for instance, a scanning tunneling microscope. {}From a path-integral method, identical results for the energy spectrum are also derived. In addition, the local density of states on one carbon atom is obtained; from this we can derive the degree of degeneracy of the energy levels.

Analytical solution for the Fermi-sea energy of two-dimensional electrons in a magnetic field: lattice path-integral approach and quantum interference

We derive an exact solution for the total kinetic energy of noninteracting spinless electrons at half-filling in two-dimensional bipartite lattices. We employ a conceptually novel approach that maps this problem exactly into a Feynman-Vdovichenko lattice walker. The problem is then reduced to the analytic study of the sum of magnetic phase factors on closed paths. We compare our results with the ones obtained through numerical calculations.

Mean Field Theory of Sandpile Avalanches: from the Intermittent to the Continuous Flow Regime

We model the dynamics of avalanches in granular assemblies in partly filled rotating cylinders using a mean-field approach. We show that, upon varying the cylinder angular velocity $ω$, the system undergoes a hysteresis cycle between an intermittent and a continuous flow regimes. In the intermittent flow regime, and approaching the transition, the avalanche duration exhibits critical slowing down with a temporal power-law divergence. Upon adding a white noise term, and close to the transition, the distribution of avalanche durations is also a power-law. The hysteresis, as well as the statistics of avalanche durations, are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments in partly filled rotating cylinders.
