Comparing hyperbolic and extremal lengths for shortest curves

We give a lower bound for the widths of the collars of certain short partial pants decomposition of the surface. Then we apply this to obtain upper bounds of the renormalized volume of certain Schottky manifolds in terms of the hyperbolic length of compressible curves.

On reflections of congruence hyperbolic manifolds

We show that the standard method for constructing closed hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimension possessing reflective symmetries typically produces reflections whose fixed point sets are nonseparating.

Existence of Minimal Surfaces in Infinite Volume Hyperbolic 3-manifolds

The existence of embedded minimal surfaces in non-compact 3-manifolds remains a largely unresolved and challenging problem in geometry. In this paper, we address several open cases regarding the existence of finite-area, embedded, complete, minimal surfaces in infinite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Among other results, for doubly degenerate manifolds with bounded geometry, we prove a dichotomy: either every such manifold contains a closed minimal surface or there exists such a manifold admitting a foliation by closed minimal surfaces. We also construct the first examples of Schottky manifolds with closed minimal surfaces and demonstrate the existence of Schottky manifolds containing infinitely many closed minimal surfaces. Lastly, for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with rank-1 cusps, we show that a broad class of these manifolds must contain a finite-area, embedded, complete minimal surface.

Epstein curves and holography of the Schwarzian action

We apply Epstein's construction of hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic disk $\mathbb D$ to prove identities between the Schwarzian action on $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb R)\backslash \mathrm{Diff}^3 (\mathbb S^1)$, the length of the corresponding Epstein curve in $\mathbb D$, and the area enclosed by the Epstein curve. These results are inspired by the holographic duality between Jackiw--Teitelboim gravity and Schwarzian field theory. We also show that the horocycle truncation used in the construction of the Epstein curve defines a renormalized length of hyperbolic geodesics in $\mathbb D$, which coincides with the logarithm of the bi-local observable of Schwarzian field theory. The construction of the Epstein curve also extends to the coadjoint orbits $\operatorname{PSL}_2^{(n)}(\mathbb R)\backslash \mathrm{Diff}^3 (\mathbb S^1)$, and we obtain the same identities for the analog of the Schwarzian action on these coadjoint orbits. Furthermore, we show that the Schwarzian action is the derivative of the Loewner energy of the welded Jordan curve. This energy is the action functional of Schramm--Loewner evolutions and holographically expressed as a renormalized volume in hyperbolic $3$-space. As a by-product of these relations, we obtain two immediate proofs of the non-negativity of the Schwarzian action using the isoperimetric inequality and the monotonicity of the Loewner energy.

Volume comparison on finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds

On finite-volume hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, we compare volumes of different metrics using the exponential convergence of Ricci-DeTurck flow toward the hyperbolic metric $h_0$. We prove that among metrics with scalar curvature bounded below by $-6$, $h_0$ minimizes the volume. Moreover, for metrics that are either uniformly $C^2$-close to $h_0$ or asymptotically cusped of order at least two, equality holds if and only if the metric is isometric to $h_0$.

On the stability of Ricci flow on hyperbolic 3-manifolds of finite volume

On a hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume, we prove that if the initial metric is sufficiently close to the hyperbolic metric $h_0$, then the normalized Ricci-DeTurck flow exists for all time and converges exponentially fast to $h_0$ in a weighted Hölder norm. A key ingredient of our approach is the application of interpolation theory. Furthermore, this result is a valuable tool for investigating minimal surface entropy, which quantifies the growth rate of the number of closed minimal surfaces in terms of genus. We explore this in [17].

Minimal surface entropy and applications of Ricci flow on finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds

This paper studies minimal surface entropy (the exponential asymptotic growth of the number of minimal surfaces up to a given value of area) for negatively curved metrics on hyperbolic $3$-manifolds of finite volume, particularly its comparison to the hyperbolic minimal surface entropy in terms of sectional and scalar curvature. On one hand, for metrics that are bilipschitz equivalent to the hyperbolic metric and have sectional curvature bounded above by $-1$ and uniformly bounded below, we show that the entropy achieves its minimum if and only if the metric is hyperbolic. On the other hand, by analyzing the convergence rate of the Ricci flow toward the hyperbolic metric, we prove that among all metrics with scalar curvature bounded below by $-6$ and with non-positive sectional curvature on the cusps, the entropy is maximized at the hyperbolic metric, provided that it is infinitesimally rigid. Furthermore, if the metrics are uniformly $C^0$-close to the hyperbolic metric and asymptotically cusped, then the entropy associated with the Lebesgue measure is uniquely maximized at the hyperbolic metric.

Cheeger constant of convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We study the Cheeger isoperimetric constant as a functional in the space of convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds which are either quasi-Fuchsian or acylindrical. We prove that the global maximum is attained uniquely at the Fuchsian locus.

Upper bounds on Renormalized Volume for Schottky groups

In this article we show that for any given Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g$, we can bound (from above) the renormalized volume of a (hyperbolic) Schottky group with boundary at infinity conformal to $Σ$ in terms of the genus and the combined extremal lengths on $Σ$ of $(g-1)$ disjoint, non-homotopic, simple closed compressible curves. This result is used to partially answer a question posed by Maldacena about comparing renormalized volumes of Schottky and Fuchsian manifolds with the same conformal boundary.

Universal Liouville action as a renormalized volume and its gradient flow

The universal Liouville action (also known as the Loewner energy for Jordan curves) is a Kähler potential on the Weil-Petersson universal Teichmüller space, which is identified with the family of Weil-Petersson quasicircles via conformal welding. Our main result shows that, under regularity assumptions, the universal Liouville action equals the renormalized volume of the hyperbolic $3$-manifold bounded by the two Epstein-Poincaré surfaces associated with the quasicircle. We also study the gradient descent flow of the universal Liouville action for the Weil-Petersson metric and show that the flow always converges to the origin (the circle). This provides a bound of the Weil-Petersson distance to the origin by the universal Liouville action.

W-volume for planar domains with circular boundary

We extend the notion of Epstein maps to conformal metrics on submanifolds of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^n=\partial_\infty\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$. Using this construction for curves in $\mathbb{S}^2$, we define the W-volume for conformal metrics on domains in $\overline{\mathbb{C}}=\mathbb{S}^2$ with round circles as boundaries. We show that the W-volume is a realization in $\mathbb{H}^3$ of the determinant of the Laplacian. We use this and work of Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak to show that a classical Schottky uniformization of a genus g Riemann surface has renormalized volume bounded by $(6g-8)π$, and by $-2π$ under further assumptions. This gives a partial answer to a question of Maldacena. We also then provide a $\mathbb{H}^3$ realization of the Loewner energy of a $C^{2,α}$ Jordan curve.

On the topology and index of minimal/Bryant framed surfaces

We study framed surfaces, which are a class of Euclidean minimal and hyperbolic CMC-1 surfaces that generalize immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and Bryant surfaces. For this class we prove a lower bound on the (unrestricted) Morse index by a linear function of the genus, number of ends and number of branch points (counting multiplicity), generalizing a result by Chodosh and the first author. We include as well a description of the 1-to-1 correspondence between Euclidean minimal and Bryant surfaces, known in the literature as Lawson's correspondence.

Uniform spectral gap and orthogeodesic counting for strong convergence of Kleinian groups

We show convergence of small eigenvalues for geometrically finite hyperbolic $n$-manifolds under strong limits. For a class of convergent convex sets in a strongly convergent sequence of Kleinian groups, we use the spectral gap of the limit manifold and the exponentially mixing property of the geodesic flow along the strongly convergent sequence to find asymptotically uniform counting formulas for the number of orthogeodesics between the convex sets. In particular, this provides asymptotically uniform counting formulas (with respect to length) for orthogeodesics between converging Margulis tubes, geodesic loops based at converging basepoints, and primitive closed geodesics.

Besse projective spaces with many diameters

It is known that Blaschke manifolds (where injectivity radius equals diameter) are Besse manifolds (where all geodesics are closed). We show that Besse manifolds with sufficiently many diameter realizing directions are Blaschke. We also provide bounds in terms of diameter on the length of the shortest closed geodesic for pinched curvature metrics on simply connected manifolds.

Isoperimetric interpretation for the renormalized volume of convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We reinterpret the renormalized volume as the asymptotic difference of the isoperimetric profiles for convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds. By similar techniques we also prove a sharp Minkowski inequality for horospherically convex sets in $\mathbb{H}^3$. Finally, we include the classification of stable constant mean curvature surfaces in regions bounded by two geodesic planes in $\mathbb{H}^3$ or in cyclic quotients of $\mathbb{H}^3$.

Volume bounds for the canonical lift complement of a random geodesic

Given a filling primitive geodesic curve in a closed hyperbolic surface one obtains a hyperbolic three-manifold as the complement of the curve's canonical lift to the projective tangent bundle. In this paper we give the first known lower bound for the volume of these manifolds in terms of the length of generic curves. We show that estimating the volume from below can be reduced to a counting problem in the unit tangent bundle and solve it by applying an exponential multiple mixing result for the geodesic flow.
