Quenching of photon and pion spectra at intermediate RHIC energy

Single prompt photon and pion spectra in p-p and Au-Au collisions at intermediate RHIC energy, s^1/2 = 62.4 GeV, are computed at large transverse momentum in perturbative QCD. Next-to-leading order calculations in p-p scattering are first presented. The quenching of the prompt photon and pion yield due to energy loss processes in central Au-Au with respect to p-p collisions is then predicted. At this energy, the small phase-space available to produce hard partons makes the pion quenching almost as pronounced as at s^1/2 = 200 GeV, despite the smaller gluon density of the produced medium. In the photon sector, energy loss effects prove small because of this very phase-space restriction, which favours the direct production channel. A significant suppression of high-pt photons is however predicted, because of a strong isospin effect together with the depletion of nuclear parton densities at large x.

Photon-tagged correlations in heavy-ion collisions: kinematic requirements and a case study

Photon-tagged correlations may be useful to determine how the dense partonic medium produced in heavy-ion collisions affects the fragmentation of high-energy quarks and gluons into a leading hadron. In these proceedings, I discuss the kinematic requirements for the hadron and the prompt photon transverse momentum cuts. A case study at LHC energy, tagging on p_T > 20 GeV and p_T > 50 GeV photons, is then briefly examined.

A systematic study of J/psi suppression in cold nuclear matter

Based on a Glauber model, a statistical analysis of all mid-rapidity J/psi hadroproduction and leptoproduction data on nuclear targets is carried out. This allows us to determine the J/psi-nucleon inelastic cross section, whose knowledge is crucial to interpret the J/psi suppression observed in heavy-ion collisions, at SPS and at RHIC. The values of sigma are extracted from each experiment. A clear tension between the different data sets is reported. The global fit of all data gives sigma=3.4+/-0.2 mb, which is significantly smaller than previous estimates. A similar value, sigma=3.5+/-0.2 mb, is obtained when the nDS nuclear parton densities are included in the analysis, although we emphasize that the present uncertainties on gluon (anti)shadowing do not allow for a precise determination of sigma. Finally, no significant energy dependence of the J/psi-N interaction is observed, unless strong nuclear modifications of the parton densities are assumed.

Hard pion and prompt photon at RHIC, from single to double inclusive production

Single pion and prompt photon large transverse momentum spectra in p-p and Au-Au collisions are computed in perturbative QCD at RHIC energy, s^1/2 = 200 GeV. Next-to-leading order calculations are discussed and compared with p-p scattering data. Subsequently, quenching factors are computed to leading order for both pions and photons within the same energy loss model. The good agreement with PHENIX preliminary data allows for a lower estimate of the energy density reached in central Au-Au collisions, epsilon > 10 GeV/fm^3. Double inclusive photon-pion production in p-p and Au-Au collisions is then addressed. Next-to-leading order corrections prove rather small in p-p scattering. In Au-Au collisions, the quenching of momentum-correlation spectra is seen to be sensitive to parton energy loss processes, which would help to understand how the fragmentation dynamics is modified in nuclear collisions at RHIC.

Heavy-quarkonium interaction in QCD at finite temperature

We explore the temperature dependence of the heavy-quarkonium interaction based on the Bhanot-Peskin leading order perturbative QCD analysis. The Wilson coefficients are computed solving the Schrodinger equation in a screened Coulomb heavy-quark potential. The inverse Mellin transform of the Wilson coefficients then allows for the computation of the 1S and 2S heavy-quarkonium gluon and pion total cross section at finite screening/temperature. As a phenomenological illustration, the temperature dependence of the 1S charmonium thermal width is determined and compared to recent lattice QCD results.

Tomography of cold and hot QCD matter : tools and diagnosis

The probability distribution D(epsilon) in the energy loss incurred by incoming and outgoing hard quarks in a QCD medium is computed numerically from the BDMPS gluon spectrum. It is shown to follow an empirical log-normal behavior which allows us to give the quenching weight a simple analytic parameterization. The dependence of our results under the infrared and ultraviolet sensitivity of the gluon spectrum is investigated as well. Finally, as an illustration, we discuss and compare estimates for the quenching of hadron spectra in nuclear matter and in a quark-gluon plasma to HERA and RHIC preliminary data.

Photon tagged correlations in heavy ion collisions

A detailed study of various two-particle correlation functions involving photons and neutral pions is presented in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at the LHC energy. The aim is to use these correlation functions to quantify the effect of the medium (in lead-lead collisions) on the jet decay properties. The calculations are carried out at the leading order in QCD but the next-to-leading order corrections are also discussed. The competition between different production mechanisms makes the connection between the jet energy loss spectrum and the gamma-pi correlations somewhat indirect while the gamma-gamma correlations have a clearer relation to the jet fragmentation properties.

Prompt photon production in nuclear collisions

We discuss the energy loss effects on single prompt photon production in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energy. The production of correlated photon pairs at the LHC is also considered.

Quenching of hadron spectra in DIS on nuclear targets

The multiple scatterings incurred by a hard quark produced in a nuclear medium induce the emission of soft gluons which carry a fraction of the quark energy and eventually affect the hadronization process. Here, the depletion of semi-inclusive hadron spectra in DIS on various nuclei (N, Ne, Cu, Kr) is computed as a function of nu and z to leading order in alpha_s through medium-modified fragmentation functions. Using the transport coefficient q previously determined from Drell-Yan production, the predictions are found to be in good agreement with EMC and HERMES preliminary data. Calculations on Xe targets are also presented and discussed.

Constraints on quark energy loss from Drell-Yan data

A leading-order analysis of E866/NuSea and NA3 Drell-Yan data in nuclei is carried out. At Fermilab energy, the large uncertainties in the amount of sea quark shadowing prohibit clarifying the origin of the nuclear dependence observed experimentally. On the other hand, the small shadowing contribution to the Drell-Yan process in pi- A collisions at SPS allows one to set tight constraints on the energy loss of fast quarks in nuclear matter. We find the transport coefficient to be q = 0.24+/-0.18 GeV/fm^2 that corresponds to a mean energy loss per unit length -dE/dz = 0.20+/-0.15 GeV/fm for E > 50 GeV quarks in a large (A=200) nucleus.

Charmonium suppression in p-A collisions at RHIC

We discuss charmonium production in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies under the assumption of xF and x2 scaling. We find that all the ambiguities due to energy loss are gone at this energy and therefore data will reveal the scaling law, if any. These p-A data will also be crucial to interpret nucleus-nucleus data with respect to a possible formation of a quark gluon plasma because the extrapolations for charmonium production from the present p-A data to RHIC energies, based on the two scaling laws, differ by a factor of four.
