This paper is a rigorous study of two dual pairs of momentum maps arising in the context of fluid equations whose configuration Lie group is the group of automorphism of a trivial principal bundle, generically called here non-abelian fluids. It is shown that the actions involved are mutually completely orthogonal, which directly implies the dual pair property.
This paper provides a full geometric development of a new technique called un-reduction, for dealing with dynamics and optimal control problems posed on spaces that are unwieldy for numerical implementation. The technique, which was originally concieved for an application to image dynamics, uses Lagrangian reduction by symmetry in reverse. A deeper understanding of un-reduction leads to new developments in image matching which serve to illustrate the mathematical power of the technique.
We present several principal bundles of embeddings of compact manifolds (with or without boundary) whose base manifolds are nonlinear Grassmannians. We study their infinite dimensional differential manifold structure in the Fréchet category. This study is motivated by the occurrence of such objects in the geometric Lagrangian formulation of free boundary continuum mechanics and in the study of the associated infinite dimensional dual pairs structures.
We construct a dual pair associated to the Hamiltonian geometric formulation of perfect fluids with free boundaries. This dual pair is defined on the cotangent bundle of the space of volume preserving embeddings of a manifold with boundary into a boundaryless manifold of the same dimension. The dual pair properties are rigorously verified in the infinite dimensional Fréchet manifold setting. It provides an example of a dual pair associated to actions that are not completely mutually orthogonal.
The Lagrange-Poincare equations of classical mechanics are cast into a field theoretic context together with their associated constrained variational principle. An integrability/reconstruction condition is established that relates solutions of the original problem with those of the reduced problem. The Kelvin-Noether theorem is formulated in this context. Applications to the isoperimetric problem, the Skyrme model for meson interaction, metamorphosis image dynamics, and molecular strands illustrate various aspects of the theory.
Euler-Poincare equations are derived for the dynamical folding of charged molecular strands (such as DNA) modeled as flexible continuous filamentary distributions of interacting rigid charge conformations. The new feature is that the equations of motion for the dynamics of such molecular strands are nonlocal when the screened Coulomb interactions, or Lennard-Jones potentials between pairs of charges are included. These nonlocal dynamical equations are derived in the convective representation of continuum motion by using modified Euler-Poincare and Hamilton-Pontryagin variational formulations that illuminate the various approaches within the framework of symmetry reduction of Hamilton's principle for exact geometric rods. In the absence of nonlocal interactions, the equations recover the classical Kirchhoff theory of elastic rods in the spatial representation. The motion equations in the convective representation are shown to be affine Euler-Poincare equations relative to a certain cocycle. This property relates the geometry of the molecular strands to that of complex fluids. An elegant change of variables allows a direct passage from the infinite dimensional point of view to the covariant formulation in terms of Lagrange-Poincare equations. In another revealing perspective, the convective representation of the nonlocal equations of molecular strand motion is transformed into quaternionic form.
