Lectures on multi-particle production in the Glasma

In the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory, colliding sheets of Colored Glass form a strongly interacting, non-equilibrium state called the Glasma. How Colored Glass shatters to form the Glasma, the properties of the Glasma, and how the Glasma thermalizes into a Quark Gluon Plasma(QGP) are questions of central interest in understanding the properties of the strongly interacting matter produced in heavy ion collisions. We argue that these questions can be addressed in the framework of field theories with strong time dependent external sources. Albeit such field theories are non-perturbative for arbitrarily weak coupling, moments of the multiplicity distribution can be computed systematically in powers of the coupling constant. We demonstrate that the average multiplicity can be (straightforwardly) computed to leading order in the coupling and (remarkably) to next-to-leading order as well. We relate our formalism to results from previous 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional numerical simulations of the Glasma fields. The expanding Glasma is unstable; small fluctuations in the initial conditions grow exponentially with the square root of the proper time. Whether this explosive growth leads to early thermalization in heavy ion collisions requires at present a better understanding of these fluctuations on the light cone. In the final lecture, motivated by recent work of Bialas and Jezabek, we discuss the widely observed phenomenon of limiting fragmentation in the CGC framework.

Distribution of multiple scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions at high energy

We consider proton-nucleus collisions at high energy in the Color Glass Condensate framework, and extract from the gluon production cross-section the probabilities of having a definite number of multiple scatterings in the nucleus. Various properties of the distribution of the number of multiple scatterings are studied, and we conclude that events in which the momentum of a hard jet is compensated by many much softer particles on the opposite side are very unlikely except for extreme values of the saturation momentum. In the same framework, we also investigate the possibility to estimate the impact parameter of a proton-nucleus collision, from the measure of the multiplicity of its final state.

Drell-Yan production and Lam-Tung relation in the Color Glass Condensate formalism

We study the Drell-Yan production cross section and structure functions in proton (deuteron)-nucleus collisions using the Color Glass Condensate formalism. The nucleus is treated in the Color Glass Condensate framework which includes both higher twist effects due to the inclusion of multiple scatterings and leading twist pQCD shadowing due to the small x resummation, while the proton (or deuteron) is treated within the DGLAP improved parton model. In particular, the Drell-Yan structure functions are used in order to investigate the Lam-Tung relation at small x, which is known to be identically zero at leading twist up to Next-to-Leading order, and is thus a good playground for studying higher twist effects. In agreement with this, we find that violations of this relation are more important for low momentum and invariant mass of the Drell-Yan pair, and also in the region of rapidity that corresponds to smaller values of x in the nucleus.

Particle production and AGK relations in the Color Glass Condensate picture

In this talk, we discuss some general properties of particle production in a field theory coupled to strong time dependent sources, and techniques to compute the spectrum of the produced particles in such theories. We also discuss the application of these results to the description of hadron or heavy ion collisions in the Color Glass Condensate framework.

Limiting fragmentation in hadron-hadron collisions at high energies

Limiting fragmentation in proton-proton, deuteron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions is analyzed in the framework of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation in high energy QCD. Good agreement with experimental data is obtained for a wide range of energies. Further detailed tests of limiting fragmentation at RHIC and the LHC will provide insight into the evolution equations for high energy QCD.

Quark pair production in high energy pA collisions: General features

A consistent treatment of both multiple scattering and small x quantum evolution effects on pair production in high energy pA collisions is feasible in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate (hep-ph/0402257). We first discuss the properties of quark pair production in the classical effective theory where only multiple scattering effects are included. Explicit results are given for pair production as a function of the invariant mass of pairs, the pair momenta, the atomic mass number A and the quark mass. We relate the logarithms that appear in our formulation of pair production to logarithms that appear in the limit of collinear factorization in QCD. Violations of kT factorization and medium modifications, as represented by the Cronin effect, are also investigated. We next consider how small x quantum evolution (shadowing) effects modify the results for pair production. In particular, we provide results for the rapidity distribution of pairs and the dependence of the Cronin effect on rapidity. We discuss the dependence of our results on the initial conditions for small x evolution and comment on its implications for pair production at RHIC and the LHC.

Gluon propagation inside a high-energy nucleus

We show that, in the light-cone gauge, it is possible to derive in a very simple way the solution of the classical Yang-Mills equations for the collision between a nucleus and a proton. One important step of the calculation is the derivation of a formula that describes the propagation of a gluon in the background color field of the nucleus. This allows us to calculate observables in pA collisions in a more straightforward fashion than already proposed. We discuss also the comparison between light-cone gauge and covariant gauge in view of further investigations involving higher order corrections.

Quantitative study of the violation of kt-factorization in hadroproduction of quarks at collider energies

We demonstrate the violation of kT-factorization for quark production in high energy hadronic collisions. This violation is quantified in the Color Glass Condensate framework and studied as a function of the quark mass, the quark transverse momentum, and the saturation scale Qsat, which is a measure of large parton densities. At x values where parton densities are large but leading twist shadowing effects are still small, violations of kT-factorization can be significant - especially for lighter quarks. At very small x, where leading twist shadowing is large, we show that violations of kT-factorization are relatively weaker.

Photon and dilepton production in the Quark-Gluon plasma: perturbation theory vs lattice QCD

This talk reviews the status of QCD calculations of photon and dilepton production rates in a Quark-Gluon plasma. Theses rates are known to order ${\cal O}(α_s)$. Their calculations involve various resummations to account for well identified physical effects that are briefly described. Lattice calculations of the spectral functions give also access to the dilepton rates. Comparison with perturbative results points to inconsistencies in both approaches when the dilepton energy becomes small.

Transient photon production in a QGP

We discuss the shortcomings of a formula that has been used in the literature to compute the number of photons emitted by a hot or dense system during a finite time, and show that the transient effects it predicts for the photon rate are unphysical.

QCD calculations of thermal photon and dilepton production

In this talk, I review new developments of QCD calculations of photon and dilepton production rates in a Quark-Gluon plasma. All the rates are now known up to $O(α_s)$ both for photons and dileptons, thanks to the resummation of multiple scatterings. For dileptons, a direct numerical calculation on the lattice attempted recently will also be discussed.

Photon production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions

We calculate the photon production cross-section in $pA$ collisions under the assumption that the nucleus has reached the saturation regime, while the proton can be described by the standard parton distribution functions. We show that due to the strong classical field $O(1/g)$ of the nucleus, bremsstrahlung diagrams become dominant over the direct photon diagrams. In particular, we show that $γ-$jet transverse momentum spectrum and correlations are very sensitive to gluon saturation effects in the nucleus.

Two-loop Compton and annihilation processes in thermal QCD

We calculate the Compton and annihilation production of a soft static lepton pair in a quark-gluon plasma in the two-loop approximation. We work in the context of the effective perturbative expansion based on the resummation of hard thermal loops. Double counting is avoided by subtracting appropriate counterterms. It is found that the two-loop diagrams give contributions of the same order as the one-loop diagram. Furthermore, these contributions are necessary to obtain agreement with the naive perturbative expansion in the limit of vanishing thermal masses.

A new approach for the vertical part of the contour in thermal field theories

A lot of work has been devoted in the past to understand the role of vertical branch of the time path in thermal field theories, and in particular to see how to deal with it in the real-time formalism. Unlike what is commonly believed, I emphasize on the fact that the vertical part of the path contributes to real-time Green's functions, and I prove that this contribution is taken into account simply by the substitution $n(ω_{\boldsymbol k})\to n(|k_o|)$ in the real time Feynman rules. This new proof is based on very simple algebraic properties of the contour integration.

Quasi-real photon production in thermal QCD

In this proceedings, I consider two-loop contributions to real photon production in thermal QCD. If the photon is strictly massless, strong collinear divergences appear in this calculation. These singularities are regularized by the quark thermal mass of order $gT$, which generates powers of $1/g$, so that the corresponding terms are strongly enhanced with respect to naive expectations of their order of magnitude.

Ambiguities in the zero momentum limit of the thermal $π^oγγ$ triangle diagram

Modifications of the $π^o\to 2γ$ decay amplitude by thermal effects have already been considered by several authors, leading to quite different results. I consider in this paper the triangle diagram connecting a neutral pion to two photons in a constituent quark model, within the real-time formulation of thermal field theory and study the zero external momentum limit of this diagram. It appears that this limit is not unique and depends strongly on the kinematical configuration of the external particles. This non-uniqueness is shown to explain the contradiction between existing results. I end with some considerations suggesting that this decay amplitude may be significantly modified by the resummation of hard thermal loops, due to infrared singularities.
