Some modular abelian surfaces

We use the main theorem of Boxer-Calegari-Gee-Pilloni (arXiv:1812.09269) to give explicit examples of modular abelian surfaces $A$ over $\mathbf{Q}$ without extra endomorhpisms such that $A$ has good reduction outside the primes 2, 3, 5, and 7.

Modularity Lifting beyond the Taylor-Wiles Method

We prove new modularity lifting theorems for p-adic Galois representations in situations where the methods of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles do not apply. Previous generalizations of these methods have been restricted to situations where the automorphic forms in question contribute to a single degree of cohomology. In practice, this imposes several restrictions -- one must be in a Shimura variety setting and the automorphic forms must be of regular weight at infinity. In this paper, we essentially show how to remove these restrictions. Our most general result is a modularity lifting theorem which, on the automorphic side applies to automorphic forms on the group GL(n) over a general number field; it is contingent on a conjecture which, in particular, predicts the existence of Galois representations associated to torsion classes in the cohomology of the associated locally symmetric space. We show that if this conjecture holds, then our main theorem implies the following: if E is an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field, then E is potentially automorphic and satisfies the Sato--Tate conjecture. In addition, we also prove some unconditional results. For example, in the setting of GL(2) over Q, we identify certain minimal global deformation rings with the Hecke algebras acting on spaces of p-adic Katz modular forms of weight one. Such algebras may well contain p-torsion. Moreover, we also completely solved the problem (for p odd) of determining the multiplicity of an irreducible modular representation rhobar in the Jacobian J_1(N), where N is the minimal level such that rhobar arises in weight two.

Modularity Lifting Theorems beyond the Taylor-Wiles Method. II

In a previous paper [CG], we showed how one could generalize Taylor-Wiles modularity lifting theorems [Wil95, TW95] to contexts beyond those in which the automorphic forms in question arose from the middle degree cohomology of Shimura varieties, in particular, to contexts in which the relevant automorphic forms contributed to cohomology in exactly two degrees. In this sequel, we extend our method to the general case in which Galois representations are expected to occur in cohomology, contingent on the (as yet unproven) existence of certain Galois representations with the expected properties. As an application, we prove the following result (conditional on the conjectures mentioned above): If E is an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field, then E is potentially modular, and the Sato-Tate conjecture holds for E.

Explicit Serre weights for two-dimensional Galois representations

We prove the explicit version of the Buzzard--Diamond--Jarvis conjecture formulated by Diamond--Dembélé--Roberts. More precisely, we prove that it is equivalent to the original Buzzard--Diamond--Jarvis conjecture, which was proved for odd primes (under a mild Taylor--Wiles hypothesis) in earlier work of the third author and coauthors.

Irreducibility of automorphic Galois representations of GL(n), n at most 5

Let pi be a regular, algebraic, essentially self-dual cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_F), where F is a totally real field and n is at most 5. We show that for all primes l, the l-adic Galois representations associated to pi are irreducible, and for all but finitely many primes l, the mod l Galois representations associated to pi are also irreducible. We also show that the Lie algebras of the Zariski closures of the l-adic representations are independent of l.

The Stable Homology of Congruence Subgroups

In a previous paper, the author (together with Matthew Emerton) proved that the completed cohomology groups of SL_N(Z) are stable in fixed degree as N goes to infinity (Z may be replaced by the ring O_F of integers of any number field). In this paper, we relate these completed cohomology groups to K-theory and Galois cohomology. Various consequences include showing that Borel's stable classes become infinitely p-divisible up the p-congruence tower if and only if a certain p-adic zeta value is non-zero. We use our results to compute H_2(Gamma_N(p),F_p) (for sufficiently large N) where Gamma_N(p) is the full level-p congruence subgroup of SL_N(Z).

Counting Perron Numbers by Absolute Value

We count various classes of algebraic integers of fixed degree by their largest absolute value. The classes of integers considered include all algebraic integers, Perron numbers, totally real integers, and totally complex integers. We give qualitative and quantitative results concerning the distribution of Perron numbers, answering in part a question of W. Thurston.

Non-minimal modularity lifting in weight one

We prove an integral R = T theorem for odd two dimensional p-adic representations of the absolute Galois group which are unramified at p, extending results of [CG] to the non-minimal case. We prove, for any p, the existence of Katz modular forms modulo p of weight one which do not lift to characteristic zero.

Abelian Spiders

If G is a finite graph, then the largest eigenvalue L of the adjacency matrix of G is a totally real algebraic integer (L is the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of G). We say that G is abelian if the field generated by L^2 is abelian. Given a fixed graph G and a fixed set of vertices of G, we define a spider graph to be a graph obtained by attaching to each of the chosen vertices of G some 2-valent trees of finite length. The main result is that only finitely many of the corresponding spider graphs are both abelian and not Dynkin diagrams, and that all such spiders can be effectively enumerated; this generalizes a previous result of Calegari, Morrison, and Snyder. The main theorem has applications to the classification of finite index subfactors. We also prove that the set of Salem numbers of "abelian type" is discrete.

Finiteness of unramified deformation rings

We prove that the universal unramified deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{unr}}$ of a continuous Galois representation $\overlineρ: G_{F^{+}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_n(k)$ (for a totally real field $F^{+}$ and finite field $k$) is finite over $\mathcal{O} = W(k)$ in many cases. We also prove (under similar hypotheses) that the universal deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{univ}}$ is finite over the local deformation ring $R^{\mathrm{loc}}$.

Hecke Operators on Stable Cohomology

We prove that the completed cohomology groups of SL_N(Z) in fixed degree stabilize as N goes to infinity. We also prove that the action of Hecke operators on stable cohomology is trivial, in a precisely defined sense.

A torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence

We study torsion in the homology of arithmetic groups and give evidence that it plays a role in the Langlands program. We prove, among other results, a numerical form of a Jacquet--Langlands correspondence in the torsion setting.

The Artin Conjecture for some S_5-extensions

We establish some new cases of Artin's conjecture. Our results apply to Galois representations over $\Q$ with image $S_5$ satisfying certain local hypotheses, the most important of which is that complex conjugation is conjugate to $(12)(34)$. In fact, we prove the stronger claim conjectured by Langlands that these representations are automorphic. For the irreducible representations of dimensions 4 and 6, our result follows from known 2-dimensional cases of Artin's conjecture (proved by Sasaki) as well as the functorial properties of the Asai transfer proved by Ramakrishnan. For the irreducible representations of dimension 5, we encounter the problem of descending an automorphic form from a quadratic extension compatibly with the Galois representation. This problem is partly solved by working instead with a four dimensional representation of some central extension of $S_5$. Our modularity results in this case are contingent on the non-vanishing of a certain Dedekind zeta function on the real line in the critical strip. A result of Booker show that one can (in principle) explicitly verify this non-vanishing, and with Booker's help we give an example, verifying Artin's conjecture for representations coming from the (Galois closure) of the quintic field $K$ of smallest discriminant (1609).

Even Galois Representations and the Fontaine--Mazur conjecture II

We prove, under mild hypotheses, that there are no irreducible two-dimensional_even_ Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qbar/\Q)$ which are de Rham with distinct Hodge--Tate weights. This removes the "ordinary" hypothesis required in previous work of the author. We construct examples of irreducible two-dimensional residual representations that have no characteristic zero geometric (= de Rham) deformations.
