Au-dela du Modele Standard [Beyond the Standard Model]

[These lecture notes are intended as a pedagogical introduction to several popular extensions of the standard model of strong and electroweak interactions. The topics include the Higgs sector, the left-right symmetric model, grand unification and supersymmetry. Phenomenological consequences and search procedures are emphasized.]

Discovering and Studying Bileptons with e-e- Collisions

We analyze the prospects for discovering and unraveling the nature of doubly-charged bileptons at a linear collider of the next generation running in its electron-electron colliding mode. We stress the importance of initial state radiation, beam spread and polarization, and compute the discovery bounds. The gauge nature of vector bileptons can be determined by studying hard photon emission.

Systematics Effects in $Z'$ Searches at the NLC

We investigate the incidence of several systematic effects on the $Z'$ discovery limits of the NLC. These include the initial state radiation and the systematic errors due to the imperfect polarization measurement, the finite detector angular resolution and the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. We focus on three reactions involving leptonic couplings: muon pair production, Bhabha scattering and Møller scattering.

Production of Two Non-Conjugate Leptoquarks in $e^-e^-$ Collisions

We study the production of scalar and vector leptoquarks in $e^-e^-$ scattering. We use the most general couplings to the known fermions which are dimensionless, baryon and lepton number conserving, and $SU(3)_c \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ invariant. Expressions are presented for production cross sections and predictions are given for future linear colliders.

Bileptons: Present Limits and Future Prospects

We define bileptons to be bosons coupling to a pair of leptons and construct the most general dimension four lagrangian involving scalar and vector bileptons. We concentrate on fields with lepton number 2, and derive model independent bounds on their masses and couplings from low-energy data. In addition, we study their signals in high energy experiments and forecast the discovery potential of future colliders.

Polarization and Weak Mixing Angle in High Energy e^\pm e^- Collisions

At a linear collider of the next generation the large event rates expected from Bhabha and Møller scattering may be used to determine simultaneously sin^2θ_w and the polarization of both beams with very high accuracy. These measurements can be performed in parallel to the other tasks of the linear collider as a free by-product. A high degree of polarization and a good polar angle coverage of the detectors turn out to be major assets.

Light Stops at CDF?

We study the possibility that the production and decay of light stop squarks at Tevatron can mimic top events. We show that this scenario is very unlikely to explain the anomalously high top production cross sections recently reported by the CDF collaboration.

The Resolving Power of a Reaction

We describe a simple method to compute the Cramer-Rao limit of a high energy experiment, i.e., the smallest error with which a parameter can in principle be determined in a reaction. This precision remains a theoretical paradigm since it assumes perfect experimental conditions. Nevertheless, it is shown at hand of an example that for simple processes this asymptotic resolving power can be approached very closely. In all situations, the procedure is at least a useful test of what could and what cannot be measured by studying a particular reaction.

Leptoquark Production in $e^-e^-$ Scattering

We consider the production of scalar and vector leptoquarks in $e^-e^-$ collisions. Although this reaction is not competitive with {\em e.g.} $e^-γ$ scattering for discovering these heavy states, it is the main process susceptible of differentiating two important classes of leptoquarks.

Selectron Searches in $e^-e^-$, $e^-γ$ and $γγ$ Scattering

We review the selectron production mechanisms in the linear collider modes which do not require positrons. The standard model backgrounds can be rendered harmless or even be nearly eliminated with polarized beams. We insist on the complementarity of these different experiments.

Leptoquarks in $e^-γ$ Collisions

We discuss the leptoquark discovery potential of $e^-γ$ scattering and show how polarization and angular distributions can be used to differentiate the different types of leptoquarks.

Physics at an $e^-e^-$ Facility

We review some of the reactions which can be studied in the $e^-e^-$ mode of a linear collider and may reveal aspects of physics beyond the realm of the standard model. The complementarity to $e^+e^-$ scattering is stressed.

Leptoquark Production in Electron-Photon Scattering

We perform a model independent analysis of the production of scalar and vector leptoquarks in the $e^-γ$ mode of a linear collider of the next generation. Since these leptoquarks are produced singly, higher masses can be probed than in other collider modes, like $e^+e^-$ scattering. We discuss the discovery potential and show how polarization and angular distributions can be used to distinguish between the different types of leptoquarks.

Selectron Searches in $e^-e^-$ Scattering

We review the pair-production and decay of selectrons in $e^-e^-$ collisions and show how the standard model backgrounds can be virtually eliminated with polarized beams. The exceedingly simple analysis involved and the large sample of background-free supersymmetric events make this linear collider operating mode ideal for discovering selectrons and measuring the mass of the lightest neutralino.

Measuring Top Quark Electroweak Dipole Moments

We analyze the pair-production of top quarks in polarized $e^+e^-$ scattering in the presence of electroweak dipole moments. For this, we consider two $CP$-odd observables which probe both the real and the imaginary parts of these moments. Polarizing the electron beam turns out to be a main asset.

Slepton Production in Polarized $γγ$ Scattering

We study slepton pair-production in polarized $γγ$ scattering. It turns out that the combined use of polarization and angular correlations greatly enhances the resolving power of this reaction.
