Hilbert Space Black Hole Analog: Unidirectional Transport without Driving

Black holes permit matter to cross their event horizon in only one direction. We show that interacting bosons in optical lattices with asymmetric barrier exhibit an analogous phenomenon, creating unidirectional quantum transport without external driving or dissipation. This directionality emerges purely from many-body interactions, which cause asymmetric projection of the initial state onto transport-enabled or transport-forbidden sectors. The resulting dynamics create an effective one-way boundary in Hilbert space, forming a quantum analog of a black-hole event horizon. Our results establish interactions as a fundamentally new route to directional transport, enabling coherent rectification in atomtronic circuits by the use of intrinsic properties of the system only.

Open Quantum Systems Driven by Chirped Pulses: Quantized versus Semiclassical Fields and the Validity of the Rotating-Wave Approximation

Population transfer via chirped rapid adiabatic passage is studied using open quantum and semiclassical models, with and without the rotating-wave approximation. A time-dependent variational approach based on the multiple-Davydov D$_2$ trial state is employed to simulate the quantum models with an arbitrary finite mean photon number. We examine the accuracy of both the semiclassical field description and the rotating-wave approximation. Robust population transfer is identified over a wide parameter regime controlled by the laser spectral chirp and is found to be insensitive to the spin--phonon coupling strength, Gaussian pulse area, and energy gap of the two-level system.

Higher order Magnus expansions for driven two-level quantum dynamics

We investigate the Magnus expansion for a generic time-dependent two-level system under single-axis driving.By virtue of the su(2) Lie algebra, the expansion is decomposed into a commutator-free form. To illustrate the usefulness of the gained expression, we then revisit the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana model, with a focus on non-adiabatic transitions as well as the Stokes phase. In addition, the semiclassical Rabi model is systematically treated by determining the Floquet quasienergy up to different orders. We demonstrate how to employ suitable picture transformations as well as on how to enforce the symmetry of the underlying model in order to guarantee convergence of the expansion as well as to achieve satisfactory agreement with the exact results. For both models that we studied it turns out that a third order approximation yields results that are in next to perfect agreement with exact analytical ones. Surprisingly, in the case of the semiclassical Rabi model, even the second order Magnus approximation in the adiabatic picture produces almost exact results for a large parameter range.

Quantum Enhancement of Thermalization

Equilibrium properties of many-body systems with a large number of degrees of freedom are generally expected to be described by statistical mechanics. Such expectations are closely tied to the observation of thermalization, as manifested through equipartition in time-dependent observables, which takes place both in quantum and classical systems but may look very different in comparison. By studying the dynamics of individual lattice site populations in ultracold bosonic gases, we show that the process of relaxation toward equilibrium in a quantum system can be orders of magnitude faster than in its classical counterpart. Classical chaos quantifiers reveal that this is due to a wave packet in a quantum system being able to escape regions of inefficient classical transport by a mechanism akin to tunneling. Since the presented phenomenon takes place in a broad parameter range and persists in weakly disordered systems, we expect that it occurs in a variety of many-body systems and is amenable to direct experimental verification in state-of-the-art quantum simulation platforms.

Schrödinger-cat states in Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry: a multiple Davydov Ansatz approach

Employing the time-dependent variational principle combined with the multiple Davydov $\mathrm{D}_2$ Ansatz, we investigate Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions in a qubit coupled to a photon mode with various initial photon states at zero temperature. Thanks to the multiple Davydov trial states, exact photonic dynamics taking place in the course of the LZ transition is also studied efficiently. With the qubit driven by a linear external field and the photon mode initialized with Schrödinger-cat states, asymptotic behavior of the transition probability beyond the rotating-wave approximation is uncovered for a variety of initial states. Using a sinusoidal external driving field, we also explore the photon-assisted dynamics of Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry. Transition pathways involving multiple energy levels are unveiled by analyzing the photon dynamics.

Dynamics of interacting bosons using the Herman-Kluk semiclassical initial value representation

Recent experimental progress using ultracold gases in optical lattices necessitates a quantitative theoretical description for a significant number of bosons. In the present paper, we investigate if time-dependent semiclassical initial value methods, with propagators expressed as integrals over phase space using classical trajectories, is suitable to describe interacting bosons, concentrating on a single mode. Despite the nonlinear contribution from the self-interaction, the corresponding classical dynamics allows for a largely analytical treatment of the semiclassical propagator. We find that the Herman-Kluk (HK) propagator conserves unitarity in the semiclassical limit ($n\to\infty$), but a decay of the norm is seen for low $n$. The frozen Gaussian approximation (FGA, i.e. HK with unit prefactor) is explicitly shown to violate unitarity in the present system for non-vanishing interaction strength, even in the semiclassical limit. Furthermore, we show by evaluating the phase space integral in steepest descent approximation, that the HK propagator reproduces the exact spectrum correctly in the limit $n\to \infty$. An error is, however, incurred in next-to-next-to-leading order (small parameter $1/n$), as seen upon numerical evaluation of the integral or by considering finite $n$ corrections to steepest descent. The FGA, in contrast, is only accurate to lowest order, and an erroneous next-to-leading order term in the energy spectrum was found analytically. Finally, as an example application, we study the dynamics of wave packets by computing the time evolution of the Wigner function. While the often-used truncated Wigner approximation cannot capture any interferences present in the exact quantum mechanical solution (known analytically), we find that the HK approach, despite also using classical information only, reproduces the salient features of the exact solution correctly.

Non-Markovian Dissipative Semiclassical Dynamics

The exact stochastic decomposition of non-Markovian dissipative quantum dynamics is combined with the time-dependent semiclassical initial value formalism. It is shown that even in the challenging regime of moderate friction and low temperatures, where non-Markovian effects are substantial, this approach allows for the accurate description of dissipative dynamics in anharmonic potentials over many oscillation periods until thermalization is reached. The problem of convergence of the stochastic average at long times, which plagues full quantum mechanical implementations, is avoided through a joint sampling of the stochastic noise and the semiclassical phase space distribution.
