Solutions of the focusing nonradial critical wave equation with the compactness property

Consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3, 4 or 5. In a previous paper, we proved that any solution which is bounded in the energy space converges, along a sequence of times and in some weak sense, to a solution with the compactness property, that is a solution whose trajectory stays in a compact subset of the energy space up to space translation and scaling. It is conjectured that the only solutions with the compactness property are stationary solutions and solitary waves that are Lorentz transforms of the former. In this note we prove this conjecture with an additional non-degeneracy assumption related to the invariances of the elliptic equation satisfied by stationary solutions. The proof uses a standard monotonicity formula, modulation theory, and a new channel of energy argument which is independent of the space dimension.

Universality of the blow-up profile for small type II blow-up solutions of energy-critical wave equation: the non-radial case

Following our previous paper in the radial case, we consider blow-up type II solutions to the energy-critical focusing wave equation. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Up to the symmetries of the equation, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up solution is asymptotically a regular solution plus a rescaled Lorentz transform of W concentrating at the origin.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation III: exotic regimes

We consider the blow up problem in the energy space for the critical (gKdV) equation in the continuation of part I and part II. We know from part I that the unique and stable blow up rate for solutions close to the solitons with strong decay on the right is $1/t$. In this paper, we construct non-generic blow up regimes in the energy space by considering initial data with explicit slow decay on the right in space. We obtain finite time blow up solutions with speed $t^{-ν}$ where $ ν>11/13,$ as well as global in time growing up solutions with both exponential growth or power growth. These solutions can be taken with initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state solitary wave.

Scattering for radial, bounded solutions of focusing supercritical wave equations

In this paper, we consider the wave equation in space dimension 3 with an energy-supercritical, focusing nonlinearity. We show that any radial solution of the equation which is bounded in the critical Sobolev space is globally defined and scatters to a linear solution. As a consequence, finite time blow-up solutions have critical Sobolev norm converging to infinity (along some sequence of times). The proof relies on the compactness/rigidity method, pointwise estimates on compact solutions obtained by the two last authors, and channels of energy arguments used by the authors in previous works on the energy-critical equation.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation I: dynamics near the soliton

We fully revisit the near soliton dynamics for the mass critical (gKdV) equation. In Part I, for a class of initial data close to the soliton, we prove that only three scenario can occur: (BLOW UP) the solution blows up in finite time $T$ in a universal regime with speed $1/(T-t)$; (SOLITON) the solution is global and converges to a soliton in large time; (EXIT) the solution leaves any small neighborhood of the modulated family of solitons in the scale invariant $L^2$ norm. Regimes (BLOW UP) and (EXIT) are proved to be stable. We also show in this class that any nonpositive energy initial data (except solitons) yields finite time blow up, thus obtaining the classification of the solitary wave at zero energy. In Part II, we classify minimal mass blow up by proving existence and uniqueness (up to invariances of the equation) of a minimal mass blow up solution $S(t)$. We also completely describe the blow up behavior of $S(t)$. Second, we prove that $S(t)$ is the universal attractor in the (EXIT) case, i.e. any solution as above in the (EXIT) case is close to $S$ (up to invariances) in $L^2$ at the exit time. In particular, assuming scattering for $S(t)$ (in large positive time), we obtain that any solution in the (EXIT) scenario also scatters, thus achieving the description of the near soliton dynamics.

On collapsing ring blow up solutions to the mass supercritical NLS

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_tu+Δu+u|u|^{p-1}=0$ in dimension $N\geq 2$ and in the mass super critical and energy subcritical range $1+\frac 4N<p<\min\{\frac{N+2}{N-2},5\}.$ For initial data $u_0\in H^1$ with radial symmetry, we prove a universal upper bound on the blow up speed. We then prove that this bound is sharp and attained on a family of collapsing ring blow up solutions first formally predicted by Gavish, Fibich and Wang.

Blow up dynamics for smooth equivariant solutions to the energy critical Schrödinger map

We consider the energy critical Schrödinger map problem with the 2-sphere target for equivariant initial data of homotopy index $k=1$. We show the existence of a codimension one set of smooth well localized initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state harmonic map in the energy critical norm, which generates finite time blow up solutions. We give a sharp description of the corresponding singularity formation which occurs by concentration of a universal bubble of energy.

Blow up dynamics for smooth data equivariant solutions to the energy critical Schrodinger map problem

We consider the energy critical Schrodinger map to the 2-sphere for equivariant initial data of homotopy number k=1. We show the existence of a set of smooth initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state harmonic map in the scale invariant norm which generates finite time blow up solutions. We give a sharp description of the corresponding singularity formation which occurs by concentration of a universal bubble of energy. The concentration rate is given by $$λ(t)=κ(u)\frac{T-t}{|\log (T-t)|^2}(1+o(1))$$ for some $κ(u)>0$. The detailed proofs of the results will appear in a companion paper.

The instability of Bourgain-Wang solutions for the L^2 critical NLS

We consider the two dimensional $L^2$ critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\pa_tu+Δu+u|u|^2=0$. In the pioneering work \cite{BW}, Bourgain and Wang have constructed smooth solutions which blow up in finite time $T<+\infty$ with the pseudo conformal speed $$\|\nabla u(t)\|_{L^2}\sim \frac{1}{T-t},$$ and which display some decoupling between the regular and the singular part of the solution at blow up time. We prove that this dynamic is unstable. More precisely, we show that any such solution with small super critical $L^2$ mass lies on the boundary of both $H^1$ open sets of global solutions that scatter forward and backwards in time, and solutions that blow up in finite time on the right in the log-log regime exhibited in \cite{MR1}, \cite{MR4}, \cite{R1}. We moreover exhibit some continuation properties of the scattering solution after blow up time and recover the chaotic phase behavior first exhibited in \cite{Mcpam} in the critical mass case

Maximizers for the Strichartz norm for small solutions of mass-critical NLS

Consider the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in both focusing and defocusing cases for initial data in $L^2$ in space dimension N. By Strichartz inequality, solutions to the corresponding linear problem belong to a global $L^p$ space in the time and space variables, where $p=2+4/N$. In 1D and 2D, the best constant for the Strichartz inequality was computed by D.~Foschi who has also shown that the maximizers are the solutions with Gaussian initial data. Solutions to the nonlinear problem with small initial data in $L^2$ are globally defined and belong to the same global $L^p$ space. In this work we show that the maximum of the $L^p$ norm is attained for a given small mass. In addition, in 1D and 2D, we show that the maximizer is unique and obtain a precise estimate of the maximum. In order to prove this we show that the maximum for the linear problem in 1D and 2D is nondegenerated.

Inelastic interaction of nearly equal solitons for the BBM equation

This paper is concerned with the interaction of two solitons of nearly equal speeds for the (BBM) equation. This work is an extension of the results obtained in arXiv:0910.3204 by the same authors, addressing the same question for the quartic (gKdV) equation. First, we prove that the two solitons are preserved by the interaction and that for all time they are separated by a large distance, as in the case of the integrable (KdV) equation in this regime. Second, we prove that the collision is not perfectly elastic, except in the integrable case (i.e. in the limiting case of the (KdV) equation).

Inelastic interaction of nearly equal solitons for the quartic gKdV equation

This paper presents a complete description of the interaction of two solitons with nearly equal speeds for the quartic (gKdV) equation. By constructing an approximate solution of the problem, we prove that at the main order, the two solitons are preserved by the interaction and that for all time they are separated by a large distance, as in the case of the integrable KdV equation in this regime. However, unlike in the integrable case, we prove that the collision is not perfectly elastic.

Universality of blow-up profile for small radial type II blow-up solutions of energy-critical wave equation

Consider the energy critical focusing wave equation on the Euclidian space. A blow-up type II solution of this equation is a solution which has finite time of existence but stays bounded in the energy space. The aim of this work is to exhibit universal properties of such solutions. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Our main result is that in dimension 3, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up radial solution is essentially the sum of a rescaled W concentrating at the origin and a small remainder which is continuous with respect to the time variable in the energy space. This is coherent with the solutions constructed by Krieger, Schlag and Tataru. One ingredient of our proof is that the unique radial solution which is compact up to scaling is equal to W up to symmetries.

Stable self similar blow up dynamics for slightly L^2 supercritical NLS equations

We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations $i\partial_t u+Δu +u|u|^{p-1}=0$ in dimension $1\leq N\leq 5$ and for slightly $L^2$ supercritical nonlinearities $p_c<p<(1+\e)p_c$ with $p_c=1+\frac{4}{N}$ and $0<\e\ll 1$. We prove the existence and stability in the energy space $H^1$ of a self similar finite time blow up dynamics and provide a qualitative description of the singularity formation near the blow up time

Construction of multi-soliton solutions for the L2-supercritical gKdV and NLS equations

Multi-soliton solutions, i.e. solutions behaving as the sum of N given solitons as $t\to +\infty$, were constructed in previous works for the L2 critical and subcritical (NLS) and (gKdV) equations. In this paper, we extend the construction of multi-soliton solutions to the L2 supercritical case both for (gKdV) and (NLS) equations, using a topological argument to control the direction of instability.

Nondispersive radial solutions to energy supercritical non-linear wave equations, with applications

In this paper we establish optimal pointwise decay estimates for non-dispersive (compact) radial solutions to non-linear wave equations in 3 dimensions, in the energy supercritical range. As an application, we show for the full energy supercritical range, in the defocusing case, that if the scale invariant Sobolev norm of a radial solution remains bounded in its maximal interval of existence, then the solution must exist for all times and scatter.

Scattering norm estimate near the threshold for energy-critical focusing semilinear wave equation

We consider the energy-critical semilinear focusing wave equation in dimension $N=3,4,5$. An explicit solution $W$ of this equation is known. By the work of C. Kenig and F. Merle, any solution of initial condition $(u_0,u_1)$ such that $E(u_0,u_1)<E(W,0)$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}<\|\nabla W\|_{L^2}$ is defined globally and has finite $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm, which implies that it scatters. In this note, we show that the supremum of the $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm taken on all scattering solutions at a certain level of energy below $E(W,0)$ blows-up logarithmically as this level approaches the critical value $E(W,0)$. We also give a similar result in the case of the radial energy-critical focusing semilinear Schrödinger equation. The proofs rely on the compactness argument of C. Kenig and F. Merle, on a classification result, due to the authors, at the energy level $E(W,0)$, and on the analysis of the linearized equation around $W$.
