$\mathrm{PGL}(3)$-invariant integrable systems from factorisation of linear differential and difference operators

In this paper, we present a unified approach to constructing continuous and discrete $\mathrm{PGL}(3)$-invariant integrable systems, formulated in terms of the common dependent variables $z_1,z_2$, from linear spectral problems and their factorisation. Starting from third-order spectral problems, we first provide explicit forms of the differential and difference invariants, generalising the Schwarzian derivative and cross-ratio to the rank-$3$ setting. The factorisation induces dualities among linear spectral problems, underlying the exact discretisation and multi-dimensional consistency of the associated Boussinesq systems. Then, we derive both continuous and discrete $\mathrm{PGL}(3)$-invariant Boussinesq systems, representing natural rank-$3$ generalisations of the Schwarzian KdV and cross-ratio equations. A geometric lifting-decoupling mechanism is developed to explain the reduction of these systems to the $\mathrm{PGL}(2)$-invariant Boussinesq equations. Finally, we derive a ${\mathrm{PGL}}(3)$-invariant system of generating PDEs together with its Lagrangian structure, in which the lattice parameters serve as independent variables, providing the generating PDE system for the Boussinesq hierarchy.

On consistency around a $3 \times 3\times 3$ cube and Q3 analogue of the lattice Boussinesq equation

In this paper, we present two new aspects of lattice Boussinesq (BSQ) equations. First, we show that the lattice potential BSQ (lpBSQ) equation defined on a nine-point square lattice admits a natural extension of three-dimensional consistency to a $3\times 3\times 3$ cube\textemdash a cubic sublattice consisting of $27$ vertices. This extends the standard notion of three-dimensional consistency (defined on an elementary $2\times 2\times 2$ vertex cube for quadrilateral equations) to the non-quadrilateral, nine-point setting. Second, we construct a new three-component system which is referred to as the {\em lattice BSQ-Q3 system}, serving as the BSQ analogue of the Q3($\delta$) equation in the Adler-Bobenko-Suris (ABS) classification. The construction relies on a gauge transformation between Lax pairs of lpBSQ with the parameter $\delta$ arising from a $GL_3$ action. In a degeneration form, the system yields a $PGL_3$-invariant integrable lattice equation that generalises the $PGL_2$-invariant Schwarzian BSQ equation.

Elliptic solutions of the lattice CKP equation and its elliptic direct linearisation scheme

A direct linearisation scheme, based on an elliptic Cauchy kernel, is set up for the lattice CKP equation. This leads to an elliptic parametrisation of the lattice CKP equation, together with its Lax triplet, which allows us to perform appropriate continuum limits and construct elliptic solutions. By selecting appropriate integration measures and domains for the singular linear integral equation in the scheme, elliptic multi-soliton solutions of the lattice CKP equation are found.

The elliptic lattice KdV system revisited

In a previous paper [Nijhoff,Puttock,2003], a 2-parameter extension of the lattice potential KdV equation was derived, associated with an elliptic curve. This comprises a rather complicated 3-component system on the quad lattice which contains the moduli of the elliptic curve as parameters. In the present paper, we investigate this system further and, among other results, we derive a 2-component multiquartic form of the system on the quad lattice. Furthermore, we construct an elliptic Yang-Baxter map, and study the associated continuous and semi-discrete systems. In particular, we derive the so-called ``generating PDE'' for this system, comprising a 6-component system of second order PDEs which could be considered to constitute an elliptic extension of the Ernst equations of General Relativity.

Hyperspherical Trigonometry and Corresponding Elliptic Functions

We develop the basic formulae of hyperspherical trigonometry in multidimensional Euclidean space, using multidimensional vector products, and their conversion to identities for elliptic functions. We show that the basic addition formulae for functions on the 3-sphere embedded in 4-dimensional space lead to addition formulae for elliptic functions, associated with algebraic curves, which have two distinct moduli. We give an application of these formulae to the cases of a multidimensional Euler top, using them to provide a link to the Double Elliptic model.

Lagrangian multiforms on Lie groups and non-commuting flows

We describe a variational framework for non-commuting flows, extending the theories of Lagrangian multiforms and pluri-Lagrangian systems, which have gained prominence in recent years as a variational description of integrable systems in the sense of multidimensional consistency. In the context of non-commuting flows, the manifold of independent variables, often called multi-time, is a Lie group whose bracket structure corresponds to the commutation relations between the vector fields generating the flows. Natural examples are provided by superintegrable systems for the case of Lagrangian 1-form structures, and integrable hierarchies on loop groups in the case of Lagrangian 2-forms. As particular examples we discuss the Kepler problem, the rational Calogero-Moser system, and a generalisation of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur system with non-commuting flows. We view this endeavour as a first step towards a purely variational approach to Lie group actions on manifolds.

Lagrangian multiforms for Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy

We present, for the first time, a Lagrangian multiform for the complete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy -- a single variational object that generates the whole hierarchy and encapsulates its integrability. By performing a reduction on this Lagrangian multiform, we also obtain Lagrangian multiforms for the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy of hierarchies, comprising, amongst others, the Korteweg-de Vries and Boussinesq hierarchies.

On reductions of the discrete Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-type equations

The reduction by restricting the spectral parameters $k$ and $k'$ on a generic algebraic curve of degree $\mathcal{N}$ is performed for the discrete AKP, BKP and CKP equations, respectively. A variety of two-dimensional discrete integrable systems possessing a more general solution structure arise from the reduction, and in each case a unified formula for generic positive integer $\mathcal{N}\geq 2$ is given to express the corresponding reduced integrable lattice equations. The obtained extended two-dimensional lattice models give rise to many important integrable partial difference equations as special degenerations. Some new integrable lattice models such as the discrete Sawada--Kotera, Kaup--Kupershmidt and Hirota--Satsuma equations in extended form are given as examples within the framework.

Direct linearising transform for three-dimensional discrete integrable systems: the lattice AKP, BKP and CKP equations

A unified framework is presented for the solution structure of three-dimensional discrete integrable systems, including the lattice AKP, BKP and CKP equations. This is done through the so-called direct linearising transform which establishes a general class of integral transforms between solutions. As a particular application, novel soliton-type solutions for the lattice CKP equation are obtained.

On elliptic Lax pairs and isomonodromic deformation systems for elliptic lattice equations

In a previous article [N. Delice, F.W. Nijhoff and S. Yoo-Kong, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48(3) (2015), 035206] a novel class of elliptic Lax pairs for integrable lattice equations was introduced. The present article proposes a de-autonomisation of those Lax pairs leading to a class of elliptic discrete isomonodromic deformation problems. We analyse the systems of compatibility conditions using some (possibly novel) higher order elliptic identities.

On an elliptic extension of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation

A generalisation of the Lattice Potential Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (LPKP) equation is presented, using the method of Direct Linearisation based on an elliptic Cauchy kernel. This yields a (3+1)-dimensional lattice system with one of the lattice shifts singled out. The integrability of the lattice system is considered, presenting a Lax representation and soliton solutions. An associated continuous system is also derived, yielding a (3+1)-dimensional generalisation of the potential KP equation associated with an elliptic curve.

Discrete-time Ruijsenaars-Schneider system and Lagrangian 1-form structure

We study the Lagrange formalism of the (rational) Ruijsenaars-Schneider (RS) system, both in discrete time as well as in continuous time, as a further example of a Lagrange 1-form structure in the sense of the recent paper [24]. The discrete-time model of the RS system was established some time ago arising via an Ansatz of a Lax pair, and was shown to lead to an exactly integrable correspondence (multivalued map)[15]. In this paper we consider an extended system representing a family of commuting flows of this type, and establish a connection with the lattice KP system. In the Lagrangian 1-form structure of this extended model, the closure relation is verified making use of the equations of motion. Performing successive continuum limits on the RS system, we establish the Lagrange 1-form structure for the corresponding continuum case of the RS model.

Lattice Schwarzian Boussinesq equation and two-component systems

Various new two-component systems related to the lattice Schwarzian Boussinesq equation are constructed in a systematic way from conservation laws. Their multidimensional consistency is demonstrated, Lax pairs, symmetries and conservation laws are derived and an auto-Backlund transformation is constructed. Finally, Yang-Baxter maps from these systems are constructed.

Symmetries and conservation laws of lattice Boussinesq equations

Sequences of canonical conservation laws and generalized symmetries for the lattice Boussinesq and the lattice modified Boussinesq systems are successively derived. The interpretation of these symmetries as differential-difference equations leads to corresponding hierarchies of such equations for which conservation laws and Lax pairs are constructed. Finally, using the continuous symmetry reduction approach, an integrable, multidimensionally consistent system of partial differential equations is derived in relation with the lattice modified Boussinesq system.

Elliptic (N,N^\prime)-Soliton Solutions of the lattice KP Equation

Elliptic soliton solutions, i.e., a hierarchy of functions based on an elliptic seed solution, are constructed using an elliptic Cauchy kernel, for integrable lattice equations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type. This comprises the lattice KP, modified KP (mKP) and Schwarzian KP (SKP) equations as well as Hirota's bilinear KP equation, and their successive continuum limits. The reduction to the elliptic soliton solutions of KdV type lattice equations is also discussed.

Discrete-time Calogero-Moser system and Lagrangian 1-form structure

We study the Lagrange formalism of the (rational) Calogero-Moser (CM) system, both in discrete time as well as in continuous time, as a first example of a Lagrange 1-form structure in the sense of the recent paper [19]. The discrete-time model of the CM system was established some time ago arising as a pole-reduction of a semi-discrete version of the KP equation, and was shown to lead to an exactly integrable correspondence (multivalued map). In this paper we present the full KP solution based on the commutativity of the discrete-time flows in the two discrete KP variables. The compatibility of the corresponding Lax matrices is shown to lead directly to the relevant closure relation on the level of the Lagrangians. Performing successive continuum limits on both the level of the KP equation as well as of the CM system, we establish the proper Lagrange 1-form structure for the continuum case of the CM model. We use the example of the three-particle case to elucidate the implementation of the novel least-action principle, which was presented in [19], for the simpler case of Lagrange 1-forms.

On the Lagrangian formulation of multidimensionally consistent systems

Multidimensional consistency has emerged as a key integrability property for partial difference equations (P$Δ$Es) defined on the "space-time" lattice. It has led, among other major insights, to a classification of scalar affine-linear quadrilateral P$Δ$Es possessing this property, leading to the so-called ABS list. Recently, a new variational principle has been proposed that describes the multidimensional consistency in terms of discrete Lagrangian multi-forms. This description is based on a fundamental and highly nontrivial property of Lagrangians for those integrable lattice equations, namely the fact that on the solutions of the corresponding P$Δ$E the Lagrange forms are closed, i.e. they obey a {\it closure relation}. Here we extend those results to the continuous case: it is known that associated with the integrable P$Δ$Es there exist systems of PDEs, in fact differential equations with regard to the parameters of the lattice as independent variables, which equally possess the property of multidimensional consistency. In this paper we establish a universal Lagrange structure for affine-linear quad-lattices alongside a universal Lagrange multi-form structure for the corresponding continuous PDEs, and we show that the Lagrange forms possess the closure property.

A constructive approach to the soliton solutions of integrable quadrilateral lattice equations

Scalar multidimensionally consistent quadrilateral lattice equations are studied. We explore a confluence between the superposition principle for solutions related by the Backlund transformation, and the method of solving a Riccati map by exploiting two kn own particular solutions. This leads to an expression for the N-soliton-type solutions of a generic equation within this class. As a particular instance we give an explicit N-soliton solution for the primary model, which is Adler's lattice equation (or Q4).
