Consistent early and late time cosmology from the RG flow of gravity

We investigate the compatibility of cosmological constraints on inflation and the cosmological constant with the asymptotic safety scenario of quantum gravity. The effective action is taken to be of $f(R)$ form, truncated to second order. The flow generated by the Functional Renormalisation Group Equation is analysed and it is found to allow for trajectories that are compatible with the observational constraints on the parameters of the action, both at early and late cosmological times. In particular, the gravitational effective dynamics generated in the trans-Planckian regime flows to Starobinsky inflation at early times and to standard Einstein Gravity with a cosmological constant at late times. Moreover, the cosmological constant acquires an energy dependence at $10^{-2}$ eV, increasing from its current value of $10^{-66} \,\text{eV}^{2}$ on Hubble scale to a value of $10^{30}\, \text{eV}^{2}$ at inflation scale.

Towards reconstructing the quantum effective action of gravity

Starting from a parameterisation of the quantum effective action for gravity we calculate correlation functions for observable quantities. The resulting templates allow to reverse-engineer the couplings describing the effective dynamics from the correlation functions. Applying this new formalism to the autocorrelation function of spatial volume fluctuations measured within the Causal Dynamical Triangulations program suggests that the corresponding quantum effective action consists of the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by a non-local interaction term. We expect that our matching-template formalism can be adapted to a wide range of quantum gravity programs allowing to bridge the gap between the fundamental formulation and observable low-energy physics.

Cosmological bounds on the field content of asymptotically safe gravity-matter models

We use the non-Gaussian fixed points (NGFPs) appearing in the renormalization group flow of gravity and gravity-matter systems to construct models of NGFP-driven inflation via a renormalization group improvement scheme. The cosmological predictions of these models depend sensitively on the characteristic properties of the NGFPs, including their position and stability coefficients, which in turn are determined by the field content of the underlying matter sector. We demonstrate that the NGFPs appearing in gravity-matter systems where the matter content is close to the one of the standard model of particle physics are the ones compatible with cosmological data. Somewhat counterintuitively, the negative fixed point value of the dimensionless cosmological constant is essential for these findings.

Asymptotically safe f(R)-gravity coupled to matter I: the polynomial case

We use the functional renormalization group equation for the effective average action to study the non-Gaussian renormalization group fixed points (NGFPs) arising within the framework of f(R)-gravity minimally coupled to an arbitrary number of scalar, Dirac, and vector fields. Based on this setting we provide comprehensible estimates which gravity-matter systems give rise to NGFPs suitable for rendering the theory asymptotically safe. The analysis employs an exponential split of the metric fluctuations and retains a 7-parameter family of coarse-graining operators allowing the inclusion of non-trivial endomorphisms in the regularization procedure. For vanishing endomorphisms, it is established that gravity coupled to the matter content of the standard model of particle physics and many beyond the standard model extensions exhibit NGFPs whose properties are strikingly similar to the case of pure gravity: there are two UV-relevant directions and the position and critical exponents converge rapidly when higher powers of the scalar curvature are included. Conversely, none of the phenomenologically interesting gravity-matter systems exhibits a stable NGFP when a Type II coarse graining operator is employed. Our analysis resolves this tension by demonstrating that the NGFPs seen in the two settings belong to different universality classes.

Reflection positivity in higher derivative scalar theories

Reflection positivity constitutes an integral prerequisite in the Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction theorem which relates quantum field theories defined on Euclidean space to their Lorentzian signature counterparts. In this work we rigorously prove the violation of reflection positivity in a large class of free scalar fields with a rational propagator. This covers in particular higher-derivative theories where the propagator admits a partial fraction decomposition as well as degenerate cases including e.g. p^4 -type propagators.

On avoiding Ostrogradski instabilities within Asymptotic Safety

We study the renormalization group flow of gravity coupled to scalar matter using functional renormalization group techniques. The novel feature is the inclusion of higher-derivative terms in the scalar propagator. Such terms give rise to Ostrogradski ghosts which signal an instability of the system and are therefore dangerous for the consistency of the theory. Since it is expected that such terms are generated dynamically by the renormalization group flow they provide a potential threat when constructing a theory of quantum gravity based on Asymptotic Safety. Our work then establishes the following picture: upon incorporating higher-derivative terms in the scalar propagator the flow of the gravity-matter system possesses a fixed point structure suitable for Asymptotic Safety. This structure includes an interacting renormalization group fixed point where the Ostrogradski ghosts acquire an infinite mass and decouple from the system. Tracing the flow towards the infrared it is found that there is a subset of complete renormalization group trajectories which lead to stable renormalized propagators. This subset is in one-to-one correspondence to the complete renormalization group trajectories obtained in computations which do not track of the higher-derivative terms. Thus our asymptotically safe gravity-matter systems are not haunted by Ostrogradski ghosts.

Functional Renormalization Group flows on Friedman-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker backgrounds

We reanalyze the construction of the gravitational functional renormalization group equation tailored to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formulation emphasizing its connection to the covariant formulation. The results obtained from projecting the renormalization group flow onto the Einstein-Hilbert action are reviewed in detail and we provide a novel example illustrating how the formalism may be connected to the Causal Dynamical Triangulations approach to quantum gravity.

Renormalization group fixed points of foliated gravity-matter systems

We employ the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism to study the renormalization group flow of gravity minimally coupled to an arbitrary number of scalar, vector, and Dirac fields. The decomposition of the gravitational degrees of freedom into a lapse function, shift vector, and spatial metric equips spacetime with a preferred (Euclidean) "time"-direction. In this work, we provide a detailed derivation of the renormalization group flow of Newton's constant and the cosmological constant on a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. Adding matter fields, it is shown that their contribution to the flow is the same as in the covariant formulation and can be captured by two parameters $d_g$, $d_λ$. We classify the resulting fixed point structure as a function of these parameters finding that the existence of non-Gaussian renormalization group fixed points is rather generic. In particular the matter content of the standard model and its most common extensions gives rise to one non-Gaussian fixed point with real critical exponents suitable for Asymptotic Safety. Moreover, we find non-Gaussian fixed points for any number of scalar matter fields, making the scenario attractive for cosmological model building.

Asymptotically safe cosmology - a status report

Asymptotic Safety, based on a non-Gaussian fixed point of the gravitational renormalization group flow, provides an elegant mechanism for completing the gravitational force at sub-Planckian scales. At high energies the fixed point controls the scaling of couplings such that unphysical divergences are absent while the emergence of classical low-energy physics is linked to a crossover between two renormalization group fixed points. These features make Asymptotic Safety an attractive framework for cosmological model building. The resulting scenarios may naturally give rise to a quantum gravity driven inflationary phase in the very early universe and an almost scale-free fluctuation spectrum. Moreover, effective descriptions arising from an renormalization group improvement permit a direct comparison to cosmological observations as, e.g. Planck data.

Quantum gravity on foliated spacetime - asymptotically safe and sound

Asymptotic Safety provides a mechanism for constructing a consistent and predictive quantum theory of gravity valid on all length scales. Its key ingredient is a non-Gaussian fixed point of the gravitational renormalization group flow which controls the scaling of couplings and correlation functions at high energy. In this work we use a functional renormalization group equation adapted to the ADM-formalism for evaluating the gravitational renormalization group flow on a cosmological Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. Besides possessing the UV-non-Gaussian fixed point characteristic for Asymptotic Safety the setting exhibits a second non-Gaussian fixed point with a positive Newton's constant and real critical exponents. The new fixed point alters the phase diagram in such a way that all renormalization group trajectories connected to classical general relativity are well-defined on all length scales. In particular a positive cosmological constant is dynamically driven to zero in the deep infrared. Moreover, the scaling dimensions associated with the universality classes emerging within the causal setting exhibit qualitative agreement with results found within the $ε$-expansion around two dimensions, Monte Carlo simulations based on Lattice Quantum Gravity, and the discretized Wheeler-deWitt equation.

Quantum Gravity signatures in the Unruh effect

We study quantum gravity signatures emerging from phenomenologically motivated multiscale models, spectral actions, and Causal Set Theory within the detector approach to the Unruh effect. We show that while the Unruh temperature is unaffected, Lorentz-invariant corrections to the two-point function leave a characteristic fingerprint in the induced emission rate of the accelerated detector. Generically, quantum gravity models exhibiting dynamical dimensional reduction exhibit a suppression of the Unruh rate at high energy while the rate is enhanced in Kaluza-Klein theories with compact extra dimensions. We quantify this behavior by introducing the "Unruh dimension" as the effective spacetime dimension seen by the Unruh effect and show that it is related, though not identical, to the spectral dimension used to characterize spacetime in quantum gravity. We comment on the physical origins of these effects and their relevance for black hole evaporation.

The Gravitational Two-Loop Counterterm is Asymptotically Safe

Weinberg's asymptotic safety scenario provides an elegant mechanism to construct a quantum theory of gravity within the framework of quantum field theory based on a non-Gaußian fixed point of the renormalization group flow. In this work we report novel evidence for the validity of this scenario, using functional renormalization group techniques to determine the renormalization group flow of the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by the two-loop counterterm found by Goroff and Sagnotti. The resulting system of beta functions comprises three scale-dependent coupling constants and exhibits a non-Gaußian fixed point which constitutes the natural extension of the one found at the level of the Einstein-Hilbert action. The fixed point exhibits two ultraviolet attractive and one repulsive direction supporting a low-dimensional UV-critical hypersurface. Our result vanquishes the longstanding criticism that asymptotic safety will not survive once a "proper perturbative counterterm" is included in the projection space.

Quantum Phase Transitions in the BKL Universe

We study quantum corrections to the classical Bianchi I and Bianchi IX universes. The modified dynamics is well-motivated from the asymptotic safety program where the short-distance behavior of gravity is governed by a non-trivial renormalization group fixed point. The correction terms induce a phase transition in the dynamics of the model, changing the classical, chaotic Kasner oscillations into a uniform approach to a point singularity. The resulting implications for the microscopic structure of spacetime are discussed.

Covariant computation of effective actions in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We initiate the systematic computation of the heat-kernel coefficients for Laplacian operators obeying anisotropic dispersion relations in curved spacetime. Our results correctly reproduce the limit where isotropy is restored and special anisotropic cases considered previously in the literature. Subsequently, the heat kernel is used to derive the scalar-induced one-loop effective action and beta functions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We identify the Gaussian fixed point which is supposed to provide the UV completion of the theory. In the present setting, this fixed point acts as an infrared attractor for the renormalization group flow of Newton's constant and the high-energy phase of the theory is screened by a Landau pole. We comment on the consequences of these findings for the renormalizability of the theory.

RG flows of Quantum Einstein Gravity in the linear-geometric approximation

We construct a novel Wetterich-type functional renormalization group equation for gravity which encodes the gravitational degrees of freedom in terms of gauge-invariant fluctuation fields. Applying a linear-geometric approximation the structure of the new flow equation is considerably simpler than the standard Quantum Einstein Gravity construction since only transverse-traceless and trace part of the metric fluctuations propagate in loops. The geometric flow reproduces the phase-diagram of the Einstein-Hilbert truncation including the non-Gaussian fixed point essential for Asymptotic Safety. Extending the analysis to the polynomial $f(R)$-approximation establishes that this fixed point comes with similar properties as the one found in metric Quantum Einstein Gravity; in particular it possesses three UV-relevant directions and is stable with respect to deformations of the regulator functions by endomorphisms.

A proper fixed functional for four-dimensional Quantum Einstein Gravity

Realizing a quantum theory for gravity based on Asymptotic Safety hinges on the existence of a non-Gaussian fixed point of the theory's renormalization group flow. In this work, we use the functional renormalization group equation for the effective average action to study the fixed point underlying Quantum Einstein Gravity at the functional level including an infinite number of scale-dependent coupling constants. We formulate a list of guiding principles underlying the construction of a partial differential equation encoding the scale-dependence of $f(R)$-gravity. We show that this equation admits a unique, globally well-defined fixed functional describing the non-Gaussian fixed point at the level of functions of the scalar curvature. This solution is constructed explicitly via a numerical double-shooting method. In the UV, this solution is in good agreement with results from polynomial expansions including a finite number of coupling constants, while it scales proportional to $R^2$, dressed up with non-analytic terms, in the IR. We demonstrate that its structure is mainly governed by the conformal sector of the flow equation. The relation of our work to previous, partial constructions of similar scaling solutions is discussed.

Black holes in Asymptotically Safe Gravity

Black holes are among the most fascinating objects populating our universe. Their characteristic features, encompassing spacetime singularities, event horizons, and black hole thermodynamics, provide a rich testing ground for quantum gravity ideas. In this note we observe that the renormalization group improved Schwarzschild black holes constructed by Bonanno and Reuter within Weinberg's asymptotic safety program constitute a prototypical example of a Hayward geometry used to model non-singular black holes within quantum gravity phenomenology. Moreover, they share many features of a Planck star: their effective geometry naturally incorporates the one-loop corrections found in the effective field theory framework, their Kretschmann scalar is bounded, and the black hole singularity is replaced by a regular de Sitter patch. The role of the cosmological constant in the renormalization group improvement process is briefly discussed.

Spectral dimensions from the spectral action

The generalised spectral dimension $D_{ S}(T)$ provides a powerful tool for comparing different approaches to quantum gravity. In this work, we apply this formalism to the classical spectral actions obtained within the framework of almost-commutative geometry. Analysing the propagation of spin-0, spin-1 and spin-2 fields, we show that a non-trivial spectral dimension arises already at the classical level. The effective field theory interpretation of the spectral action yields plateau-structures interpolating between a fixed spin-independent $D_{ S}(T) = d_S$ for short and $D_{ S}(T) = 4$ for long diffusion times $T$. Going beyond effective field theory the spectral dimension is completely dominated by the high-momentum properties of the spectral action, yielding $D_{ S}(T)=0$ for all spins. Our results support earlier claims that high-energy bosons do not propagate.
