Restricted Boltzmann Machines for Quantum States with Nonabelian or Anyonic Symmetries

Although artificial neural networks have recently been proven to provide a promising new framework for constructing quantum many-body wave functions, the parameterization of a quantum wavefunction with nonabelian symmetries in terms of a Boltzmann machine inherently leads to biased results due to the basis dependence. We demonstrate that this problem can be overcome by sampling in the basis of irreducible representations instead of spins, for which the corresponding ansatz respects the nonabelian symmetries of the system. We apply our methodology to find the ground states of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) model with spin-half and spin-1 degrees of freedom, and obtain a substantially higher accuracy than when using the $s_z$-basis as input to the neural network. The proposed ansatz can target excited states, which is illustrated by calculating the energy gap of the AFH model. We also generalize the framework to the case of anyonic spin chains.

Uncertainty and Trade-offs in Quantum Multiparameter Estimation

Uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics express bounds on our ability to simultaneously obtain knowledge about expectation values of non-commuting observables of a quantum system. They quantify trade-offs in accuracy between complementary pieces of information about the system. In Quantum multiparameter estimation, such trade-offs occur for the precision achievable for different parameters characterizing a density matrix: an uncertainty relation emerges between the achievable variances of the different estimators. This is in contrast to classical multiparameter estimation, where simultaneous optimal precision is attainable in the asymptotic limit. We study trade-off relations that follow from known tight bounds in quantum multiparameter estimation. We compute trade-off curves and surfaces from Cramér--Rao type bounds which provide a compelling graphical representation of the information encoded in such bounds, and argue that bounds on simultaneously achievable precision in quantum multiparameter estimation should be regarded as measurement uncertainty relations. From the state-dependent bounds on the expected cost in parameter estimation, we derive a state independent uncertainty relation between the parameters of a qubit system.

Symmetric cluster expansions with tensor networks

Cluster expansions for the exponential of local operators are constructed using tensor networks. In contrast to other approaches, the cluster expansion does not break any spatial or internal symmetries and exhibits a very favourable prefactor to the error scaling versus bond dimension. This is illustrated by time evolving a matrix product state using very large time steps, and by constructing a novel robust algorithm for finding ground states of 2-dimensional Hamiltonians using projected entangled pair states as fixed points of 2-dimensional transfer matrices.

Entanglement compression in scale space: from the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz to matrix product operators

The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) provides a constructive algorithm for realizing wavefunctions that are inherently scale invariant. Unlike conformally invariant partition functions however, the finite bond dimension $χ$ of the MERA provides a cut-off in the fields that can be realized. In this letter, we demonstrate that this cut-off is equivalent to the one obtained when approximating a thermal state of a critical Hamiltonian with a matrix product operator (MPO) of finite bond dimension $χ$. This is achieved by constructing an explicit mapping between the isometries of a MERA and the local tensors of the MPO.

Tensor-network approach to phase transitions in string-net models

We use a recently proposed class of tensor-network states to study phase transitions in string-net models. These states encode the genuine features of the string-net condensate such as, e.g., a nontrivial perimeter law for Wilson loops expectation values, and a natural order parameter detecting the breakdown of the topological phase. In the presence of a string tension, a quantum phase transition occurs between the topological phase and a trivial phase. We benchmark our approach for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ string nets and capture the second-order phase transition which is well known from the exact mapping onto the transverse-field Ising model. More interestingly, for Fibonacci string nets, we obtain first-order transitions in contrast with previous studies but in qualitative agreement with mean-field results.

A scaling hypothesis for matrix product states

We revisit the question of describing critical spin systems and field theories using matrix product states, and formulate a scaling hypothesis in terms of operators, eigenvalues of the transfer matrix, and lattice spacing in the case of field theories. Critical exponents and central charge are determined by optimizing the exponents such as to obtain a data collapse. We benchmark this method by studying critical Ising and Potts models, where we also obtain a scaling ansatz for the correlation length and entanglement entropy. The formulation of those scaling functions turns out to be crucial for studying critical quantum field theories on the lattice. For the case of $λϕ^4$ with mass $μ^2$ and lattice spacing $a$, we demonstrate a double data collapse for the correlation length $ δξ(μ,λ,D)=\tildeξ \left((α-α_c)(δ/a)^{-1/ν}\right)$ with $D$ the bond dimension, $δ$ the gap between eigenvalues of the transfer matrix, and $α_c=μ_R^2/λ$ the parameter which fixes the critical quantum field theory.

Approaching the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for the classical XY model with tensor networks

We apply variational tensor-network methods for simulating the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in the classical two-dimensional XY model. In particular, using uniform matrix product states (MPS) with non-abelian O(2) symmetry, we compute the universal drop in the spin stiffness at the critical point. In the critical low-temperature regime, we focus on the MPS entanglement spectrum to characterize the Luttinger-liquid phase. In the high-temperature phase, we confirm the exponential divergence of the correlation length and estimate the critical temperature with high precision. Our MPS approach can be used to study generic two-dimensional phase transitions with continuous symmetries.

Cardy states, defect lines and chiral operators of coset CFTs on the lattice

We construct Cardy states, defect lines and chiral operators for rational coset conformal field theories on the lattice. The bulk theory is obtained by taking the overlap between tensor network representations of different string-nets, while the primary fields emerge from using the topological superselection sectors of the anyons in the original topological theory. This mapping provides an explicit manifestation of the equivalence between conformal field theories in two dimensions and topological field theories in three dimensions: their groundstates and elementary excitations are represented by exactly the same tensors.

The Three-Legged Tree Tensor Networks with SU(2)- and molecular point group symmetry

We extend the three-legged tree tensor network state (T3NS) [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2018, 14, 2026-2033] by including spin and the real abelian point group symmetries. T3NS intersperses physical tensors with branching tensors. Physical tensors have one physical index and at most two virtual indices. Branching tensors have up to three virtual indices and no physical index. In this way, T3NS combines the low computational cost of matrix product states and their simplicity for implementing symmetries, with the better entanglement representation of tree tensor networks. By including spin and point group symmetries, more accurate calculations can be obtained with lower computational effort. We illustrate this by presenting calculations on the bis($μ$-oxo) and $μ-η^2:η^2$ peroxo isomers of $[\mathrm{Cu}_2\mathrm{O}_2]^{2+}$. The used implementation is available on github.

Galois conjugated tensor fusion categories and non-unitary CFT

We provide a generalisation of the matrix product operator (MPO) formalism for string-net projected entangled pair states (PEPS) to include non-unitary solutions of the pentagon equation. These states provide the explicit lattice realisation of the Galois conjugated counterparts of (2+1) dimensional TQFTs, based on tensor fusion categories. Although the parent Hamiltonians of these renormalisation group fixed point states are non-Hermitian, many of the topological properties of the states still hold, as a result of the pentagon equation. We show by example that the the topological sectors of the Yang-Lee theory (the non-unitary counterpart of the Fibonacci fusion category) can be constructed even in the absence of closure under Hermitian conjugation of the basis elements of the Ocneanu tube algebra. We argue that this can be generalised to the non-unitary solutions of all $SU(2)$ level $k$ models. The topological sector construction is demonstrated by applying the concept of strange correlators to the Yang-Lee model, giving rise to a non-unitary version of the classical hard hexagon model in the Yang-Lee universality class and obtaining all generalised twisted boundary conditions on a finite cylinder of the Yang-Lee edge singularity.

Tangent-space methods for uniform matrix product states

In these lecture notes we give a technical overview of tangent-space methods for matrix product states in the thermodynamic limit. We introduce the manifold of uniform matrix product states, show how to compute different types of observables, and discuss the concept of a tangent space. We explain how to variationally optimize ground-state approximations, implement real-time evolution and describe elementary excitations for a given model Hamiltonian. Also, we explain how matrix product states approximate fixed points of one-dimensional transfer matrices. We show how all these methods can be translated to the language of continuous matrix product states for one-dimensional field theories. We conclude with some extensions of the tangent-space formalism and with an outlook to new applications.

Thermal States as Convex Combinations of Matrix Product States

We study thermal states of strongly interacting quantum spin chains and prove that those can be represented in terms of convex combinations of matrix product states. Apart from revealing new features of the entanglement structure of Gibbs states our results provide a theoretical justification for the use of White's algorithm of minimally entangled typical thermal states. Furthermore, we shed new light on time dependent matrix product state algorithms which yield hydrodynamical descriptions of the underlying dynamics.

Simulating excitation spectra with projected entangled-pair states

We develop and benchmark a technique for simulating excitation spectra of generic two-dimensional quantum lattice systems using the framework of projected entangled-pair states (PEPS). The technique relies on a variational ansatz for capturing quasiparticle excitations on top of a PEPS ground state. Our method perfectly captures the quasiparticle dispersion relation of the square-lattice transverse-field Ising model, and reproduces the spin-wave velocity and the spin-wave anomaly in the square-lattice Heisenberg model with high precision.

Quasiparticles in quantum spin chains with long-range interactions

We study quasiparticle excitations for quantum spin chains with long-range interactions using variational matrix product state techniques. It is confirmed that the local quasiparticle ansatz is able to capture those excitations very accurately, even when the correlation length becomes very large and in the case of topological nontrivial excitation such as spinons. It is demonstrated that the breaking of the Lieb-Robinson bound follows from the appearance of cusps in the dispersion relation, and evidence is given for a crossover between different quasiparticles as the long-range interactions are tuned.

Residual entropies for three-dimensional frustrated spin systems with tensor networks

We develop a technique for calculating three-dimensional classical partition functions using projected entangled-pair states (PEPS). Our method is based on variational PEPS optimization algorithms for two-dimensional quantum spin systems, and allows us to compute free energies directly in the thermodynamic limit. The main focus of this work is classical frustration in three-dimensional many-body systems leading to an extensive ground-state degeneracy. We provide high-accuracy results for the residual entropy of the dimer model on the cubic lattice, water-ice $I_h$ and water-ice $I_c$. In addition, we show that these systems are in a Coulomb phase by computing the dipolar form of the correlation functions. As a further benchmark of our methods, we calculate the critical temperature and exponents of the Ising model on the cubic lattice.

Global anomaly detection in two-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases

Edge theories of symmetry-protected topological phases are well-known to possess global symmetry anomalies. In this work we focus on two-dimensional bosonic phases protected by an on-site symmetry and analyse the corresponding edge anomalies in more detail. Physical interpretations of the anomaly in terms of an obstruction to orbifolding and constructing symmetry-preserving boundaries are connected to the cohomology classification of symmetry-protected phases in two dimensions. Using the tensor network and matrix product state formalism we numerically illustrate our arguments and discuss computational detection schemes to identify symmetry-protected order in a ground state wave function.

T3NS: three-legged tree tensor network states

We present a new variational tree tensor network state (TTNS) ansatz, the three-legged tree tensor network state (T3NS). Physical tensors are interspersed with branching tensors. Physical tensors have one physical index and at most two virtual indices, as in the matrix product state (MPS) ansatz of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Branching tensors have no physical index, but up to three virtual indices. In this way, advantages of DMRG, in particular a low computational cost and a simple implementation of symmetries, are combined with advantages of TTNS, namely incorporating more entanglement. Our code is capable of simulating quantum chemical Hamiltonians, and we present several proof-of-principle calculations on LiF, N$_2$ and the bis($μ$-oxo) and $μ- η^2 : η^2$ peroxo isomers of $[\mathrm{Cu}_2\mathrm{O}_2]^{2+}$.
