Lagrangian multiform structure of discrete and semi-discrete KP systems

A variational structure for the potential AKP system is established using the novel formalism of a Lagrangian multiforms. The structure comprises not only the fully discrete equation on the 3D lattice, but also its semi-discrete variants including several differential-difference equations asssociated with, and compatible with, the partial difference equation. To this end, an overview is given of the various (discrete and semi-discrete) variants of the KP system, and their associated Lax representations, including a novel `generating PDE' for the KP hierarchy. The exterior derivative of the Lagrangian 3-form for the lattice potential KP equation is shown to exhibit a double-zero structure, which implies the corresponding generalised Euler-Lagrange equations. Alongside the 3-form structures, we develop a variational formulation of the corresponding Lax systems via the square eigenfunction representation arising from the relevant direct linearization scheme.

The Darboux-KP system as an integrable Chern-Simons multiform theory in infinite dimensional space

In a previous paper by one of the authors, a Lagrangian 3-form structure was established for a generalised Darboux system, originally describing orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems, which encodes the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy. Here a hierarchy of Lagrangian multiforms is established for the same system, viewed as a hierarchy of Chern-Simons actions in an infinite-dimensional space of Miwa variables, constituting the variational form of a universal 3D integrable system embedded in this infinite-dimensional space.

Lagrangian 3-form structure for the Darboux system and the KP hierarchy

A Lagrangian multiform structure is established for a generalisation of the Darboux system describing orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems. It has been shown in the past that this system of coupled PDEs is in fact an encoding of the entire Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy in terms so-called Miwa variables. Thus, in providing a Lagrangian description of this multidimensionally consistent system amounts to a new Lagrangian 3-form structure for the continuous KP system. A generalisation to the matrix (also known as non-Abelian) KP system is discussed.

Integrable symplectic maps associated with discrete Korteweg-de Vries-type equations

In this paper we present novel integrable symplectic maps, associated with ordinary difference equations, and show how they determine, in a remarkably diverse manner, the integrability, including Lax pairs and the explicit solutions, for integrable partial difference equations which are the discrete counterparts of integrable partial differential equations of Korteweg-de Vries-type (KdV-type). As a consequence it is demonstrated that several distinct Hamiltonian systems lead to one and the same difference equation by means of the Liouville integrability framework. Thus, these integrable symplectic maps may provide an efficient tool for characterizing, and determining the integrability of, partial difference equations.

Algebro-geometric integration of the Q1 lattice equation via nonlinear integrable symplectic maps

The Q1 lattice equation, a member in the Adler-Bobenko-Suris list of 3D consistent lattices, is investigated. By using the multidimensional consistency, a novel Lax pair for Q1 equation is given, which can be nonlinearised to produce integrable symplectic maps. Consequently, a Riemann theta function expression for the discrete potential is derived with the help of the Baker-Akhiezer functions. This expression leads to the algebro-geometric integration of the Q1 lattice equation, based on the commutativity of discrete phase flows generated from the iteration of integrable symplectic maps.

Elliptic solutions of Boussinesq type lattice equations and the elliptic Nth root of unity

We establish an infinite family of solutions in terms of elliptic functions of the lattice Boussinesq systems by setting up a direct linearisation scheme, which provides the solution structure for those equations in the elliptic case. The latter, which contains as main structural element a Cauchy kernel on the torus, is obtained from a dimensional reduction of the elliptic direct linearisation scheme of the lattice Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, which requires the introduction of a novel technical concept, namely the "elliptic cube root of unity". Thus, in order to implement the reduction we define, more generally, the notion of {\em elliptic $N^{\rm th}$ root of unity}, and discuss some of its properties in connection with a special class of elliptic addition formulae. As a particular concrete application we present the class of elliptic $N$-soliton solutions of the lattice Boussinesq systems.

Closed-form modified Hamiltonians for integrable numerical integration schemes

Modified Hamiltonians are used in the field of geometric numerical integration to show that symplectic schemes for Hamiltonian systems are accurate over long times. For nonlinear systems the series defining the modified Hamiltonian usually diverges. In contrast, this paper constructs and analyzes explicit examples of nonlinear systems where the modified Hamiltonian has a closed-form expression and hence converges. These systems arise from the theory of discrete integrable systems. We present cases of one- and two-degrees symplectic mappings arising as reductions of nonlinear integrable lattice equations, for which the modified Hamiltonians can be computed in closed form. These modified Hamiltonians are also given as power series in the time step by Yoshida's method based on the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series. Another example displays an implicit dependence on the time step which could be of relevance to certain implicit schemes in numerical analysis. In the light of these examples, the potential importance of integrable mappings to the field of geometric numerical integration is discussed.

Direct Linearization of extended lattice BSQ systems

The direct linearization structure is presented of a "mild" but significant generalization of the lattice BSQ system. Some of the equations in this system were recently discovered in [J. Hietarinta, J. Phys {\bf A}: Math. Theor. {\bf 44} (2011) 165204] through a search of a class of three-component systems obeying the property of multidimensional consistency. We show that all the novel equations arising in this class follow from one and the same underlying structure. Lax pairs for these systems are derived and explicit expressions for the $N$-soliton solutions are obtained from the given structure.

A higher-rank version of the Q3 equation

A lattice system is derived which amounts to a higher-rank analogue of the Q3 equation, the latter being an integrable partial difference equation which has appeared in the ABS list of multidimensionally consistent quadrilateral lattice equations. By construction this new system incorporates various lattice equations of Boussinesq type that were discovered many years ago. A corresponding Lax representation is derived.

Elliptic Solutions of ABS Lattice Equations

Elliptic N-soliton-type solutions, i.e. solutions emerging from the application of N consecutive Bäcklund transformations to an elliptic seed solution, are constructed for all equations in the ABS list of quadrilateral lattice equations, except for the case of the Q4 equation which is treated elsewhere. The main construction, which is based on an elliptic Cauchy matrix, is performed for the equation Q3, and by coalescence on certain auxiliary parameters, the corresponding solutions of the remaining equations in the list are obtained. Furthermore, the underlying linear structure of the equations is exhibited, leading, in particular, to a novel Lax representation of the Q3 equation.
