New Methods for Constructing Classical and Quantum Codes from Graphs and Matroids

In this paper, we present a method for constructing linear codes derived from book graphs. Applying such a method, we construct binary codes that have the greatest possible minimum distance for their length and dimension by means of the $2$-sum of two equal book graphs. We then utilize matroid and graph theory together to investigate some properties of the resulting linear codes. Furthermore, we show that, from the incidence matrix of any graph, we can obtain a linear code over any finite field maintaining the same parameters. Furthermore, we show how the condition for two linear codes to generate a Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) code translates into matroid theory and, utilizing cycle graphs, we exhibit a way to generate codes that meet this condition.

Expressivity Limits in Quantum Walk-based Optimization

Quantum algorithms have emerged as a promising tool to solve combinatorial optimization problems. The quantum walk optimization algorithm (QWOA) is one such variational approach that has recently gained attention. In the broader context of variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), understanding the expressivity of the ansatz has proven critical for evaluating their performance. A key method to study this aspect involves analyzing the dimension of the dynamic Lie algebra (DLA). In this work, we derive novel upper bounds on the DLA dimension for QWOA applied to arbitrary optimization problems. Specifically, we show that the DLA dimension scales at most quadratically with the number of distinct eigenvalues of the problem Hamiltonian. As a consequence, our bound guarantees a polynomial DLA dimension with respect to the input size for optimization problems in the class $\mathsf{NPO}\text{-}\mathsf{PB}$. This result, coupled with recently established performance bounds for QWOA, allows us to identify complexity-theoretic conditions under which QWOA must be overparameterized to obtain optimal or approximate solutions for $\mathsf{NPO}\text{-}\mathsf{PB}$ problems.

Impact of Bivariate Gaussian Potentials on Quantum Walks for Spatial Search

Quantum search algorithms are crucial for exploring large solution spaces, but their robustness to environmental perturbations, such as noise or disorder, remains a critical challenge. We examine the impact of biased disorder potentials modeled by a bivariate Gaussian distribution function on the dynamics of quantum walks in spatial search problems. Building on the Ambainis-Kempe-Rivosh (AKR) model for searching on a two-dimensional grid, we incorporate potential fields to investigate how changes in standard deviation and normalization of the bivariate Gaussian function impact the performance of the search algorithm. Our results show that the quantum walk closely mirrors the AKR algorithm when the standard deviation is small but exhibits a rapid decay in success probability as the standard deviation increases. This behavior demonstrates how the bivariate Gaussian can effectively model a noisy oracle within the AKR algorithm. Additionally, we compare the AKR-based model with an alternative quantum walk model using a Hadamard coin and standard shift. These findings contribute to understanding the robustness of quantum walk search algorithms, and provide insights into how quantum walks can be applied to optimization algorithms.
