Off-centered immobile magnetic vortex under influence of spin-transfer torque

Equilibrium magnetization distribution of the vortex state magnetic nanoparticle is affected by the influence of the spin-transfer torque: an off-center out--of--plane vortex appears in the case of the disk shape particle and pure planar vortex in the case of asymmetric ring shape particle. The spin current causes extra out-of-plane magnetization structures identical to well known dip structures for the moving vortex. The shape of the dip structure depends on the current strength and value of the off-center displacement and it does not depend on the vortex polarity. The critical current depends on the nanodot thickness.

Multiple vortex-antivortex pair generation in magnetic nanodots

The interaction of a magnetic vortex with a rotating magnetic field causes the nucleation of a vortex--antivortex pair leading to a vortex polarity switching. The key point of this process is the creation of a dip, which can be interpreted as a nonlinear resonance in the system of certain magnon modes with nonlinear coupling. The usually observed single-dip structure is a particular case of a multidip structure. The dynamics of the structure with $n$ dips is described as the dynamics of nonlinearly coupled modes with azimuthal numbers $m=0,\pm n,\pm 2n$. The multidip structure with arbitrary number of vortex antivortex pairs can be obtained in vortex-state nanodisk using a space- and time-varying magnetic field. A scheme of a possible experimental setup for multidip structure generation is proposed.

Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Spatio-Temporal Perturbations

We investigate the dynamics of solitons of the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) with the following perturbations: non-parametric spatio-temporal driving of the form $f(x,t) = a \exp[i K(t) x]$, damping, and a linear term which serves to stabilize the driven soliton. Using the time evolution of norm, momentum and energy, or, alternatively, a Lagrangian approach, we develop a Collective-Coordinate-Theory which yields a set of ODEs for our four collective coordinates. These ODEs are solved analytically and numerically for the case of a constant, spatially periodic force $f(x)$. The soliton position exhibits oscillations around a mean trajectory with constant velocity. This means that the soliton performs, on the average, a unidirectional motion although the spatial average of the force vanishes. The amplitude of the oscillations is much smaller than the period of $f(x)$. In order to find out for which regions the above solutions are stable, we calculate the time evolution of the soliton momentum $P(t)$ and soliton velocity $V(t)$: This is a parameter representation of a curve $P(V)$ which is visited by the soliton while time evolves. Our conjecture is that the soliton becomes unstable, if this curve has a branch with negative slope. This conjecture is fully confirmed by our simulations for the perturbed NLSE. Moreover, this curve also yields a good estimate for the soliton lifetime: the soliton lives longer, the shorter the branch with negative slope is.

Switching phenomena in magnetic vortex dynamics

A magnetic nanoparticle in a vortex state is a promising candidate for the information storage. One bit of information corresponds to the upward or downward magnetization of the vortex core (vortex polarity). Generic properties of the vortex polarity switching are insensitive of the way how the vortex dynamics was excited: by an AC magnetic field, or by an electrical current. We study theoretically the switching process and describe in detail its mechanism, which involves the creation and annihilation of an intermediate vortex-antivortex pair.

Controllable switching of vortex chirality in magnetic nanodisks by a field pulse

We propose a way of fast switching the chirality in a magnetic nanodisk by applying a field pulse. To break the symmetry with respect to clockwise or counterclockwise chirality a mask is added by which an inhomogeneous field influences the vortex state of a nanodisk. Using numerical spin--lattice simulations we demonstrate that chirality can be controllably switched by a field pulse, whose intensity is above some critical value. A mathematical definition for the chirality of an arbitrary shaped particle is proposed.

Switching of the vortex polarity in a magnetic nanodisk by a DC current

We study the dynamics of a vortex state nanodisk due to a dc spin current, perpendicular to the disk plane. The irreversible switching of the vortex polarity takes place above some threshold current. The detailed description of these processes is obtained by spin-lattice simulations.

Effective anisotropy of thin nanomagnets: beyond the surface anisotropy approach

We study the effective anisotropy induced in thin nanomagnets by the nonlocal demagnetization field (dipole-dipole interaction). Assuming a magnetization independent of the thickness coordinate, we reduce the energy to an inhomogeneneous onsite anisotropy. Vortex solutions exist and are ground states for this model. We illustrate our approach for a disk and a square geometry. In particular, we obtain good agreement between spin-lattice simulations with this effective anisotropy and micromagnetic simulations.

Quantum effects for the 2D soliton in isotropic ferromagnets

We evaluate a zero-point quantum correction to a Belavin-Polyakov soliton in an isotropic 2D ferromagnet. By revising the scattering problem of quasi-particles by a soliton we show that it leads to the Aharonov-Bohm type of scattering, hence the scattering data can not be obtained by the Born approximation. We proof that the soliton energy with account of quantum corrections does not have a minimum as a function of its radius, which is usually interpreted as a soliton instability. On the other hand, we show that long lifetime solitons can exist in ferromagnets due to an additional integral of motion, which is absent for the sigma-model.

Vortex polarity switching by a spin--polarized current

The spin-transfer effect is investigated for the vortex state of a magnetic nanodot. A spin current is shown to act similarly to an effective magnetic field perpendicular to the nanodot. Then a vortex with magnetization (polarity) parallel to the current polarization is energetically favorable. Following a simple energy analysis and using direct spin--lattice simulations, we predict the polarity switching of a vortex. For magnetic storage devices, an electric current is more effective to switch the polarity of a vortex in a nanodot than the magnetic field.

Levinson theorem for Aharonov-Bohm scattering in two dimensions

We apply the recently generalized Levinson theorem for potentials with inverse square singularities [Sheka et al, Phys.Rev.A, v.68, 012707 (2003)] to Aharonov-Bohm systems in two-dimensions. By this theorem, the number of bound states in a given m-th partial wave is related to the phase shift and the magnetic flux. The results are applied to 2D soliton-magnon scattering.

Reply to Comment on "Existence of Internal Modes of sine-Gordon Kinks"

In this reply to the comment by C. R. Willis, we show, by quoting his own statements, that the simulations reported in his original work with Boesch [Phys. Rev. B 42, 2290 (1990)] were done for kinks with nonzero initial velocity, in contrast to what Willis claims in his comment. We further show that his alleged proof, which assumes among other approximations that kinks are initially at rest, is not rigorous but an approximation. Moreover, there are other serious misconceptions which we discuss in our reply. As a consequence, our result that quasimodes do not exist in the sG equation [Phys. Rev. E 62, R60 (2000)] remains true.

Dynamics of topological solitons in two-dimensional ferromagnets

Dynamical topological solitons are studied in classical two-dimensional Heisenberg easy-axis ferromagnets. The properties of such solitons are treated both analytically in the continuum limit and numerically by spin dynamics simulations of the discrete system. Excitation of internal mode causes orbital motion. This is confirmed by simulations.

Soliton ratchets in homogeneous nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems

We study in detail the ratchet-like dynamics of topological solitons in homogeneous nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems driven by a bi-harmonic force. By using a collective coordinate approach with two degrees of freedom, namely the center of the soliton, $X(t)$, and its width, $l(t)$, we show, first, that energy is inhomogeneously pumped into the system, generating as result a directed motion; and, second, that the breaking of the time shift symmetry gives rise to a resonance mechanism that takes place whenever the width $l(t)$ oscillates with at least one frequency of the external ac force. In addition, we show that for the appearance of soliton ratchets, it is also necesary to break the time-reversal symmetry. We analyze in detail the effects of dissipation in the system, calculating the average velocity of the soliton as a function of the ac force and the damping. We find current reversal phenomena depending on the parameter choice and discuss the important role played by the phases of the ac force. Our analytical calculations are confirmed by numerical simulations of the full partial differential equations of the sine-Gordon and $ϕ^4$ systems, which are seen to exhibit the same qualitative behavior. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental work on dissipation induced symmetry breaking.

Inhomogeneous soliton ratchets under two ac forces

We extend our previous work on soliton ratchet devices [L. Morales-Molina et al., Eur. Phys. J. B 37, 79 (2004)] to consider the joint effect of two ac forces including non-harmonic drivings, as proposed for particle ratchets by Savele'v et al. [Europhys. Lett. 67}, 179 (2004); Phys. Rev. E {\bf 70} 066109 (2004)]. Current reversals due to the interplay between the phases, frequencies and amplitudes of the harmonics are obtained. An analysis of the effect of the damping coefficient on the dynamics is presented. We show that solitons give rise to non-trivial differences in the phenomenology reported for particle systems that arise from their extended character. A comparison with soliton ratchets in homogeneous systems with biharmonic forces is also presented. This ratchet device may be an ideal candidate for Josephson junction ratchets with intrinsic large damping.

Vortex motion in a finite-size easy-plane ferromagnet and application to a nanodot

We study the motion of a non-planar vortex in a circular easy-plane ferromagnet, which imitates a magnetic nanodot. Analysis was done using numerical simulations and a new collective variable theory which includes the coupling of Goldstone-like mode with the vortex center. Without magnetic field the vortex follows a spiral orbit which we calculate. When a rotating in-plane magnetic field is included, the vortex tends to a stable limit cycle which exists in a significant range of field amplitude B and frequency $ω$ for a given system size L. For a fixed $ω$, the radius R of the orbital motion is proportional to L while the orbital frequency $Ω$ varies as 1/L and is significantly smaller than $ω$. Since the limit cycle is caused by the interplay between the magnetization and the vortex motion, the internal mode is essential in the collective variable theory which then gives the correct estimate and dependency for the orbit radius $R\sim B L/ω$. Using this simple theory we indicate how an ac magnetic field can be used to control vortices observed in real magnetic nanodots.

Ratchet behavior in nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems with point-like inhomogeneities

We investigate the ratchet dynamics of nonlinear Klein-Gordon kinks in a periodic, asymmetric lattice of point-like inhomogeneities. We explain the underlying rectification mechanism within a collective coordinate framework, which shows that such system behaves as a rocking ratchet for point particles. Careful attention is given to the kink width dynamics and its role in the transport. We also analyze the robustness of our kink rocking ratchet in the presence of noise. We show that the noise activates unidirectional motion in a parameter range where such motion is not observed in the noiseless case. This is subsequently corroborated by the collective variable theory. An explanation for this new phenomenom is given.

Ratchets in homogeneous extended systems: internal modes and the role of noise

We revisit the issue of directed motion induced by zero average forces in extended systems driven by ac forces. It has been shown recently that a directed energy current appears if the ac external force, $f(t)$, breaks the symmetry $f(t) = - f(t+T/2)$, $T$ being the period, if topological solitons (kinks) existed in the system. In this work, a collective coordinate approach allows us to identify the mechanism through which the width oscillation drives the kink and its relation with the mathematical symmetry conditions. Furthermore, our theory predicts, and numerical simulations confirm, that the direction of motion depends on the initial phase of the driving, while the system behaves in a ratchet-like fashion if averaging over initial conditions. Finally, the presence of noise overimposed to the ac driving does not destroy the directed motion; on the contrary, it gives rise to an activation process that increases the velocity of the motion. We conjecture that this could be a signature of resonant phenomena at larger noises.
