Natural annihilators and operators of constant rank over $\mathbb{C}$

Even if the Fourier symbols of two constant rank differential operators have the same nullspace for each non-trivial phase space variable, the nullspaces of those differential operators might differ by an infinite dimensional space. Under the natural condition of constant rank over $\mathbb{C}$, we establish that the equality of nullspaces on the Fourier symbol level already implies the equality of the nullspaces of the differential operators in $\mathscr{D}'$ modulo polynomials of a fixed degree. In particular, this condition allows to speak of natural annihilators within the framework of complexes of differential operators. As an application, we establish a Poincaré-type lemma for differential operators of constant complex rank in two dimensions.

On symmetric div-quasiconvex hulls and divsym-free $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-truncations

We establish that for any non-empty, compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}_{\mathrm{sym}}^{3\times 3}$ the $1$- and $\infty$-symmetric div-quasiconvex hulls $K^{(1)}$ and $K^{(\infty)}$ coincide. This settles a conjecture in a recent work of Conti, Müller and Ortiz (Symmetric Div-Quasiconvexity and the Relaxation of Static Problems. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 235(2):841-880) in the affirmative. As a key novelty, we construct an $\mathrm{L}^{\infty}$-truncation that preserves both symmetry and solenoidality of matrix-valued maps in $\mathrm{L}^{1}$.

Sharp trace and Korn inequalities for differential operators

We establish sharp trace- and Korn-type inequalities that involve vectorial differential operators, the focus being on situations where global singular integral estimates are not available. Starting from a novel approach to sharp Besov boundary traces by Riesz potentials and oscillations that equally applies to $p=1$, a case difficult to be handled by harmonic analysis techniques, we then classify boundary trace- and Korn-type inequalities. For $p=1$ and so despite the failure of the Calderón-Zygmund theory, we prove that sharp trace estimates can be systematically reduced to full $k$-th order gradient estimates. Moreover, for $1<p<\infty$, where sharp trace- yield Korn-type inequalities on smooth domains, we show for the basically optimal class of John domains that Korn-type inequalities persist -- even though the reduction to global Calderón-Zygmund estimates by extension operators might not be possible.

On Korn-Maxwell-Sobolev Inequalities

We establish a family of inequalities that allow one to estimate the $\mathrm{L}^{q}$-norm of a matrix-valued field by the $\mathrm{L}^{q}$-norm of an elliptic part and the $\mathrm{L}^{p}$-norm of the matrix-valued curl. This particularly extends previous work by Neff et al. and, as a main novelty, is applicable in the regime $p=1$.

Partial regularity for symmetric quasiconvex functionals on BD

We establish the first partial regularity results for (strongly) symmetric quasiconvex functionals of linear growth on BD, the space of functions of bounded deformation. By Rindler's foundational work (Lower semicontinuity for integral functionals in the space of functions of bounded deformation via rigidity and Young measures, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 202 (2011), no. 1, 63-113), symmetric quasiconvexity is the foremost notion as to sequential weak*-lower semicontinuity of functionals on BD. The overarching main difficulty here is Ornstein's Non-Inequality, implying that the BD-case is genuinely different from the study of variational integrals on BV. In particular, this paper extends the recent work of Kristensen and the author (Partial regularity for BV-Minimizers, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 232 (2019), Issue 3, 1429-1473) from the BV- to the BD-situation. Alongside, we establish partial regularity results for strongly quasiconvex functionals of superlinear growth by reduction to the full gradient case, which might be of independent interest.

$\mathscr{A}$-Quasiconvexity and Partial Regularity

We establish the first partial regularity result for local minima of strongly $\mathscr{A}$-quasiconvex integrals in the case where the differential operator $\mathscr{A}$ possesses an elliptic potential $\mathbb{A}$. As the main ingredient, the proof works by reduction to the partial regularity for full gradient functionals. Specialising to particular differential operators, the results in this paper thereby equally yield novel partial regularity theorems in the cases of the trace-free symmetric gradient, the exterior derivative or the div-curl-operator.

Embeddings for $\mathbb{A}$-weakly differentiable functions on domains

We prove that the critical embedding $\mathrm{W}^{\mathbb{A},1}(B)\hookrightarrow \mathrm{W}^{k-1,\frac{n}{n-1}}$ holds if and only if the $k$-homogeneous, linear differential operator $\mathbb{A}$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ from $\mathbb{R}^N$ to $\mathbb{R}^m$ has finite dimensional null-space. Here $B$ is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathrm{W}^{\mathbb{A},1}(B)$ denotes the space of maps $u\in \mathrm{L}^1(B,\mathbb{R}^N)$ such that the vector valued distribution $\mathbb{A}u$ is an integrable map. The result was previously known only for several examples of $\mathbb{A}$. Our result contrasts the homogeneous embedding in full-space. Namely, Van Schaftingen proved that $\dot{\mathrm{W}}{^{\mathbb{A},1}}(\mathbb{R}^n)\hookrightarrow \dot{\mathrm{W}}{^{k-1,\frac{n}{n-1}}}$ if and only if $\mathbb{A}$ is elliptic and cancelling. We show that this condition is (strictly) implied by $\mathbb{A}$ having finite dimensional null-space.

The Lipschitz truncation of functions of bounded variation

We construct a Lipschitz truncation which approximates functions of bounded variation in the area-strict metric. The Lipschitz truncation changes the original function only on a small set similar to Lusin's theorem. Previous results could only give estimates on the Lebesgue measure of the set where the Lipschitz approximations differ from the original function.

Regularity for the Dirichlet problem on BD

We establish that the Dirichlet problem for convex linear growth functionals on $BD$, the functions of bounded deformation, gives rise to the same unconditional Sobolev and partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity theory as presently available for the full gradient Dirichlet problem on $BV$. By Ornstein's Non-Inequality, $BV$ is a proper subspace of $BD$, and full gradient techniques known from the $BV$-situation do not apply here. In particular, applying to all generalised minima (i.e., minima of a suitably relaxed problem) despite their non-uniqueness and reaching the ellipticity ranges known from the $BV$-case, this paper extends previous results by Kristensen and the author (Gmeineder, F.; Kristensen, J.: Sobolev regularity for convex functionals on BD. J. Calc. Var. (2019) 58:56) in an optimal way.

On a Neumann problem for variational functionals of linear growth

We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the borderline case of the minimal surface functional, whereas for the Neumann problem no such quantified version of strong convexity is required.

On limiting trace inequalities for vectorial differential operators

We establish that trace inequalities $$\|D^{k-1}u\|_{L^{\frac{n-s}{n-1}}(\mathbb{R}^{n},dμ)} \leq c \|μ\|_{L^{1,n-s}(\mathbb{R}^{n})}^{\frac{n-1}{n-s}}\|\mathbb{A}[D]u\|_{L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n},d\mathscr{L}^{n})}$$ hold for vector fields $u\in C^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{n};\mathbb{R}^{N})$ if and only if the $k$-th order homogeneous linear differential operator $\mathbb{A}[D]$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ is elliptic and cancelling, provided that $s<1$, and give partial results for $s=1$, where stronger conditions on $\mathbb{A}[D]$ are necessary. Here, $\|μ\|_{L^{1,λ}}$ denotes the $(1,λ)$-Morrey norm of the measure $μ$, so that such traces can be taken, for example, with respect to the Hausdorff measure $\mathscr{H}^{n-s}$ restricted to fractals of codimension $0<s<1$. The above class of inequalities give a systematic generalisation of Adams' trace inequalities to the limit case $p=1$ and can be used to prove trace embeddings for functions of bounded $\mathbb{A}$-variation, thereby comprising Sobolev functions and functions of bounded variation or deformation. We moreover establish a multiplicative version of the above inequality, which implies ($\mathbb{A}$-)strict continuity of the associated trace operators on $\text{BV}^{\mathbb{A}}$.

Regularity for higher order quasiconvex problems with linear growth from below

We announce new existence and $\varepsilon$-regularity results for minimisers of the relaxation of strongly quasiconvex integrals that on smooth maps $u\colonΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}\to\mathbb{R}^{N}$ are defined by $$u\mapsto \int_ΩF(\nabla^{k}u)dx.$$ The results cover the case of integrands $F$ with $(1,q)$-growth in the full range of exponents $1<q<\frac{n}{n-1}$ for which a measure representation of the relaxed functional is possible and the minimizers belong to the space $BV^k$ of maps whose $k$-th order derivatives are measures.

On the Trace Operator for Functions of Bounded $\mathbb{A}$-Variation

In this paper, we consider the space $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$ of functions of bounded $\mathbb A$-variation. For a given first order linear homogeneous differential operator with constant coefficients $\mathbb A$, this is the space of $L^1$--functions $u:Ω\rightarrow\mathbb R^N$ such that the distributional differential expression $\mathbb A u$ is a finite (vectorial) Radon measure. We show that for Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n}$, $\mathrm{BV}^{\mathbb A}(Ω)$-functions have an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace if and only if $\mathbb A$ is $\mathbb C$-elliptic (or, equivalently, if the kernel of $\mathbb A$ is finite dimensional). The existence of an $L^1(\partialΩ)$-trace was previously only known for the special cases that $\mathbb A u$ coincides either with the full or the symmetric gradient of the function $u$ (and hence covered the special cases $\mathrm{BV}$ or $\mathrm{BD}$). As a main novelty, we do not use the fundamental theorem of calculus to construct the trace operator (an approach which is only available in the $\mathrm{BV}$- and $\mathrm{BD}$-setting) but rather compare projections onto the nullspace as we approach the boundary. As a sample application, we study the Dirichlet problem for quasiconvex variational functionals with linear growth depending on $\mathbb A u$.

Electro-rheological fluids under random influences: martingale and strong solutions

We study generalised Navier--Stokes equations governing the motion of an electro-rheological fluid subject to stochastic perturbation. Stochastic effects are implemented through (i) random initial data, (ii) a forcing term in the momentum equation represented by a multiplicative white noise and (iii) a random character of the variable exponent $p=p(ω,t,x)$ (as a result of a random electric field). We show the existence of a weak martingale solution provided the variable exponent satisfies $p\geq p^->\frac{3n}{n+2}$ ($p^->1$ in two dimensions). Under additional assumptions we obtain also pathwise solutions.

Partial Regularity for BV Minimizers

We establish an $\varepsilon$-regularity result for the derivative of a map of bounded variation that minimizes a strongly quasiconvex variational integral of linear growth, and, as a consequence, the partial regularity of such BV minimizers. This result extends the regularity theory for minimizers of quasiconvex integrals on Sobolev spaces to the context of maps of bounded variation. Previous partial regularity results for BV minimizers in the linear growth set-up were confined to the convex situation.

Sobolev regularity for Convex Functionals on BD

We study Sobolev regularity results for minimisers of autonomous, convex variational of linear growth which depend on the symmetric gradient rather than the full gradient. This extends the results available in the literature for the BV-setting to the case of functionals whose full gradients are a priori not known to exist as matrix-valued Radon measures.

On critical $\mathrm{L}^p$-differentiability of $\mathrm{BD}$-maps

We prove that functions of locally bounded deformation on $\mathbb{R}^n$ are $\mathrm{L}^{n/(n-1)}$-differentiable almost everywhere. More generally, we show that this critical $\mathrm{L}^p$-differentiability result holds for functions of locally bounded $\mathbb{A}$-variation, provided that the first order, homogeneous, linear differential operator $\mathbb{A}$ has finite dimensional null-space.
