Time-frequency analysis on the adeles over the rationals

We show that the construction of Gabor frames in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ with generators in $\mathbf{S}_{0}(\mathbb{R})$ and with respect to time-frequency shifts from a rectangular lattice $α\mathbb{Z}\timesβ\mathbb{Z}$ is equivalent to the construction of certain Gabor frames for $L^{2}$ over the adeles over the rationals and the group $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. Furthermore, we detail the connection between the construction of Gabor frames on the adeles and on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ with the construction of certain Heisenberg modules.

Mixed-state localization operators: Cohen's class and trace class operators

We study mixed-state localization operators from the perspective of Werner's operator convolutions which allows us to extend known results from the rank-one case to trace class operators. The idea of localizing a signal to a domain in phase space is approached from various directions such as bounds on the spreading function, probability densities associated to mixed-state localization operators, positive operator valued measures, positive correspondence rules and variants of Tauberian theorems for operator translates. Our results include a rigorous treatment of multiwindow-STFT filters and a characterization of mixed-state localization operators as positive correspondence rules. Furthermore, we provide a description of the Cohen class in terms of Werner's convolution of operators and deduce consequences on positive Cohen class distributions, an uncertainty principle, uniqueness and phase retrieval for general elements of Cohen's class.

On accumulated Cohen's class distributions and mixed-state localization operators

Recently we introduced mixed-state localization operators associated to a density operator and a (compact) domain in phase space. We continue the investigations of their eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Our main focus is the definition of a time-frequency distribution which is based on the Cohen class distribution associated to the density operator and the eigenvectors of the mixed-state localization operator. This time-frequency distribution is called the accumulated Cohen class distribution. If the trace class operator is a rank-one operator, then the mixed-state localization operators and the accumulated Cohen class distribution reduce to Daubechies' localization operators and the accumulated spectrogram. We extend all the results about the accumulated spectrogram to the accumulated Cohen class distribution. The techniques used in the case of spectrograms cannot be adapted to other distributions in Cohen's class since they rely on the reproducing kernel property of the short-time Fourier transform. Our approach is based on quantum harmonic analysis on phase space which also provides the tools and notions to introduce the analogues of the accumulated spectrogram for mixed-state localization operators; the accumulated Cohen's class distributions.

The Balian-Low theorem and noncommutative tori

We point out a link between the theorem of Balian and Low on the non-existence of well-localized Gabor-Riesz bases and a constant curvature connection on projective modules over noncommutative tori.

Solitons of general topological charge over noncommutative tori

We continue the study of solitons over noncommutative tori from the perspective of time-frequency analysis and treat the case of a general topological charge. Solutions are associated with vector bundles of higher rank over noncommutative tori. We express these vector bundles in terms of vector-valued Gabor frames and apply the duality theory of Gabor analysis to show that Gaussians are solitons of general topological charge over noncommutative tori. An energy functional for projections over noncommutative tori is the basis for the self and anti-self duality equations of the solitons which turns out to have a reformulation in terms of Gabor atoms and we prove that projections generated by Gaussians minimize this energy functional. Finally, we comment on the case of the Moyal plane and the associated continuous vector-valued Gabor frames and show that Gaussians are the only class of solitons.

Convolutions for Berezin quantization and Berezin-Lieb inequalities

Notions and results from quantum harmonic analysis, such as the convolution between functions and operators or between two operators, is identified as the appropriate setting for Berezin quantization and Berezin-Lieb inequalities. Based on this insight we provide a rigorous approach to generalized phase-space representation introduced by Klauder-Skagerstam and their variants of Berezin-Lieb inequalities in this setting. Hence our presentation of the results of Klauder-Skagerstam gives a more conceptual framework, which yields as a byproduct an interesting perspective on the connection between Berezin quantization and Weyl quantization.

Convolutions for localization operators

Quantum harmonic analysis on phase space is shown to be linked with localization operators. The convolution between operators and the convolution between a function and an operator provide a conceptual framework for the theory of localization operators which is complemented by an appropriate Fourier transform, the Fourier-Wigner transform. We use Lieb's uncertainty principle to establish a sharp Hausdorff-Young inequality for the Fourier-Wigner transform. Noncommutative Tauberian theorems due to Werner allow us to extend results of Bayer and Gröchenig on localization operators. Furthermore we show that the Arveson spectrum and the theory of Banach modules provide the abstract setting of quantum harmonic analysis.

Sigma-model solitons on noncommutative spaces

We use results from time-frequency analysis and Gabor analysis to construct new classes of sigma-model solitons over the Moyal plane and over noncommutative tori, taken as source spaces, with a target space made of two points. A natural action functional leads to self-duality equations for projections in the source algebra. Solutions, having non-trivial topological content, are constructed via suitable Morita duality bimodules.

A pseudo-differential calculus on non-standard symplectic space; spectral and regularity results in modulation spaces

The usual Weyl calculus is intimately associated with the choice of the standard symplectic structure on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\oplus\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In this paper we will show that the replacement of this structure by an arbitrary symplectic structure leads to a pseudo-differential calculus of operators acting on functions or distributions defined, not on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ but rather on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\oplus\mathbb{R}^{n}$. These operators are intertwined with the standard Weyl pseudo-differential operators using an infinite family of partial isometries of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\longrightarrow L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ \ indexed by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. This allows us obtain spectral and regularity results for our operators using Shubin's symbol classes and Feichtinger's modulation spaces.

Quantum mechanics in phase space: The Schrödinger and the Moyal representations

We present a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics in the Schrödinger representation and derive the associated Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. We prove that the resulting theory is unitarily equivalent to the standard "configuration space" formulation and show that it allows for a uniform treatment of both pure and mixed quantum states. In the second part of the paper we determine the unitary transformation (and its infinitesimal generator) that maps the phase space Schrödinger representation into another (called Moyal) representation, where the wave function is the cross-Wigner function familiar from deformation quantization. Some features of this representation are studied, namely the associated pseudo-differential calculus and the main spectral and dynamical results. Finally, the relation with deformation quantization is discussed.

Preferred Quantization Rules: Born-Jordan vs. Weyl: the Pseudo-Differential Point of View

There has recently been evidence for replacing the usual Weyl quantization procedure by the older and much less known Born-Jordan rule. In this paper we discuss this quantization procedure in detail and relate it to recent results of Boggiato, De Donno, and Oliaro on the Cohen class. We begin with a discussion of some properties of Shubin's $τ$-pseudo-differential calculus, which allows us to show that the Born-Jordan quantization of a symbol $a$ is the average for $τ\in\lbrack0,1]$ of the $τ$-operators with symbol $a$. We study the properties of the Born-Jordan operators, including their symplectic covariance, and give their Weyl symbol.

Projections in noncommutative tori and Gabor frames

We describe a connection between two seemingly different problems: (a) the construction of projections in noncommutative tori, (b) the construction of tight Gabor frames. The present investigation relies an interpretation of projective modules over noncommutative tori in terms of Gabor analysis. The main result demonstrates that Rieffel's condition on the existence of projections in noncommutative tori is equivalent to the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality relations for tight Gabor frames. Therefore we are able to invoke results on the existence of Gabor frames in the construction of projections in noncommutative tori. In particular, the projection associated with a Gabor frame generated by a Gaussian turns out to be Boca's projection. Our approach to Boca's projection allows us to characterize the range of existence of Boca's projection. The presentation of our main result provides a natural approach to the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality relations in terms of Hilbert C*-modules over noncommutative tori.

Projective modules over noncommutative tori are multi-window Gabor frames for modulation spaces

In the present investigation we are linking noncommutative geometry over noncommutative tori with Gabor analysis, where the first has its roots in operator algebras and the second in time-frequency analysis. Therefore we are in the position to invoke modern methods of operator algebras, e.g. topological stable rank of Banach algebras, to exploit the deeper properties of Gabor frames. Furthermore we are able to extend results due to Connes and Rieffel on projective modules over noncommutative tori to Banach algebras, which arise in a natural manner in Gabor analysis. The main goal of this investigation is twofold: (i) an interpretation of projective modules over noncommutative tori in terms of Gabor analysis and (ii) that the Morita-Rieffel equivalence between noncommutative tori is the natural framework for the duality theory of Gabor frames. More concretely, we interpret generators of projective modules over noncommutative tori as the Gabor atoms of multi-window Gabor frames for modulation spaces. Moreover, we show that this implies the {\it existence} of good multi-window Gabor frames for modulation spaces with Gabor atoms in Feichtinger's algebra and in Schwartz space.

Quantum theta functions and Gabor frames for modulation spaces

Representations of the celebrated Heisenberg commutation relations in quantum mechanics and their exponentiated versions form the starting point for a number of basic constructions, both in mathematics and mathematical physics (geometric quantization, quantum tori, classical and quantum theta functions) and signal analysis (Gabor analysis). In this paper we try to bridge the two communities, represented by the two co--authors: that of noncommutative geometry and that of signal analysis. After providing a brief comparative dictionary of the two languages, we will show e.g. that the Janssen representation of Gabor frames with generalized Gaussians as Gabor atoms yields in a natural way quantum theta functions, and that the Rieffel scalar product and associativity relations underlie both the functional equations for quantum thetas and the Fundamental Identity of Gabor analysis.

On the Usefulness of Modulation Spaces in Deformation Quantization

We discuss the relevance to deformation quantization of Feichtinger's modulation spaces, especially of the weighted Sjoestrand classes. These function spaces are good classes of symbols of pseudo-differential operators (observables). They have a widespread use in time-frequency analysis and related topics, but are not very well-known in physics. It turns out that they are particularly well adapted to the study of the Moyal star-product and of the star-exponential.

Spectral and regularity properties of an operator calculus related to Landau quantization

The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian operator of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, but also to prove global hypoellipticity results and to study the regularity of the solutions to Schroedinger equations.
