The Conway-Maxwell-Poisson distribution: distributional theory and approximation

The Conway-Maxwell-Poisson (CMP) distribution is a natural two-parameter generalisation of the Poisson distribution which has received some attention in the statistics literature in recent years by offering flexible generalisations of some well-known models. In this work, we begin by establishing some properties of both the CMP distribution and an analogous generalisation of the binomial distribution, which we refer to as the CMB distribution. We also consider some convergence results and approximations, including a bound on the total variation distance between a CMB distribution and the corresponding CMP limit.

Negative dependence and stochastic orderings

We explore negative dependence and stochastic orderings, showing that if an integer-valued random variable $W$ satisfies a certain negative dependence assumption, then $W$ is smaller (in the convex sense) than a Poisson variable of equal mean. Such $W$ include those which may be written as a sum of totally negatively dependent indicators. This is generalised to other stochastic orderings. Applications include entropy bounds, Poisson approximation and concentration. The proof uses thinning and size-biasing. We also show how these give a different Poisson approximation result, which is applied to mixed Poisson distributions. Analogous results for the binomial distribution are also presented.

Compound geometric approximation under a failure rate constraint

We consider compound geometric approximation for a nonnegative, integer-valued random variable $W$. The bound we give is straightforward but relies on having a lower bound on the failure rate of $W$. Applications are presented to M/G/1 queuing systems, for which we state explicit bounds in approximations for the number of customers in the system and the number of customers served during a busy period. Other applications are given to birth-death processes and Poisson processes.

Bounds on the Poincare constant under negative dependence

We give bounds on the Poincare (inverse spectral gap) constant of a non-negative, integer-valued random variable W, under negative dependence assumptions such as ultra log-concavity and total negative dependence. We show that the bounds obtained compare well to others in the literature. Examples treated include some occupancy and urn models, a random graph model and small spacings on the circumference of a circle. Applications to Poisson convergence theorems are considered.

Stein's method and stochastic orderings

A stochastic ordering approach is applied with Stein's method for approximation by the equilibrium distribution of a birth-death process. The usual stochastic order and the more general s-convex orders are discussed. Attention is focused on Poisson and translated Poisson approximation of a sum of dependent Bernoulli random variables, for example k-runs in i.i.d. Bernoulli trials. Other applications include approximation by polynomial birth--death distributions.
