Revealing a Systematic High-latitude Current Sheet at Jupiter

Based on models derived from Earth's magnetotail, other planets with dipole magnetic fields, including Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn, were expected to possess similar magnetotail configurations. In this traditional picture, the majority of plasma is confined near the magnetic equator within a plasma sheet (or plasma disc), whereas higher-latitude regions feature strong magnetic fields that are open to the solar wind, forming magnetospheric lobes. However, auroral observations and recent simulations have shown that Jupiter's magnetic topology differs markedly from this picture, particularly in its high-latitude regions where magnetic field lines are predominantly closed. This discrepancy calls for a re-examination of high-latitude magnetospheric structure at Jupiter. Here, using Juno measurements acquired between 2016 and 2022, we show that Jupiter's nightside high latitudes host a persistent current-sheet-like structure above about 40 degrees magnetic latitude near midnight. This structure contains internally sourced oxygen and sulfur ions and exhibits azimuthal magnetic signatures opposite to the bend-back of the equatorial current sheet. These findings indicate that the canonical picture of planetary magnetotail architecture requires revision. Our results provide new insight into the architecture of rapidly rotating magnetospheres and offer a framework for interpreting magnetospheric structures at exoplanets.

Magnetic Reconnection in the Plasma Disk at 23 Jupiter Radii

A key open question in astrophysics is how plasma is transported within strongly magnetized, rapidly rotating systems. Magnetic reconnection and flux tube interchange are possible mechanisms, with Jupiter serving as the best local analog for distant systems. However, magnetic reconnection at Jupiter remains poorly understood. A key indicator of active magnetic reconnection is the ion diffusion region, but its detection at Jupiter has remained unconfirmed. Here, we report a unique magnetic reconnection event in Jupiter's inner magnetosphere that presents the first detection of an ion diffusion region. We provide evidence that this event involves localized flux tube interchange motion driven by centrifugal forces, which occurs inside a thin current sheet formed by the collision and twisting of two distinct flux tubes. This study provides new insights into Io-genic plasma transport at Jupiter and the unique role of magnetic reconnection in rapidly rotating systems, two key unresolved questions.

Ganymede MHD Model: Magnetospheric Context for Juno's PJ34 Flyby

On June 7th, 2021 the Juno spacecraft visited Ganymede and provided the first in situ observations since Galileo's last flyby in 2000. The measurements obtained along a one-dimensional trajectory can be brought into global context with the help of three-dimensional magnetospheric models. Here we apply the magnetohydrodynamic model of Duling et al. (2014) to conditions during the Juno flyby. In addition to the global distribution of plasma variables we provide mapping of Juno's position along magnetic field lines, Juno's distance from closed field lines and detailed information about the magnetic field's topology. We find that Juno did not enter the closed field line region and that the boundary between open and closed field lines on the surface matches the poleward edges of the observed auroral ovals. To estimate the sensitivity of the model results, we carry out a parameter study with different upstream plasma conditions and other model parameters.

Anisotropic kappa distributions I: Formulation based on particle correlations

We develop the theoretical basis for the connection of the variety of anisotropic distributions with the statistical correlations among particles velocity components. By examining the most common anisotropic distribution, we derive the correlation coefficient among particle energies, show how this correlation is connected to the effective dimensionality of the velocity distribution, and derive the connection between anisotropy and adiabatic polytropic index. Having established the importance of correlation among particles in the formulation of anisotropic kappa distributions, we generalize these distributions within the framework of nonextensive statistical mechanics and based on the types of homogeneous or heterogeneous correlations among the particles velocity components. The formulation of the developed generalized distributions mediates the main two types of anisotropic kappa distributions, considering (a) equal correlations, or (b) zero correlations, among different velocity components. Finally, the developed anisotropic kappa distributions are expressed in terms of the energy and pitch angle in arbitrary reference frames.
