A chemotaxis-consumption model with boundary inflow of a nutrient, steady states

In this manuscript we consider the steady state problem for a chemotaxis-consumption model with positive inflow of a nutrient across the boundary. We show that in any bounded smooth domain there exists a unique nonconstant steady state provided that the mass of bacteria is sufficiently large. We further prove that, if the domain is a ball, this condition can be dropped and solutions exist for any positive bacterial mass.

Refined temporal asymptotics near blow-up points in the planar Keller-Segel system

For the Keller-Segel system \[ \left\{\, \begin{aligned} u_t &= \Delta u - \nabla \cdot ( u \nabla v ), \\ v_t &= \Delta v - v + u \end{aligned} \right. \tag{$\star$} \] posed in a planar domain $\Omega$ with Neumann boundary conditions, the existence of classical solutions blowing up at some finite time $T$ has long been established. In fact, it has been shown that for every blow-up point $x$ the quantity $\int_{B_R(x)\cap\Omega} u(\cdot,t )\ln(u(\cdot, t))$ is unbounded as $t\nearrow T$ for all $R > 0$ even though the global mass of $u$ is always conserved. The present manuscript provides some quantitative information on the behavior of such localized $L\log L$ expressions by asserting the existence of $\delta_0=\delta_0(\Omega)>0$ such that any solution to the Neumann problem for ($\star$) blowing up at time $T\in (0,\infty)$ satisfies \[ \limsup_{t\nearrow T} \frac{1}{\ln\frac{T}{T-t}}\int_{B_R(x)\cap\Omega} u(\cdot, t)\ln(u(\cdot, t)) \ge \delta_0 \tag{$\star\star$} \] for all $R > 0$ at each blow-up point $x$. This confirms a certain universality property of the blow-up mechanism seen in the particular examples of radial collapsing solutions constructed in the seminal work [16], especially also beyond the realm of symmetry; apart from that, along with a consequence of ($\star\star$) on the corresponding asymptotics of similarly localized $L^p$ norms of $u$ for $p\in (1,\infty]$, this provides some extension of a known result on non-degeneracy of blow-up points that has concentrated on the choice $p=\infty$ here.

Shrinking vs. expanding: the evolution of spatial support in degenerate Keller-Segel systems

We consider radially symmetric solutions of the degenerate Keller-Segel system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} \partial_t u=\nabla\cdot (u^{m-1}\nabla u - u\nabla v),\\ 0=\Delta v -\mu +u,\quad\mu =\frac{1}{|\Omega|}\int_\Omega u, \end{cases} \end{align*} in balls $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 1$, where $m>1$ is arbitrary. Our main result states that the initial evolution of the positivity set of $u$ is essentially determined by the shape of the (nonnegative, radially symmetric, H\"older continuous) initial data $u_0$ near the boundary of its support $\overline{B_{r_1}(0)}\subsetneq\Omega$: It shrinks for sufficiently flat and expands for sufficiently steep $u_0$. More precisely, there exists an explicit constant $A_{\mathrm{crit}} \in (0, \infty)$ (depending only on $m, n, R, r_1$ and $\int_\Omega u_0$) such that if \begin{align*} u_0(x)\le A(r_1-|x|)^\frac{1}{m-1} \qquad \text{for all $|x|\in(r_0, r_1)$ and some $r_0\in(0,r_1)$ and $A 0$ and $\zeta>0$ such that $\sup\{\, |x| \mid x \in \operatorname{supp} u(\cdot, t)\,\}\le r_1 -\zeta t$ for all $t\in(0, T)$, while if \begin{align*} u_0(x)\ge A(r_1-|x|)^\frac{1}{m-1} \qquad \text{for all $|x|\in(r_0, r_1)$ and some $r_0 \in (0, r_1)$ and $A>A_{\mathrm{crit}}$}, \end{align*} then we can find $T>0$ and $\zeta>0$ such that $\sup\{\, |x| \mid x \in \operatorname{supp} u(\cdot, t)\,\}\ge r_1 +\zeta t$ for all $t\in(0, T)$.

Can a chemotaxis-consumption system recover from a measure-type aggregation state in arbitrary dimension?

We consider the chemotaxis-consumption system \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t &= \Delta u - \chi \nabla \cdot (u\nabla v) \\ v_t &= \Delta v - uv \end{aligned} \right. \] in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 2$, with parameter $\chi > 0$ and Neumann boundary conditions. It is well known that, for sufficiently smooth nonnegative initial data and under a smallness condition for the initial state of $v$, solutions of the above system never blow up and are even globally bounded. Going in a sense a step further in this paper, we ask the question whether the system can even recover from an initial state that already resembles measure-type blowup. To answer this, we show that, given an arbitrarily large positive Radon measure $u_0$ with $u_0(\overline{\Omega}) > 0$ as the initial data for the first equation and a nonnegative $L^\infty(\Omega)$ function $v_0$ with \[ 0 < \|v_0\|_{L^{\infty}(\Omega)} < \frac{2}{3n\chi} \] as initial data for the second equation, it is still possible to construct a global classic solution to the above system.

Two new functional inequalities and their application to the eventual smoothness of solutions to a chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system with rotational flux

We prove two new functional inequalities of the forms\[ \int_G \varphi (\psi - \overline{\psi}) \leq \frac{1}{a}\int_G \psi \ln \left(\frac{\;\psi\;}{ \overline{\psi}}\right) + \frac{a}{4\beta_0} \left\{ \int_G \psi \right\}\int_G|\nabla \varphi|^2 \] and \[ \int_G \psi \ln \left(\frac{\;\psi\;}{ \overline{\psi}}\right) \leq \frac{1}{\beta_0}\left\{ \int_G \psi \right\}\int_G |\nabla \ln(\psi)|^2 \] for any finitely connected, bounded $C^2$-domain $G \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$, a constant $\beta_0 > 0$, any $a > 0$ and sufficiently regular functions $\varphi$, $\psi$. We then illustrate their usefulness by proving long time stabilization and eventual smoothness properties for certain generalized solutions to the chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system\[ \left\{\;\; \begin{aligned} n_t + u \cdot \nabla n &\;\;=\;\; \Delta n - \nabla \cdot (nS(x,n,c) \nabla c), \\ c_t + u\cdot \nabla c &\;\;=\;\; \Delta c - n f(c), \\ u_t + (u\cdot \nabla) u &\;\;=\;\; \Delta u + \nabla P + n \nabla \phi, \;\;\;\;\;\; \nabla \cdot u = 0, \end{aligned} \right. \] on a smooth, bounded, convex domain $\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ with no-flux boundary conditions for $n$ and $c$ as well as a Dirichlet boundary condition for $u$. We further allow for a general chemotactic sensitivity $S$ attaining values in $\mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}$ as opposed to a scalar one.

Does strong repulsion lead to smooth solutions in a repulsion-attraction chemotaxis system even when starting with highly irregular initial data?

It has been well established that, in attraction-repulsion Keller-Segel systems of the form\begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t &= \Delta u - \chi \nabla \cdot (u\nabla v) + \xi \nabla \cdot (u\nabla w), \\ \tau v_t &= \Delta v + \alpha u - \beta v,\\ \tau w_t &= \Delta w + \gamma u - \delta w \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, with Neumann boundary conditions and parameters $\chi, \xi \geq 0$, $\alpha,\beta,\gamma,\delta > 0$ and $\tau \in \{0,1\}$, finite-time blow-up can be ruled out in many scenarios given sufficiently smooth initial data if the repulsive chemotaxis is sufficiently stronger than its attractive counterpart. In this paper, we will go - in a sense - a step further than this by studying the same system with initial data that could already be understood as being in a blown-up state (e.g. a positive Radon measure for the first solution component) and then ask the question whether sufficiently strong repulsion has enough of a regularizing effect to lead to the existence of a smooth solution, which is still connected to said initial data in a sensible fashion. Regarding this, we in fact establish that the construction of such a solution is possible in the two-dimensional parabolic-parabolic system and the two- and three-dimensional parabolic-elliptic system under appropriate assumptions on the interaction of repulsion and attraction as well as the initial data.

Global existence and stabilization in a diffusive predator-prey model with population flux by attractive transition

The diffusive Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} u_t &=& \nabla\cdot \left[ d_1\nabla u + \chi v^2 \nabla \Big(\dfrac{u}{v}\Big)\right] +u(m_1-u+av), \qquad & x\in\Omega, \ t>0, \\ v_t &=& d_2\Delta v+v(m_2-bu-v), \qquad & x\in\Omega, \ t>0, \end{array} \right. \end{eqnarray*} is considered in a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \in\{2,3\}$, under Neumann boundary condition, where $d_1, d_2, m_1, \chi, a, b$ are positive constants and $m_2$ is a real constant. The purpose of this paper is to establish global existence and boundedness of classical solutions in the case $n=2$ and global existence of weak solutions in the case $n=3$ as well as show long-time stabilization. More precisely, we prove that the solutions $(u(\cdot,t), v(\cdot,t))$ converge to the constant steady state $(u_*, v_*)$ as $t \to \infty$, where $u_*, v_*$ solves $u_*(m_1-u_*+av_*)=v_*(m_2-bu_*-v_*)=0$ with $u_* > 0$ (covering both coexistence as well as prey-extinction cases).

Global solutions to a haptotaxis system with a potentially degenerate diffusion tensor in two and three dimensions

We consider the potentially degenerate haptotaxis system \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t &= \nabla \cdot (\mathbb{D} \nabla u + u \nabla \cdot \mathbb{D}) - \chi \nabla \cdot (u\mathbb{D}\nabla w) + \mu u(1-u^{r- 1}), \\ w_t &= - uw \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \in \{2,3\}$, with a no-flux boundary condition, positive initial data $u_0$, $w_0$ and parameters $\chi > 0$, $\mu > 0$, $r \geq 2$ and $\mathbb{D}: \overline{\Omega} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n\times n}$, $\mathbb{D}$ positive semidefinite on $\overline{\Omega}$. Our main result regarding the above system is the construction of weak solutions under fairly mild assumptions on $\mathbb{D}$ as well as the initial data, encompassing scenarios of degenerate diffusion in the first equation. As a step in this construction as well as a result of potential independent interest, we further construct classical solutions for the same system under a global positivity assumption for $\mathbb{D}$, which ensures the full regularizing influence of its associated diffusion operator. In both constructions, we naturally rely on the regularizing properties of a sufficiently strong logistic source term in the first equation.

Unboundedness phenomenon in a model of urban crime

We show that spatial patterns ("hotspots") may form in the crime model \begin{equation} \left\{\; \begin{aligned} u_{t} &= \tfrac{1}{\varepsilon}\Delta u - \tfrac{\chi}{\varepsilon} \nabla \cdot \left(\tfrac{u}{v} \nabla v \right) - \varepsilon uv, \\ v_{t} &= \Delta v - v + u v, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation} which we consider in $\Omega = B_R(0) \subset \mathbb R^n$, $R > 0$, $n \geq 3$ with $\varepsilon > 0$, $\chi > 0$ and initial data $u_0$, $v_0$ with sufficiently large initial mass $m := \int_\Omega u_0$. More precisely, for each $T > 0$ and fixed $\Omega$, $\chi$ and (large) $m$, we construct initial data $v_0$ exhibiting the following unboundedness phenomenon: Given any $M>0$, we can find $\varepsilon > 0$ such that the first component of the associated maximal solution becomes larger than $M$ at some point in $\Omega$ before the time $T$. Since the $L^1$ norm of $u$ is decreasing, this implies that some heterogeneous structure must form. We do this by first constructing classical solutions to the nonlocal scalar problem \[ w_t = \Delta w + m \frac{w^{\chi+1}}{\int_\Omega w^\chi} \] from the solutions to the crime model by taking the limit $\varepsilon \searrow 0$ under the assumption that the unboundedness phenomenon explicitly does not occur on some interval $(0,T)$. We then construct initial data for this scalar problem leading to blow-up before time $T$. As solutions to the scalar problem are unique, this proves our central result by contradiction.

On the existence of global smooth solutions to the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system with irregular initial data

We consider the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t &= Δu - χ\nabla \cdot (u \nabla v), \\ 0 &= Δv - v + u \end{aligned} \right. \tag{$\star$} \] in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, with Neumann boundary conditions. We look at both chemotactic attraction ($χ> 0$) and repulsion ($χ< 0$) scenarios in two and three dimensions. The key feature of interest for the purposes of this paper is under which conditions said system still admits global classical solutions due to the smoothing properties of the Laplacian even if the initial data is very irregular. Regarding this, we show for initial data $μ\in \mathcal{M}_+(\overlineΩ)$ that, if either \begin{align} \bullet\;& n = 2,\, χ< 0\, \text{ or } \\ \bullet\;& n = 2,\, χ> 0\, \text{ and the initial mass is small or } \\ \bullet\;& n = 3,\, χ< 0\, \text{ and } μ= f \in L^p(Ω), p > 1 \end{align} holds, it is still possible to construct global classical solutions to ($\star$), which are continuous in $t = 0$ in the vague topology on $M_+(\overlineΩ)$.

Generalized solutions for a system of partial differential equations arising from urban crime modeling with a logistic source term

We consider the system \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t &= Δu - χ\nabla \cdot ( \tfrac{u}{v} \nabla v) - uv + ρu - μu^2, \\ v_t &= Δv - v + u v \end{aligned} \right. \tag{$\star$} \] with $ρ\in \mathbb{R}, μ> 0, χ> 0$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ with smooth boundary. While very similar to chemotaxis models from biology, this system is in fact inspired by recent modeling approaches in criminology to analyze the formation of crime hot spots in cities. The key addition here in comparison to similar models is the logistic source term. The central complication this system then presents us with, apart from us allowing for arbitrary $χ> 0$, is the nonlinear growth term $uv$ in the second equation as it makes obtaining a priori information for $v$ rather difficult. Fortunately, it is somewhat tempered by its negative counterpart and the logistic source term in the first equation. It is this interplay that still gives us enough access to a priori information to achieve the main result of this paper, namely the construction of certain generalized solutions to ($\star$). To illustrate how close the interaction of the $uv$ term in the second equation and the $-μu^2$ term in the first equation is to granting us classical global solvability, we further give a short argument showing that strengthening the $-μu^2$ term to $-μu^{2+γ}$ with $γ> 0$ in the first equation directly leads to global classical solutions.

Global mass-preserving solutions for a two-dimensional chemotaxis system with rotational flux components coupled with a full Navier-Stokes equation

We study the chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system \[\left\{\; \begin{aligned} n_t + u\cdot\nabla n &=Δn - \nabla\cdot (nS(x,n,c)\nabla c), &&x\inΩ, t > 0, \\ c_t + u\cdot\nabla c &=Δc - n f(c), && x\in Ω, t > 0, \\ u_t + (u\cdot\nabla) u &=Δu + \nabla P + n \nabla ϕ, \;\;\;\; \nabla\cdot u = 0, && x\inΩ, t > 0 \end{aligned}\right.\tag{$\star$} \] with no-flux boundary conditions for $n$, $c$ in a bounded, convex domain $Ω\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2$ with a smooth boundary, which is motivated by recent modeling approaches from biology for aerobic bacteria suspended in a sessile water drop. We further do not assume the chemotactic sensitivity $S$ to be scalar as is common, but to be able to attain values in $\mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}$, which allows for more complex modeling of bacterial behavior near the boundary. This is seen as a potential source of the structure formation observed in experiments. While there have been various results for scalar chemotactic sensitivities $S$ due to a convenient energy-type inequality and some for the non-scalar case with only a Stokes fluid equation (or other strong restrictions) simplifying the analysis of the third equation in ($\star$) significantly, we consider the full combined case under little restrictions for the system giving us very little to go on in terms of a priori estimates. We nonetheless manage to still achieve sufficient estimates using Trudinger-Moser type inequalities to extend the existence results seen in a recent work by Winkler for the Stokes case with non-scalar $S$ to the full Navier-Stokes case. Namely, we construct a similar global mass-preserving generalized solution for ($\star$) in planar convex domains for sufficiently smooth parameter functions $S$, $f$ and $ϕ$ and only under the fairly weak assumptions that $S$ is appropriately bounded, $f$ is non-negative and $f(0) = 0$.
