Approaching Kasteleyn transition in frustrated quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We show that the Kasteleyn transition, the abrupt proliferation of infinite strings of defects in classical dimer and related models, can also be relevant for frustrated 2d quantum magnets. This is explicitly demonstrated in a phase of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond-decorated honeycomb lattice where a family of exact eigenstates built as products of dimer and plaquette singlets can be mapped onto the dimer coverings of the honeycomb lattice. The low-temperature properties of this phase are accurately described by an effective dimer model with anisotropic activities and a small, tunable density of monomers, leading to an arbitrarily sharp crossover version of the Kasteleyn transition. The generalization to other geometries and the possibility to realize this model in organo-metallic compounds are briefly discussed.

Spin dynamics of coupled spin ladders near quantum criticality in Ba2CuTeO6

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in Ba2CuTeO6, proposed by ab initio calculations to magnetically realize weakly coupled antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders. Isolated ladders are expected to have a singlet ground state protected by a spin gap. Ba2CuTeO6 orders magnetically, but with a small Neel temperature relative to the exchange strength, suggesting that the interladder couplings are relatively small and only just able to stabilize magnetic order, placing Ba2CuTeO6 close in parameter space to the critical point separating the gapped phase and Neel order. Through comparison of the observed spin dynamics with linear spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we propose values for all relevant intra- and interladder exchange parameters, which place the system on the ordered side of the phase diagram in proximity to the critical point. We also compare high field magnetization data with quantum Monte Carlo predictions for the proposed model of coupled ladders.

Thermal Critical Points and Quantum Critical End Point in the Frustrated Bilayer Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We consider the finite-temperature phase diagram of the $S = 1/2$ frustrated Heisenberg bilayer. Although this two-dimensional system may show magnetic order only at zero temperature, we demonstrate the presence of a line of finite-temperature critical points related to the line of first-order transitions between the dimer-singlet and -triplet regimes. We show by high-precision quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which are sign-free in the fully frustrated limit, that this critical point is in the Ising universality class. At zero temperature, the continuous transition between the ordered bilayer and the dimer-singlet state terminates on the first-order line, giving a quantum critical end point, and we use tensor-network calculations to follow the first-order discontinuities in its vicinity.

Cu-Sb dumbbell arrangement in the spin-orbital liquid candidate Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$

The absence of both spin freezing and of a static Jahn-Teller effect have lead to the proposition that Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ is a quantum spin-orbital liquid. However, theoretical understanding of the microscopic origin of this behavior has been hampered by a lack of consensus on the lattice structure. Cu ions have been proposed to realize either a triangular lattice, a short-range ordered honeycomb lattice or a disordered lattice with stripelike correlations. Here we analyze the stability of idealized versions of these arrangements using density functional theory. We find stripe order of Cu ions to be energetically favored, hinting towards stripelike local Cu-Cu arrangements, while long-range order is presumably hindered due to disorder effects. Furthermore, we find evidence of significant interlayer interactions between Cu-Sb dumbbells, which affects the out-of-plane arrangement. Analysis of the relaxed crystal structures, electronic properties and tight-binding parameters provides clues as to the nature of the Jahn-Teller distortions.

Spin-liquid behaviour and the interplay between Pokrovsky-Talapov and Ising criticality in the distorted, triangular-lattice, dipolar Ising antiferromagnet

We study the triangular-lattice Ising model with dipolar interactions, inspired by its realisation in artificial arrays of nanomagnets. We show that a classical spin-liquid forms at intermediate temperatures, and that its behaviour can be tuned by temperature and/or a small lattice distortion between a string Luttinger liquid and a domain-wall-network state. At low temperature there is a transition into a magnetically ordered phase, which can be first-order or continous with a crossover in the critical behaviour between Pokrovsky-Talapov and 2D-Ising universality. When the Pokrovsky-Talapov criticality dominates, the transition is essentially of the Kasteleyn type.

Spontaneous dimerization, critical lines, and short-range correlations in a frustrated spin-1 chain

We report on a detailed investigation of the spin-1 $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Heisenberg model, a frustrated model with nearest-neighbor coupling $J_1$, next-nearest neighbor coupling $J_2$, and a three site interaction $J_3\left[({\bf S}_{i-1}\cdot {\bf S}_i)({\bf S}_i\cdot {\bf S}_{i+1})+{\mathrm H.c.}\right]$ previously studied in [Phys. Rev. B 93, 241108(R) (2016)]. Using DMRG and exact diagonalizations, we show that the phase boundaries between the Haldane phase, the next-nearest neighbor Haldane phase and the dimerized phase can be very accurately determined by combining the information deduced from the dimerization, the ground-state energy, the entanglement spectrum and the Berry phase. By a careful investigation of the finite-size spectrum, we also show that the transition between the next-nearest neighbor Haldane phase and the dimerized phase is in the Ising universality class all along the critical line. Furthermore, we justify the conformal embedding of the $SU(2)_2$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory in terms of a boson and an Ising field, and we explicitly derive a number of consequences of this embedding for the spectrum along the $SU(2)_2$ transition line between the Haldane phase and the dimerized phase. We also show that the solitons along the first-order transition line between the Haldane phase and the dimerized phase carry a spin-1/2, while those between different dimerization domains inside the dimerized phase carry a spin 1. Finally, we show that short-range correlations change character in the Haldane and dimerized phases through disorder and Lifshitz lines, as well as through the development of short-range dimer correlations in the Haldane phase, leading to a remarkably rich phase diagram.

Comment on "Frustration and Multicriticality in the Antiferromagnetic Spin-1 Chain"

The phase diagram of the spin-1 chain with bilinear-biquadratic and next-nearest neighbor inter- actions, recently investigated by Pixley, Shashi and Nevidomskyy [Phys. Rev. B 90, 214426 (2014)], has been revisited in the light of results we have recently obtained on a similar model. Combining extensive Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) simulations with conformal-field theory arguments, we confirm the presence of the three phases identified by Pixley et al, a Haldane phase, a next-nearest neighbor (NNN) Haldane phase, and a dimerized phase, but we come to significantly different conclusions regarding the nature of the phase transitions to the dimerized phase: i) We provide numerical evidence of a continuous Ising transition between the NNN-Haldane phase and the dimerized phase; ii) We show that the tri-critical end point, where the continuous transition between the Haldane phase and the dimerized phase turns into a first order transition, is distinct from the triple point where the three phases meet; iii) Finally, we demonstrate that the tri-critical end point is in the same Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) SU(2) level 2 universality class as the continuous transition line that ends at this point

Topological aspects of symmetry breaking in triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnets

Using a specially designed Monte Carlo algorithm with directed loops, we investigate the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet with coupling beyond nearest neighbour. We show that the first-order transition from the stripe state to the paramagnet can be split, giving rise to an intermediate nematic phase in which algebraic correlations coexist with a broken symmetry. Furthermore, we demonstrate the emergence of several properties of a more topological nature such as fractional edge excitations in the stripe state, the proliferation of double domain walls in the nematic phase, and the Kasteleyn transition between them. Experimental implications are briefly discussed.

Dimerization transitions in spin-1 chains

We study spontaneous dimerization transitions in a Heisenberg spin-1 chain with additional next-nearest neighbor (NNN) and 3-site interactions using extensive numerical simulations and a conformal field theory analysis. We show that the transition can be second order in the WZW SU(2)$_2$ or Ising universality class, or first-order. We argue that these features are generic because of a marginal operator in the WZW SU(2)$_2$ model, and because of two topologically distinct non-dimerized phases with or without edge states. We also provide explicit numerical evidence of conformal towers of singlets inside the spin gap at the Ising transition. Implications for other models are briefly discussed.

Exact diagonalization of Heisenberg $SU(N)$ chains in the fully symmetric and antisymmetric representations

Motivated by recent experimental progress in the context of ultra-cold multi-color fermionic atoms in optical lattices, we have developed a method to exactly diagonalize the Heisenberg $SU(N)$ Hamiltonian with several particles per site living in a fully symmetric or antisymmetric representation of $SU(N)$. The method, based on the use of standard Young tableaux, takes advantage of the full $SU(N)$ symmetry, allowing one to work directly in each irreducible representations of the global $SU(N)$ group. Since the $SU(N)$ singlet sector is often much smaller than the full Hilbert space, this enables one to reach much larger system sizes than with conventional exact diagonalizations. The method is applied to the study of Heisenberg chains in the symmetric representation with two and three particles per site up to $N=10$ and up to 20 sites. For the length scales accessible to this approach, all systems except the Haldane chain ($SU(2)$ with two particles per site) appear to be gapless, and the central charge and scaling dimensions extracted from the results are consistent with a critical behaviour in the $SU(N)$ level $k$ Wess-Zumino-Witten universality class, where $k$ is the number of particles per site. These results point to the existence of a cross-over between this universality class and the asymptotic low-energy behavior with a gapped spectrum or a critical behavior in the $SU(N)$ level $1$ WZW universality class.

Disorder driven spin-orbital liquid behaviour in the Ba$_3$XSb$_2$O$_9$ materials

Recent experiments on the Ba$_3$XSb$_2$O$_9$ family have revealed materials that potentially realise spin- and spin-orbital liquid physics. However, the lattice structure of these materials is complicated due to the presence of charged X$^{2+}$-Sb$^{5+}$ dumbbells, with two possible orientations. To model the lattice structure, we consider a frustrated model of charged dumbbells on the triangular lattice, with long-range Coulomb interactions. We study this model using Monte Carlo simulation, and find a freezing temperature, $T_{\sf frz}$, at which the simulated structure factor matches well to low-temperature x-ray diffraction data for Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$. At $T=T_{\sf frz}$ we find a complicated ``branching'' structure of superexchange-linked X$^{2+}$ clusters, and show that this gives a natural explanation for the presence of orphan spins. Finally we provide a plausible mechanism by which such dumbbell disorder can promote a spin-orbital resonant state with delocalised orphan spins.

Exploring the spin-orbital ground state of Ba3CuSb2O9

Motivated by the absence of both spin freezing and a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect at the lowest measured temperatures, we study the ground state of Ba3CuSb2O9. We solve a general spin-orbital model on both the honeycomb and the decorated honeycomb lattice, revealing rich phase diagrams. The spin-orbital model on the honeycomb lattice contains an SU(4) point, where previous studies have shown the existence of a spin-orbital liquid with algebraically decaying correlations. For realistic parameters on the decorated honeycomb lattice, we find a phase that consists of clusters of nearest-neighbour spin singlets, which can be understood in terms of dimer coverings of an emergent square lattice. While the experimental situation is complicated by structural disorder, we show qualitative agreement between our theory and a range of experiments.

Exact ground states of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice in a magnetic field

Exact ground states of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings are found by two independent rigorous procedures. The first method uses a unitary transformation to establish a mapping correspondence with an effective classical spin model, while the second method relies on the derivation of an effective hard-core boson model by continuous unitary transformations. Both methods lead to equivalent effective Hamiltonians providing a convincing proof that the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice exhibits a zero-temperature magnetization curve with just two intermediate plateaus at one-third and one-half of the saturation magnetization, which correspond to stripe and checkerboard orderings of singlets and polarized triplets, respectively. The nature of the remarkable stripe order relevant to the one-third plateau is thoroughly investigated with the help of the corresponding exact eigenvector. The rigorous results for the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are compared with the analogous results for the purely classical Ising and fully quantum Heisenberg models. Finally, we discuss to what extent the critical fields of SrCu2(BO3)2 and (CuCl)Ca2Nb3O10 can be described within the suggested Ising-Heisenberg model.

Exact Diagonalization of Heisenberg SU(N) models

Building on advanced results on permutations, we show that it is possible to construct, for each irreducible representation of SU(N), an orthonormal basis labelled by the set of {\it standard Young tableaux} in which the matrix of the Heisenberg SU(N) model (the quantum permutation of N-color objects) takes an explicit and extremely simple form. Since the relative dimension of the full Hilbert space to that of the singlet space on $n$ sites increases very fast with N, this formulation allows to extend exact diagonalizations of finite clusters to much larger values of N than accessible so far. Using this method, we show that, on the square lattice, there is long-range color order for SU(5), spontaneous dimerization for SU(8), and evidence in favor of a quantum liquid for SU(10).

Crystals of bound states in the magnetization plateaus of the Shastry-Sutherland model

Using infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS), we show that the Shastry-Sutherland model in an external magnetic field has low-magnetization plateaus which, in contrast to previous predictions, correspond to crystals of bound states of triplets, and {\it not} to crystals of triplets. The first sizable plateaus appear at magnetization 1/8, 2/15 and 1/6, in agreement with experiments on the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, and they can be naturally understood as regular patterns of bound states, including the intriguing 2/15 one. We also show that, even in a confined geometry, two triplets bind into a {\it localized} bound state with $S_z=2$. Finally, we discuss the role of competing domain-wall and supersolid phases as well as that of additional anisotropic interactions.

Intermediate magnetization plateaus in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg models on two-dimensional triangulated lattices

The ground state and zero-temperature magnetization process of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two-dimensional triangles-in-triangles lattices is exactly calculated using eigenstates of the smallest commuting spin clusters. Our ground-state analysis of the investigated classical--quantum spin model reveals three unconventional dimerized or trimerized quantum ground states besides two classical ground states. It is demonstrated that the spin frustration is responsible for a variety of magnetization scenarios with up to three or four intermediate magnetization plateaus of either quantum or classical nature. The exact analytical results for the Ising-Heisenberg model are confronted with the corresponding results for the purely quantum Heisenberg model, which were obtained by numerical exact diagonalizations based on the Lanczos algorithm for finite-size spin clusters of 24 and 21 sites, respectively. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization process of both models is quite reminiscent and hence, one may obtain some insight into the ground states of the quantum Heisenberg model from the rigorous results for the Ising-Heisenberg model even though exact ground states for the Ising-Heisenberg model do not represent true ground states for the pure quantum Heisenberg model.

Exact Ground States of Frustrated Spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg Ladders in a Magnetic Field

Ground states of the frustrated spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg two-leg ladder with Heisenberg intra-rung coupling and only Ising interaction along legs and diagonals are rigorously found by taking advantage of local conservation of the total spin on each rung. The constructed ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg ladder is then compared with the analogous phase diagram of the fully quantum spin-1 Heisenberg two-leg ladder obtained by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. It is demonstrated that both investigated spin models exhibit quite similar magnetization scenarios, which involve intermediate plateaux at one-quarter, one-half and three-quarters of the saturation magnetization.

Incomplete devil's staircase in the magnetization curve of SrCu2(BO3)2

We report on NMR and torque measurements on the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin-dimer system SrCu2(BO3)2 in magnetic fields up to 34 T that reveal a sequence of magnetization plateaus at 1/8, 2/15, 1/6, and 1/4 of the saturation and two incommensurate phases below and above the 1/6 plateau. The magnetic structures determined by NMR involve a stripe order of triplets in all plateaus, suggesting that the incommensurate phases originate from proliferation of domain walls. We propose that the magnetization process of SrCu2(BO3)2 is best described as an incomplete devil's staircase.
