Workshop Summary

Recent progress in understanding the physics of B mesons and of CP violation, as presented to this Workshop, is put in historical perspective and summarized.

The Determination of the CKM Matrix

A general discussion of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix is given and the importance stressed of determining the matrix elements as an essential part of understanding CP violation in and beyond the Standard Model. The status of knowledge of the matrix elements connecting the first and second generation quarks is reviewed. A perspective on determinations of the full CKM matrix is presented as an introduction to the separate contributions to the panel discussion that follows.

K_{L,S} \to ππν\barν Decays Within and Beyond the Standard Model

The decays K_{L,S} -> π^o π^o ν\barν and K_{L,S} -> π^+ π^- ν\barν involve the weak transition from a strange to a non-strange quark. Although they have considerably smaller branching ratios than those for the corresponding rare processes involving single pions, some may be more distinguishable experimentally from background processes and thus could provide another probe of the s -> d ν\barν transition. Using recent knowledge of the CKM matrix elements and measurements of related processes, we give improved predictions for their branching ratios both within and beyond the Standard Model.

The Future of K Physics

We discuss the opportunities for experiments at the frontier of physics using K-meson beams after the current round of precision experiments looking for CP violation in the K meson decay amplitude and for flavor-changing neutral currents are completed and the B-factories at KEK and SLAC are running. We emphasize those experiments that will give complementary information on the parameters of the Standard Model, especially the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements, and on possible physics beyond the Standard Model.
