Deformations of associative submanifolds with boundary

Let $M$ be a topological $G_2$-manifold. We prove that the space of infinitesimal associative deformations of a compact associative submanifold $Y$ with boundary in a coassociative submanifold $X$ is the solution space of an elliptic problem. For a connected boundary $\partial Y$ of genus $g$, the index is given by $\int_{\partial Y}c_1(ν_X)+1-g$, where $ν_X$ denotes the orthogonal complement of $T\partial Y$ in $TX_{|\partial Y}$ and $c_1(ν_X)$ the first Chern class of $ν_X$ with respect to its natural complex structure. Further, we exhibit explicit examples of non-trivial index.

Special metrics and Triality

We investigate a new 8-dimensional Riemannian geometry defined by a generic closed and coclosed 3-form with stabiliser PSU(3), and which arises as a critical point of Hitchin's variational principle. We give a Riemannian characterisation of this structure in terms of invariant spinor-valued 1-forms, which are harmonic with respect to the twisted Dirac operator $\Db$ on $Δ\otimesΛ^1$. We establish various obstructions to the existence of topological reductions to PSU(3). For compact manifolds, we also give sufficient conditions for topological PSU(3)-structures that can be lifted to topological SU(3)-structures. We also construct the first known compact example of an integrable non-symmetric PSU(3)-structure. In the same vein, we give a new Riemannian characterisation for topological quaternionic Kähler structures which are defined by an $Sp(1)\cdot Sp(2)$-invariant self-dual 4-form. Again, we show that this form is closed if and only if the corresponding spinor-valued 1-form is harmonic for $\Db$ and that these equivalent conditions produce constraints on the Ricci tensor.

Calibrated cycles and T-duality

For Hitchin's generalised geometries we introduce and analyse the concept of a structured submanifold which encapsulates the classical notion of a calibrated submanifold. Under a suitable integrability condition on the ambient geometry, these generalised calibrated cycles minimise a functional occurring as D-brane energy in type II string theories, involving both so-called NS-NS- and R-R-fields. Further, we investigate the behaviour of calibrated cycles under T-duality and construct non-trivial examples.

Calibrations on spaces with GxG-structure

In these notes we give an introduction to the concept of spaces with GxG-structure and their structured submanifolds. These objects generalise the classical notion of a calibrated submanifold. Therefore, they are interesting from a string theory viewpoint as they are relevant to describe D-branes in string compactifications on backgrounds with fluxes.

Special metric structures and closed forms

The primary aim of this thesis is to investigate metrics which are induced by a differential form and arise as a critical point of Hitchin's variational principle. Firstly, we investigate metrics associated with the structure group PSU(3) acting in its adjoint representation. We derive various obstructions to the existence of a topological reduction to PSU(3). For compact manifolds, we also find sufficient conditions if the PSU(3)-structure lifts to an SU(3)-structure. We give a Riemannian characterisation of topological PSU(3)-structures through an invariant spinor valued 1-form and show that the PSU(3)-structure is integrable if and only if the spinor valued 1-form defines a co-closed Rarita-Schwinger field. Moreover, we construct non-symmetric (compact) examples. Secondly, we consider even or odd forms which can be naturally interpreted as spinors for a spin structure on $T\oplus T^*$. As such, the forms we consider induce a reduction from $Spin(7,7)$ to $G_2\times G_2$. We give a topological classification of $G_2\times G_2$-structures. We prove that the condition for being a critical point is equivalent to the supersymmetry equations on spinors in supergravity theory of type IIA/B with NS-NS background fields. Examples are systematically constructed by the device of T-duality.

Generalised $G_2$-manifolds

We define new Riemannian structures on 7-manifolds by a differential form of mixed degree which is the critical point of a (possibly constrained) variational problem over a fixed cohomology class. The unconstrained critical points generalise the notion of a manifold of holonomy $G_2$, while the constrained ones give rise to a new geometry without a classical counterpart. We characterise these structures by the means of spinors and show the integrability conditions to be equivalent to the supersymmetry equations on spinors in supergravity theory of type IIA/B with bosonic background fields. In particular, this geometry can be described by two linear metric connections with skew torsion. Finally, we construct explicit examples by using the device of T-duality.

Generalised $G_2$-structures and type IIB superstrings

The recent mathematical literature introduces generalised geometries which are defined by a reduction from the structure group $SO(d,d)$ of the vector bundle $T^d\oplus T^{d*}$ to a special subgroup. In this article we show that compactification of IIB superstring vacua on 7-manifolds with two covariantly constant spinors leads to a generalised $G_2$-structure associated with a reduction from SO(7,7) to $G_2\times G_2$. We also consider compactifications on 6-manifolds where analogously we obtain a generalised SU(3)-structure associated with $SU(3)\times SU(3)$, and show how these relate to generalised $G_2$-structures.

Conformal properties of harmonic spinors and lightlike geodesics in signature $(1,1)$

We are studying the harmonic and twistor equation on Lorentzian surfaces, that is a two dimensional orientable manifold with a metric of signature $(1,1)$. We will investigate the properties of the solutions of these equations and try to relate the conformal invariant dimension of the space of harmonic and twistor spinors to the natural conformal invariants given by the Lorentzian metric. We will introduce the notion of semi-conformally flat surfaces and establish a complete classification of the possible dimensions for this family.
