Conformal Field Theory at the Lattice Level: Discrete Complex Analysis and Virasoro Structure

Critical statistical mechanics and Conformal Field Theory (CFT) are conjecturally connected since the seminal work of Beliavin, Polyakov, and Zamolodchikov [BPZ84a]. Both exhibit exactly solvable structures in two dimensions. A long-standing question [ItTh87] concerns whether there is a direct link between these structures, that is, whether the Virasoro algebra representations of CFT, the distinctive feature of CFT in two dimensions, can be found within lattice models of statistical mechanics. We give a positive answer to this question for the discrete Gaussian free field and for the Ising model, by connecting the structures of discrete complex analysis in the lattice models with the Virasoro symmetry that is expected to describe their scaling limits. This allows for a tight connection of a number of objects from the lattice model world and the field theory one. In particular, our results link the CFT local fields with lattice local fields introduced in [GHP19] and the probabilistic formulation of the lattice model with the continuum correlation functions. Our construction is a decisive step towards establishing the conjectured correspondence between the correlation functions of the CFT fields and those of the lattice local fields. In particular, together with the upcoming [CHI19], our construction will complete the picture initiated in [HoSm13, Hon12, CHI15], where a number of conjectures relating specific Ising lattice fields and CFT correlations were proven.

Scaling limit of the loop-erased random walk Green's function

We consider loop-erased random walk (LERW) running between two boundary points of a square grid approximation of a planar simply connected domain. The LERW Green's function is the probability that the LERW passes through a given edge in the domain. We prove that this probability, multiplied by the inverse mesh size to the power 3/4, converges in the lattice size scaling limit to (a constant times) an explicit conformally covariant quantity which coincides with the SLE(2) Green's function. The proof does not use SLE techniques and is based on a combinatorial identity which reduces the problem to obtaining sharp asymptotics for two quantities: the loop measure of random walk loops of odd winding number about a branch point near the marked edge and a "spinor" observable for random walk started from one of the vertices of the marked edge.

A Dimension Spectrum for SLE Boundary Collisions

We consider chordal SLE(kappa) curves for kappa > 4, where the intersection of the curve with the boundary is a random fractal of almost sure Hausdorff dimension min {2-8/kappa,1}. We study the random sets of points at which the curve collides with the real line at a specified "angle" and compute an almost sure dimension spectrum describing the metric size of these sets. We work with the forward SLE flow and a key tool in the analysis is Girsanov's theorem, which is used to study events on which moments concentrate. The two-point correlation estimates are proved using the direct method.

Convergence rates for loop-erased random walk and other Loewner curves

We estimate convergence rates for curves generated by Loewner's differential equation under the basic assumption that a convergence rate for the driving terms is known. An important tool is what we call the tip structure modulus, a geometric measure of regularity for Loewner curves parameterized by capacity. It is analogous to Warschawski's boundary structure modulus and closely related to annuli crossings. The main application we have in mind is that of a random discrete-model curve approaching a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve in the lattice size scaling limit. We carry out the approach in the case of loop-erased random walk (LERW) in a simply connected domain. Under mild assumptions of boundary regularity, we obtain an explicit power-law rate for the convergence of the LERW path toward the radial SLE$_2$ path in the supremum norm, the curves being parameterized by capacity. On the deterministic side, we show that the tip structure modulus gives a sufficient geometric condition for a Loewner curve to be Hölder continuous in the capacity parameterization, assuming its driving term is Hölder continuous. We also briefly discuss the case when the curves are a priori known to be Hölder continuous in the capacity parameterization and we obtain a power-law convergence rate depending only on the regularity of the curves.

Small particle limits in a regularized Laplacian random growth model

We study a regularized version of Hastings-Levitov planar random growth that models clusters formed by the aggregation of diffusing particles. In this model, the growing clusters are defined in terms of iterated slit maps whose capacities are given by c_n=c|Φ_{n-1}'(e^{σ+iθ_n})|^{-α}, α\geq 0, where c>0 is the capacity of the first particle, {Φ_n}_n are the composed conformal maps defining the clusters of the evolution, {θ_n}_n are independent uniform angles determining the positions at which particles are attached, and σ>0 is a regularization parameter which we take to depend on c. We prove that under an appropriate rescaling of time, in the limit as c converges to 0, the clusters converge to growing disks with deterministic capacities, provided that σdoes not converge to 0 too fast. We then establish scaling limits for the harmonic measure flow, showing that by letting αtend to 0 at different rates it converges to either the Brownian web on the circle, a stopped version of the Brownian web on the circle, or the identity map. As the harmonic measure flow is closely related to the internal branching structure within the cluster, the above three cases intuitively correspond to the number of infinite branches in the model being either 1, a random number whose distribution we obtain, or unbounded, in the limit as c converges to 0. We also present several findings based on simulations of the model with parameter choices not covered by our rigorous analysis.

On the rate of convergence of loop-erased random walk to SLE(2)

We derive a rate of convergence of the Loewner driving function for planar loop-erased random walk to Brownian motion with speed 2 on the unit circle, the Loewner driving function for radial SLE(2). The proof uses a new estimate of the difference between the discrete and continuous Green's functions that is an improvement over existing results for the class of domains we consider. Using the rate for the driving process convergence along with additional information about SLE(2), we also obtain a rate of convergence for the paths with respect to the Hausdorff distance.

On the Continuity of SLE(κ) in κ

We prove that for almost every Brownian motion sample, the corresponding SLE(κ) curves parameterized by capacity exist and change continuously in the supremum norm when κvaries in the interval [0,κ_0), where κ_0=8(2-\sqrt{3})=2.143... We estimate the κ-dependent modulus of continuity of the curves and also give an estimate on the modulus of continuity for the supremum norm change with κ.

Some remarks on SLE bubbles and Schramm's two-point observable

Simmons and Cardy recently predicted a formula for the probability that the chordal SLE(8/3) path passes to the left of two points in the upper half-plane. In this paper we give a rigorous proof of their formula. Starting from this result, we derive explicit expressions for several natural connectivity functions for SLE(8/3) bubbles conditioned to be of macroscopic size. By passing to a limit with such a bubble we construct a certain chordal restriction measure and in this way obtain a proof of a formula for the probability that two given points are between two commuting SLE(8/3) paths. The one-point version of this result has been predicted by Gamsa and Cardy. Finally, we derive an integral formula for the second moment of the area of an SLE(8/3) bubble conditioned to have radius 1. We evaluate the area integral numerically and relate its value to a hypothesis that the area follows the Airy distribution.

Almost sure multifractal spectrum for the tip of an SLE curve

The tip multifractal spectrum of a two-dimensional curve is one way to describe the behavior of the uniformizing conformal map of the complement near the tip. We give the tip multifractal spectrum for a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve, we prove that the spectrum is valid with probability one, and we give applications to the scaling of harmonic measure at the tip.
