Spherical subgroups in reductive algebraic groups

In a paper from 2015, we determined all spherical affine homogeneous varieties for simple algebraic groups in arbitrary characteristic. The present paper extends this classification to semisimple groups. This generalizes work done independently by Brion and Mikityuk in characteristic zero. Our primary approach relies on a lifting lemma to characteristic zero, enabling us to directly apply Brion's and Mikityuk's results.

Classification of multiplicity free symplectic representations

Let G be a connected reductive group acting on a finite dimensional vector space V. Assume that V is equipped with a G-invariant symplectic form. Then the ring C[V] of polynomial functions becomes a Poisson algebra. The ring C[V]^G of invariants is a sub-Poisson algebra. We call V multiplicity free if C[V]^G is Poisson commutative, i.e., if {f,g}=0 for all invariants f and g. Alternatively, G also acts on the Weyl algebra W(V) and V is multiplicity free if and only if the subalgebra W(V)^G of invariants is commutative. In this paper we classify all multiplicity free symplectic representations.

On the fundamental group of a spherical variety

Let $X=G/H$ be a spherical variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge0$. We compute the $p'$-parts of $\pi_0(H)$ and $\pi_1(X)$ from the spherical system of $X$.

(Quasi-)Hamiltonian manifolds of cohomogeneity one

We classify compact, connected Hamiltonian and quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds of cohomogeneity one (which is the same as being multiplicity free of rank one). Here the group acting is a compact connected Lie group (simply connected in the quasi-Hamiltonian case). This work is a concretization of the more general classification (arXiv:1612.03843) of multiplicity free manifolds in the special case of rank one. As a result we obtain numerous new concrete examples of multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds or, equivalently, Hamiltonian loop group actions.

Classification of multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds

A quasi-Hamiltonian manifold is called multiplicity free if all of its symplectic reductions are 0-dimensional. In this paper, we classify compact, multiplicity free, twisted quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds for simply connected, compact Lie groups. Thereby, we recover old and find new examples of these structures.

Multiplicities and dimensions in enveloping tensor categories

In the previous paper arxiv:math/0610552 semisimple tensor categories were constructed out of certain regular Mal'cev categories. In this paper, we calculate the tensor product multiplicities and the categorical dimensions of the simple objects. This yields also the Grothendieck ring. The main tool is the subquotient decomposition of the basic objects.

The subobject decomposition in enveloping tensor categories

To every regular category $\mathcal{A}$ equipped with a degree function $δ$ one can attach a pseudo-abelian tensor category $\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{A},δ)$. We show that the generating objects of $\mathcal{T}$ decompose canonically as a direct sum. In this paper we calculate morphisms, compositions of morphisms and tensor products of the summands. As a special case we recover the original construction of Deligne's category $\operatorname{Rep} S_t$.

Plancherel theory for real spherical spaces: Construction of the Bernstein morphisms

Given a unimodular real spherical space $Z=G/H$ we construct for each boundary degeneration $Z_I=G/H_I$ of $Z$ a Bernstein morphism $B_I: L^2(Z_I)_{\rm disc }\to L^2(Z)$. We show that $B:=\bigoplus_I B_I$ provides an isospectral $G$-equivariant morphism onto $L^2(Z)$. Further, the maps $B_I$ are finite linear combinations of orthogonal projections which translates in the known cases where $Z$ is a group or a symmetric space into the familiar Maass-Selberg relations. As a corollary we obtain that $L^2(Z)_{\rm disc }\neq \emptyset$ provided that ${\mathfrak h}^\perp$ contains elliptic elements in its interior.

Complexity of actions over perfect fields

Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a perfect field $k$ acting on an algebraic variety $X$ and let $P$ be a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$. For $k$-spherical $G$-varieties we prove finiteness result for $P$-orbits that contain $k$-points. This is a consequence of an equality on $P$-complexities of $X$ and of any $P$-invariant $k$-dense subvariety in $X$, which generalizes a corresponding result of E.B.Vinberg in the case of algebraically closed field $k$. Also we introduce an action of the restricted Weyl group $W$ on the set of $k$-dense $P$-invariant closed subvarieties of $X$ of maximal $P$-complexity and $k$-rank in the case of ${\rm char}\ k =0$ and on the set of all $k$-dense $P$-orbits in the case of real spherical variety which generalizes the action on $B$-orbits introduced by F.Knop in the algebraically closed field case. We also introduce a little Weyl group related with this action and describe its generators in terms of the generators of $W$ which generalize the description of M.Brion in algebraically closed field case.

Functoriality properties of the dual group

Let $G$ be a connected reductive group. In a previous paper, arxiv:1702.08264, is was shown that the dual group $G^\vee_X$ attached to a $G$-variety $X$ admits a natural homomorphism with finite kernel to the Langlands dual group $G^\vee$ of $G$. Here, we prove that the dual group is functorial in the following sense: if there is a dominant $G$-morphism $X\to Y$ or an injective $G$-morphism $Y\to X$ then there is a canonical homomorphism $G^\vee_Y\to G^\vee_X$ which is compatible with the homomorphisms to $G^\vee$.

Classification of reductive real spherical pairs II. The semisimple case

If ${\mathfrak g}$ is a real reductive Lie algebra and ${\mathfrak h} < {\mathfrak g}$ is a subalgebra, then $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ is called real spherical provided that ${\mathfrak g} = {\mathfrak h} + {\mathfrak p}$ for some choice of a minimal parabolic subalgebra ${\mathfrak p} \subset {\mathfrak g}$. In this paper we classify all real spherical pairs $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ where ${\mathfrak g}$ is semi-simple but not simple and ${\mathfrak h}$ is a reductive real algebraic subalgebra. The paper is based on the classification of the case where ${\mathfrak g}$ is simple (see arXiv:1609.00963) and generalizes the results of Brion and Mikityuk in the (complex) spherical case.

Classification of reductive real spherical pairs I. The simple case

This paper gives a classification of all pairs $(\mathfrak g, \mathfrak h)$ with $\mathfrak g$ a simple real Lie algebra and $\mathfrak h < \mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra for which there exists a minimal parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak p < \mathfrak g$ such that $\mathfrak g = \mathfrak h + \mathfrak p$ as vector sum.

The tempered spectrum of a real spherical space

Let G/H be a unimodular real spherical space which is either absolutely spherical or wave-front. It is shown that every tempered representation of G/H embeds into a relative discrete series of a boundary degeneration of G/H. If in addition G/H is of wave-front type it follows that the tempered representation is parabolically induced from a discrete series representation of a lower dimensional real spherical space. Final version. To appear in Acta Math.

The dual group of a spherical variety

Let $X$ be a spherical variety for a connected reductive group $G$. Work of Gaitsgory-Nadler strongly suggests that the Langlands dual group $G^\vee$ of $G$ has a subgroup whose Weyl group is the little Weyl group of $X$. Sakellaridis-Venkatesh defined a refined dual group $G^\vee_X$ and verified in many cases that there exists an isogeny $ϕ$ from $G^\vee_X$ to $G^\vee$. In this paper, we establish the existence of $ϕ$ in full generality. Our approach is purely combinatorial and works (despite the title) for arbitrary $G$-varieties.

Multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds

A (quasi-)Hamiltonian manifold is called multiplicity free if all of its symplectic reductions are 0-dimensional. In this paper, we classify multiplicity free Hamiltonian actions for (twisted) loop groups or, equivalently, multiplicity free (twisted) quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds for simply connected compact Lie groups. As a result we recover old and find new examples of these structures.

Reductive group actions

In this paper, we study rationality properties of reductive group actions which are defined over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. Thereby, we unify Luna's theory of spherical systems and Borel-Tits' theory of reductive groups. In particular, we define for any reductive group action a generalized Tits index whose main constituents are a root system and a generalization of the anisotropic kernel. The index controls to a large extent the behavior at infinity (i.e., embeddings). For k-spherical varieties (i.e., where a minimal parabolic has an open orbit) we obtain explicit (wonderful) completions of the set of rational points. For local fields this means honest compactifications generalizing the maximal Satake compactification of a symmetric space. Our main tool is a k-version of the local structure theorem.
