Excitation of control-affine systems and Koopman error bounds

The Koopman operator and extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD) as a data-driven technique for its approximation have attracted considerable attention as a key tool for modeling, analysis, and control of complex dynamical systems. However, extensions towards control-affine systems resulting in bilinear surrogate models are prone to demanding data requirements rendering their applicability intricate. In this paper, we propose a framework for data-fitting of control-affine mappings to increase the robustness margin in the associated system identification problem and, thus, to provide reliable bilinear EDMD schemes. In particular, guidelines for input selection based on subspace angles are deduced such that a desired threshold with respect to the minimal singular value is ensured. Moreover, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality for maximizing the minimal singular value. Further, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach using bilinear EDMD with control for nonholonomic robots.

Koopman for stochastic dynamics: error bounds for kernel extended dynamic mode decomposition

We prove $L^\infty$-error bounds for kernel extended dynamic mode decomposition (kEDMD) approximants of the Koopman operator for stochastic dynamical systems. To this end, we establish Koopman invariance of suitably chosen reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and provide an in-depth analysis of the pointwise error in terms of the data points. The latter is split into two parts by showing that kEDMD for stochastic systems involves a kernel regression step leading to a deterministic error in the fill distance as well as Monte Carlo sampling to approximate unknown expected values yielding a probabilistic error in terms of the number of samples. We illustrate the derived bounds by means of Langevin-type stochastic differential equations involving a nonlinear double-well potential.

On non-negative operators in Krein spaces and their perturbations

One of the most important contributions of Heinz Langer in the area of operator theory in Krein spaces is the introduction of the notion of definitizable operators and the construction of the corresponding spectral function. In this note we obtain a new characterization for the subclass of non-negative operators in Krein spaces which is based on local sign type properties of the spectrum and growth conditions on the resolvent. Based on these local properties, a notion of local non-negativity for self-adjoint operators in Krein spaces is defined and it is shown that such classes of operators appear naturally as perturbations of non-negative operators.

Kernel-based Koopman approximants for control: Flexible sampling, error analysis, and stability

Data-driven techniques for analysis, modeling, and control of complex dynamical systems are on the uptake. Koopman theory provides the theoretical foundation for the popular kernel extended dynamic mode decomposition (kEDMD). In this work, we propose a novel kEDMD scheme to approximate nonlinear control systems accompanied by an in-depth error analysis. Key features are regularization-based robustness and an adroit decomposition into micro and macro grids enabling flexible sampling. But foremost, we prove proportionality, i.e., explicit dependence on the distance to the (controlled) equilibrium, of the derived bound on the full approximation error. Leveraging this key property, we rigorously show that asymptotic stability of the data-driven surrogate (control) system implies asymptotic stability of the original (control) system and vice versa.

Group-Convolutional Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition

This paper explores the integration of symmetries into the Koopman-operator framework for the analysis and efficient learning of equivariant dynamical systems using a group-convolutional approach. Approximating the Koopman operator by finite-dimensional surrogates, e.g., via extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD), is challenging for high-dimensional systems due to computational constraints. To tackle this problem with a particular focus on EDMD, we demonstrate -- under suitable equivarance assumptions on the system and the observables -- that the optimal EDMD matrix is equivariant. That is, its action on states can be described by group convolutions and the generalized Fourier transform. We show that this structural property has many advantages for equivariant systems, in particular, that it allows for data-efficient learning, fast predictions and fast eigenfunction approximations. We conduct numerical experiments on the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and a $λ$-$ω$ spiraling wave system, both nonlinear partial differential equations, providing evidence of the effectiveness of this approach, and highlighting its potential for broader applications in dynamical systems analysis.

On Differential-Algebraic Equations with Bounded Spectrum in Banach Spaces

The Weierstraß form for regular DAEs in finite dimensions decouples a linear DAE into an ODE and the nilpotent part of the underlying pencil. Here, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the possibility of such a decomposition in the case of DAEs in Banach spaces. Moreover, we consider the larger class of linear operator pencils with bounded spectra and show that the associated homogeneous DAE can be reduced to an ODE and a seemingly simple DAE of the form $\frac d{dt}Tx = x$ with a quasi-nilpotent operator $T$. As examples show, there are cases with only the trivial solution and others with non-trivial solutions. We characterize the existence of $L^\infty$-solutions on the half-axis, $L^2$-solutions on compact time intervals, and analytic solutions.

$L^\infty$-error bounds for approximations of the Koopman operator by kernel extended dynamic mode decomposition

Extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD) is a well-established method to generate a data-driven approximation of the Koopman operator for analysis and prediction of nonlinear dynamical systems. Recently, kernel EDMD (kEDMD) has gained popularity due to its ability to resolve the challenging task of choosing a suitable dictionary by using the kernel's canonical features and, thus, data-informed observables. In this paper, we provide the first pointwise bounds on the approximation error of kEDMD. The main idea consists of two steps. First, we show that the reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of Wendland functions are invariant under the Koopman operator. Second, exploiting that the learning problem given by regression in the native norm can be recast as an interpolation problem, we prove our novel error bounds by using interpolation estimates. Finally, we validate our findings with numerical experiments.

Representing the dissipation of infinite-dimensional linear port-Hamiltonian systems

It is well known that linear and non-linear dissipative port-Hamiltonian systems in finite dimensions admit an energy balance, relating the energy increase in the system with the supplied energy and the dissipated energy. The integrand in the dissipation term is then a function of the state variable. In this note, we answer the question of when this is possible for linear port-Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimensions.

Variance representations and convergence rates for data-driven approximations of Koopman operators

We rigorously derive novel error bounds for extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD) to approximate the Koopman operator for discrete- and continuous time (stochastic) systems; both for i.i.d. and ergodic sampling under non-restrictive assumptions. We show exponential convergence rates for i.i.d. sampling and provide the first superlinear convergence rates for ergodic sampling of deterministic systems. The proofs are based on novel exact variance representations for the empirical estimators of mass and stiffness matrix. Moreover, we verify the accuracy of the derived error bounds and convergence rates by means of numerical simulations for highly-complex dynamical systems including a nonlinear partial differential equation.
