On efficient weighted integration via a change of variables

In this paper, we study the approximation of $d$-dimensional $ρ$-weighted integrals over unbounded domains $\mathbb{R}_+^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$ using a special change of variables, so that quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) or sparse grid rules can be applied to the transformed integrands over the unit cube. We consider a class of integrands with bounded $L_p$ norm of mixed partial derivatives of first order, where $p\in[1,+\infty].$ The main results give sufficient conditions on the change of variables $ν$ which guarantee that the transformed integrand belongs to the standard Sobolev space of functions over the unit cube with mixed smoothness of order one. These conditions depend on $ρ$ and $p$. The proposed change of variables is in general different than the standard change based on the inverse of the cumulative distribution function. We stress that the standard change of variables leads to integrands over a cube; however, those integrands have singularities which make the application of QMC and sparse grids ineffective. Our conclusions are supported by numerical experiments.

Digital nets in dimension two with the optimal order of $L_p$ discrepancy

We study the $L_p$ discrepancy of two-dimensional digital nets for finite $p$. In the year 2001 Larcher and Pillichshammer identified a class of digital nets for which the symmetrized version in the sense of Davenport has $L_2$ discrepancy of the order $\sqrt{\log N}/N$, which is best possible due to the celebrated result of Roth. However, it remained open whether this discrepancy bound also holds for the original digital nets without any modification. In the present paper we identify nets from the above mentioned class for which the symmetrization is not necessary in order to achieve the optimal order of $L_p$ discrepancy for all $p \in [1,\infty)$. Our findings are in the spirit of a paper by Bilyk from 2013, who considered the $L_2$ discrepancy of lattices consisting of the elements $(k/N,\{k α\})$ for $k=0,1,\ldots,N-1$, and who gave Diophantine properties of $α$ which guarantee the optimal order of $L_2$ discrepancy.

Metrical star discrepancy bounds for lacunary subsequences of digital Kronecker-sequences and polynomial tractability

The star discrepancy $D_N^*(\mathcal{P})$ is a quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution of a finite point set $\mathcal{P}$ in the multi-dimensional unit cube which is intimately related to the integration error of quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms. It is known that for every integer $N \ge 2$ there are point sets $\mathcal{P}$ in $[0,1)^d$ with $|\mathcal{P}|=N$ and $D_N^*(\mathcal{P}) =O((\log N)^{d-1}/N)$. However, for small $N$ compared to the dimension $d$ this asymptotically excellent bound is useless (e.g. for $N \le {\rm e}^{d-1}$). In 2001 it has been shown by Heinrich, Novak, Wasilkowski and Woźniakowski that for every integer $N \ge 2$ there exist point sets $\mathcal{P}$ in $[0,1)^d$ with $|\mathcal{P}|=N$ and $D_N^*(\mathcal{P}) \le C \sqrt{d/N}$. Although not optimal in an asymptotic sense in $N$, this upper bound has a much better (and even optimal) dependence on the dimension $d$. Unfortunately the result by Heinrich et al. and also later variants thereof by other authors are pure existence results and until now no explicit construction of point sets with the above properties are known. Quite recently Löbbe studied lacunary subsequences of Kronecker's $(n \boldsymbolα)$-sequence and showed a metrical discrepancy bound of the form $C \sqrt{d (\log d)/N}$ with implied absolute constant $C>0$ independent of $N$ and $d$. In this paper we show a corresponding result for digital Kronecker sequences, which are a non-archimedean analog of classical Kronecker sequences.

Tractability properties of the weighted star discrepancy of the Halton sequence

We study the weighted star discrepancy of the Halton sequence. In particular, we show that the Halton sequence achieves strong polynomial tractability for the weighted star discrepancy for product weights $(γ_j)_{j \ge 1}$ under the mildest condition on the weight sequence known so far for explicitly constructive sequences. The condition requires $\sup_{d \ge 1} \max_{\emptyset \not= \mathfrak{u} \subseteq [d]} \prod_{j \in \mathfrak{u}} (j γ_j) < \infty$. The same result holds for Niederreiter sequences and for other types of digital sequences. Our results are true also for the weighted unanchored discrepancy.

Digital net properties of a polynomial analogue of Frolov's construction

Frolov's cubature formula on the unit hypercube has been considered important since it attains an optimal rate of convergence for various function spaces. Its integration nodes are given by shrinking a suitable full rank $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and taking all points inside the unit cube. The main drawback of these nodes is that they are hard to find computationally, especially in high dimensions. In such situations, quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) rules based on digital nets have proven to be successful. However, there is still no construction known that leads to QMC rules which are optimal in the same generality as Frolov's. In this paper we investigate a polynomial analog of Frolov's cubature formula, which we expect to be important in this respect. This analog is defined in a field of Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field. A similar approach was previously studied in [M.~B.~Levin. Adelic constructions of low discrepancy sequences. Online Journal of Analytic Combinatorics. Issue 5, 2010.]. We show that our construction is a $(t,m,d)$-net, which also implies bounds on its star-discrepancy and the error of the corresponding cubature rule. Moreover, we show that our cubature rule is a QMC rule, whereas Frolov's is not, and provide an algorithm to determine its integration nodes explicitly. To this end we need to extend the notion of $(t,m,d)$-nets to fit the situation that the points can have infinite digit expansion and develop a duality theory. Additionally, we adapt the notion of admissible lattices to our setting and prove its significance.

On the optimal order of integration in Hermite spaces with finite smoothness

We study the numerical approximation of integrals over $\mathbb{R}^s$ with respect to the standard Gaussian measure for integrands which lie in certain Hermite spaces of functions. The decay rate of the associated sequence is specified by a single integer parameter which determines the smoothness classes and the inner product can be expressed via $L_2$ norms of the derivatives of the function. We map higher order digital nets from the unit cube to a suitable subcube of $\mathbb{R}^s$ via a linear transformation and show that such rules achieve, apart from powers of $\log N$, the optimal rate of convergence of the integration error.

Truncation Dimension for Linear Problems on Multivariate Function Spaces

The paper considers linear problems on weighted spaces of multivariate functions of many variables. The main questions addressed are: When is it possible to approximate the solution for the original function of very many variables by the solution for the same function; however with all but the first $k$ variables set to zero, so that the corresponding error is small? What is the truncation dimension, i.e., the smallest number $k=k(\varepsilon)$ such that the corresponding error is bounded by a given error demand $\varepsilon$? Surprisingly, $k(\varepsilon)$ could be very small even for weights with a modest speed of convergence to zero.

Tractability properties of the weighted star discrepancy of regular grids

In this paper we study tractability properties of the weighted star discrepancy with general coefficients of centered regular grids with different mesh-sizes. We give exact characterizations of the weight sequences $(γ_j)_{j \ge 1}$ such that the regular grid with different mesh-sizes achieves weak, uniform weak, quasi polynomial, polynomial or strong polynomial tractability for the $\boldsymbolγ$-weighted star discrepancy. For example, a necessary and sufficient condition such that the regular grid with different mesh-sizes achieves weak tractability for the $\boldsymbolγ$-weighted star discrepancy is $\lim_{j \rightarrow \infty}j γ_j=0$.

Truncation in Average and Worst Case Settings for Special Classes of $\infty$-Variate Functions

The paper considers truncation errors for functions of the form $f(x_1,x_2,\dots)=g(\sum_{j=1}^\infty x_j\,ξ_j)$, i.e., errors of approximating $f$ by $f_k(x_1,\dots,x_k)=g(\sum_{j=1}^k x_j\,ξ_j)$, where the numbers $ξ_j$ converge to zero sufficiently fast and $x_j$'s are i.i.d. random variables. As explained in the introduction, functions $f$ of the form above appear in a number of important applications. To have positive results for possibly large classes of such functions, the paper provides sharp bounds on truncation errors in both the average and worst case settings. In the former case, the functions $g$ are from a Hilbert space $G$ endowed with a zero mean probability measure with a given covariance kernel. In the latter case, the functions $g$ are from a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, or a space of functions satisfying a Hölder condition.

Tractability of $\mathbb{L}_2$-approximation in hybrid function spaces

We consider multivariate $\mathbb{L}_2$-approximation in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces which are tensor products of weighted Walsh spaces and weighted Korobov spaces. We study the minimal worst-case error $e^{\mathbb{L}_2-\mathrm{app},Λ}(N,d)$ of all algorithms that use $N$ information evaluations from the class $Λ$ in the $d$-dimensional case. The two classes $Λ$ considered in this paper are the class $Λ^{\rm all}$ consisting of all linear functionals and the class $Λ^{\rm std}$ consisting only of function evaluations. The focus lies on the dependence of $e^{\mathbb{L}_2-\mathrm{app},Λ}(N,d)$ on the dimension $d$. The main results are conditions for weak, polynomial, and strong polynomial tractability.

Truncation Dimension for Function Approximation

We consider approximation of functions of $s$ variables, where $s$ is very large or infinite, that belong to weighted anchored spaces. We study when such functions can be approximated by algorithms designed for functions with only very small number ${\rm dim^{trnc}}(\varepsilon)$ of variables. Here $\varepsilon$ is the error demand and we refer to ${\rm dim^{trnc}}(\varepsilon)$ as the $\varepsilon$-truncation dimension. We show that for sufficiently fast decaying product weights and modest error demand (up to about $\varepsilon \approx 10^{-5}$) the truncation dimension is surprisingly very small.

On Weyl products and uniform distribution modulo one

In the present paper we study the asymptotic behavior of trigonometric products of the form $\prod_{k=1}^N 2 \sin(πx_k)$ for $N \to \infty$, where the numbers $ω=(x_k)_{k=1}^N$ are evenly distributed in the unit interval $[0,1]$. The main result are matching lower and upper bounds for such products in terms of the star-discrepancy of the underlying points $ω$, thereby improving earlier results obtained by Hlawka in 1969. Furthermore, we consider the special cases when the points $ω$ are the initial segment of a Kronecker or van der Corput sequence. The paper concludes with some probabilistic analogues.

Lattice based integration algorithms: Kronecker sequences and rank-1 lattices

We prove upper bounds on the order of convergence of lattice based algorithms for numerical integration in function spaces of dominating mixed smoothness on the unit cube with homogeneous boundary condition. More precisely, we study worst-case integration errors for Besov spaces of dominating mixed smoothness $\mathring{\mathbf{B}}^s_{p,θ}$, which also comprise the concept of Sobolev spaces of dominating mixed smoothness $\mathring{\mathbf{H}}^s_{p}$ as special cases. The considered algorithms are quasi-Monte Carlo rules with underlying nodes from $T_N(\mathbb{Z}^d) \cap [0,1)^d$, where $T_N$ is a real invertible generator matrix of size $d$. For such rules the worst-case error can be bounded in terms of the Zaremba index of the lattice $\mathbb{X}_N=T_N(\mathbb{Z}^d)$. We apply this result to Kronecker lattices and to rank-1 lattice point sets, which both lead to optimal error bounds up to $\log N$-factors for arbitrary smoothness $s$. The advantage of Kronecker lattices and classical lattice point sets is that the run-time of algorithms generating these point sets is very short.

Discrepancy of second order digital sequences in function spaces with dominating mixed smoothness

The discrepancy function measures the deviation of the empirical distribution of a point set in $[0,1]^d$ from the uniform distribution. In this paper, we study the classical discrepancy function with respect to the BMO and exponential Orlicz norms, as well as Sobolev, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin norms with dominating mixed smoothness. We give sharp bounds for the discrepancy function under such norms with respect to infinite sequences.

Optimal $L_p$-discrepancy bounds for second order digital sequences

The $L_p$-discrepancy is a quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution modulo one of infinite sequences. In 1986 Proinov proved for all $p>1$ a lower bound for the $L_p$-discrepancy of general infinite sequences in the $d$-dimensional unit cube, but it remained an open question whether this lower bound is best possible in the order of magnitude until recently. In 2014 Dick and Pillichshammer gave a first construction of an infinite sequence whose order of $L_2$-discrepancy matches the lower bound of Proinov. Here we give a complete solution to this problem for all finite $p > 1$. We consider so-called order $2$ digital $(t,d)$-sequences over the finite field with two elements and show that such sequences achieve the optimal order of $L_p$-discrepancy simultaneously for all $p \in (1,\infty)$.

$\boldsymbol{L}_{\infty}$-approximation in Korobov spaces with Exponential Weights

We study multivariate $\boldsymbol{L}_{\infty}$-approximation for a weighted Korobov space of periodic functions for which the Fourier coefficients decay exponentially fast. The weights are defined, in particular, in terms of two sequences $\boldsymbol{a}=\{a_j\}$ and $\boldsymbol{b}=\{b_j\}$ of positive real numbers bounded away from zero. We study the minimal worst-case error $e^{\boldsymbol{L}_{\infty}\mathrm{-app},Λ}(n,s)$ of all algorithms that use $n$ information evaluations from a class $Λ$ in the $s$-variate case. We consider two classes $Λ$ in this paper: the class $Λ^{\rm all}$ of all linear functionals and the class $Λ^{\rm std}$ of only function evaluations. We study exponential convergence of the minimal worst-case error, which means that $e^{\boldsymbol{L}_{\infty}\mathrm{-app},Λ}(n,s)$ converges to zero exponentially fast with increasing $n$. Furthermore, we consider how the error depends on the dimension $s$. To this end, we define the notions of $κ$-EC-weak, EC-polynomial and EC-strong polynomial tractability, where EC stands for "exponential convergence". In particular, EC-polynomial tractability means that we need a polynomial number of information evaluations in $s$ and $1+\log\,\varepsilon^{-1}$ to compute an $\varepsilon$-approximation. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions on the sequences $\boldsymbol{a}$ and $\boldsymbol{b}$ for obtaining exponential error convergence, and also for obtaining the various notions of tractability. The results are the same for both classes $Λ$.

Digital inversive vectors can achieve strong polynomial tractability for the weighted star discrepancy and for multivariate integration

We study high-dimensional numerical integration in the worst-case setting. The subject of tractability is concerned with the dependence of the worst-case integration error on the dimension. Roughly speaking, an integration problem is tractable if the worst-case error does not explode exponentially with the dimension. Many classical problems are known to be intractable. However, sometimes tractability can be shown. Often such proofs are based on randomly selected integration nodes. Of course, in applications true random numbers are not available and hence one mimics them with pseudorandom number generators. This motivates us to propose the use of pseudorandom vectors as underlying integration nodes in order to achieve tractability. In particular, we consider digital inverse vectors and present two examples of problems, the weighted star discrepancy and integration of Hölder continuous, absolute convergent Fourier- and cosine series, where the proposed method is successful.
