Digital Quantum Simulation, Trotter Errors, and Quantum Chaos of the Kicked Top

This work aims at giving Trotter errors in digital quantum simulation (DQS) of collective spin systems an interpretation in terms of quantum chaos of the kicked top. In particular, for DQS of such systems, regular dynamics of the kicked top ensures convergence of the Trotterized time evolution, while chaos in the top, which sets in above a sharp threshold value of the Trotter step size, corresponds to the proliferation of Trotter errors. We show the possibility to analyze this phenomenology in a wide variety of experimental realizations of the kicked top, ranging from single atomic spins to trapped-ion quantum simulators which implement DQS of all-to-all interacting spin-1/2 systems. These platforms thus enable in-depth studies of Trotter errors and their relation to signatures of quantum chaos, including the growth of out-of-time-ordered correlators.

Sigma models for quantum chaotic dynamics

We review the construction of the supersymmetric sigma model for unitary maps, using the color- flavor transformation. We then illustrate applications by three case studies in quantum chaos. In two of these cases, general Floquet maps and quantum graphs, we show that universal spectral fluctuations arise provided the pertinent classical dynamics are fully chaotic (ergodic and with decay rates sufficiently gapped away from zero). In the third case, the kicked rotor, we show how the existence of arbitrarily long-lived modes of excitation (diffusion) precludes universal fluctuations and entails quantum localization.

Self-averaging characteristics of spectral fluctuations

The spectral form factor as well as the two-point correlator of the density of (quasi-)energy levels of individual quantum dynamics are not self-averaging. Only suitable smoothing turns them into useful characteristics of spectra. We present numerical data for a fully chaotic kicked top, employing two types of smoothing: one involves primitives of the spectral correlator, the second a small imaginary part of the quasi-energy. Self-averaging universal (like the CUE average) behavior is found for the smoothed correlator, apart from noise which shrinks like $1\over\sqrt N$ as the dimension $N$ of the quantum Hilbert space grows. There are periodically repeated quasi-energy windows of correlation decay and revival wherein the smoothed correlation remains finite as $N\to\infty$ such that the noise is negligible. In between those windows (where the CUE averaged correlator takes on values of the order ${1\over N^2}$) the noise becomes dominant and self-averaging is lost. We conclude that the noise forbids distinction of CUE and GUE type behavior. Surprisingly, the underlying smoothed generating function does not enjoy any self-averaging outside the range of its variables relevant for determining the two-point correlator (and certain higher-order ones). --- We corroborate our numerical findings for the noise by analytically determining the CUE variance of the smoothed single-matrix correlator.

Quantum chaos and effective thermalization

We demonstrate effective equilibration for unitary quantum dynamics under conditions of classical chaos. Focusing on the paradigmatic example of the Dicke model, we show how a constructive description of the thermalization process is facilitated by the Glauber $Q$ or Husimi function, for which the evolution equation turns out to be of Fokker-Planck type. The equation describes a competition of classical drift and quantum diffusion in contractive and expansive directions. By this mechanism the system follows a 'quantum smoothened' approach to equilibrium, which avoids the notorious singularities inherent to classical chaotic flows.

Equilibration and macroscopic quantum fluctuations in the Dicke model

We discuss the unitary quantum dynamics of the Dicke model (spin and oscillator coupled). A suitable quasiprobabilty representing the quantum state turns out to obey a Fokker-Planck equation, with drift terms representing the underlying classical Hamiltonian flow and diffusion terms describing quantum fluctuations. We show (by projecting the dynamics onto a co-moving Poincaré section) how the interplay of deterministic drift and quantum diffusion generates equilibration to the microcanonical density, under conditions of global classical chaos. The pertinent photon statistics reveals macroscopic quantum fluctuations.

Level statistics in arithmetical and pseudo-arithmetical chaos

We resolve a long-standing riddle in quantum chaos, posed by certain fully chaotic billiards with constant negative curvature whose periodic orbits are highly degenerate in length. Depending on the boundary conditions for the quantum wave functions, the energy spectra either have uncorrelated levels usually associated with classical integrability or conform to the "universal" Wigner-Dyson type although the classical dynamics in both cases is the same. The resolution turns out surprisingly simple. The Maslov indices of orbits within multiplets of degenerate length either yield equal phases for the respective Feynman amplitudes (and thus Poissonian level statistics) or give rise to amplitudes with uncorrelated phases (leading to Wigner-Dyson level correlations). The recent semiclassical explanation of spectral universality in quantum chaos is thus extended to the latter case of "pseudo-arithmetical" chaos.

Periodic-orbit theory of universal level correlations in quantum chaos

Using Gutzwiller's semiclassical periodic-orbit theory we demonstrate universal behaviour of the two-point correlator of the density of levels for quantum systems whose classical limit is fully chaotic. We go beyond previous work in establishing the full correlator such that its Fourier transform, the spectral form factor, is determined for all times, below and above the Heisenberg time. We cover dynamics with and without time reversal invariance (from the orthogonal and unitary symmetry classes). A key step in our reasoning is to sum the periodic-orbit expansion in terms of a matrix integral, like the one known from the sigma model of random-matrix theory.

Near action-degenerate periodic-orbit bunches: A skeleton of chaos

Long periodic orbits of hyperbolic dynamics do not exist as independent individuals but rather come in closely packed bunches. Under weak resolution a bunch looks like a single orbit in configuration space, but close inspection reveals topological orbit-to-orbit differences. The construction principle of bunches involves close self-"encounters" of an orbit wherein two or more stretches stay close. A certain duality of encounters and the intervening "links" reveals an infinite hierarchical structure of orbit bunches. -- The orbit-to-orbit action differences $ΔS$ within a bunch can be arbitrarily small. Bunches with $ΔS$ of the order of Planck's constant have constructively interfering Feynman amplitudes for quantum observables, and this is why the classical bunching phenomenon could yield the semiclassical explanation of universal fluctuations in quantum spectra and transport.

Semiclassical spectral correlator in quasi one-dimensional systems

We investigate the spectral statistics of chaotic quasi one dimensional systems such as long wires. To do so we represent the spectral correlation function $R(ε)$ through derivatives of a generating function and semiclassically approximate the latter in terms of periodic orbits. In contrast to previous work we obtain both non-oscillatory and oscillatory contributions to the correlation function. Both types of contributions are evaluated to leading order in $1/ε$ for systems with and without time-reversal invariance. Our results agree with expressions from the theory of disordered systems.

Quantum measurements without macroscopic superpositions

We study a class of quantum measurement models. A microscopic object is entangled with a macroscopic pointer such that each eigenvalue of the measured object observable is tied up with a specific pointer deflection. Different pointer positions mutually decohere under the influence of a bath. Object-pointer entanglement and decoherence of distinct pointer readouts proceed simultaneously. Mixtures of macroscopically distinct object-pointer states may then arise without intervening macroscopic superpositions. Initially, object and apparatus are statistically independent while the latter has pointer and bath correlated according to a metastable local thermal equilibrium. We obtain explicit results for the object-pointer dynamics with temporal coherence decay in general neither exponential nor Gaussian. The decoherence time does not depend on details of the pointer-bath coupling if it is smaller than the bath correlation time, whereas in the opposite Markov regime the decay depends strongly on whether that coupling is Ohmic or super-Ohmic.

Semiclassical Approach to Chaotic Quantum Transport

We describe a semiclassical method to calculate universal transport properties of chaotic cavities. While the energy-averaged conductance turns out governed by pairs of entrance-to-exit trajectories, the conductance variance, shot noise and other related quantities require trajectory quadruplets; simple diagrammatic rules allow to find the contributions of these pairs and quadruplets. Both pure symmetry classes and the crossover due to an external magnetic field are considered.

Periodic-Orbit Theory of Level Correlations

We present a semiclassical explanation of the so-called Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture which asserts universality of spectral fluctuations in chaotic dynamics. We work with a generating function whose semiclassical limit is determined by quadruplets of sets of periodic orbits. The asymptotic expansions of both the non-oscillatory and the oscillatory part of the universal spectral correlator are obtained. Borel summation of the series reproduces the exact correlator of random-matrix theory.

Semiclassical Theory for Parametric Correlation of Energy Levels

Parametric energy-level correlation describes the response of the energy-level statistics to an external parameter such as the magnetic field. Using semiclassical periodic-orbit theory for a chaotic system, we evaluate the parametric energy-level correlation depending on the magnetic field difference. The small-time expansion of the spectral form factor $K(τ)$ is shown to be in agreement with the prediction of parameter dependent random-matrix theory to all orders in $τ$.

Semiclassical Prediction for Shot Noise in Chaotic Cavities

We show that in clean chaotic cavities the power of shot noise takes a universal form. Our predictions go beyond previous results from random-matrix theory, in covering the experimentally relevant case of few channels. Following a semiclassical approach we evaluate the contributions of quadruplets of classical trajectories to shot noise. Our approach can be extended to a variety of transport phenomena as illustrated for the crossover between symmetry classes in the presence of a weak magnetic field.

Overdamping by weakly coupled environments

A quantum system weakly interacting with a fast environment usually undergoes a relaxation with complex frequencies whose imaginary parts are damping rates quadratic in the coupling to the environment, in accord with Fermi's ``Golden Rule''. We show for various models (spin damped by harmonic-oscillator or random-matrix baths, quantum diffusion, quantum Brownian motion) that upon increasing the coupling up to a critical value still small enough to allow for weak-coupling Markovian master equations, a new relaxation regime can occur. In that regime, complex frequencies lose their real parts such that the process becomes overdamped. Our results call into question the standard belief that overdamping is exclusively a strong coupling feature.

Semiclassical Theory of Chaotic Conductors

We calculate the Landauer conductance through chaotic ballistic devices in the semiclassical limit, to all orders in the inverse number of scattering channels without and with a magnetic field. Families of pairs of entrance-to-exit trajectories contribute, similarly to the pairs of periodic orbits making up the small-time expansion of the spectral form factor of chaotic dynamics. As a clue to the exact result we find that close self-encounters slightly hinder the escape of trajectories into leads.

Periodic-Orbit Theory of Universality in Quantum Chaos

We argue semiclassically, on the basis of Gutzwiller's periodic-orbit theory, that full classical chaos is paralleled by quantum energy spectra with universal spectral statistics, in agreement with random-matrix theory. For dynamics from all three Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes, we calculate the small-time spectral form factor $K(τ)$ as power series in the time $τ$. Each term $τ^n$ of that series is provided by specific families of pairs of periodic orbits. The contributing pairs are classified in terms of close self-encounters in phase space. The frequency of occurrence of self-encounters is calculated by invoking ergodicity. Combinatorial rules for building pairs involve non-trivial properties of permutations. We show our series to be equivalent to perturbative implementations of the non-linear sigma models for the Wigner-Dyson ensembles of random matrices and for disordered systems; our families of orbit pairs are one-to-one with Feynman diagrams known from the sigma model.

Semiclassical Foundation of Universality in Quantum Chaos

We sketch the semiclassical core of a proof of the so-called Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture: A dynamical system with full classical chaos has a quantum energy spectrum with universal fluctuations on the scale of the mean level spacing. We show how in the semiclassical limit all system specific properties fade away, leaving only ergodicity, hyperbolicity, and combinatorics as agents determining the contributions of pairs of classical periodic orbits to the quantum spectral form factor. The small-time form factor is thus reproduced semiclassically. Bridges between classical orbits and (the non-linear sigma model of) quantum field theory are built by revealing the contributing orbit pairs as topologically equivalent to Feynman diagrams.
