Reeb graph and quasi-states on the two-dimensional torus

This note deals with quasi-states on the two-dimensional torus. Quasi-states are certain quasi-linear functionals (introduced by Aarnes) on the space of continuous functions. Grubb constructed a quasi-state on the torus, which is invariant under the group of area-preserving diffemorphisms, and which moreover vanishes on functions having support in an open disk. Knudsen asserted the uniqueness of such a quasi-state; for the sake of completeness, we provide a proof. We calculate the value of Grubb's quasi-state on Morse functions with distinct critical values via their Reeb graphs. The resulting formula coincides with the one obtained by Py in his work on quasi-morphisms on the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the torus.

Isotopy-invariant topological measures on closed orientable surfaces of higher genus

Given a closed orientable surface (Σ) of genus at least two, we establish an affine isomorphism between the convex compact set of isotopy-invariant topological measures on (Σ) and the convex compact set of additive functions on the set of isotopy classes of certain subsurfaces of (Σ). We then construct such additive functions, and thus isotopy-invariant topological measures, from probability measures on (Σ) together with some additional data. The map associating topological measures to probability measures is affine and continuous. Certain Dirac measures map to simple topological measures, while the topological measures due to Py and Rosenberg arise from the normalized Euler characteristic.

Quasi-morphisms and the Poisson bracket

For a class of symplectic manifolds, we introduce a functional which assigns a real number to any pair of continuous functions on the manifold. This functional has a number of interesting properties. On the one hand, it is Lipschitz with respect to the uniform norm. On the other hand, it serves as a measure of non-commutativity of functions in the sense of the Poisson bracket, the operation which involves first derivatives of the functions. Furthermore, the same functional gives rise to a non-trivial lower bound for the error of the simultaneous measurement of a pair of non-commuting Hamiltonians. These results manifest a link between the algebraic structure of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and the function theory on a symplectic manifold. The above-mentioned functional comes from a special homogeneous quasi-morphism on the universal cover of the group, which is rooted in the Floer theory.

An "anti-Gleason" phenomenon and simultaneous measurements in classical mechanics

We report on an "anti-Gleason" phenomenon in classical mechanics: in contrast with the quantum case, the algebra of classical observables can carry a non-linear quasi-state, a monotone functional which is linear on all subspaces generated by Poisson-commutative functions. We present an example of such a quasi-state in the case when the phase space is the 2-sphere. This example lies in the intersection of two seemingly remote mathematical theories - symplectic topology and the theory of topological quasi-states. We use this quasi-state to estimate the error of the simultaneous measurement of non-commuting Hamiltonians.

Quasi-states and the Poisson bracket on surfaces

We present a convexity-type result concerning simple quasi-states on closed manifolds. As a corollary, an inequality emerges which relates the Poisson bracket and the measure of non-additivity of a simple quasi-state on a closed surface equipped with an area form. In addition, we prove that the uniform norm of the Poisson bracket of two functions on a surface is stable from below under C^0-perturbations.
