Complete hyperentangled-Bell-state analysis for photon systems assisted by quantum-dot spins in optical microcavities

Bell-state analysis (BSA) is essential in quantum communication, but it is impossible to distinguish unambiguously the four Bell states in the polarization degree of freedom (DOF) of two-photon systems with only linear optical elements, except for the case in which the BSA is assisted with hyperentangled states, the simultaneous entanglement in more than one DOF. Here, we propose a scheme to distinguish completely the 16 hyperentangled Bell states in both the polarization and the spatial-mode DOFs of two-photon systems, by using the giant nonlinear optics in quantum dot-cavity systems. This scheme can be applied to increase the channel capacity of long-distance quantum communication based on hyperentanglement, such as entanglement swapping, teleportation, and superdense coding. We use hyperentanglement swapping as an example to show the application of this HBSA.

Complete deterministic multi-electron Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state analyzer for quantum communication

We present a scheme for the multi-electron Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state analyzer, resorting to an interface between the polarization of a probe photon and the spin of an electron in a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. All the multi-spin GHZ states can be completely discriminated by using single-photon detectors and linear optical elements. Our scheme has some features. First, it is a complete GHZ-state analyzer for multi-electron spin systems. Second, the initial entangled states remain after being identified and they can be used for a successive task. Third, the electron qubits are static and the photons play a role of a medium for information transfer, which has a good application in quantum repeater in which the electron qubits are used to store the information and the photon qubits are used to transfer the information between others.

Single-photon-assisted entanglement concentration of a multi-photon system in a partially entangled W state with weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity

We propose a nonlocal entanglement concentration protocol (ECP) for $N$-photon systems in a partially entangled W state, resorting to some ancillary single photons and the parity-check measurement based on cross-Kerr nonlinearity. One party in quantum communication first performs a parity-check measurement on her photon in an $N$-photon system and an ancillary photon, and then she picks up the even-parity instance for obtaining the standard W state. When she obtains an odd-parity instance, the system is in a less-entanglement state and it is the resource in the next round of entanglement concentration. By iterating the entanglement concentration process several times, the present ECP has the total success probability approaching to the limit in theory. The present ECP has the advantage of a high success probability. Moreover, the present ECP requires only the $N$-photon system itself and some ancillary single photons, not two copies of the systems, which decreases the difficulty of its implementation largely in experiment. It maybe have good applications in quantum communication in future.

Dynamics of entanglement for a two-parameter class of states in a qubit-qutrit system

We investigate the dynamics of entanglement for a two-parameter class of states in a hybrid qubit-qutrit system under the influence of various dissipative channels. Our results show that entanglement sudden death (ESD) is a general phenomenon and it usually takes place in a qubit-qutrit system interacting with various noisy channels, not only the case with dephasing and depolarizing channels observed by others. ESD can only be avoided for some initially entangled states under some particular noisy channels. Moreover, the environment affects the entanglement and the coherence of the system in very different ways.

Deterministic CNOT Gate on electron qubits using quantum-dot spins in double-sided optical microcavities

We propose a scheme to construct a deterministic CNOT gate on static electron-spin qubits, allowing for deterministic scalable quantum computing in solid-state systems. The excess electron confined in a charged quantum dot inside a double-sided optical microcavity represents the qubit, and the single photons play a medium role. Moreover, our device can work in both the weak coupling and the strong coupling regimes, but high fidelities are achieved only when the ratio of the side leakage to the cavity loss is low. Finally, we assess the feasibility of this device and show it can be implemented with current technology.

Optimal multipartite entanglement concentration of electron-spin states based on charge detection and projection measurements

We propose an optimal entanglement concentration protocol (ECP) for nonlocal N-electron systems in a partially entangled pure state, resorting to charge detection and the projection measurement on an additional electron. For each nonlocal N-electron system, one party in quantum communication, say Alice first entangles it with an additional electron, and then she projects the additional electron into an orthogonal basis for dividing the N-electron systems into two groups. In the first group, the N parties obtain a subset of $N$-electron systems in a maximally entangled state directly. In the second group, they obtain some less-entangled N-electron systems which are the resource for the entanglement concentration in the next round. By iterating the entanglement concentration process several times, the present ECP has the maximal success probability, the theoretical limit of an ECP as it just equals to the entanglement of the partially entangled state, far higher than others, without resorting to a collective unitary evolution.

Optimal nonlocal multipartite entanglement concentration based on projection measurements

We propose an optimal nonlocal entanglement concentration protocol (ECP) for multi-photon systems in a partially entangled pure state, resorting to the projection measurement on an additional photon. One party in quantum communication first performs a parity-check measurement on her photon in an N-photon system and an additional photon, and then she projects the additional photon into an orthogonal Hilbert space for dividing the original $N$-photon systems into two groups. In the first group, the N parties will obtain a subset of $N$-photon systems in a maximally entangled state. In the second group, they will obtain some less-entangled N-photon systems which are the resource for the entanglement concentration in the next round. By iterating the entanglement concentration process several times, the present ECP has the maximal success probability which is just equivalent to the entanglement of the partially entangled state. That is, this ECP is an optimal one.

Efficient multipartite entanglement purification with the entanglement link from a subspace

We present an efficient multipartite entanglement purification protocol (MEPP) for N-photon systems in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state with parity-check detectors. It contains two parts. One is the conventional MEPP with which the parties can obtain a high-fidelity N-photon ensemble directly, similar to the MEPP with controlled-not gates. The other is our recycling MEPP in which the entanglement link is used to produce some $N$-photon entangled systems from entangled N'-photon subsystems (2 \leq N'<N) coming from the instances which are just discarded in all existing conventional MEPPs. The entangled N'-photon subsystems are obtained efficiently by measuring the photons with potential bit-flip errors. With these two parts, the present MEPP has a higher efficiency than all other conventional MEPPs.

Multipartite electronic entanglement purification with charge detection

We present a multipartite entanglement purification scheme in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state for electrons based on their spins and their charges. This scheme works for purification with two steps, i.e., bit-flipping error correction and phase-error flip error correction. By repeating these two steps, the parties in quantum communication can get some high-fidelity multipartite entangled electronic systems.

Passively self-error-rejecting qubit transmission over a collective-noise channel

We propose a passively self-error-rejecting single-qubit transmission scheme for an arbitrary polarization state of a single qubit over a collective-noise channel, without resorting to additional qubits and entanglement. By splitting a single qubit into some wavepackets with some Mach-Zehnder interferometers, we can obtain an uncorrupted state with a success probability approaching 100% via postselection in different time bins, independent of the parameters of collective noise. It is simpler and more flexible than the schemes utilizing decoherence-free subspace and those with additional qubits. One can directly apply this scheme to almost all quantum communication protocols based on single photons or entangled photon systems against a collective noise.

One-step deterministic polarization entanglement purification using spatial entanglement

We present a one-step deterministic entanglement purification protocol with linear optics and postselection. Compared with the Simon-Pan protocol (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 257901 (2002)), this one-step protocol has some advantages. First, it can get a maximally entangled pair with only one step, not only improve the fidelity of less-entangled photon pairs by performing the protocol repeatedly. Second, it works in a deterministic way, not a probabilistic one, which will reduce a great deal of entanglement resources. Third, it does not require the polarization state be entangled, only spatial entanglement is needed. Moreover, it is feasible with current techniques (Nature 423, 417 (2003)). All these advantages will make this one-step protocol more convenient than others in the applications in quantum communication.

One-step error correction for multipartite polarization entanglement

We present two economical one-step error-correction protocols for multipartite polarization-entangled systems in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. One uses spatial entanglement to correct errors in the polarization entanglement of an N-photon system, resorting to linear optical elements. The other uses frequency entanglement to correct errors in the polarization entanglement of an N-photon system. The parties in quantum communication can obtain a maximally entangled state from each N-photon system transmitted with one step in these two protocols, and both of their success probabilities are 100%, in principle. That is, they both work in a deterministic way, and they do not largely consume the less-entangled photon systems, which is far different from conventional multipartite entanglement purification schemes. These features may make these two protocols more useful for practical applications in long-distance quantum communication.

High-capacity quantum secure direct communication based on quantum hyperdense coding with hyperentanglement

We present a quantum hyperdense coding protocol with hyperentanglement in polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedom of photons first and then give the details for a quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) protocol based on this quantum hyperdense coding protocol. This QSDC protocol has the advantage of having a higher capacity than the quantum communication protocols with a qubit system. Compared with the QSDC protocol based on superdense coding with $d$-dimensional systems, this QSDC protocol is more feasible as the preparation of a high-dimension quantum system is more difficult than that of a two-level quantum system at present.

Complete hyperentangled-Bell-state analysis for quantum communication

It is impossible to unambiguously distinguish the four Bell states in polarization, resorting to linear optical elements only. Recently, the hyperentangled Bell state, the simultaneous entanglement in more than one degree of freedom, has been used to assist in the complete Bell-state analysis of the four Bell states. However, if the additional degree of freedom is qubitlike, one can only distinguish 7 from the group of 16 states. Here we present a way to distinguish the hyperentangled Bell states completely with the help of cross-Kerr nonlinearity. Also, we discuss its application in the quantum teleportation of a particle in an unknown state in two different degrees of freedom and in the entanglement swapping of hyperentangled states. These applications will increase the channel capacity of long-distance quantum communication.

Residual effect on the robustness of multiqubit entanglement

We investigate the relation between the entanglement and the robustness of a multipartite system to a depolarization noise. We find that the robustness of a two-qubit system in an arbitrary pure state depends completely on its entanglement. However, this is not always true in a three-qubit system. There is a residual effect on the robustness of a three-qubit system in an arbitrary superposition of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state and W state. Its entanglement determines the trend of its robustness. However, there is a splitting on its robustness under the same entanglement. Its robustness not only has the same periodicity as its three-tangle but also alters with its three-tangle synchronously. There is also a splitting on the robustness of an $n$-qubit ($n>3$) system although it is more complicated.

Efficient quantum entanglement distribution over an arbitrary collective-noise channel

We present an efficient quantum entanglement distribution over an arbitrary collective-noise channel. The basic idea in the present scheme is that two parties in quantum communication first transmit the entangled states in the frequency degree of freedom which suffers little from the noise in an optical fiber. After the two parties share the photon pairs, they add some operations and equipments to transfer the frequency entanglement of pairs into the polarization entanglement with the success probability of 100\%. Finally, they can get maximally entangled polarization states with polarization independent wavelength division multiplexers and quantum frequency up-conversion which can erase distinguishability for frequency. Compared with conventional entanglement purification protocols, the present scheme works in a deterministic way in principle. Surprisingly, the collective noise leads to an additional advantage.

Efficient and economic five-party quantum state sharing of an arbitrary m-qubit state

We present an efficient and economic scheme for five-party quantum state sharing of an arbitrary m-qubit state with $2m$ three-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and three-particle GHZ-state measurements. It is more convenient than other schemes as it only resorts to three-particle GHZ states and three-particle joint measurement, not five-particle entanglements and five-particle joint measurements. Moreover, this symmetric scheme is in principle secure even though the number of the dishonest agents is more than one. Its total efficiency approaches the maximal value.

Deterministic entanglement purification and complete nonlocal Bell-state analysis with hyperentanglement

Entanglement purification is a very important element for long-distance quantum communication. Different from all the existing entanglement purification protocols (EPPs) in which two parties can only obtain some quantum systems in a mixed entangled state with a higher fidelity probabilistically by consuming quantum resources exponentially, here we present a deterministic EPP with hyperentanglement. Using this protocl, the two parties can, in principle, obtain deterministically maximally entangled pure states in polarization without destroying any less-entangled photon pair, which will improve the efficiency of long-distance quantum communication exponentially. Meanwhile, it will be shown that this EPP can be used to complete nonlocal Bell-state analysis perfectly. We also discuss this EPP in a practical transmission.
