General covariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity without projectability condition and its applications to cosmology

We consider an extended theory of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with the detailed balance condition softly breaking, but without the projectability condition. With the former, the number of independent coupling constants is significantly reduced. With the latter and by extending the original foliation-preserving diffeomorphism symmetry $ {Diff}(M, {\cal{F}})$ to include a local U(1) symmetry, the spin-0 gravitons are eliminated. Thus, all the problems related to them disappear, including the instability, strong coupling, and different speeds in the gravitational sector. When the theory couples to a scalar field, we find that the scalar field is not only stable in both the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR), but also free of the strong coupling problem, because of the presence of high-order spatial derivative terms of the scalar field. Furthermore, applying the theory to cosmology, we find that due to the additional U(1) symmetry, the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe is necessarily flat. We also investigate the scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations of the flat FRW universe, and derive the general linearized field equations for each kind of the perturbations.

Equipartition of energy and the first law of thermodynamics at the apparent horizon

We apply the holographic principle and the equipartition law of energy to the apparent horizon of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe and derive the Friedmann equation describing the dynamics of the universe. We also show that the equipartition law of energy can be interpreted as the first law of thermodynamics at the apparent horizon.

Extended Hořava Gravity with Physical Ground-State Wavefunction

We propose a new extended theory of Hořava gravity based on the following three conditions: (i) UV completion, (ii) healthy IR behavior and (iii) a stable vacuum state in quantized version of the theory. Compared with other extended theories, we stress that any realistic theory of gravity must have physical ground states when quantization is performed. To fulfill the three conditions, we softly break the detailed balance but keep its basic structure unchanged. It turns out that the new model constructed in this way can avoid the strong coupling problem and remains power-counting renormalizable, moreover, it has a stable vacuum state by an appropriate choice of parameters.

The Quantum Viscosity Bound In Lovelock Gravity

Based on the finite-temperature AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in any Lovelock theories to any order. Our result shows that any Lovelock correction terms except the Gauss-Bonnet term have no contribution to the value of $η/s$. This result is consistent with that of Brustein and Medved's prediction.

Stochastic Quantization of the Hořava Gravity

The stochastic quantization method is applied to the recent proposal by Hořava for gravity. We show that in contrast to General Relativity, the Hořava's action, satisfying the detailed balance condition, has a stable, non-perturbative quantum vacuum when the DeWitt parameter $λ$ is not greater than 1/3, providing a possible candidate for consistent quantum gravity.

Viscosity Bound, Causality Violation and Instability with Stringy Correction and Charge

Recently, it has been shown that if we consider the higher derivative correction, the viscosity bound conjectured to be $η/s=1/4π$ is violated and so is the causality. In this paper, we consider medium effect and the higher derivative correction simultaneously by adding charge and Gauss-Bonnet terms. We find that the viscosity bound violation is not changed by the charge. However, we find that two effects together create another instability for large momentum regime. We argue the presence of tachyonic modes and show it numerically. The stability of the black brane requires the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $λ$($=2α'/l^2$) to be smaller than 1/24. We draw a phase diagram relevant to the instability in charge-coupling space.

Entropy function and higher derivative corrections to entropies in (anti-)de Sitter space

We first briefly discuss the relation between black hole thermodynamics and the entropy function formalism. We find that an equation which governs the relationship between Sen's entropy function and black hole entropy, can quickly give higher order corrections to entropy of pure (anti-) de Sitter space without knowing the corrected metric. We also show that near horizon geometry and the entropy function extremization is no longer required for pure (anti-)de Sitter space. The entropy of (anti-)de Sitter space and Schwarzschild-(anti-) de Sitter black holes together with Gauss-Bonnet terms, $R^2$ terms and $R^4$ terms are calculated as concrete examples.

Density Dependence of Transport Coefficients from Holographic Hydrodynamics

We study the transport coefficients of Quark-Gluon-Plasma in finite temperature and finite baryon density. We use AdS/QCD of charged AdS black hole background with bulk-filling branes identifying the U(1) charge as the baryon number. We calculate the diffusion constant, the shear viscosity and the thermal conductivity to plot their density and temperature dependences. Hydrodynamic relations between those are shown to hold exactly. The diffusion constant and the shear viscosity are decreasing as a function of density for fixed total energy. For fixed temperature, the fluid becomes less diffusible and more viscous for larger baryon density.

On black hole thermodynamics and the entropy function formalism

From the black hole thermodynamics point of view, we show that the entropy function $\mathbf{f}$ and the free energy $F$ are related via $\mathbf{f}=e_{I}q_{I}+Ω_Hq_I{A_ϕ^I}'-\frac{\partial F}{\partial r} |_{r_{H}}$. Assuming the entropy function is known for extremal black holes, we propose an approach to calculate the entropy of non-extremal cases by slightly moving the extremal black hole geometry from extremality. The entropy of non-extremal $D1D5$- and $D1D5p$-branes in the presence of higher derivative corrections are computed as concrete examples. An attempt has also been made to explain why the entropy function method can calculate the corrected entropy without knowing the exact form of black hole solution in higher derivative gravity theories.

Geometric Flows and Black Holes

Motivated by the newest progress in geometric flows both in mathematics and physics, we apply the geometric evolution equation to study some black-hole problems. Our results show that, under certain conditions, the geometric evolution equations satisfy the Birkhoff theorem, and surprisingly, in the case of spherically symmetric metric field, the Einstein equation, the Ricci flow, and the hyperbolic geometric flow in vacuum spacetime have the same black-hole solutions, especially in the case of $Λ=0$, they all have the Schwarzschild solution. In addition, these results can be generalized to a kind of more general geometric flow.

Perturbative Calculation of Quasinormal Modes of $d$--Dimensional Black Holes

We study analytically quasinormal modes in a wide variety of black hole spacetimes, including $d$--dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes and non-asymptotically flat spacetimes (particular attention has been paid to the four dimensional case). We extend the analytical calculation to include first-order corrections to analytical expressions for quasinormal mode frequencies by making use of a monodromy technique. All possible type perturbations are included in this paper. The calculation performed in this paper show that systematic expansions for uncharged black holes include different corrections with the ones for charged black holes. This difference makes them have a different $n$--dependence relation in the first-order correction formulae. The method applied above in calculating the first-order corrections of quasinormal mode frequencies seems to be unavailable for black holes with small charge. This result supports the Neitzke's prediction. On what concerns quantum gravity we confirm the view that the $\ln3$ in $d=4$ Schwarzschild seems to be nothing but some numerical coincidences.

Quasinormal modes of Rarita-Schwinger field in Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetimes

The Newman-Penrose formalism is used to deal with the quasinormal modes(QNM's) of Rarita-Schwinger perturbations outside a Reissner-Nordström black hole. We obtain four kinds of possible expressions of effective potentials, which are proved to be of the same spectra of quasinormal mode frequencies. The quasinormal mode frequencies evaluated by the WKB potential approximation show that, similar to those for Dirac perturbations, the real parts of the frequencies increase with the charge $Q$ and decrease with the mode number $n$, while the dampings almost keep unchanged as the charge increases.

Quasinormal modes in Schwarschild black holes due to arbitrary spin fields

The Newman-Penrose formalism is used to deal with the massless scalar, neutrino, electromagnetic, gravitino and gravitational quasinormal modes (QNMs) in Schwarzschild black holes in a united form. The quasinormal mode frequencies evaluated by using the 3rd-order WKB potential approximation show that the boson perturbations and the fermion perturbations behave in a contrary way for the variation of the oscillation frequencies with spin, while this is no longer true for the damping's, which variate with $s$ in a same way both for boson and fermion perturbations.

Quasinormal modes of charged black holes in string theory

Both scalar and Dirac quasinormal modes in Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger black hole spacetime are studied by using the WKB approximation and the Pöschl-Teller approximation. For scalar field, we find that the QNMs with higher dilatons decay more rapidly than that with lower ones. However, this is not the case for mass $m$. Fields with higher mass will decay more slowly. The similar behaviors appear in the case of Dirac field. We also find that QNM frequencies evaluated by using WKB approximation and Pöschl-Teller approximation have a good agreement with each other when mode number $n$ is small.
