On Stability and Instability of Gravity Driven Navier-Stokes-Korteweg Model in Two Dimensions

Bresch-Desjardins-Gisclon-Sart have derived that the capillarity can slow {down} the growth rate of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in the capillary fluids based on the linearized two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations in 2008. Motivated by their linear theory, we further investigate the nonlinear RT problem for the 2D incompressible case in a horizontally periodic slab domain with Navier boundary condition, and rigorously verify that the RT instability can be inhibited by capillarity under our 2D setting. More precisely, if the RT density profile $\barρ$ satisfies an additional stabilizing condition, then there is a threshold $κ_{C}$ of capillarity coefficient, such that if the capillarity coefficient $κ$ is bigger than $κ_{C}$, then the small perturbation solution around the RT equilibrium state is \emph{algebraically} stable in time. In particular, if the RT density profile is linear, then the threshold $κ_{C}$ can be given by the formula $κ_{C}=g /(π^2h^{-2}+L^{-2})\barρ'$, where $2πL$ denotes the length of a periodic cell of the slab domain in the horizontal direction, and $h$ the height of the slab domain. In addition, we also provide a nonlinear instability result for $κ\in[0,κ_{C})$. The instability result presents that the capillarity can not inhibit the RT instability, if its strength is too small.

Global weak solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck-Navier-Stokes system

We consider the compressible Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck-Navier-Stokes system in a three dimensional bounded domain with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The system describes the evolution of charged particles ensemble dispersed in an isentropic fluid. For the adiabatic coefficient $γ>3/2$, we establish the global existence of weak solutions to this system with arbitrary large initial and boundary data.

Global strong solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system with soft potential in a bounded domain

Boundary effects are crucial for dynamics of dilute charged gases governed by the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system. In this paper, we study the existence and regularity of solutions to the VPB system with soft potential in a bounded convex domain with in-flow boundary condition. We establish the existence of strong solutions in the time interval $[0,T]$ for an arbitrary given $T>0$ when the initial distribution function is near an absolute Maxwellian. Our contribution is based on a new weighted energy estimate in some $W^{1,p}$ space and $L_x^3 L_v^{1+}$ space for soft potential. By using the classical $L^2$--$L^\infty$ method and bootstrap argument, we extend the local solutions from small time scale to large time scale.

Dissipative solutions to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations

The existence of dissipative solutions to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations was established in this paper. This notion was inspired by the concept of dissipative solutions to the incompressible Euler equations of Lions (\cite{Lions-1996}, Section 4.4). Our method is to recover such solutions by passing to the limits from approximated solutions, thanks to compactness argument.

Global strong solutions to the 3D full compressible Navier-Stokes system with vacuum in a bounded domain

In this short paper we establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the 3D full compressible Navier-Stokes system with vacuum in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ by the bootstrap argument provided that the viscosity coefficients $λ$ and $μ$ satisfy that $7λ>9μ$ and the initial data $ρ_0$ and $u_0$ satisfy that $\|ρ_0\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$ and $\|ρ_0|u_0|^5\|_{L^1(Ω)}$ are sufficient small.

Strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations: Global existence near the equilibrium and large time behavior

A kinetic-fluid model describing the evolutions of disperse two-phase flows is considered. The model consists of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation for the particles (disperse phase) coupled with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid (fluid phase) through the friction force. The friction force depends on the density, which is different from many previous studies on kinetic-fluid models and is more physical in modeling but significantly more difficult in analysis. New approach and techniques are introduced to deal with the strong coupling of the fluid and the particles. The global well-posedness of strong solution in the three-dimensional whole space is established when the initial data is a small perturbation of some given equilibrium. Moreover, the algebraic rate of convergence of solution toward the equilibrium state is obtained. For the periodic domain the same global well-posedness result still holds while the convergence rate is exponential.

Local well-posedness and low Mach number limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations in critical spaces

The local well-posedness and low Mach number limit are considered for the multi-dimensional isentropic compressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations in critical spaces. First the local well-posedness of solution to the viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data is established. Then the low Mach number limit is studied for general large data and it is proved that the solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rates are obtained.

Global strong solutions to the planar compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data and vaccum

This paper considers the initial boundary problem to the planar compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data and vacuum. The global existence and uniqueness of large strong solutions are established when the heat conductivity coefficient $κ(θ)$ satisfies \begin{equation*} C_{1}(1+θ^q)\leq κ(θ)\leq C_2(1+θ^q) \end{equation*} for some constants $q>0$, and $C_1,C_2>0$.

Zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions

We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.

Non-relativistic limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-P1 approximation model arising in radiation hydrodynamics

As is well-known that the general radiation hydrodynamics models include two mainly coupled parts: one is macroscopic fluid part, which is governed by the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations, another is radiation field part, which is described by the transport equation of photons. Under the two physical approximations: "gray" approximation and P1 approximation, one can derive the so-called Navier-Stokes-Fourier-P1 approximation radiation hydrodynamics model from the general one. In this paper we study the non-relativistic limit problem for the Navier-Stokes-Fourier-P1 approximation model due to the fact that the speed of light is much larger than the speed of the macroscopic fluid. Our results give a rigorous derivation of the widely used macroscopic model in radiation hydrodynamics.

Convergence of the complete electromagnetic fluid system to the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations

The full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations can be derived formally from the complete electromagnetic fluid system in some sense as the dielectric constant tends to zero. This process is usually referred as magnetohydrodynamic approximation in physical books. In this paper we justify this singular limit rigorously in the framework of smooth solutions for well-prepared initial data.

Convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations in a bounded domain

In this paper we establish the uniform estimates of strong solutions with respect to the Mach number and the dielectric constant to the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system in a bounded domain. Based on these uniform estimates, we obtain the convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations for well-prepared data.

Low Mach number limit for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data

The low Mach number limit for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data is rigorously justified in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$. The uniform in Mach number estimates of the solutions in a Sobolev space are obtained on a time interval independent of the Mach number. The limit is proved by using the established uniform estimates and a theorem due to Métiver and Schochet [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 158 (2001), 61-90] for the Euler equations that gives the local energy decay of the acoustic wave equations.

Incompressible limit of the non-isentropic ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations

We study the incompressible limit of the compressible non-isentropic ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$). We first establish the existence of classic solutions on a time interval independent of the Mach number. Then, by deriving uniform a priori estimates, we obtain the convergence of the solution to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero.

Low Mach number limit for the multi-dimensional Full magnetohydrodynamic equations

The low Mach number limit for the multi-dimensional full magnetohydrodynamic equations, in which the effect of thermal conduction is taken into account, is rigorously justified in the framework of classical solutions with small density and temperature variations. Moreover, we show that for sufficiently small Mach number, the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations admit a smooth solution on the time interval where the smooth solution of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations exists. In addition, the low Mach number limit for the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations with small entropy variation is also investigated. The convergence rates are obtained in both cases.
