Phase Diagram of the Square-Lattice $t$-$J$-$V$ Model for Electron-Doped Cuprates

Motivated by significant discrepancies between experimental observations of electron-doped cuprates and numerical results of the Hubbard and $t$-$J$ models, we investigate the role of inter-site interactions $V$ by studying the $t$-$J$-$V$ model on square lattices. Based on large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations, we identify the ground-state phase diagram across varying inter-site interactions $V$ and doping concentration $δ$. We find that the phase diagram with finite inter-site interactions $2\lesssim V/J\lesssim3$ offers a more accurate description of electron-doped cuprates than the conventional Hubbard and $t$-$J$ models. Moreover, we reveal the role of inter-site interactions $V$ at varying doping levels: at light doping, inter-site interactions favor Néel antiferromagnetic order, and suppress both superconductivity and charge density wave; around optimal doping, these interactions support a pseudogap-like phase while suppressing superconductivity, and we further perform the slave boson mean-field analysis to understand the numerical results microscopically; at higher doping, the effects of inter-site interactions become insignificant, with our numerical predictions suggesting the emergence of incommensurate spin density wave phase. Our specific focus around optimal doping with various inter-site interactions identifies successive phases including phase separation, uniform $d$-wave SC and a pseudogap-like phase, and reveals a relative insensitivity of charge density wave to superconductivity. Our study suggests the $t$-$J$-$V$ model as the minimal model to capture the essential physics of the electron-doped cuprates.

Intention Action Anticipation Model with Guide-Feedback Loop Mechanism

Anticipating human intention from videos has broad applications, such as automatic driving, robot assistive technology, and virtual reality. This study addresses the problem of intention action anticipation using egocentric video sequences to estimate actions that indicate human intention. We propose a Hierarchical Complete-Recent (HCR) information fusion model that makes full use of the features of the entire video sequence (i.e., complete features) and the features of the video tail sequence (i.e., recent features). The HCR model has two primary mechanisms. The Guide-Feedback Loop (GFL) mechanism is proposed to model the relation between one recent feature and one complete feature. Based on GFL, the MultiComplete-Recent Feature Aggregation (MCRFA) module is proposed to model the relation of one recent feature with multiscale complete features. Based on GFL and MCRFA, the HCR model can hierarchically explore the rich interrelationships between multiscale complete features and multiscale recent features. Through comparative and ablation experiments, we validate the effectiveness of our model on two well-known public datasets: EPIC-Kitchens and EGTEA Gaze+.

Theoretical Prediction of Non-Hermitian Skin Effect in Ultracold Atom Systems

Non-Hermitian skin effect, which refers to the phenomenon that an extensive number of eigenstates are localized at the boundary, has been widely studied in lattice models and experimentally observed in several classical systems. In this work, we predict that the existence of the non-Hermitian skin effect in the dissipative ultracold fermions with spin-orbit coupling, a continuous model that has been implemented by the Hong-Kong group in a recent experiment. This skin effect is robust against the variation of external parameters and trapping potentials. We further reveal a dynamic sticky effect in our system, which has a common physical origin with the non-Hermitian skin effect. Our work paves the way for studying novel physical responses of non-Hermitian skin effect in quantum systems.

Tunable vortex Majorana modes controlled by strain in homogeneous LiFeAs

The iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) have recently emerged as a promising single-material Majorana platform by hosting isolated Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at relatively high temperatures. To further verify its Majorana nature and move forward to build topological quantum qubit, it is highly desirable to achieve tunability for MZMs on homogeneous FeSCs. Here, with an in-situ strain device, we can controllably create MZMs on the homogeneous surface of stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs by inducing a topological phase transition. The evolution of discrete energy modes inside a strained vortex is found to mimics exactly as the predicted topological vortex case, proving the Majorana nature of emerging zero modes of vortex. Such tunability of MZMs in a homogeneous superconductor is an important step toward their application in topological quantum computation.

Atomic line defects and topological superconductivity in unconventional superconductors

Topological superconductors (TSCs) are correlated quantum states with simultaneous off-diagonal long-range order and nontrivial topological invariants. They produce gapless or zero energy boundary excitations, including Majorana zero modes and chiral Majorana edge states with topologically protected phase coherence essential for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Candidate TSCs are very rare in nature. Here, we propose a novel route toward emergent quasi-one-dimensional (1D) TSCs in naturally embedded quantum structures such as atomic line defects in unconventional spin-singlet $s$-wave and $d$-wave superconductors. We show that inversion symmetry breaking and charge transfer due to the missing atoms lead to the occupation of incipient impurity bands and mixed parity spin singlet and triplet Cooper pairing of neighboring electrons traversing the line defect. Nontrivial topological invariants arise and occupy a large part of the parameter space, including the time reversal symmetry breaking Zeeman coupling due to applied magnetic field or defect-induced magnetism, creating TSCs in different topological classes with robust Majorana zero modes at both ends of the line defect. Beyond providing a novel mechanism for the recent discovery of zero-energy bound states at both ends of an atomic line defect in monolayer Fe(Te,Se) superconductors, the findings pave the way for new material realizations of the simplest and most robust 1D TSCs using embedded quantum structures in unconventional superconductors with large pairing energy gaps and high transition temperatures.

Electronic structure and two-band superconductivity in unconventional high-$T_c$ cuprates Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$

The recently discovered cuprate superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ exhibits a high $T_c\simeq73$K at $δ\simeq0.2$. The polycrystal grown under high pressure has a structure similar to La$_2$CuO$_4$, but with dramatically different lattice parameters due to the CuO$_6$ octahedron compression. The crystal field in the compressed Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ leads to an inverted Cu $3d$ $e_g$ complex with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital sitting below the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and an electronic structure highly unusual compared to the conventional cuprates. We construct a two-orbital Hubbard model for the Cu $d^9$ state at hole doping $x=2δ$ and study the orbital-dependent strong correlation and superconductivity. For the undoped case at $x=0$, we found that strong correlation drives an orbital-polarized Mott insulating state with the spin-$1/2$ moment of the localized $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital. In contrast to the single-band cuprates where superconductivity is suppressed in the overdoped regime, hole doping the two-orbital Mott insulator leads to orbital-dependent correlations and the robust spin and orbital exchange interactions produce a high-$T_c$ antiphase $d$-wave superconductor even in the heavily doped regime at $x=0.4$. We conjecture that Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ realizes mixtures of such heavily hole-doped superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ and disordered Ba$_2$CuO$_{3}$ chains in a single-layer or predominately separated bilayer structure. Our findings suggest that unconventional cuprates with liberated orbitals as doped two-band Mott insulators can be a direction for realizing high-T$_c$ superconductivity with enhanced transition temperature $T_c$.

Correlated insulating phases of twisted bilayer graphene at commensurate filling fractions: a Hartree-Fock study

Motivated by the recently observed insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene, we study the nature of the correlated insulating phases of the twisted bilayer graphene at commensurate filling fractions. We use the continuum model and project the Coulomb interaction onto the flat bands to study the ground states by using a Hartree-Fock approximation. In the absence of the hexagonal boron nitride substrate, the ground states are the intervalley coherence states at charge neutrality (filling $ν$ = 0, or four electrons per moiré cell) and at $ν$ = -1/4 and -1/2 (three and two electrons per cell, respectively) and the $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry-broken state at $ν$= -3/4 (one electron per cell). The hexagonal boron nitride substrate drives the ground states at all $ν$ into $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry broken-states. Our results provide good reference points for further study of the rich correlated physics in the twisted bilayer graphene.

$β$-CuI: a Dirac semimetal without surface Fermi arcs

Anomalous surface states with Fermi arcs are commonly considered to be a fingerprint of Dirac semimetals (DSMs). In contrast to Weyl semimetals, however, Fermi arcs of DSMs are not topologically protected. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that $β$-CuI is a peculiar DSM whose surface states form closed Fermi pockets instead of Fermi arcs. In such a fermiological Dirac semimetal, the deformation mechanism from Fermi arcs to Fermi pockets stems from a large cubic term preserving all crystal symmetries, and the small energy difference between the surface and bulk Dirac points. The cubic term in $β$-CuI, usually negligible in prototypical DSMs, becomes relevant because of the particular crystal structure. As such, we establish a concrete material example manifesting the lack of topological protection for surface Fermi arcs in DSMs

Sr and Mn co-doped LaCuSO: A wide band gap oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor with TC around 200K

Here we report the synthesis of a bulk oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) system La1-xSrxCu0.925Mn0.075SO (x=0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1). As a wide band gap p-type oxide semiconductor, LaCuSO satisfies all the conditions forecasted theoretically to be a room temperature DMS. The Curie temperature (TC) is around 200K as x>0.05, which is among the highest TC record of known bulk DMS materials up to now. The system provides a rare example of oxide DMS system with p-type conduction, which is important for formation of high temperature spintronic devices.

Electronic structure of vacancy-ordered iron-selenide K$_{0.5}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_2$

The electronic structure of the vacancy-ordered K$_{0.5}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_2$ iron-selenide compound (278 phase) is studied using the first-principles density functional method. The ground state of the 278 phase is stripe-like antiferromagnetic, and its bare electron susceptibility shows a large peak around $(π, π)$ in the folded Brillouin zone. Near Fermi level, the density of states are dominated by the Fe-3d orbitals, and both electron-like and hole-like Fermi surfaces appear in the Brillouin zone. Unfolded band structure shows limited similarities to a hole doped 122 phase. With 0.1e electron doping, the susceptibility peak is quickly suppressed and broadened; while the two-dimensionality of the electron-like Fermi surfaces are greatly enhanced, resulting in a better nesting behavior. Our study should be relevant to the recently reported superconducting phase K$_{0.5+x}$Fe$_{1.75+y}$Se$_2$ with both $x$ and $y$ very tiny.

Fractional quantum Hall states in two-dimensional electron systems with anisotropic interactions

We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three phases of the Laughlin liquid, Hall-smectic-like, and crystal phases the ground state of the anisotropic Coulomb system can be well described by a family of model wave functions generated by an anisotropic projection Hamiltonian. We discuss the relevance of the results to the geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states proposed by Haldane [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 116801 (2011)].

Global phase diagram of three-dimensional extended Boson Hubbard model - a continuous time Quantum Monte Carlo study

We present the global phase diagram of the extended boson Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice by quantum Monte Carlo simulation with worm update algorithm. Four kinds of phases are supported by this model, including superfluid, supersolid, Mott, and charge density wave (CDW) states, which are identified in the phase diagram of chemical potential $μ$ versus nearest neighbor interaction V . By changing the chemical potential, a continuous transition is found from the Mott phase to a superfluid phase without breaking the translational symmetry. For an insulating CDW state, adding particles to it gives rise to a continuous transition to a supersolid phase, while removing particles usually leads to a first-order one to either supersolid or superfluid phase. By tuning the nearest neighbor interaction, one can realize the transition between two insulating phases, Mott and CDW with the same particle density, which turns out to be of the first-order. We also demonstrate that a supersolid phase with average particle density less than 1/2 can exist in a small region of $μ$ - V phase diagram.

Self doping effect and successive magnetic transitions in superconducting Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$

We have studied a quinary Fe-based superconductor Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$ by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, Mössbauer spectrum, resistivity, magnetization and specific heat. This apparently undoped oxyarsenide is shown to be self doped via electron transfer from the V$^{3+}$ ions. We observed successive magnetic transitions within the VO$_2$ layers: an antiferromagnetic transition at 150 K followed by a weak ferromagnetic transition at 55 K. The spin orderings within the VO$_2$ planes are discussed based on mixed valence of V$^{3+}$ and V$^{4+}$.
