Parallels between the dynamics at the noise-perturbed onset of chaos in logistic maps and the dynamics of glass formation

We develop the characterization of the dynamics at the noise-perturbed edge of chaos in logistic maps in terms of the quantities normally used to describe glassy properties in structural glass formers. Following the recognition [Phys. Lett. \textbf{A 328}, 467 (2004)] that the dynamics at this critical attractor exhibits analogies with that observed in thermal systems close to vitrification, we determine the modifications that take place with decreasing noise amplitude in ensemble and time averaged correlations and in diffusivity. We corroborate explicitly the occurrence of two-step relaxation, aging with its characteristic scaling property, and subdiffusion and arrest for this system. We also discuss features that appear to be specific of the map.

Linear instability and statistical laws of physics

We show that a meaningful statistical description is possible in conservative and mixing systems with zero Lyapunov exponent in which the dynamical instability is only linear in time. More specifically, (i) the sensitivity to initial conditions is given by $ ξ=[1+(1-q)λ_q t]^{1/(1-q)}$ with $q=0$; (ii) the statistical entropy $S_q=(1-\sum_i p_i^q)/(q-1) (S_1=-\sum_i p_i \ln p_i)$ in the infinitely fine graining limit (i.e., $W\equiv$ {\it number of cells into which the phase space has been partitioned} $\to\infty$), increases linearly with time only for $q=0$; (iii) a nontrivial, $q$-generalized, Pesin-like identity is satisfied, namely the $\lim_{t \to \infty} \lim_{W \to \infty} S_0(t)/t=\max\{λ_0\}$. These facts (which are in analogy to the usual behaviour of strongly chaotic systems with $q=1$), seem to open the door for a statistical description of conservative many-body nonlinear systems whose Lyapunov spectrum vanishes.

Nonextensive Pesin identity. Exact renormalization group analytical results for the dynamics at the edge of chaos of the logistic map

We show that the dynamical and entropic properties at the chaos threshold of the logistic map are naturally linked through the nonextensive expressions for the sensitivity to initial conditions and for the entropy. We corroborate analytically, with the use of the Feigenbaum renormalization group(RG) transformation, the equality between the generalized Lyapunov coefficient $λ_{q}$ and the rate of entropy production $K_{q}$ given by the nonextensive statistical mechanics. Our results advocate the validity of the $q$-generalized Pesin identity at critical points of one-dimensional nonlinear dissipative maps.

Anomalous sensitivity to initial conditions and entropy production in standard maps: Nonextensive approach

We perform a throughout numerical study of the average sensitivity to initial conditions and entropy production for two symplectically coupled standard maps focusing on the control-parameter region close to regularity. Although the system is ultimately strongly chaotic (positive Lyapunov exponents), it first stays lengthily in weak-chaotic regions (zero Lyapunov exponents). We argue that the nonextensive generalization of the classical formalism is an adequate tool in order to get nontrivial information about this complex phenomenon. Within this context we analyze the relation between the power-law sensitivity to initial conditions and the entropy production.

Quasi-stationary states in low-dimensional Hamiltonian systems

We address a simple connection between results of Hamiltonian nonlinear dynamical theory and thermostatistics. Using a properly defined dynamical temperature in low-dimensional symplectic maps, we display and characterize long-standing quasi-stationary states that eventually cross over to a Boltzmann-Gibbs-like regime. As time evolves, the geometrical properties (e.g., fractal dimension) of the phase space change sensibly, and the duration of the anomalous regime diverges with decreasing chaoticity. The scenario that emerges is consistent with the nonextensive statistical mechanics one.

Ubiquity of metastable-to-stable crossover in weakly chaotic dynamical systems

We present a comparative study of several dynamical systems of increasing complexity, namely, the logistic map with additive noise, one, two and many globally-coupled standard maps, and the Hamiltonian Mean Field model (i.e., the classical inertial infinitely-ranged ferromagnetically coupled XY spin model). We emphasize the appearance, in all of these systems, of metastable states and their ultimate crossover to the equilibrium state. We comment on the underlying mechanisms responsible for these phenomena (weak chaos) and compare common characteristics. We point out that this ubiquitous behavior appears to be associated to the features of the nonextensive generalization of the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics.

Introduction to Nonextensive Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics

In this lecture we briefly review the definition, consequences and applications of an entropy, $S_q$, which generalizes the usual Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy $S_{BG}$ ($S_1=S_{BG}$), basis of the usual statistical mechanics, well known to be applicable whenever ergodicity is satisfied at the microscopic dynamical level. Such entropy $S_q$ is based on the notion of $q$-exponential and presents properties not shared by other available alternative generalizations of $S_{BG}$. The thermodynamics proposed in this way is generically {\it nonextensive} in a sense that will be qualified. The present framework seems to describe quite well a vast class of natural and artificial systems which are not ergodic nor close to it. The a priori calculation of $q$ is necessary to complete the theory and we present some models where this has already been achieved.

Zeroth principle of thermodynamics in aging quasistationary states

We show that the zeroth principle of thermodynamics applies to aging quasistationary states of long-range interacting $N$-body Hamiltonian systems. We also discuss the measurability of the temperature in these out-of-equilibrium states using a {\it short-range} interacting thermometer. As many connections are already established between such quasistationary states and nonextensive statistical mechanics, our results are the first evidence that such basic concepts apply to systems that the nonextensive formalism aims to describe.

Mixing and equilibration: Protagonists in the scene of nonextensive statistical mechanics

After a brief review of the present status of nonextensive statistical mechanics, we present a conjectural scenario where mixing (characterized by the entropic index $q_{mix} \le 1$) and equilibration (characterized by the entropic index $q_{eq} \ge 1$) play central and inter-related roles, and appear to determine {\it a priori} the values of the relevant indices of the formalism. Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics is recovered as the $q_{mix}=q_{eq}=1$ particular case.

Nonstandard mixing in the standard map

The standard map is a paradigmatic one-parameter (noted $a$) two-dimensional conservative map which displays both chaotic and regular regions. This map becomes integrable for $a=0$. For $a \ne 0$ it can be numerically shown that the usual, Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy $S_1(t)=-\sum_{i} p_i(t)\ln{p_i(t)}$ exhibits a {\it linear} time evolution whose slope hopefully converges, for very fine graining, to the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. However, for increasingly small values of $a$, an increasingly large time interval emerges, {\it before} that stage, for which {\it linearity} with $t$ is obtained only for the generalized nonextensive entropic form $S_q(t)=\frac{1-\sum_{i}[p_i(t)]^{q}}{q-1}$ with $q = q^*\simeq 0.3$. This anomalous regime corresponds in some sense to a power-law (instead of exponential) mixing. This scenario might explain why in isolated classical long-range $N$-body Hamiltonians, and depending on the initial conditions, a metastable state (whose duration diverges with $1/N\to 0$) is observed before it crosses over to the BG regime.

Mixing and approach to equilibrium in the standard map

For a paradigmatic case, the standard map, we discuss how the statistical description of the approach to equilibrium is related to the sensitivity to the initial conditions of the system. Using a numerical analysis we present an anomalous scenario that may give some insight on the foundations of the Tsallis' statistical mechanics.
