Neutrino-based tools for nuclear verification and diplomacy in North Korea

We present neutrino-based options for verifying that the nuclear reactors at North Korea's Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center are no longer operating or that they are operating in an agreed manner, precluding weapons production. Neutrino detectors may be a mutually agreeable complement to traditional verification protocols because they do not require access inside reactor buildings, could be installed collaboratively, and provide persistent and specific observations. At Yongbyon, neutrino detectors could passively verify reactor shutdowns or monitor power levels and plutonium contents, all from outside the reactor buildings. The monitoring options presented here build on recent successes in basic particle physics. Following a dedicated design study, these tools could be deployed in as little as one year at a reasonable cost. In North Korea, cooperative deployment of neutrino detectors could help redirect a limited number of scientists and engineers from military applications to peaceful technical work in an international community. Opportunities for scientific collaboration with South Korea are especially strong. We encourage policymakers to consider collaborative neutrino projects within a broader program of action toward stability and security on the Korean Peninsula.

Neutrino-Antineutrino Identification in a Liquid Scintillator Detector: Towards a Novel Decay-at-Rest-based Neutrino CPV Framework

We introduce a novel approach to investigate CP violation in the neutrino sector, based on the simultaneous detection of $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ stemming from the oscillation of $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ produced in the decay at rest of $π$s and $μ$s at a beam dump. This approach relies on a novel liquid scintillator detector technology expected to yield unprecedented identification of $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ charged-current interactions, which we investigate by means of Montecarlo simulations. Here we report preliminary results concerning both the detection technique and its physics reach.

Hunt for Sterile Neutrinos: Decay at Rest Experiments

In the standard model of the elementary particles, the number of neutrino flavor is three. However, there have been indications of existence of 4th neutrino, called sterile neutrino, in some neutrino oscillation related experiments. A number of experiments are planned to test whether such indications are true or not. Among them, experiments which use neutrinos from pi+, K+, mu+ decay at rest (DAR) are promising because the energy spectra of neutrinos are very well known and clean oscillation measurements are possible. In this proceedings, properties of such DAR neutrinos and LSND, JSNS2, OscSNS and KPipe experiments are briefly introduced.

A High Precision Reactor Neutrino Detector for the Double Chooz Experiment

Double Chooz is a reactor neutrino experiment which investigates the last neutrino mixing angle; theta-13. It is necessary to measure reactor neutrino disappearance with precision 1% or better to detect finite value of theta-13. This requirement is the most strict compared to other reactor neutrino experiments performed so far. The Double Chooz experiment makes use of a number of techniques to reduce the possible errors to achieve the sensitivity. The detector is now under construction and it is expected to take first neutrino data in 2009 and to measure sin^22theta-13 with a sensitivity of 0.03 (90%C.L.) In this proceedings, the technical concepts of Double Chooz detector are explained stressing on how it copes with the systematic errors.
