Running Spectral Index from Large-field Inflation with Modulations Revisited

We revisit large field inflation models with modulations in light of the recent discovery of the primordial B-mode polarization by the BICEP2 experiment, which, when combined with the Planck + WP + highL data, gives a strong hint for additional suppression of the CMB temperature fluctuations at small scales. Such a suppression can be explained by a running spectral index. In fact, it was pointed out by two of the present authors (TK and FT) that the existence of both tensor mode perturbations and a sizable running of the spectral index is a natural outcome of large inflation models with modulations. We find that this holds also in the recently proposed multi-natural inflation, in which the inflaton potential consists of multiple sinusoidal functions and therefore the modulations are a built-in feature.

Kinetic Term Anarchy for Polynomial Chaotic Inflation

We argue that there may arise a relatively flat inflaton potential over super-Planckian field values with an approximate shift symmetry, if the coefficients of the kinetic terms for many singlet scalars are subject to a certain random distribution. The inflaton potential generically contains various shift-symmetry breaking terms, leading to a possibly large deviation of the predicted values of the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio from those of the simple quadratic chaotic inflation. We revisit a polynomial chaotic inflation in supergravity as such.

Higgs Chaotic Inflation and the Primordial B-mode Polarization Discovered by BICEP2

We show that the standard model Higgs field can realize the quadratic chaotic inflation, if the kinetic term is significantly modified at large field values. This is a simple realization of the so-called running kinetic inflation. The point is that the Higgs field respects an approximate shift symmetry at high energy scale. The tensor-to-scalar ratio is predicted to be $r \simeq 0.13 - 0.16$, which nicely explains the primordial B-mode polarization, $r=0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$, recently discovered by the BICEP2 experiment. In particular, allowing small modulations induced by the shift symmetry breaking, the negative running spectral index can also be induced. The reheating temperature is expected to be so high that successful thermal leptogenesis is possible. The suppressed quartic coupling of the Higgs field at high energy scales may be related to the Higgs chaotic inflation.

Relaxing Isocurvature Bounds on String Axion Dark Matter

If inflation scale is high, light scalars acquire large quantum fluctuations during inflation. If sufficiently long-lived, they will give rise to CDM isocurvature perturbations, which are highly constrained by the Planck data. Focusing on string axions as such light scalars, we show that thermal inflation can provide a sufficiently large entropy production to dilute the CDM isocurvature perturbations. Importantly, efficient dilution is possible for the string axions, because effectively no secondary coherent oscillations are induced at the end of thermal inflation, in contrast to the moduli fields. We also study the viability of the axion dark matter with mass of about 7 keV as the origin of the 3.5 keV X-ray line excess, in the presence of large entropy production.

Multi-Natural Inflation

We propose a multi-natural inflation model in which the single-field inflaton potential consists of two or more sinusoidal potentials that are comparable in size, but have different periodicity with a possible non-zero relative phase. The model is versatile enough to realize both large-field and small-field inflation. We show that, in a model with two sinusoidal potentials, the predicted values of the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio lie within the $1σ$ region of the Planck data. In particular, there is no lower bound on the decay constants in contrast to the original natural inflation. We also show that, in a certain limit, multi-natural inflation can be approximated by a hilltop quartic inflation model.

Extra light fermions in $E_6$-inspired models and the 3.5 keV X-ray line signal

We propose a scenario in which extra light fermions in an $E_6$-inspired U(1) extension of the standard model constitute the dark matter, as a simple variation of our model for dark radiation presented in 2010. Interestingly, for the light fermions of mass about 7 keV, they radiatively decay into active neutrinos and photons with a lifetime in the range of $10^{27}-10^{28}$ seconds, which naturally explains the recently discovered 3.5 keV X-ray line signal.

Multi-Natural Inflation in Supergravity

We show that the recently proposed multi-natural inflation can be realized within the framework of 4D ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity. The inflaton potential mainly consists of two sinusoidal potentials that are comparable in size, but have different periodicity with a possible non-zero relative phase. For a sub-Planckian decay constant, the multi-natural inflation model is reduced to axion hilltop inflation. We show that, taking into account the effect of the relative phase, the spectral index can be increased to give a better fit to the Planck results, with respect to the hilltop quartic inflation. We also consider a possible UV completion based on a string-inspired model. Interestingly, the Hubble parameter during inflation is necessarily smaller than the gravitino mass, avoiding possible moduli destabilization. Reheating processes as well as non-thermal leptogenesis are also discussed.

Sneutrino Chaotic Inflation and Landscape

The most naive interpretation of the BICEP2 data is the chaotic inflation by an inflaton with a quadratic potential. When combined with supersymmetry, we argue that the inflaton plays the role of right-handed scalar neutrino based on rather general considerations. The framework suggests that the right-handed sneutrino tunneled from a false vacuum in a landscape to our vacuum with a small negative curvature and suppressed scalar perturbations at large scales.

Gravitino Problem in Supergravity Chaotic Inflation and SUSY Breaking Scale after BICEP2

Gravitinos are generically produced by inflaton decays, which place tight constraints on inflation models as well as supersymmetry breaking scale. We revisit the gravitino production from decays of the inflaton and the supersymmetry breaking field, based on a chaotic inflation model suggested by the recent BICEP2 result. We study cosmological constraints on thermally and non-thermally produced gravitinos for a wide range of the gravitino mass, and show that there are only three allowed regions of the gravitino mass: $m_{3/2}\lesssim 16$eV, $m_{3/2}\simeq 10$--$1000$TeV and $m_{3/2}\gtrsim 10^{13}$GeV.

Multi-Natural Inflation in Supergravity and BICEP2

We revisit the recently proposed multi-natural inflation and its realization in supergravity in light of the BICEP2 results. Multi-natural inflation is a single-field inflation model where the inflaton potential consists of multiple sinusoidal functions, and it is known that a sizable running spectral index can be generated, which relaxes the tension between the BICEP2 and the Planck results. In this paper we show that multi-natural inflation can accommodate a wide range of values of $(n_s, r)$, including the spectral index close to or even above unity. This will be be favored if the tension is resolved by other sources such as dark radiation, hot dark matter, or non-zero neutrino mass. We also discuss the implications for the implementation in string theory.

U(1)$_{B-L}$ Symmetry Restoration and Effective Neutrino Species

The U(1)$_{B-L}$ symmetry could be restored during inflation, since the BICEP2 results suggest a GUT-scale inflation with the Hubble parameter, $H_{\rm inf} \simeq 10^{14}$ GeV, close to the U(1)$_{B-L}$ breaking scale. We consider a scenario in which the ${B-L}$ Higgs field dominates the Universe after inflation, and mainly decays into the U(1)$_{B-L}$ gauge bosons, whose subsequent decays reheat the Universe. Interestingly, if one of the right-handed neutrinos is extremely light and behaves as dark radiation or hot dark matter, its abundance is determined by the $B-L$ charge assignment and the relativistic degree of freedom in plasma. We find that $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ takes discrete values between $0.188$ and $0.220$ in the standard model plus three right-handed neutrinos, depending on whether the decay into heavier right-handed neutrinos are kinematically accessible or not. In the fiveness U(1)$_{\bf 5}$ case, we find that $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ takes discrete values between $0.313$ and $0.423$. The tension between BICEP2 and {\it Planck} can be partially relaxed by dark radiation.

Anomaly-free flavor models for Nambu-Goldstone bosons and the 3.5 keV X-ray line signal

We pursue a possibility that a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson is lurking around or below the intermediate scale. To this end we consider an anomaly-free global flavor symmetry, and construct models where the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson is coupled preferentially to leptons. The experimental and astrophysical bounds derived from couplings to photons and nucleons are significantly relaxed. If sufficiently light, the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson contributes to dark matter, and interestingly, it generally decays into photons through couplings arising from threshold corrections. We show that the recent hint for the X-ray line at about $3.5$ keV can be explained by the decay of such pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of mass about $7$ keV with the decay constant of order $10^{10}$ GeV, if the electron is charged under the flavor symmetry.

The 3.5 keV X-ray line signal from decaying moduli with low cutoff scale

The recent unidentified 3.5 keV X-ray line signal can be explained by decaying moduli dark matter with a cutoff scale one order of magnitude smaller than the Planck scale. We show that such modulus field with the low cutoff scale follows a time-dependent potential minimum and its abundance is reduced by the adiabatic suppression mechanism. As a result the modulus abundance can naturally be consistent with the observed dark matter abundance without any fine-tuning of the initial oscillation amplitude.

The 7 keV axion dark matter and the X-ray line signal

We propose a scenario where the saxion dominates the energy density of the Universe and reheats the standard model sector via the dilatonic coupling, while its axionic partner contributes to dark matter decaying into photons via the same operator in supersymmetry. Interestingly, for the axion mass $m_a \simeq 7$keV and the decay constant $f_a \simeq 10^{14-15}$GeV, the recently discovered X-ray line at $3.5$keV in the XMM Newton X-ray observatory data can be explained. We discuss various cosmological aspects of the $7$keV axion dark matter such as the production of axion dark matter, the saxion decay process, hot dark matter and isocurvature constraints on the axion dark matter, and the possible baryogenesis scenarios.

7 keV sterile neutrino dark matter from split flavor mechanism

The recently discovered X-ray line at about $3.5\,$keV can be explained by sterile neutrino dark matter with mass, $m_s \simeq 7\,$keV, and the mixing, $\sin^2 2θ\sim 10^{-10}$. Such sterile neutrino is more long-lived than estimated based on the seesaw formula, which strongly suggests an extra flavor structure in the seesaw sector. We show that one can explain both the small mass and the longevity based on the split flavor mechanism where the breaking of flavor symmetry is tied to the breaking of the $B-L$ symmetry. In a supersymmetric case we find that the $7\,$keV sterile neutrino implies the gravitino mass about $100\,$TeV.

Chaotic Inflation with Right-handed Sneutrinos after Planck

We propose a chaotic inflation model in which the lightest right-handed sneutrino serves as the inflaton and the predicted values of the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio are consistent with the Planck data. Interestingly, the observed magnitude of primordial density perturbations is naturally explained by the inflaton mass of order $10^{13}$GeV, which is close to the right-handed neutrino mass scale suggested by the seesaw mechanism and the neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that the agreement of the two scales becomes even better in the neutrino mass anarchy. We show that the inflation model can be embedded into supergravity and discuss thermal history of the Universe after inflation such as non-thermal leptogenesis by the right-handed sneutrino decays and the modulus dynamics.

Moduli-induced Baryogenesis

We study a scenario for baryogenesis in modular cosmology and discuss its implications for the moduli stabilization mechanism and the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scale. If moduli fields dominate the Universe and decay into the standard model particles through diatonic couplings, the right amount of baryon asymmetry can be generated through CP violating decay of gluino into quark and squark followed by baryon-number violating squark decay. We find that, in the KKLT-type moduli stabilization, at least two non-perturbative terms are required to obtain a sizable CP phase, and that the successful baryogenesis is possible for the soft SUSY breaking mass heavier than O(1) TeV. A part of the parameter space for successful baryogenesis can be probed at the collider experiments, dinucleon decay search experiment, and the measurements of electric dipole moments of neutron and electron. It is also shown that similar baryogenesis works in the case of the gravitino- or the saxion-dominated Universe.

Suppressing Isocurvature Perturbations of QCD Axion Dark Matter

We propose a novel mechanism to suppress the isocurvature perturbations of the QCD axion. The point is that the QCD interactions become strong at an intermediate or high energy scale in the very early Universe, if the Higgs field has a sufficiently large expectation value. The effective QCD scale can be even higher in the presence of extra colored particles. We show that the QCD axion then becomes so heavy during inflation that its isocurvature perturbations are significantly suppressed, thereby relaxing the constraint on the inflation scale.
