Quantum Gates from Wolfram Model Multiway Rewriting Systems

We show how representations of finite-dimensional quantum operators can be constructed using nondeterministic rewriting systems. In particular, we investigate Wolfram model multiway rewriting systems based on string substitutions. Multiway systems were proposed by S. Wolfram as generic model systems for multicomputational processes, emphasizing their significance as a foundation for modeling complexity, nondeterminism, and branching structures of measurement outcomes. Here, we investigate a specific class of multiway systems based on cyclic character strings with a neighborhood constraint - the latter called Leibnizian strings. We show that such strings exhibit a Fermi-Dirac distribution for expectation values of occupation numbers of character neighborhoods. A Leibnizian string serves as an abstraction of a $N$-fermion system. A multiway system of these strings encodes causal relations between rewriting events in a nondeterministic manner. The collection of character strings realizes a $\mathbb{Z}$-module with a symmetric $\mathbb{Z}$-bilinear form. For discrete spaces, this generalizes the notion of an inner product over a vector field. This admits a discrete analogue of the path integral and a $S$-matrix for multiway systems of Leibnizian strings. The elements of this $S$-matrix yield transition amplitudes between states of the multiway system based on an action defined over a sequence of Leibnizian strings. We then show that these $S$-matrices give explicit representations of quantum gates for qubits and qudits, and also circuits composed of such gates. We find that, as formal models of nondeterministic computation, rewriting systems of Leibnizian strings with causal structure encode representations of the CNOT, $π/8$, and Hadamard gates. Hence, using multiway systems one can represent quantum circuits for qubits.

Classification of Killing Magnetic Curves In H^3

In this paper, we study classification of magnetic curves corresponding to Killing vector fields of H^3 (hyperbolic 3-space). First, we solve the geodesic equation analytically. Then we calculate the trajectories generated by all the six Killing vector fields, which are considered as magnetic field vectors, by using perturbation method up to first order with respect to the strength of the magnetic field. We present a comparison of our solution with the numerical solution for one case. We also prove that 3-dimensional (α)-Kenmotsu manifolds cannot have any magnetic vector field in the direction of their Reeb vector fields.

On the Non-Existence of Unbounded Discrete Space-Time

$n$-scales are a generalization of time-scales that has been put forward to unify continuous and discrete analyses in higher dimensions. In this paper we investigate massive scalar field theory on a regular $n$-Scale. We have given the modified field equation that is appropriate to this space-time structure and gave the mode solutions. If the space-time is discrete we have found that no massive scalar field can exist. Hence, we concluded that unbounded discrete space-time cannot exist. If discrete space-time exists, it has to be bounded in each dimension.

Gravitational collapse of thin shell of dust in shape dynamics

We studied the gravitational collapse of a shell of dust in shape dynamics. We found out static and oscillatory solutions. In the large momentum limit we found out that the shell never reaches the singularity when the momentum of the shell is much larger than the mass of the shell in magnitude. The shell does not reach to the origin in a finite amount of time however when the momentum of the shell becomes comparable to minus the mass of shell, the large momentum approximation breaks down. Therefore more detailed future works hopefully may be able to answer the question of singularity formation in this setup.

Bohmian Field Theory on a Shape Dynamics Background and Unruh Effect

In this paper, we investigate the Unruh radiation in the Bohmian field theory on a shape dynamics background setting. Since metric and metric momentum are real quantities, the integral kernel to invert the Lichnerowicz-York equation for first order deviations due to existence of matter terms turns out to be real. This fact makes the interaction Hamiltonian real. On the other hand, the only contribution to guarantee the existence of Unruh radiation has to come from the imaginary part of the temporal part of the wave functional. We have proved the existence of Unruh radiation in this setting. It is also important that we have found the Unruh radiation via an Unruh-DeWitt detector in a theory where there is no Lorentz symmetry and no conventional space-time structure.

Emergence of Space in Quantum Shape Kinematics

A model universe is analyzed with $N$ protons and electrons where there are electromagnetic and spin interactions in the Hamiltonian is investigated in the context of quantum shape kinematics. We have found that quantum shape space exists for $N\geq 4$ particles and has $2N-7$ functional degrees of freedom in the case of spin-1/2 particles. The emergence of space is associated with non-vanishing expectation value $\langle L^2 \rangle$. We have shown that for odd $N$ space always emerges, and for large even $N$ space almost always emerges because $\langle L^2 \rangle \neq 0$ for almost all states. In the limit $N\to\infty$ the density of states that yields $\langle L^2 \rangle=0$ vanishes. Therefore we conclude that the space is almost always emergent in quantum shape kinematics.

The Firewall Paradox

In this MSc. thesis, we have attempted to give an overview of the firewall paradox and various approaches towards its resolution. After an introductory chapter on some basic concepts in quantum field theory in curved spacetimes such as Hawking radiation, we introduce the paradox. It arises out of application of principles each of which is thought or assumed to be correct: 1) unitary black hole evaporation, 2) validity of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, 3) a measure of the number of black hole quantum states, 4) Einstein's equivalence principle. Then, we present various approaches that exist in the literature towards the resolution of the paradox.

Quantum Jump from Singularity to Outside of Black Hole

Considering the role of black hole singularity in quantum evolution, a resolution to the firewall paradox is presented. It is emphasized that if an observer has the singularity as a part of his spacetime, then the semi-classical evolution would be non-unitary as viewed by him. Specifically, a free-falling observer inside the black hole would have a Hilbert space with non-unitary evolution; a quantum jump for particles encountering the singularity to outside of the horizon as late Hawking radiations. The non-unitariness in the jump resembles the one in collapse of wave function, but preserves entanglements. Accordingly, we elaborate the first postulate of black hole complementarity: freely falling observers who pass through the event horizon would have non-unitary evolution, while it does not have physically measurable effects for them. Besides, no information would be lost in the singularity. Taking the modified picture into account, the firewall paradox can be resolved, respecting No Drama. A by-product of our modification is that roughly half of the entropy of the black hole is released close to the end of evaporation in the shape of very hot Hawking radiation.

Quantum Shape Kinematics

Shape dynamics is a theory first proposed by Julian Barbour which states that physics happen uniquely in the reduced configuration space of a theory. So far, studies in the area have focused on gravitational systems. Here we first contemplate on the implications of this idea on quantum mechanics. We summarize the idea of shape dynamics and then give physical configurations of multi qubit systems. It is observed that inclusion of the spacetime curvature introduces a new qubit degree of freedom. This is a novel effect of general relativity on a quantum system. Our aim in the grand picture, is to initiate a research program translating classical shape dynamics to quantum realm.
