Metal-Enriched Neutral Gas Reservoir around a Strongly-lensed, Low-mass Galaxy at $z=4$ Identified by JWST/NIRISS and VLT/MUSE

Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at $z\gtrsim4$ provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the Universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), VLT/MUSE, and ALMA, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass ($\approx 10^{7.6}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) galaxy at $z=3.98$ (also see Vanzella et al. 2022). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including CIV $λ\lambda1548,1550$, HeII $\lambda1640$, OIII] $λ\lambda1661,1666$, [NeIII] $\lambda3868$, [OII] $\lambda3727$, and Balmer series of Hydrogen from this galaxy, indicating a metal-poor HII region ($\lesssim 0.12\ {\rm Z}_\odot$) powered by massive stars. Further, we detect a metal-enriched damped Ly$α$ system (DLA) associated with the galaxy with the HI column density of $N_{\rm{HI}}\approx 10^{21.8}$ cm$^{-2}$. The metallicity of the associated DLA may reach the super solar metallicity (${\gtrsim Z}_\odot$). Moreover, thanks to JWST and gravitational lensing, we present the resolved UV slope ($β$) map at the spatial resolution of $\approx 100$ pc at $z=4$, with steep UV slopes reaching $β\approx -2.5$ around three star-forming clumps. Combining with low-redshift analogs, our observations suggest that low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies, which dominate reionization, could be surrounded by a high covering fraction of the metal-enriched, neutral-gaseous clouds. This implies that the metal enrichment of low-mass galaxies is highly efficient, and further support that in low-mass galaxies, only a small fraction of ionizing radiation can escape through the interstellar or circumgalactic channels with low column-density neutral gas.

The Identification of a Dusty Multiarm Spiral Galaxy at $z=3.06$ with JWST and ALMA

Spiral arms serve crucial purposes in star formation and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we report the identification of A2744-DSG-$z3$, a dusty, multiarm spiral galaxy at $z=3.059$ using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS imaging and grism spectroscopy. A2744-DSG-$z3$ was discovered as a gravitationally lensed sub-millimeter galaxy with ALMA. This is the most distant stellar spiral structure seen thus far, consistent with cosmological simulations which suggest $z\approx3$ as the epoch when spirals emerge. Thanks to the gravitational lensing and excellent spatial resolution of JWST, the spiral arms are resolved with a spatial resolution of $\approx290$\,pc. Based on SED fitting, the spiral galaxy has a de-lensed star formation rate of $85\pm30 \ M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and a stellar mass of $\approx10^{10.6}\ M_{\odot}$, indicating that A2744-DSG-$z3$ is a main-sequence galaxy. After fitting the spiral arms, we find a stellar effective radius ($R_{e, \rm{star}}$) of $5.0\pm1.5$ kpc. Combing with ALMA measurements, we find that the effective radii ratio between dust and stars is $\approx0.4$, similar to {those} of massive SFGs at $z\sim2$, indicating a compact dusty core in A2744-DSG-$z3$. Moreover, this galaxy appears to be living in a group environment: including A2744-DSG-$z3$, at least three galaxies at $z=3.05 - 3.06$ {are} spectroscopically confirmed by JWST/NIRISS and ALMA, residing within a lensing-corrected projected scale of $\approx 70$ kpc. This, along with the asymmetric brightness profile, further suggests that the spiral arms may be triggered by minor merger events at $z\gtrsim3$.

Multiple gas phases in supernova remnant IC 443: mapping shocked H$_2$ with VLT/KMOS

Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases. Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20 ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$γ$), and two [Fe II] lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $\sim 0.1$ pc down to $\sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions, which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them are associated with young stars. This sets challenges to the previously proposed scenario of triggered star formation by SNR shocks in IC~443.

(Nearly) Model-Independent Constraints on the Neutral Hydrogen Fraction in the Intergalactic Medium at $z\sim 5-7$ Using Dark Pixel Fractions in Ly$α$ and Ly$β$ Forests

Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral at $z>7$, and largely ionized by $z\sim5.5$. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model-dependent, and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI} \lesssim 10^{-3}$) or close to unity ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI}\sim 1$). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range of $z=6-7$ is poorly constrained. We present new constraints on $\bar{x}_{\rm HI}$ at $z\sim5.1-6.8$, by analyzing deep optical spectra of $53$ quasars at $5.73 6.1$ are consistent with the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the IGM derived from the Planck 2018.

Discovery of the most luminous quasar of the last 9 Gyr

We report the discovery of a bright (g = 14.5 mag (AB), K = 11.9 mag (Vega)) quasar at redshift z = 0.83 -- the optically brightest (unbeamed) quasar at z > 0.4. SMSS J114447.77-430859.3, at a Galactic latitude of b = +18.1deg, was identified by its optical colours from the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) during a search for symbiotic binary stars. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy reveals broad MgII, H-beta, H-alpha, and Pa-beta emission lines, from which we measure a black hole mass of log10(M_BH/M_Sun) = 9.4 +/- 0.5. With its high luminosity, L_bol = (4.7 +/- 1.0) * 10^47 erg/s or M_i(z=2) = -29.74 mag (AB), we estimate an Eddington ratio of ~1.4. As the most luminous quasar known over the last ~9 Gyr of cosmic history, having a luminosity 8 times greater than 3C 273, the source offers a range of potential follow-up opportunities.

The Dwarf Galaxy Population at $z\sim 0.7$: A Catalog of Emission Lines and Redshifts from Deep Keck Observations

We present a catalog of spectroscopically measured redshifts over $0 < z < 2$ and emission line fluxes for 1440 galaxies. The majority ($\sim$65\%) of the galaxies come from the HALO7D survey, with the remainder from the DEEPwinds program. This catalog includes redshifts for 646 dwarf galaxies with $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$. 810 catalog galaxies did not have previously published spectroscopic redshifts, including 454 dwarf galaxies. HALO7D used the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II telescope to take very deep (up to 32 hours exposure, with a median of $\sim$7 hours) optical spectroscopy in the COSMOS, EGS, GOODS-North, and GOODS-South CANDELS fields, and in some areas outside CANDELS. We compare our redshift results to existing spectroscopic and photometric redshifts in these fields, finding only a 1\% rate of discrepancy with other spectroscopic redshifts. We measure a small increase in median photometric redshift error (from 1.0\% to 1.3\%) and catastrophic outlier rate (from 3.5\% to 8\%) with decreasing stellar mass. We obtained successful redshift fits for 75\% of massive galaxies, and demonstrate a similar 70-75\% successful redshift measurement rate in $8.5 < \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$ galaxies, suggesting similar survey sensitivity in this low-mass range. We describe the redshift, mass, and color-magnitude distributions of the catalog galaxies, finding HALO7D galaxies representative of CANDELS galaxies up to \textit{i}-band magnitudes of 25. The catalogs presented will enable studies of star formation (SF), the mass-metallicity relation, SF-morphology relations, and other properties of the $z\sim0.7$ dwarf galaxy population.

The Physical Properties of Star-Forming Galaxies with Strong [O III] Lines at z=3.25

We present an analysis of physical properties of 34 [O III] emission-line galaxies (ELGs) at z=3.254$\pm$0.029 in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). These ELGs are selected from deep narrow H2S(1) and broad Ks imaging of 383 arcmin$^{2}$ obtained with CFHT/WIRCam. We construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from U to Ks to derive the physical properties of ELGs. These [O III] ELGs are identified as starburst galaxies with strong [O III] lines of L([O III]) ~ 10$^{42.6}$ - 10$^{44.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and have stellar masses of M* ~ 10$^{9.0}$-10$^{10.6}$ M$_\odot$ and star formation rates of ~ 10-210 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Our results show that 24% of our sample galaxies are dusty with Av > 1 mag and EW(OIII)$_{rest}$ ~ 70-500 $Å$, which are often missed in optically selected [O III] ELG samples. Their rest-frame UV and optical morphologies from HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 deep imaging reveal that these [O III] ELGs are mostly multiple-component systems (likely mergers) or compact. And 20% of them are nearly invisible in the rest-frame UV owing to heavy dust attenuation. Interestingly, we find that our samples reside in an overdensity consisting of two components: one southeast (SE) with an overdensity factor of $δ_{gal}$ ~ 41 over a volume of 13$^{3}$ cMpc$^{3}$ and the other northwest (NW) with $δ_{gal}$ ~ 38 over a volume of 10$^{3}$ cMpc$^{3}$. The two overdense substructures are expected to be virialized at z=0 with a total mass of ~ 1.1 x 10$^{15}$ M$_\odot$ and ~ 4.8 x 10$^{14}$ M$_\odot$, and probably merge into a Coma-like galaxy cluster.

VLT MUSE observations of the bubble nebula around NGC 1313 X-2 and evidence for additional photoionization

The bubble nebula surrounding NGC 1313 X-2 is believed to be powered by high velocity winds from the central ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) as a result of supercritical accretion. With the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observation of the nebula, we find enhanced OIII emission at locations spatially coincident with clusters of stars and the central X-ray source, suggesting that photoionization in addition to shock-ionization plays an important role in powering the nebula. The X-ray luminosity of the ULX and the number of massive stars in the nebula region can account for the required ionizing luminosity derived with MAPPINGS V, which also confirms that pure shocks cannot explain the observed emission line ratios.

Ionized Outflows in Nearby Quasars are Poorly Coupled to their Host Galaxies

We analyze Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations of nine low-redshift (z < 0.1) Palomar-Green quasar host galaxies to investigate the spatial distribution and kinematics of the warm, ionized interstellar medium, with the goal of searching for and constraining the efficiency of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. After separating the bright AGN from the starlight and nebular emission, we use pixel-wise, kpc-scale diagnostics to determine the underlying excitation mechanism of the line emission, and we measure the kinematics of the narrow-line region (NLR) to estimate the physical properties of the ionized outflows. The radial size of the NLR correlates with the AGN luminosity, reaching scales of $\sim 5\,$kpc and beyond. The geometry of the NLR is well-represented by a projected biconical structure, suggesting that the AGN radiation preferably escapes through the ionization cone. We find enhanced velocity dispersions ($\sim 100\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) traced by the H$α$ emission line in localized zones within the ionization cones. Interpreting these kinematic features as signatures of interaction between an AGN-driven ionized gas outflow and the host galaxy interstellar medium, we derive mass outflow rates of $\sim 0.008-1.6\, M_\odot \,$yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic injection rates of $\sim 10^{39}-10^{42} \,$erg$\,$s$^{-1}$, which yield extremely low coupling efficiencies of $\lesssim 10^{-3}$. These findings add to the growing body of recent observational evidence that AGN feedback is highly ineffective in the host galaxies of nearby AGNs.

Long Dark Gaps in the Ly$β$ Forest at $z<6$: Evidence of Ultra Late Reionization from XQR-30 Spectra

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near reionization using dark gaps in the Lyman-$β$ (Ly$β$) forest. With its lower optical depth, Ly$β$ offers a potentially more sensitive probe to any remaining neutral gas compared to commonly used Ly$α$ line. We identify dark gaps in the Ly$β$ forest using spectra of 42 QSOs at $z_{\rm em}>5.5$, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme. Approximately $40\%$ of these QSO spectra exhibit dark gaps longer than $10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ at $z\simeq5.8$. By comparing the results to predictions from simulations, we find that the data are broadly consistent both with models where fluctuations in the Ly$α$ forest are caused solely by ionizing ultraviolet background (UVB) fluctuations and with models that include large neutral hydrogen patches at $z<6$ due to a late end to reionization. Of particular interest is a very long ($L=28h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$) and dark ($τ_{\rm eff} \gtrsim 6$) gap persisting down to $z\simeq 5.5$ in the Ly$β$ forest of the $z_{\rm}=5.85$ QSO PSO J025$-$11. This gap may support late reionization models with a volume-weighted average neutral hydrogen fraction of $ \langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle \gtrsim 5\%$ by $z=5.6$. Finally, we infer constraints on $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle$ over $5.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 6.0$ based on the observed Ly$β$ dark gap length distribution and a conservative relationship between gap length and neutral fraction derived from simulations. We find $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle \leq 0.05$, 0.17, and 0.29 at $z\simeq 5.55$, 5.75, and 5.95, respectively. These constraints are consistent with models where reionization ends significantly later than $z = 6$.

Hydrogen reionisation ends by $z=5.3$: Lyman-$α$ optical depth measured by the XQR-30 sample

The presence of excess scatter in the Ly-$α$ forest at $z\sim 5.5$, together with the existence of sporadic extended opaque Gunn-Peterson troughs, has started to provide robust evidence for a late end of hydrogen reionisation. However, low data quality and systematic uncertainties complicate the use of Ly-$α$ transmission as a precision probe of reionisation's end stages. In this paper, we assemble a sample of 67 quasar sightlines at $z>5.5$ with high signal-to-noise ratios of $>10$ per $\leq 15$ km s$^{-1}$ spectral pixel, relying largely on the new XQR-30 quasar sample. XQR-30 is a large program on VLT/X-Shooter which obtained deep (SNR $>20$ per pixel) spectra of 30 quasars at $z>5.7$. We carefully account for systematics in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly-$α$ systems. We present improved measurements of the mean Ly-$α$ transmission over $4.9 3.5 σ$). Our results indicate that reionisation-related fluctuations, whether in the UVB, residual neutral hydrogen fraction, and/or IGM temperature, persist in the intergalactic medium until at least $z=5.3$ ($t=1.1$ Gyr after the Big Bang). This is further evidence for a late end to reionisation.

Chemical Abundance of z~6 Quasar Broad-Line Regions in the XQR-30 Sample

The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across quasar properties: bolometric luminosity, black hole mass, and blueshift of the \civ\, line, finding no redshift evolution in the emission-line ratios by comparing our high-redshift quasars to lower-redshift (2.0 < z < 5.0) results presented in the literature. Using Cloudy-based locally optimally-emitting cloud photoionisation model relations between metallicity and emission-line flux ratios, we find the observable properties of the broad emission lines to be consistent with emission from gas clouds with metallicity that are at least 2-4 times solar. Our high-redshift measurements also confirm that the blueshift of the CIV emission line is correlated with its equivalent width, which influences line ratios normalised against CIV. When accounting for the CIV blueshift, we find that the rest-frame UV emission-line flux ratios do not correlate appreciably with the black hole mass or bolometric luminosity.

First Census of Gas-phase Metallicity Gradients of Star-forming Galaxies in Overdense Environments at Cosmic Noon

We report the first spatially resolved measurements of gas-phase metallicity radial gradients in star-forming galaxies in overdense environments at $z\gtrsim2$. The spectroscopic data are acquired by the \mg\ survey, a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) cycle-28 medium program. This program is obtaining 45 orbits of WFC3/IR grism spectroscopy in the density peak regions of three massive galaxy protoclusters (BOSS 1244, BOSS 1542 and BOSS 1441) at $z=2-3$. Our sample in the BOSS 1244 field consists of 20 galaxies with stellar-mass ranging from $10^{9.0}$ to $10^{10.3}$ \Msun\ , star formation rate (SFR) from 10 to 240 \Msun\,yr$^{-1}$, and global gas-phase metallicity (\oh) from 8.2 to 8.6. At $1σ$ confidence level, 2/20 galaxies in our sample show positive (inverted) gradients -- the relative abundance of oxygen increasing with galactocentric radius, opposite the usual trend. Furthermore, 1/20 shows negative gradients and 17/20 are consistent with flat gradients. This high fraction of flat/inverted gradients is uncommon in simulations and previous observations conducted in blank fields at similar redshifts. To understand this, we investigate the correlations among various observed properties of our sample galaxies. We find an anticorrelation between metallicity gradient and global metallicity of our galaxies residing in extreme overdensities, and a marked deficiency of metallicity in our massive galaxies as compared to their coeval field counterparts. We conclude that the cold-mode gas accretion plays an active role in shaping the chemical evolution of galaxies in the protocluster environments, diluting their central chemical abundance, and flattening/inverting their metallicity gradients.

Systematic biases in determining dust attenuation curves through galaxy SED fitting

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve ($δ$) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation ($A_V$) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope ($β_0$) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting $β_0$ for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of $β_0<-2.2$ for a starburst of constant star formation. Our results show that strong degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$ in the SED fitting induce systematic biases leading to a false $A_V$--$δ$ correlation. Our simulation tests reveal that this relationship can be well reproduced even when a flat $A_V$--$δ$ relation is taken to build the input model galaxy SEDs. The variations in best-fitting $δ$ are dominated by the fitting errors. We show that assuming a starburst with constant star formation in SED fitting will result in a steeper attenuation curve, smaller degeneracy errors, and a stronger $A_V$--$δ$ relation. Our findings confirm that the $A_V$--$δ$ relation obtained through SED fitting is likely driven by the systematic biases induced by the fitting degeneracies between $β_0$, $δ$, and $A_V$.

The cosmic environment overtakes the local density in shaping galaxy star formation

The gas supply from the cosmic web is the key to sustain star formation in galaxies. It remains to be explored how the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS) effects on galaxy evolution at given local environments. We examine galaxy specific star formation rate as a function of local density in a LSS at $z=0.735$ in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. The LSS is mapped by 732 galaxies with $R<24$\,mag and redshift at $0.72\le z \le 0.75$ collected from the literature and our spectroscopic observations with Magellan/IMACS, consisting of five galaxy clusters/groups and surrounding filaments over an area of $23.9 \times22.7$\,co-moving\,Mpc$^2$. The spread of spectroscopic redshifts corresponds a velocity dispersion of 494\,km\,s$^{-1}$, indicating the LSS likely to be a thin sheet with a galaxy density $\gtrsim 3.9$ times that of the general field. These clusters/groups in this LSS mostly exhibit elongated morphologies and multiple components connected with surrounding filaments. Strikingly, we find that star-forming galaxies in the LSS keep star formation at the same level as field, and show no dependence on local density but stellar mass. Meanwhile, an increasing fraction of quiescent galaxies is detected at increasing local density in both the LSS and the field, consistent with the expectation that galaxy mass and local dense environment hold the key to quench star formation. Combined together, we conclude that the cosmic environment of the LSS overtakes the local environment in remaining galaxy star formation to the level of the field.

Ultra-luminous high-redshift quasars from SkyMapper -- II. New quasars and the bright end of the luminosity function

We search for ultra-luminous Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) at high redshift using photometry from the SkyMapper Southern Survey Data Release 3 (DR3), in combination with 2MASS, VHS DR6, VIKING DR5, AllWISE, and CatWISE2020, as well as parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia DR2 and eDR3. We report 142 newly discovered Southern QSOs at $3.8 80$ per cent complete for $M_{145}<-27.33$ ABmag at $z=4.7$ and for $M_{145}<-27.73$ ABmag at $z=5.4$. We derive the bright end of the QSO luminosity function at restframe 145 nm for $z=4.7-5.4$ and measure its slope to be $β= -3.60\pm0.37$ and $β= -3.38\pm0.32$ for two different estimates of the faint-end QSO density adopted from the literature. We also present the first $z\sim 5$ QSO luminosity function at restframe 300 nm.

The mass-metallicity relation at cosmic noon in overdense environments: first results from the MAMMOTH-Grism HST slitless spectroscopic survey

The MAMMOTH-Grism slitless spectroscopic survey is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) cycle-28 medium program, which is obtaining 45 orbits of WFC3/IR grism spectroscopy in the density peak regions of three massive galaxy protoclusters at $z=2-3$ discovered using the MAMMOTH technique. We introduce this survey by presenting the first measurement of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) at high redshift in overdense environments via grism spectroscopy. From the completed MAMMOTH-Grism observations in the field of the BOSS1244 protocluster at $z=2.24\pm0.02$, We secure a sample of 36 protocluster member galaxies at $z\sim2.24$, showing strong nebular emission lines ([O III], H$β$ and [O II]) in their G141 spectra. Using the multi-wavelength broad-band deep imaging from HST and ground-based telescopes, we measure their stellar masses in the range of $[10^{9},10^{10.4}]M_\odot$, instantaneous star formation rates (SFR) from 10 to 240$M_\odot yr^{-1}$, and global gas-phase metallicities [$\frac{1}{3}$,1] of solar. Compared with similarly selected field galaxy sample at the same redshift, our galaxies show on average increased SFRs by $\sim$0.06dex and $\sim$0.18dex at $\sim$10$^{10.1}M_\odot$ and $\sim$10$^{9.8}M_\odot$, respectively. Using the stacked spectra of our sample galaxies, we derive the MZR in the BOSS1244 protocluster core as $12+\log({\rm O/H})=(0.136\pm0.018)\times\log(M_\ast/M_\odot)+(7.082\pm0.175)$, showing significantly shallower slope than that in the field. This shallow MZR slope is likely caused by the combined effects of efficient recycling of feedback-driven winds and cold-mode gas accretion in protocluster environments. The former effect helps low-mass galaxies residing in overdensities retain their metal production, whereas the latter effect dilutes the metal content of high-mass galaxies, making them more metal poor than their coeval field counterparts.

"Direct" Gas-Phase Metallicity in Local Analogs of High-Redshift Galaxies: Empirical Metallicity Calibrations for High-Redshift Star-Forming Galaxies

We study the direct gas-phase oxygen abundance using the well-detected auroral [OIII]4363 line in the stacked spectra of a sample of local analogs of high-redshift galaxies. These local analogs share the same location as $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies on the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram. This type of analog has the same ionized interstellar medium (ISM) properties as high-redshift galaxies. We establish empirical metallicity calibrations between the direct gas-phase oxygen abundances ($7.8<12+\log(\rm{O/H})<8.4$) and the N2/O3N2 indices in our local analogs. We find significant systematic offsets between the metallicity calibrations for our local analogs of high-redshift galaxies and those derived from the local HII regions and a sample of local reference galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The N2 and O3N2 metallicities will be underestimated by 0.05-0.1~dex relative to our calibration if one simply applies the local metallicity calibration in previous studies to high-redshift galaxies. Local metallicity calibrations also cause discrepancies of metallicity measurements in high-redshift galaxies using the N2 and O3N2 indicators. In contrast, our new calibrations produce consistent metallicities between these two indicators. We also derive metallicity calibrations for R23, O32, log([OIII]/Hβ), and log([NeIII]/[OII]) indices in our local analogs, which show significant offset compared to those in the SDSS reference galaxies. By comparing with MAPPINGS photoionization models, the different empirical metallicity calibration relations in the local analogs and the SDSS reference galaxies can be shown to be primarily due to the change of ionized ISM conditions.
