Gate-controlled anyon generation and detection in Kitaev spin liquids

Reliable manipulation of non-Abelian Ising anyons supported by Kitaev spin liquids may enable intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we introduce a standalone scheme for both generating and detecting individual Ising anyons using tunable gate voltages in a heterostructure containing a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid and a monolayer semiconductor. The key ingredients of our setup are a Kondo coupling to stabilize an Ising anyon in the spin liquid around each electron in the semiconductor, and a large charging energy to allow control over the electron numbers in distinct gate-defined regions of the semiconductor. In particular, a single Ising anyon can be generated at a disk-shaped region by gate tuning its electron number to one, while it can be interferometrically detected by measuring the electrical conductance of a ring-shaped region around it whose electron number is allowed to fluctuate between zero and one. We provide concrete experimental guidelines for implementing our proposal in promising candidate materials like $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Vacancy spectroscopy of non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquids

Spin vacancies in the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are known to harbor Majorana zero modes, potentially enabling topological quantum computing at elevated temperatures. Here, we study the spectroscopic signatures of such Majorana zero modes in a scanning tunneling setup where a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid with a finite density of spin vacancies forms a tunneling barrier between a tip and a substrate. Our key result is a well-defined peak close to zero bias voltage in the derivative of the tunneling conductance whose voltage and intensity both increase with the density of vacancies. This ''quasi-zero-voltage peak'' is identified as the closest analog of the zero-voltage peak observed in topological superconductors that additionally reflects the fractionalized nature of spin-liquid-based Majorana zero modes. We further highlight a single-fermion Van Hove singularity at a higher voltage that reveals the energy scale of the emergent Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid. Our proposed signatures are within reach of current experiments on the candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Theory of the Little-Parks effect in spin-triplet superconductors

The celebrated Little-Parks effect in mesoscopic superconducting rings has recently gained great attention due to its potential to probe half-quantum vortices in spin-triplet superconductors. However, despite the large number of works reporting anomalous Little-Parks measurements attributed to unconventional superconductivity, the general signatures of spin-triplet pairing in the Little-Parks effect have not yet been systematically investigated. Here we use Ginzburg-Landau theory to study the Little-Parks effect in a spin-triplet superconducting ring that supports half-quantum vortices; we calculate the field-induced Little-Parks oscillations of both the critical temperature itself and the residual resistance resulting from thermal vortex tunneling below the critical temperature. We observe two separate critical temperatures with a single-spin superconducting state in between and find that, due to the existence of half-quantum vortices, each minimum in the upper critical temperature splits into two minima for the lower critical temperature. From a rigorous calculation of the residual resistance, we confirm that these two minima in the lower critical temperature translate into two maxima in the residual resistance below and establish the general conditions under which the two maxima can be practically resolved. In particular, we identify a fundamental trade-off between sharpening each maximum and keeping the overall magnitude of the resistance large. Our results will guide experimental efforts in designing mesoscopic ring geometries for probing half-quantum vortices in spin-triplet candidate materials on the device scale.

Fractional magnetoresistance oscillations in spin-triplet superconducting rings

Half-quantum vortices in spin-triplet superconductors are predicted to host Majorana zero modes and may provide a viable platform for topological quantum computation. Recent works also suggested that, in thin mesoscopic rings, the superconducting pairing symmetry can be probed via Little-Parks-like magnetoresistance oscillations of periodicity $Φ_0 = h / 2e$ that persist below the critical temperature. Here we use the London limit of Ginzburg-Landau theory to study these magnetoresistance oscillations resulting from thermal vortex tunneling in spin-triplet superconducting rings. For a range of temperatures in the presence of disorder, we find novel oscillations with an emergent fractional periodicity $Φ_0 / n$, where the integer $n \geq 3$ is entirely determined by the ratio of the spin and charge superfluid densities. These fractional oscillations can unambiguously confirm the spin-triplet nature of superconductivity and directly reveal the tunneling of half-quantum vortices in candidate materials such as Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and UTe$_2$.

Divergence of Majorana-Phonon Scattering in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquid

Magnetoelastic interaction couples spin and lattice degrees of freedom and plays a key role in thermal transport properties of magnetic insulators. In the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, the low energy excitations are charge neutral Majorana fermions, which transform the magnetoelasctic interaction into Majorana-phonon scattering. Motivated by anomalous thermal properties of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate RuCl$_3$, in this letter, we combine meV resolution inelastic x-ray scattering and theoretical calculation to examine the Majorana-phonon scattering. We analytically derive the velocity-dependent Majorana-phonon scattering and find a divergence when the acoustic phonons and the itinerant Majorana fermions have the same velocity. Based on the experimentally determined acoustic phonon velocity in RuCl$_3$, we estimate the range in the Kitaev interaction for which divergent Majorana-phonon scattering can happen. Our result opens a new avenue to uncover fractionalized quasiparticles in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid and emphasizes the critical role of lattice excitations in RuCl$_3$.

Nearly-Resonant Crystalline-Phononic Coupling in Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate CsYbSe$_2$

CsYbSe$_2$, a recently identified quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate, exhibits strong crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. Here, we identify phonon and CEF modes with Raman spectroscopy and observe strong CEF-phonon mixing resulting in a vibronic bound state. Complex, mesoscale interplay between phonon modes and CEF modes is observed in real space, and an unexpected nearly resonant condition is satisfied, yielding up to fifth-order combination modes, with a total of 17 modes identified in the spectra. This study paves the way to coherent control of possible QSL ground states with optically accessible CEF-phonon manifolds and mesoscale engineering of CEF-phonon interactions.

Variational study of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model

We compute the low-energy excitation spectrum and the dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model through a variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the pure Kitaev honeycomb model. This novel approach reveals the physical reason for the asymmetric stability of the Kitaev spin liquid phases around the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev limits. Moreover, we demonstrate that the fractionalized excitations form bound states in specific regions of each Kitaev spin liquid phase and that certain phase transitions induced by Heisenberg and Gamma interactions are driven by the condensation of such a bound state. Remarkably, this bound state appears as a sharp mode in the dynamical spin structure factor, while its condensation patterns at the appropriate phase transitions provide a simple explanation for the magnetically ordered phases surrounding each Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Optical vortex manipulation for topological quantum computation

Proposed approaches to topological quantum computation based on Majorana bound states may enable new paths to fault-tolerant quantum computing. Several recent experiments have suggested that the vortex cores of topological superconductors, such as iron-based superconductors, may host Majorana bound states at zero energy. To facilitate quantum computation with these zero-energy vortex bound states, a precise and fast manipulation of individual vortices is crucial. However, handling individual vortices remains a challenge, and a theoretical framework for describing individually controlled vortex motion is still critically needed. We propose a scheme for the use of local heating based on scanning optical microscopy to manipulate Majorana bound states emergent in the vortex cores of topological superconductors. Specifically, we derive the conditions required for transporting a single vortex between two stationary defects in the superconducting material by trapping it with a "hot spot" generated by local optical heating. Using these critical conditions for the vortex motion, we then establish the ideal material properties for the implementation of our manipulation scheme, which paves the way toward the controllable handling of zero-energy vortex bound states.

Thermal anyon interferometry in phonon-coupled Kitaev spin liquids

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent mesoscopic region with negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable $(i)$ accurate determination of the quantized thermal Hall conductivity, $(ii)$ identification of non-Abelian Ising anyons via the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, and most interestingly $(iii)$ single-anyon detection through heat-based anyon interferometry. Analogous results apply broadly to phonon-coupled chiral topological orders.

Theory of the Kitaev model in a [111] magnetic field

Recent numerical studies indicate that the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb lattice model undergoes a magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transition into a new spin-liquid phase. This intermediate-field phase has been previously characterized as a gapless spin liquid. By implementing a recently developed variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the zero-field model, we demonstrate that the field-induced spin liquid is gapped and belongs to Kitaev's 16-fold way. Specifically, the low-field non-Abelian liquid with Chern number $C=\pm 1$ transitions into an Abelian liquid with $C=\pm 4$. The critical field and the field-dependent behaviors of key physical quantities are in good quantitative agreement with published numerical results. Furthermore, we derive an effective field theory for the field-induced critical point which readily explains the ostensibly gapless nature of the intermediate-field spin liquid.

Multifunctional Superconducting Nanowire Quantum Sensors

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) offer high-quantum-efficiency and low-dark-count-rate single photon detection. In a growing number of cases, large magnetic fields are being incorporated into quantum microscopes, nanophotonic devices, and sensors for nuclear and high-energy physics that rely on SNSPDs, but superconducting devices generally operate poorly in large magnetic fields. Here, we demonstrate robust performance of amorphous SNSPDs in magnetic fields of up to $\pm 6$ T with a negligible dark count rate and unchanged quantum efficiency at typical bias currents. Critically, we also show that in the electrothermal oscillation regime, the SNSPD can be used as a magnetometer with sensitivity of better than 100 $\mathrm{μT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ and as a thermometer with sensitivity of 20 $\mathrm{μK/\sqrt{Hz}}$ at 1 K. Thus, a single photon detector integrated into a quantum device can be used as a multifunctional quantum sensor capable of describing the temperature and magnetic field on-chip simply by varying the bias current to change the operating modality from single photon detection to thermometry or magnetometry.

Robustness of vortex-bound Majorana zero modes against correlated disorder

We investigate the effect of correlated disorder on Majorana zero modes (MZMs) bound to magnetic vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors. By starting from a lattice model of interacting fermions with a $p_x \pm i p_y$ superconducting ground state in the disorder-free limit, we use perturbation theory to describe the enhancement of the Majorana localization length at weak disorder and a self-consistent numerical solution to understand the breakdown of the MZMs at strong disorder. We find that correlated disorder has a much stronger effect on the MZMs than uncorrelated disorder and that it is most detrimental if the disorder correlation length $\ell$ is on the same order as the superconducting coherence length $ξ$. In contrast, MZMs can survive stronger disorder for $\ell \ll ξ$ as random variations cancel each other within the length scale of $ξ$, while an MZM may survive up to very strong disorder for $\ell \gg ξ$ if it is located in a favorable domain of the given disorder realization.

Vacancy-induced low-energy density of states in the Kitaev spin liquid

The Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention due to its exactly solvable spin-liquid ground state with fractionalized Majorana excitations and its possible materialization in magnetic Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit couplings. Recently, the 5d-electron compound H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ has shown to be a strong candidate for Kitaev physics considering the absence of any signs of a long-range ordered magnetic state. In this work, we demonstrate that a finite density of random vacancies in the Kitaev model gives rise to a striking pileup of low-energy Majorana eigenmodes and reproduces the apparent power-law upturn in the specific heat measurements of H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Physically, the vacancies can originate from various sources such as missing magnetic moments or the presence of non-magnetic impurities (true vacancies), or from local weak couplings of magnetic moments due to strong but rare bond randomness (quasivacancies). We show numerically that the vacancy effect is readily detectable even at low vacancy concentrations and that it is not very sensitive neither to nature of vacancies nor to different flux backgrounds. We also study the response of the site-diluted Kitaev spin liquid to the three-spin interaction term, which breaks time-reversal symmetry and imitates an external magnetic field. We propose a field-induced flux-sector transition where the ground state becomes flux free for larger fields, resulting in a clear suppression of the low temperature specific heat. Finally, we discuss the effect of dangling Majorana fermions in the case of true vacancies and show that their coupling to an applied magnetic field via the Zeeman interaction can also account for the scaling behavior in the high-field limit observed in H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$.

Van Hove singularity in the magnon spectrum of the antiferromagnetic quantum honeycomb lattice

The magnetic excitation spectrum of the quantum magnet YbCl$_3$ is studied with inelastic neutron scattering. The spectrum exhibits an unusually sharp feature within a broad continuum, as well as conventional spin waves. By including both transverse and longitudinal channels of the neutron response, linear spin wave theory with a single Heisenberg interaction on the honeycomb lattice reproduces all of the key features in the spectrum. In particular, the broad continuum corresponds to a two-magnon contribution from the longitudinal channel, while the sharp feature within this continuum is identified as a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of states, which indicates the two-dimensional nature of the two-magnon continuum. We term these singularities magneto-caustic features in analogy with caustic features in ray optics where focused envelopes of light are generated when light passes through or reflects from curved or distorted surfaces. The experimental demonstration of a sharp Van Hove singularity in a two-magnon continuum is important because analogous features in potential two-spinon continua could distinguish quantum spin liquids from merely disordered systems. These results establish YbCl$_3$ as a nearly ideal two-dimensional honeycomb lattice material hosting strong quantum effects in the unfrustrated limit.

Toward Kitaev's sixteenfold way in a honeycomb lattice model

Kitaev's sixteenfold way is a classification of exotic topological orders in which $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory is coupled to Majorana fermions of Chern number $C$. The $16$ distinct topological orders within this class, depending on $C \, \mathrm{mod} \, 16$, possess a rich variety of Abelian and non-Abelian anyons. We realize more than half of Kitaev's sixteenfold way, corresponding to Chern numbers $0$, $\pm 1$, $\pm 2$, $\pm 3$, $\pm 4$, and $\pm 8$, in an exactly solvable generalization of the Kitaev honeycomb model. For each topological order, we explicitly identify the anyonic excitations and confirm their topological properties. In doing so, we observe that the interplay between lattice symmetry and anyon permutation symmetry may lead to a "weak supersymmetry" in the anyon spectrum. The topological orders in our honeycomb lattice model could be directly relevant for honeycomb Kitaev materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$, and would be distinguishable by their specific quantized values of the thermal Hall conductivity.

Real space Berry curvature of itinerant electron systems with spin-orbit interaction

By considering an extended double-exchange model with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we derive a general form of the Berry phase $γ$ that electrons pick up when moving around a closed loop. This form generalizes the well-known result valid for SU(2) invariant systems, $γ=Ω/2$, where $Ω$ is the solid angle subtended by the local magnetic moments enclosed by the loop. The general form of $γ$ demonstrates that collinear and coplanar magnetic textures can also induce a Berry phase different from 0 or $π$, smoothly connecting the result for SU(2) invariant systems with the well-known result of Karplus and Luttinger for collinear ferromagnets with finite SOC. By taking the continuum limit of the theory, we also derive the corresponding generalized form of the real space Berry curvature. The new expression is a generalization of the scalar spin chirality, which is presented in an explicitly covariant form. We finally show how these simple concepts can be used to understand the origin of the spontaneous topological Hall effect that has been recently reported in collinear and coplanar antiferromagnetic phases of correlated materials.

Crystal field splitting, local anisotropy, and low energy excitations in the quantum magnet YbCl$_3$

We study the correlated quantum magnet, YbCl$_3$, with neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinements of the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization data. The ground state doublet is well isolated from the other crystal field levels and results in an effective spin-1/2 system with local easy plane anisotropy at low temperature. Cold neutron spectroscopy shows low energy excitations that are consistent with nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic correlations of reduced dimensionality.

Vison Crystals in an Extended Kitaev Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We introduce an extension of the Kitaev honeycomb model by including four-spin interactions that preserve the local gauge structure and hence the integrability of the original model. The extended model has a rich phase diagram containing five distinct vison crystals, as well as a symmetric $π$-flux spin liquid with a Fermi surface of Majorana fermions and a sequence of Lifshitz transitions. We discuss possible experimental signatures and, in particular, present finite-temperature Monte Carlo calculations of the specific heat and the static vison structure factor. We argue that our extended model emerges naturally from generic perturbations to the Kitaev honeycomb model.
