The robust chromatic number of graphs

A 1-removed subgraph $G_f$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is obtained by $(i)$ selecting at most one edge $f(v)$ for each vertex $v\in V$, such that $v\in f(v)\in E$ (the mapping $f:V\to E \cup \{\varnothing\}$ is allowed to be non-injective), and $(ii)$ deleting all the selected edges $f(v)$ from the edge set $E$ of $G$. Proper vertex colorings of 1-removed subgraphs proved to be a useful tool for earlier research on some Turán-type problems. In this paper, we introduce a systematic investigation of the graph invariant 1-robust chromatic number, denoted as $ω_1(G)$. This invariant is defined as the minimum chromatic number $χ(G_f)$ among all 1-removed subgraphs $G_f$ of $G$. We also examine other standard graph invariants in a similar manner.

The robust chromatic number of certain graph classes

A 1-selection $f$ of a graph $G$ is a function $f: V(G)\rightarrow E(G)$ such that $f(v)$ is incident to $v$ for every vertex $v$. The 1-removed $G_f$ is the graph $(V(G),E(G)\setminus f[V(G)])$. The (1-)robust chromatic number $χ_1(G)$ is the minimum of $χ(G_f)$ over all 1-selections $f$ of $G$. We determine the robust chromatic number of complete multipartite graphs and Kneser graphs and prove tight lower and upper bounds on the robust chromatic number of chordal graphs and some of their extensively studied subclasses, with respect to their ordinary chromatic number.

Graphs with equal Grundy domination and independence number

The Grundy domination number, ${γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the maximum length of a sequence $(v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_k)$ of vertices in $G$ such that for every $i\in \{2,\ldots, k\}$, the closed neighborhood $N[v_i]$ contains a vertex that does not belong to any closed neighborhood $N[v_j]$, where $j<i$. It is well known that the Grundy domination number of any graph $G$ is greater than or equal to the upper domination number $Γ(G)$, which is in turn greater than or equal to the independence number $α(G)$. In this paper, we initiate the study of the class of graphs $G$ with $Γ(G)={γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$ and its subclass consisting of graphs $G$ with $α(G)={γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$. We characterize the latter class of graphs among all twin-free connected graphs, provide a number of properties of these graphs, and prove that the hypercubes are members of this class. In addition, we give several necessary conditions for graphs $G$ with $Γ(G)={γ_{\rm gr}}(G)$ and present large families of such graphs.

Subexponential-time Algorithms for Maximum Independent Set in $P_t$-free and Broom-free Graphs

In algorithmic graph theory, a classic open question is to determine the complexity of the Maximum Independent Set problem on $P_t$-free graphs, that is, on graphs not containing any induced path on $t$ vertices. So far, polynomial-time algorithms are known only for $t\le 5$ [Lokshtanov et al., SODA 2014, 570--581, 2014], and an algorithm for $t=6$ announced recently [Grzesik et al. Arxiv 1707.05491, 2017]. Here we study the existence of subexponential-time algorithms for the problem: we show that for any $t\ge 1$, there is an algorithm for Maximum Independent Set on $P_t$-free graphs whose running time is subexponential in the number of vertices. Even for the weighted version MWIS, the problem is solvable in $2^{O(\sqrt {tn \log n})}$ time on $P_t$-free graphs. For approximation of MIS in broom-free graphs, a similar time bound is proved. Scattered Set is the generalization of Maximum Independent Set where the vertices of the solution are required to be at distance at least $d$ from each other. We give a complete characterization of those graphs $H$ for which $d$-Scattered Set on $H$-free graphs can be solved in time subexponential in the size of the input (that is, in the number of vertices plus the number of edges): If every component of $H$ is a path, then $d$-Scattered Set on $H$-free graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges can be solved in time $2^{O(|V(H)|\sqrt{n+m}\log (n+m))}$, even if $d$ is part of the input. Otherwise, assuming the Exponential-Time Hypothesis (ETH), there is no $2^{o(n+m)}$-time algorithm for $d$-Scattered Set for any fixed $d\ge 3$ on $H$-free graphs with $n$-vertices and $m$-edges.
